Some songs tend to get stuck in our heads more easily than others. When a song becomes super popular, we say it's "gone viral". Those words might be more accurate than we ever imagined.
David Earn is an applied mathematician. One day, he talked with musician and scientist Matt Woolhouse. Woolhouse found some songs had been downloaded thousands of times over just a few weeks or months. Those patterns looked familiar to Earn, who studies disease epidemics. And those download data resembled the kind of data he saw with disease transmission(传播). They wondered whether that kind of spread from person to person could be how people decide that they like particular songs.
Earn had been working with a mathematical model to predict how diseases spread during an epidemic. His team now used the same model with the song data. They looked at the 1,000 most downloaded songs in the United Kingdom, dividing them by type.
For popular songs, downloads increased rapidly over time, much like a contagious(传染性的) disease infecting a group of susceptible people. Some types were more contagious than others, the team reported in 2023."The group of people who connect and like folk music isn't the same as the group of people who like heavy metal or dance music. They're different social groups," Earn says. "And some of those social groups are much more likely to share things quickly."
Surprisingly, pop music wasn't the most contagious. It spread, but not as quickly as some other types. Electronic music, on the other hand, was super contagious. Earn thinks these listeners are probably super connected on the web and share things more than people who prefer other types of music.
"We think of contagion as a strictly negative thing," Earn says. "But that same process of contagion functions for other things in life," he now concludes, "like sharing favorite songs with your closest friends."
(1)、Why did Earn and his team conduct their research?A、To analyze the pattern of song spread. B、To investigate the ways songs are grouped. C、To count the times that the songs were downloaded. D、To study the characters of the people who downloaded songs.(2)、What does the underlined word "susceptible" in paragraph 4 mean?A、With a strong will. B、Preferring new ideas. C、Sticking to traditions. D、Likely to be influenced.(3)、Why does electronic music spread quicker?A、Electronic music covers all music types. B、Its fans are skillful at surfing the Internet. C、Electronic music can impress people easily. D、Its lovers like sharing things with others better.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Contagion of Music B、Music Spreads Online Wildly C、How a Song Becomes Attractive D、Frequency of Downloading Songs -

Virtual reality is quickly becoming the new technological frontier. Tech companies everywhere seem to be racing to get their foot in the VR door. However, virtual reality has a set of challenges and hurdles that it must overcome in order to work well. It should be noted that VR is heavily dependent on being very fast, very accurate and very good-looking. If it isn't, the viewer will feel motion sick or disconnected from the world that VR is trying to create.
Now that we can actually build VR headsets that begin to meet these requirements, we are seeing a rising interest in VR. As it rises, so does the interest in creating new media to be experienced in using virtual reality. Journalism is a medium built on relevance. Journalists should always be finding new ways to tell stories and deliver content. It is a goldmine for storytelling. What better ways to tell a story to someone than to put them right in the center of it?
Virtual reality is a powerful tool for journalists. The consumer isn't just reading or watching something play out; they're experiencing it. The immersive nature of VR allows for people to connect with the subject matter on a much deeper level than just reading about it. The experience is emotional, speaking more to our instinct than our intellect. The possibilities for storytelling here are legion, and any storyteller wanting to do something more interesting than their peers should surely be considering the sheer power of VR.
The question of virtual reality, though, is not how powerful it is. That is immediately apparent. The question of VR is one of viability and availability. Telling stories must be easy to do, and access to those stories must be readily available. This is the biggest challenge that VR faces. If the tools to tell a story with VR aren't easy to pick up and learn, VR will fail. If VR technology isn't both top-of-the-line and affordable, VR will fail.
Accessibility was one concern for Thomas Hallaq, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications, who said that current VR technology, is pretty exclusive right now. Despite that, he said he doesn't think the exclusivity of this technology will be a problem in the long run.
"I think it's very promising," Hallaq said. "We're seeing more technology become accessible, and more people having access to that technology. Just look at smartphones." Like radio, TV and the Internet before it, virtual reality will change the way we tell stories.
(1)、Why is VR considered a powerful tool for journalism?A、Because it is an exclusively new tool. B、Because it is very powerful and popular. C、Because people can experience the story in person. D、Because it is very fast, accurate and good-looking.(2)、According to the passage, what is the biggest challenge VR is facing?A、How powerful and interesting it can be. B、Whether people will have easy access to it. C、Whether qualified VR headsets can be built. D、What new ways people will find to deliver content.(3)、What's the author's attitude towards the future of VR technology?A、Optimistic. B、Neutral. C、Pessimistic. D、Concerned.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A、The Wide Popularity of Virtual Reality B、The Future Development of Virtual Reality C、Challenges and Hurdles of Virtual Reality D、Virtual Reality is the Future of Storytelling -

Going on vacation every week might sound like the very unattainable dream.. We asked experts to share their favorite tips for adopting a vacation mindset at home.Get creative about making time
. Some people have to bear weekend schedules packed with work. You could still make the best of a Thursday evening, Holmes suggests. Or, spare an hour on Sunday morning for chores, but protect the rest of the weekend as your vacation time.
Decision scientist Nika Kabiri recommends doing something totally new so you can disconnect from the same old routines governing your life. Among her favorite ideas: Drive to a part of town you've never been to before, go for a city walk, and grab lunch at the first cute café you see. Or take a bike or boat tour of your city. Don't put extra pressure on yourself

Confidence is at the heart of every successful person and it holds the key to success. Regardless of how knowledgeable you are in your professional field, your success will be limited if you lack confidence. Actually, confidence isn't what you're born with, but something learned over time.
Know yourself. Take a long look in the mirror and make an honest and accurate judgement of your strengths and weaknesses. Continue to build upon your strengths, as this will increase your confidence. We all have areas in our professional and personal lives that need to be improved. Instead, it only holds back your success and keeps your confidence low.
Whether you like it or not, people make judgments about you based upon how you dress. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. How you dress directly shows how you feel about yourself. Research shows that you will feel differently about yourself if you are wearing a business suit or sweat pants and a T-shirt. Therefore, be highly aware of your appearance. Dress in a manner that reflects who you are.
Go step by step. You can increase your confidence by seeking out one new challenge at a time. Move on to the next one when one challenge is successfully achieved. Success builds upon itself, therefore success brings success—all fueled by increased confidence!
A.Dress for success.
B.Put pressure on yourself.
C.Forgetting them does not make them go away.
D.Research shows confident people always seek out new challenges.
E.Meanwhile, take an effective method toward improving your weaknesses.
F.The following are three key tricks you may learn to increase your confidence.

People have been told to stay separated — at least six feet apart— and to practice what state and local officials call "social distancing". Some have been asked to work at home. But as people try to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, the resulting chaos and fear are bringing both large and small communities closer.
Simple acts of kindness are sprouting up online and in public, as neighbors, students, teachers, and others begin to connect those who can pass this long and isolating time smoothly, and the people who may not have the means to get through.
For Jesse Farren-James, helping out has taken the form of organizing trips to the supermarkets for supplies, and use of her membership card if anyone needs to buy large quantities. She posted the offer in a Facebook group for the community residents(居民), and some people came and turned to her. "I just feel so lucky that I have so many people in my life to rely on and so sad that not everyone has that," she wrote in the group. In another interview, Farren-James said the "community is coming together" and "there are so many good and amazing people" offering to help where they can.
Also, parents in Dorchester have gathered together online. In a Facebook group called DotParents, parents have been raising money to buy food and supplies for students and families in the community. Lisa Graustein has been organizing this activity. On Thursday, she used the more than $2,000 raised by neighbors to purchase food in a restaurant supply company. A group of volunteers packed the food and planned to distribute to schools for those who may need it.
"Food shortage is real in our city and this crisis is going to be severe." Graustein said. "But here's something we can do that deal better with the hard time". This idea is spreading. She said friends in four other states had being running similar campaigns.
Next, she wants to find a way to get landlords(房东)to temporarily abandon rent for residents in financial difficulties because of the outbreak.

When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear "Turn around and head back home", but I was stubborn, so I walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn't want to end up trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner.
I remembered this recently when I saw a sign that said "All roads lead home". It is true. In life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. What is important, though, is how we travel them. Are we going to go forth in fear or are we going to go forth in faith? Are we going to make this life a terrible trip or are we going to make this life a joyful journey? The choice is ours.
(1)、Why did the author hardly feel bored when he was young?A、Because he could have fun in nature. B、Because he could watch TV all day. C、Because he had many friends. D、Because he used to explore the old dirt road.(2)、How did the author feel when he was exploring the dirt road?A、He thought he would be scolded by his parents. B、He felt contradictory in mind. C、He thought he would be trapped in the woods. D、He was unconscious.(3)、What does the underlined word "something"(Para. 3) refer to?A、The dirt road. B、His house. C、The lake. D、A passing car.(4)、What does the author mainly intend to tell us?A、Always make choices on our own. B、All roads lead home. C、It's our attitude that matters in our life. D、Every effort is worthwhile. -

Keeping Hope Alive in the Storm
One day, my parents took my younger brother, Kaleb and me to visit my aunt's family, who lived on a beautiful lake. We planned to have a family dinner together.
While parents made dinner, my cousin Jerel showed us around. Seeing the yellow rubber boat near the bank, I excitedly urged for a boat ride. Jerel agreed. He grew up on this lake. Though he was 16, it didn't seem to bother him that I was 12 and Kaleb was 7.
We couldn't wait to jump into the rubber boat, took up the paddles ( 浆 ) and set out. Our destination was the small rocky island in the middle of the lake. We laughed and chatted as we paddled along. The sky was blue with piles of white clouds. It was a bit cold, but our life jackets kept us warm.
After half an hour, we reached the island. We jumped off and tied the boat to a huge rock. We started to explore the desert island. We were having so much fun that we didn't notice the weather had changed. Dark clouds gathered and the wind picked up. Then thunder rolled across the sky. Jerel looked worried and nudged me, "A storm is on the way. We need to rush back!"
Jerel led us back to the shore. The calm water had turned into a mess. The boat bounced up and down in the waves. Jerel yelled, "Jump into the boat! Hurry!" We held onto the side of the boat and managed to climb into it. Surprisingly, we found our boat stuck firmly in the rocks. What's worse, there was a big hole at the bottom. Maybe it was torn open by the sharp rock.
Suddenly, the rain poured down upon us, beating against our faces and pounding our life jackets. Kaleb was terrified and started crying. We decided to seek shelter from the rain. Before we headed back, Jerel shouted, "Wait! Let's get the boat out onto the shore! It will help us build a shelter."

Sometimes, it's good to be bored
"I am dying of boredom," complains the young wife Yelena in Chekhov's 1897 play UncleVanya. Of course, if Yelena were around today, we know what she would do: pull out her smartphone and find something fun. Today it is easy to get rid of boredom..
That is the finding of two fascinating recent studies. In one, researchers asked subjects to do something boring, like copying out numbers from a phone book, and then take tests of creative thinkings. The result? In the second study, subjects gave more answers to a word test than a non-bored control group after being forced to watch a dull screensaver.
"An restless mind hungers for stimulation, so boredom becomes a seeking state," says Sandi Mann, the psychologist at the University of Central Lancashire. "." Parents will tell you that kids with "nothing to do" will eventually invent some fun games to play ― with a cardboard box, a light switch, whatever.
The problem, the researchers worry, is that these days we don't struggle to overcome these slow moments. "" Mann says. "This might relieve us temporarily, but it shuts down the deeper thinking." So here is an idea: Instead of always avoiding boredom, embrace and face it. Sometimes, anyway. Mann has found she gets some of her best thinking done when she is driving her car and therefore can't be distracted by her phone.
The good type inspires you to see what can come of it. The bad type, in contrast, tires you and makes you feel like you can't be bothered to do anything. An important part of our modern task, then, is learning to evaluate these different types of boredom ― to distinguish the useful kind from the harmful one.
A. And there is, of course, bad boredom.
B. Bored subjects came up with more creative ideas.
C. But what if boredom is a meaningful experience?
D. These moments are a lot more valuable than expected.
E. Actually, tips on getting away from boredom are countless.
F. We try to kill every moment of boredom with mobile devices.
G. When not satisfied with your state, you're seeking and engaged.

Victor Borge once wrote, "Laughter is the closest distance between two people." Yet laughter isn't always positive for relationships. Think of your friend laughing at your embarrassing mistake. This kind of unshared laughter can have the opposite effect.
Now, a new study explores when laughter works as a social glue. While all genuine laughter may help us feel good, shared laughter may communicate to others that we have a similar worldview, which strengthens our relationships.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina found a way to produce shared laughter to measure experimentally how it might impact a relationship with a stranger. Participants watched a funny, not-so-funny, or not-funny-at-all video while video-chatting with another same-sex participant. Unknown to them, the video chat displayed a pre-recorded clip (片段) of someone laughing the same amount for each of the two funny videos, but only smiling occasionally during the unfunny video. This produced more shared laughter in the first situation, less shared laughter in the second, and no shared laughter in the third. Afterwards, the participants then filled out questionnaires about their sense of similarity to their video partner, and how much they liked or wanted to get to know their video partner.
Results showed that, across the different videos, the amount of shared laughter had consistent (一致的) effects on the participants' sense of similarity to the video partner ― and that this, in turn, increased how much participants liked their partner and wanted to affiliate with him or her. "For people who are laughing together, shared laughter signals that they see the world in the same way, and it momentarily improve their sense of connection," says Sara Algoe, co-author of the study.
How can we put these findings into practice? Algoe suggests that relationship partners may want to find opportunities to laugh together in order to boost closeness, especially before having difficult conversations. Likewise, shared laughter could be introduced into staff meetings to make people feel more on the same page and thus become more productive.

Almost everyone agrees that art is important, but they disagree on whether governments, using taxpayers' public money, should be funding it. Also, if governments do spend money on art, what artworks should they buy and for what purpose?
Most governments purchase well-known artworks for public galleries, such as the Metropolitan in New York, the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Uffizi in Florence, which are all free to the public. Most people do not object to public money being spent on keeping great artworks available to the public eye. However, there are some types the public are often not so happy about supporting.
In the 1980s when most people seemed to have lost interest in art, the Turner Prize was started in order to regain public's attention again. This is a contemporary art award supported by taxpayers. In 1999, the Turner Prize came under great public criticism when Tracey Emin was shortlisted for the prize for her work called "My Bed". "My Bed" was her actual bed which she had lain in for days following a relationship breakup. To some, this was a breakthrough and some visitors even jumped into the bed and rolled around. To others, it was simply a dive into the depths of human depravity (堕落).
But is the kind of "work"done by Emin "art"? And should the public pay for it, especially when it is so controversial (有争议的)?
Western art is certainly at a crossroads. Does it keep exploring the dark side or does it seek an ideal beauty? Perhaps the answer depends on the public at large and the values they hold. Many people were pleased when Richard Wright won the Turner Prize in 2009 with his fresco (壁画). Its artistic beauty, poetic nature and use of historic tradition might shows that society is looking for something more positive and "rooted" in its history again. If public money is spent on art, it is essential that the public play a key role in debating both art, and what art they are willing to pay for.
(1)、Why are some galleries mentioned in Paragraph 2?A、They are well known worldwide. B、They appeal to the public. C、They offer free admission. D、They are publicly funded.(2)、What do we know about "My bed"?A、It's a controversial painting. B、It caused opposing reactions. C、It seeks ideal beauty and truth. D、It goes against contemporary art.(3)、Which word can best describe the public's attitude to Wright's fresco?A、Appreciative. B、Opposed. C、Doubtful. D、Unhappy.(4)、Who should have the final say on public investment in art according to the passage?A、Artists. B、The government. C、Taxpayers. D、Turner Prize winners.
