How Star Wars Changed Movie-making Forever

"May the force be with you!" If you are a Star Wars fan, then you have probably heard this phrase many times. So many characters, devices, and phrases from the movie have become well-known. But you might be surprised to find out how much this movie has changed how movies are made.

"A long time ago in a galaxy (银河系) far, far away. . . "is how Star Wars begins. Its plot was not creative.

The story was typical science fiction with lots of drama, traditional characters and good battling evil, in space and in hand-to-hand fight.

It was the special effects that made Star Wars much better than other movies. People still talk about the light swords (剑) that could cut, burn and melt through most substances. Spaceships sped through space and landed on huge, realistic-looking space stations. When Star Wars first came out in 1977, most movie theaters were stand-alone (单独的) buildings, with just one movie screen. Using the money Star Wars had made for them, movie-theater owners built more theaters, leading to the multiplexes (多影厅影院) that are common today.

Theaters needed more movies to show on all the additional movie screens and in all the new multiplexes. So new movie companies sprang up, including small ones creating experimental movies. Some of the methods became popular and others failed. But, thanks to Star Wars, people got to see new types of movies.

There had been movie continuations(续篇) before, but they were often just poor imitations of the first movie. The Star Wars movies were all popular. There have been two trilogies (三部曲)so far, with more planned.

    A. They tried out new techniques.

     B. In fact, it was quite old-fashioned.

     C. Audience had never seen anything like these.

     D. Thus, audience began to enjoy science fiction movies there.

     E. Star Wars was the first really successful movie trilogy in history.

     F. If you are not a fan, you are still likely familiar with these words.

     G. If you are a movie maker, you may be inspired by this classic film.

Face-book has developed a kind of AI (人工智能) translating between any pair of 100 languages without depending on first translating to English.

Face-book's system was trained on a data set of 7. 5 billion sentence pairs collected from the web across 100 languages, though not all the languages had an equal number of sentence pairs. "What I was really interested in was cutting out English as a middle man. Globally there are plenty of countries where they speak two languages that aren't English," says Angela Fan of Face-book AI, who led the work.

For some language pairs, the new system shows significant improvements in translation quality. For example, translating from Spanish to Portuguese is extremely strong because Spanish is the second-most spoken first language worldwide, meaning the researchers can get a lot of data. Translation between English and Belarusian (白俄罗斯语) also is improved because the AI can translate Russian into English, which shares similarities with Belarusian.

While the system isn't in use on the social network site, Face-book plans to put it to work soon to manage the 20 billion translations made every day when people click "Translate" on posts (帖子) written in more than 160 languages. "Future work will be done on other languages," says Fan, "especially for languages where we don't have a lot of data, like South-East Asian and African languages. "

The work "breaks away from the English-centric models and tries to build more different models," says Shelia Castilho of the ADAPT Centre at Dublin City University, Ireland, "That's pretty new and different. But it's hard to know if the AI does a right translation work," says Castilho. "The users may not know the other language, so they cannot judge the correctness of the translation. "

(1)、What's Angela Fan's purpose of doing the research?
A、To collect data of all kinds of people. B、To make learning different languages easier. C、To achieve her dream of becoming a translator. D、To avoid using English as a middle man in translation.
(2)、Why is it easy to translate from Spanish to Portuguese by AI?
A、There is much data on Spanish. B、Portuguese is similar to Spanish. C、Researchers have a good knowledge of the two languages. D、Spanish is spoken by the largest number of people.
    (3)、What is Castilho worried about?
A、The safety of AI translation. B、The correctness of AI translation. C、The way of using Face-book. D、The number of posts on the website.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、Face-book AI Can Talk with the Users B、Face-book Wants to Buy a New System C、Face-book AI Can Translate Any Pair of 100 Languages D、Face-book Has Lost Many Users

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.

My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.

As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source of entertainment (娱乐). It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.

I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it! It was a special time to bond (联系) with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.

Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.

As a novelist, I've found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can't afford to buy a book. I see libraries as a safe haven (避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

(1)、Which word best describes the author's relationship with books as a child?
    A、Cooperative. B、Uneasy. C、Casual. D、Close.
(2)、What does the underlined phrase "an added meaning" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A、Pleasure from working in the library. B、Joy of reading passed on in the family. C、Wonderment from acting out the stories. D、A closer bond developed with the readers.
(3)、What does the author call on other writers to do?
A、Support libraries. B、Buy her novels. C、Sponsor book fairs. D、Write for social media.
(4)、Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A、My Idea about Writing B、My Love of the Library C、Library: A Haven for the Young D、Reading: A Source of Knowledge

Jacky is documenting her progress online and has also gained a large social media following. As she nears the end of her goal,Jacky is hoping to inspire a single thought in others. She tells people, "You're stronger than you think and you're able to do so much more. "

    Money Well Spent

It was late spring, and we were living in a house in a rural part of Tennessee. I have always loved to garden, and this morning seemed like the perfect time to be working on the broad flowerbeds surrounding the old house we were remodeling (改建).

I jumped when I heard a soft voice. "Hello? Could I have a glass of water, please?" a seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl asked hesitantly, looking at the ground.

"Of course," I said, taking off my gloves. I went into the house and came back out with a cold bottle of water. She drank most of the bottle with the first swig (大喝) and then turned as if to walk back down the road.

"Did your car break down and do you need some help?" I asked.

She shook her head and took a deep breath that ended somewhere between a sigh and a sob.

There was a flash of anger. "My dad threw me out, so I'm going to live with my grandma in Memphis. But she can't come to get me, so she has a ticket for me at the bus station," said the girl.

"It is thirty miles from our house to the bus station in Clarksville. How about my driving you there?" I suggested. Tears welled up in her eyes, and she nodded. "Well, let's give your grandma a call," I said. "She's probably worried. "

Within a few minutes, the girl was dialing her grandma on my phone. As soon as I talked to her, she confirmed the whole story. The girl's mother had died suddenly in an accident. Her dad had been coping with a lot of anger, and the two of them were not getting along.

At a second thought, I took out some extra cash from our emergency stash (储藏) in my top dresser drawer. About thirty minutes later, we pulled up to the bus station. But the bus wasn't scheduled to arrive for another two hours.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

"Hungry for a hamburger?" I asked.

The end of a semester(学期) can be a challenging time for students. Kids from elementary school through high school are already stressed after more than a year of COVID-19 disrupted learning. Pressing through the last few weeks of a semester can be discouraging, especially for older students with demanding final projects and exams.

"Parents' fears about their kids are so often not about the present but the future — a fear that kids who are struggling will get stuck there. But kids rarely stay stuck, in part because they too want their lives to work out," says Ned Johnson, a test preparation expert. When children show signs of stress, parents should respond by focusing on mental health, not achievement or grades.

Families can create a sense of safety for children by establishing routines for the day and week, especially those that emphasize connection, such as family dinnertime and a bedtime chat. Parents should meet kids with empathy(共鸣) and listening, instead of trying to solve their problems. For example, we can normalize family conversation about the ups and downs of the day. As Madeline Levine, a psychologist, put it: let your children "borrow your calm".

In addition, peer support programs can also play an important role in teaching skills for stress management and wellness. "Teens will talk to other teens, especially when they feel they are in a brave space built on trust," Katie Hurley, a psychotherapist says.

Some children may arrive at the finish line exhausted and needing sleep. Or perhaps they are eager to celebrate the holidays with all the usual fanfare. Respect your child's wishes and plan to create the break that fits your family's needs. McKenna Reitz, a mom from Toledo, Ohio, plans for her daughters Karsen, 9, and Maddox, 6, to enjoy time off with family and friends. Her holiday plan apparently reflects that. "It is the most important thing they need right now," she says. "Our children need to know that they are not alone. "

When talking about colds, maybe some people say it is very common. During the cold winter days, many people will complain the cold winter makes them catch a cold, and what they feel upset about are not only the headache, cough but also the runny nose. It is so embarrassing when they forget to take tissue along with them.

Want to stay away from colds? Put on a happy face.

Compared to unhappy people, those who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds, according to a new study. It's possible that being happy helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from New York University. "It seems that positive feelings may reduce the danger of illness," said the study's chief researcher Sheldon Cohen. In an earlier study, Cohen found that people who were cheerful and lively caught coughs and colds less often. People who

showed feelings were also less likely to tell their doctors that they felt ill. In this study, Cohen has interviewed 193 adults every day for two weeks. During the interviews, the people told researchers that they were given colds by doctors and had to stay alone in a room for six days. The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get ill. But for people who said they felt happy during the research period, their illnesses were less serious and lasted for a shorter time.

Cohen believes that when people experience positive feelings, their body may produce a chemical that helps fight illness and disease. So if you are worried about your health, look on the brighter side more often.

A、People who felt happy never got ill.  B、People's feelings had no effect on their health. C、People with good feelings became ill more easily.  D、People with positive feelings recovered more quickly.
(3)、According to Cohen, which of the following may help fight illness?
    A、Laughing. B、Eating. C、Crying. D、Sleeping.
(4)、What is the best title for this text?
