●  Stop and consider carefully what went wrong. The most common causes of a setback are personal worries, overconfidence, and poor coping skills. Take a look at any factor that may have contributed to the setback: where you were, who you were with, what you were thinking and feeling.

●Learn from it. Learn from your analysis of the setback, and adjust your plan to try to prevent similar things from happening next time. Each time you adapt your plan and put it into action again, you actually improve your chances of eventual success.  .

Remind yourself that your setback is a slip instead of a fall.  After adjusting, you can still make progress toward success again.

Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled authentic-sounding speech synthesis (语音合成) to the point that a person can no longer distinguish whether they are talking to another human or a deepfake (深度伪造). If a person's own voice is "cloned" by a third party without their agreement, bad guys can use it to send any message they want.

Computer scientist and engineer Ning Zhang has developed a new method to prevent unauthorized speech synthesis before it takes place: a tool called AntiFake.

Traditional deepfake detection methods only work after the damage is done. However, AntiFake prevents voice data from being synthesized into an audio deepfake beforehand. This tool turns the tables on cybercriminals (网络罪犯) by using similar voice cloning techniques they employ, but for voice protection. The software complicates voice data extraction and feature identification crucial for voice synthesis. "We're using an opposite AI technique originally used by cybercriminals, but now we're using it against them," Zhang explained. "We slightly change the recorded audio, just enough to make it unusable for voice clone training while still sounding natural to humans."

Ben Zhao, a professor of computer science at University of Chicago, says that the software, like all digital security systems, will never provide complete protection. But, he adds that it can raise the bar and limit the attack to a smaller group of individuals with significant resources.

AntiFake can already protect shorter voice recordings against cloning. The creators of the tool believe that it could be extended to protect larger audio documents or music from misuse. But the methods and tools that are developed must be continuously adapted because cybercriminals will learn and grow with them.

The summer of 2023 was the hottest ever recorded on Earth. Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from burning fossil fuels are the main causes behind climate change, and scientists say they must be controlled. But there's another greenhouse gas to deal with: methane. Tackling it may be the best bet for putting the brakes on rising temperatures in the short term. That's because it's relatively short-lived in the atmosphere—methane lasts about 12 years, while CO₂ can stick around for hundreds of years.

We already have strategies for cutting methane emissions—fixing natural gas leaks (methane is the main component of natural gas), removing coal gradually (mining operations release methane), eating less meat and dairy products (cows burp lots of methane) and electrifying transportation and appliances. Implementing all existing strategies could slow global warming by 30 percent over the next decade, research has shown.

But some climate scientists, including Jackson, say we need to go further. Scientists want to develop ways to remove methane directly from the air. Most ideas are still in early research stages. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is currently studying these potential technologies, their state of readiness and possible risks, and what further research and funding are needed. Some of the approaches include re-engineering bacteria that are already good at eating methane and developing reactors in methane-rich places to chemically transform the gas.

"Methane is a sprint (短跑) and CO₂ is a marathon," says Desirée Plata, a civil and environmental engineer at MIT. "While methane emissions are a significant contributor to climate change, carbon dioxide emissions remain the primary driver. Therefore, we must continue to pursue strategies to reduce CO₂ emissions while also targeting methane reduction." For scientists focused on removing greenhouse gases, it's off to the races.

Candace Leslie Cima is a 75-year-old fashion and lifestyle influencer working to change the attitudes regarding aging for both her generation and the ones following hers.

Candace's video, sharing a comment on her style that says "You're 60. You shouldn't wear that", got 7.4 million views on social media. She is answering comments about her sleeveless shirt style choices with "I am 75, actually." In her mind, there is no stigma attached to being aging.

After all, everyone ages, so we all as a society should normalize these changes and learn to see them positively.

For her, age is not just a number. It's a badge of honor to wear proudly. "The only way to change that view is that we, as older women, show them that aging is a gift, something to be embraced, valued and shared," she writes.

Emerging evidence in humans suggests a  (typical) Western high-fat, high-sugar junk food diet can quickly weaken your brain's appetite control.

After offering volunteers a week-long binge (大吃大喝) of waffles, milkshakes and similarly rich foods, researchers in Australia found young and health y ones scored worse on memory tests and experienced a  (great) desire to eat junk food, even when they were already full.

The findings suggest something is special in the hippocampus(海马体)-a region of the brain  supports memory and helps to regulate appetite. When we are full, the hippocampus is thought to quieten down our memories of delicious food, thereby  (reduce) our appetite. When it's interrupted,  control can be seriously damaged. Over the years, extensive research on  (mouse) has found the function of the hippocampus is very sensitive to junk food, but recently this has been observed only in young and healthy humans.

It is clear that this team developed to compete for the goal instead of against each other. This team has stayed 15 and self-directed because of being allowed to become more than their "individual selves".

We've all been there—you've sent a message and it's marked "read", but you haven't heard anything back. What's the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it's also pretty common.  Here are a few tips.

Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren't aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response.  They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn't actually text it.

Resist the temptation (诱惑) to double-text.  If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it'll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.

A humanoid robot can relay video and touch sensations to a person wearing a haptic (触觉内) feedback suit and a virtual reality (VR) headset hundreds of kilometres away, offering away for people to attend events without travelling.

The iCub 3 robot is a 52-kilogram, 125-centimetre-tall robot with 54 joints across its body. Its head contains two cameras where a human's eyes would be, and an Internet-connected computer where the brain would go. Along with the cameras, sensors covering its body send data to the robot's "brain". These sensations are then reproduced on a suit and VR headset worn by a remote human operator.

When the operators react to what they see and feel, the suit's sensors pick up the movements and the robot matches them. "The key is to translate every signal and bit of digital data that can be sent through the network." says Stefano Dafarra, who was part of the iCub3 team. There can be a small delay of up to 100 milliseconds to capture and transmit the visual shots, but the operator can case this by moving slightly slower than normal.

The team demonstrated the robot at the Venice Biennale, where it wandered through an exhibition while its operator stood 290 kilometres away in Genoa. Dafarra hopes people will use the iCub3 to attend events remotely, reducing the need to travel. "But at present, a fall could be hugely damaging to the robot, and it's uncertain whether it could stand up again on its own," he says.

"iCub3 is an interesting robot and offers clear advantages from the previous versions." says Jonathan Aitken, whose laboratory owns a prior version of the robot. However, he is disappointed that the team wasn't clear in its research about the data transmission requirements of the new version of the robot. "It would be good to know just how much data was required, and what the upper and lower bounds were." he says.

Though it isn't a conventional medical addiction, for many people, success has addictive properties. To a certain extent, praise stimulates the neurotransmitter dopamine (神经递质多巴胺), which is shown in all addictive behaviors. Therefore, success is also similar to alcohol addiction in its effects on human.

There is plenty you can do to retrain yourself to pursue happiness instead of success. The first step is an admission that successful as you are, were, or hope to be in your life and work, you are not going to find true happiness in your professional life. You'll find it in things that are deeply ordinary: enjoying a walk or a conversation with a loved one. The second step is to make up for any relationships you've compromised (妥协) in the name of success. The last step is to find the right measurement of success. If you measure yourself only by the rewards of money and power, you'll spend your life running on these and comparing yourself to others. I suggest the better measurements be faith, family, and friendship.

Success in and of itself is not a bad thing. It can bring fun and sweetness to life. But it becomes tyrannical (专横的) when it is a replacement for the relationships and love that should be at the center of our lives.

Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcome. You're comfortable and feel like you belong. As in most cities, it's a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business. After taking a few sips of that Caramel Macchiato, you immediately get that feeling of energy and optimism. Perhaps it's partly due to the caffeine and sugar rush, or maybe it's that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.

In December of 2017, Trenton's first Starbuck's café was opened to the public at 102 Warren Street. Walking in, people living in Trenton scream at everything about this café, from the diverse but local stuff to the Trenton themed décor (室内装饰) and art. To make things better, this Starbucks also serves as an "opportunity café" which essentially means the young people in our communities are recruited and offered job training and employment. This program not only uplifts our youth, but also increases the amount of minority business in the city.
