I'm not sure is more frightened, me or the female gorilla(大猩猩)that suddenly appears out of nowhere. I'm walking on a path in the forest in the Central African Republic. Unexpectedly, I'm face-to-face with the gorilla, who begins screaming at top of her lungs. That makes her baby scream, and then a 400-pound male appears. He screams the
(loud)of all. The noise shakes the trees as the male beats his chest and charges toward me. I quickly lower myself, ducking my head to avoid(look) directly into his eyes so he doesn't feel(challenge).
My name is Mireya Mayor. I'm a(science)who studies animals such as apes and monkeys. I was searching these three western lowland gorillas I'd been observing. No one had seen them for hours, and my colleagues and I were worried.
When the gorillas and I frightened each other, I was just glad to find(they) alive. True to a gorilla's unaggressive nature, the huge animal(mean)me no real harm. He was just saying: "I'm king of this forest, and here is your reminder!" Once his message was delivered, he allowed me (stay)and watch.

3、We've all been there—you've sent a message and it's marked "read", but you haven't heard anything back. What's the deal? While being left on read (已读不回) can be confusing, it's also pretty common. Here are a few tips.
Expect the best. Remind yourself that the person is probably just busy. Ask yourself if you actually know their schedule. There could be some time commitments you aren't aware of. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response. They put their phone away to focus on work or school. They accidentally forgot to reply. Maybe they thought about what they wanted to say but didn't actually text it.
Resist the temptation (诱惑) to double-text. If you send a lot of follow-up texts, it'll be hard for them to keep up and they might get stressed. Leave them with just one text to catch up on—the other person will probably appreciate your patience.
Read over your previous messages. See if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It's okay if you review your message again and notice that it might have been a little unclear—it happens!
Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don't let it upset or confuse you. If you get your mind off any notifications, you'll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A. Put your phone away.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. Give them a little space so they have a chance to reply.
D. They want to give you a longer response but can't right now.
E. Ask yourself why being left on "read" frustrates or confuses you.
F. You can keep the situation from bothering you until you hear back.
G. You might feel relieved when you find something that is easy to misread.

4、Adults understand what it feels like to be flooded with objects. Why do we often assume thatmore is more when it comes to kids and their belongings? The good news is that I can help my own kids learn earlier than I did how to live more with less.
I found the pre-holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less-used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund (基金) (our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor)
For weeks, I've been thinking of bigger, deeper questions:How do we make it a habit for them? And how do we train ourselves to help them live with, need, and use less? Yesterday, I sat with my son, Shepherd, determined to test my own theory on this. I decided to play with him with only one toy for as long as it would keep his interest. I expected that one toy would keep his attention for about five minutes, ten minutes, max. I chose a red rubber ball-simple, universally available. We passed it, he tried to put it in his mouth, he tried bouncing it, rolling it, sitting on it, throwing it. It was totally, completely enough for him. Before I knew it an hour had passed and it was time to move on to lunch.
We both became absorbed in the simplicity of playing together. He had my full attention and I had his. My little experiment to find joy in a single object worked for both of us.
(1)、What do the words "more is more" in paragraph 1 probably mean?A、The more, the better. B、Enough is enough. C、More money, more worries. D、Earn more and spend more.(2)、What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects?A、Saving up for her holiday. B、Raising money for a poor girl. C、Adding the money to her fund. D、Giving the money to a sick mother.(3)、Why did the author play the ball with Shepherd?A、To try out an idea. B、To show a parent's love. C、To train his attention. D、To help him start a hobby. -
5、While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves(曲线) of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang's works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said.
"Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said.
"Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are, " said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said.
(1)、Wang's winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ___________.A、following the latest world trend B、getting international recognition C、working harder than ever before D、relying on foreign architects(2)、What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?A、Its hilly environment. B、Its large size. C、Its unique style. D、Its diverse functions.(3)、What made Wang's architectural design a success?A、The mixture of different shapes. B、The balance of East and West. C、The use of popular techniques. D、The harmony of old and new.(4)、What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?A、Spread them to the world. B、Preserve them at museums. C、Teach them in universities. D、Recreate them in practice. -
6、Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
(1)、What attracted the early settlers to New York City?A、Its business culture. B、Its small population. C、Its geographical position. D、Its favourable climate.(2)、What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?A、Two-thirds of them stayed there. B、One out of five people got rich. C、Almost everyone gave up. D、Half of them died.(3)、What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?A、They found the city too crowded. B、They wanted to try their luck elsewhere. C、They were unable to stand the winter. D、They were short of food.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、The rise and fall of a city. B、The gold rush in Canada. C、Journeys into the wilderness. D、Tourism in Dawson. -

15、For many teenagers, Saturday mornings are a time to sleep in. After a busy week of waking up early, weekends offer a chance to catch up on rest. A new study finds that sleeping in on weekends—as long as it's not for more than two extra hours—may help teenagers feel less anxious.
Sleep is very important for everyone, especially teenagers, because it helps the brain and body work properly. However, 75% of American teenagers do not get the recommended 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. School, homework, and other activities require early wake-ups, and teenagers usually find it difficult to fall asleep before 11 pm.
In the past, research has suggested that sleeping too much on weekends could cause health problems. But no one had looked closely at how weekend sleep affects anxiety.
Sojeong Kim, a researcher from the University of Oregon, decided to study this. She focused on teenagers aged 12 to 15, as this is when sleep problems often start. The study used information from around 1,900 teens who had filled out a survey about their feelings of anxiety.
The results showed that teenagers who slept in on weekends had lower anxiety, but only if they slept for less than two extra hours. teenagers who didn't sleep in or lost sleep on the weekend reported higher anxiety levels. Those who slept in more than two extra hours had the most anxiety of all.
Kim believes that sleeping too much on weekends can cause "social jet lag (时差)", just like the tiredness people feel when they travel across time zones. For now, she wants teenagers to know there can be advantages to sleeping in on the weekend. "Getting a little more sleep on weekends might help you feel less anxious," she says. "But sleeping too much may make things worse."
(1)、What does the author want to point out in paragraph 2?A、It's hard for teenagers to get enough sleep. B、Too much homework is harmful to kids. C、Most teenagers sleep for over eight hours. D、Adults enjoy sleeping late on workdays.(2)、What were the teenagers in the study asked to do?A、Take a written exam. B、Answer some questions. C、Write a diary entry. D、Go to bed early every day.(3)、What did the study show about teenagers sleeping in over two extra hours on weekends?A、They avoided "social jet lag". B、They felt relaxed in the classroom. C、They experienced higher anxiety. D、They reported a look of satisfaction.(4)、What is Sojeong Kim's suggestion for teenagers regarding weekend sleep?A、They should avoid sleeping in at all costs. B、They should get a little more sleep but not too much. C、They should follow the same sleep schedule as on weekdays. D、They should sleep as long as they want to make up for the lost sleep. -
16、People think children should play sports. Sports are fun, and children stay healthy while playing with others. However, playing sports can have negative (负面的) influence on children. It may produce feelings of poor self-pride or aggressive behavior in some children. According to research on kids and sports, 40 million kids play sports in the US. Of these, 18 million say they have been shouted at or called names while playing sports. This leaves many children with a bad impression of sports.
Many researchers believe adults, especially parents and coaches, are the main cause of too much aggression in children's sports. They believe children copy aggressive adult behavior. Parents and coaches are powerful teachers because children usually look up to them. Often these adults behave aggressively themselves, sending children the message that winning is everything. At children's sporting events, parents may shout at other players or cheer when their child behaves aggressively. As well, children may be taught that hurting other players is acceptable, or they may be pushed to continue playing even when they are injured. Children watch adult sports games and see violent behavior replayed over and over on television.
As a society, we really need to face up to this problem and find out the causes behind them. Parents and coaches should act as better examples for children. They also need to teach children better values. They should teach children to enjoy themselves whether they win or not. Winning is not everything. In addition, children should not be allowed to continue to play when they are injured. Sending a child with an injury into a game gives the child the message that health is not as important as winning. If we make some basic changes, children might learn to enjoy sports again.
(1)、How many children said they had some negative experience when playing sports?A、All of the children. B、More than half of the children. C、Less than half of the children. D、About ten percent of the children.(2)、What does the underlined word "aggressive" in Paragraph 1 probably mean?A、Suitable. B、Curious. C、Confident. 17、Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn't a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, "Just be on time tomorrow, or you'll have detention (放学后留校)."
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, "A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person." We just did drawings today, but I know it's going to be great. I like drawing.

The teacher said to just write what you think, and we'll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn't know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club.
