  • 1、In recent months, the U. S. media and politicians have launched fierce attacks on China's new energy industry, claiming that China has flooded the world with too many clean products, including solar power, new energy vehicles and lithium-ion batteries, which have lowered market prices and hurt American workers and factories. However, experts' data and analysis overturned the Western argument about overcapacity (产能过剩).

Exports do not mean overcapacity. In a global economy with a high division of labor and specialization, it is normal for a country's productive capacity to go beyond its domestic demand. For example, about 80% of the cars produced in Germany are exported. Commercial aircraft giants Airbus and Boeing export most of their planes to other countries. While Chinese clean technology accounts for only a small fraction of China's exports, about 4.5 percent last year, far less than Germany. In fact, the Global Electric Vehicle Outlook, released last year, claimed that the global demand for new electric vehicles will reach 45 million units, which China's new energy products do not go beyond.

America's new energy industry falls behind due to underinvestment in green technology and infrastructure (基础设施). Take wind energy for example. A recent report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) shows that the United States is struggling in its development of wind energy. Building a wind farm requires huge turbine blades (涡轮叶片) and a lot of custom engineering to produce huge towers and foundations, which makes wind energy difficult to trade between countries, so the supply chain needed to run a wind farm smoothly faces great trouble.

China is the only country with enough supply chains to keep wind energy growing without difficulties. Chinese Vice Finance Minister Liao Min said green technology products in China will help the country meet its carbon emission targets and contribute to the global response to climate change and green development.

  • 2、Our school owned a boat named Jolie Brise. It was one of the most famous tall ships in the world and three times winner of the Fastnet Race. The boat was unusual: especially for a remote grammar school in Wiltshire, about as far away from the sea as it can get in England. Obviously, such a site didn't match its fame.

Mr Parish had originally intended to join the Royal Navy but ended up as a teacher at our school. Some pupils guessed that he still felt the call of the ocean-perhaps because his lessons were almost entirely devoted to navigation(航海). They argued that it was deeply unfair to learn about navigation but never actually go to sea. Then Mr. Parish, seeing a bunch of young people prepared to crew the boat, allowed them to sail her in return for working on the boat. And that was the beginning of the school sailing club.

By the time I arrived, the sailing club had grown. At weekends, we would work on her all day, cleaning and painting her, and collapse into sleeping bags on the floor at night. Then came the big day when a school sailing trip was announced. Its destination was Saint-Malo. But it also meant that we had to refit the ship by removing every piece of ballast(压舱物)and replacing the bilge water(底舱污水)before we were allowed to sail.

And I did learn the ropes on that school trip. I learned how to operate a ship in the high waves. I learned the meaning of teamwork and became a better team player. I also learned that the best fish is the one that you have caught and cooked yourself from a boat that you have rebuilt and sailed yourself.

(1)、What was unusual about the boat Jolie Brise?
A、It was in a perfect condition. B、Its lawful owner was Mr. Parish. C、It won glory for the Royal Navy. D、Its location wasn't as famous as it was.
(2)、Why was the sailing club set up?
A、The crew were selected. B、The boat needed workers. C、Mr. Parish tried to explore the sea. D、Students asked to practice navigation.
(3)、What finally made the school sailing trip possible?
A、The club's permission. B、Mr. Parish's sailing experience. C、The students' preparing the ship for it. D、The school's offering financial support.
(4)、What does the underlined phrase "learn the ropes" in paragraph 4 mean?
A、Learn to cook. B、Master useful skills. C、Ensure sailing safety. D、Use ropes properly.
  • 3、The famous magazine, Runner's World, has chosen some of the best, most difficult and enjoyable UK races.

Top of the Wolds 10K Challenge

This 10-km countryside track in Yorkshire is all fun until you take the left turn at Nunburnholme. At this point, you enter a serious uphill part, but thankfully the uphill part only lasts for around 1.5km. You'll have about a kilometre to enjoy the views before the way takes you downhill again, and back to where you started in Warter — a cute little village.

    Scurry2Bridges Run

This 161-km relay race is divided into 16 parts, so you each run 4 separate parts. Over the course of this day-long adventure, you'll each run about marathon distance while the workers will drive around for pick-ups and drop-off s at relay exchange points between the start in Dundee and the finish in Edinburgh.

    Scafell Sky Race

Here's a trail run (越野跑) that is not suitable for beginners. With a total of 3,500 m of ascent (上坡路), this is unquestionably one of the hardest events around. Good thing is that the views are beautiful, and that there's hot food and a bottle of apple juice waiting for you in the end.

    Offa's Dyke 15

The traditional 15-mile distance begins at the Clock Tower in Hay-on-Wye and includes a few hard climbs before finishing in Kington. This year the hard event has added a challenging 10 km around Kington.

(1)、What do we know about Scurry2Bridges Run?
A、It has an uphill part about 16 km. B、It is a relay race made up of 16 parts. C、It is a relay race with 161 miles. D、Runners are forbidden to throw items.
(2)、Which race best suits racers who want to enjoy food at the end of a race?
    A、Scafell Sky Race. B、Offa's Dyke 15. C、Top of the Wolds 10K Challenge. D、Scurry2Bridges Run.
(3)、What do the four races have in common?
A、They are held in the countryside. B、They ask runners to take part alone. C、They are tough but exciting races. D、They can provide the runners with food.

Eighteen-year-old Robert was born with an excellent musical gift. There was something in his voice that charmed everyone. His family was not well-off and his parents had no money to send him to music classes. But on his own, Robert learned to play the guitar. His voice was so soft and beautiful that he dreamed of becoming a singer in the future.

One day when he was walking home through the college corridor, he glanced at the notice board and knew there would be a music competition at the college. He was excited and decided to take part. "How do I find a peaceful place to compose a song?" While he was struggling with this problem, he saw an ad for an apartment to rent. He dialed the number on the ad and the old landlord told him that his flat was available at 600 dollars a month. The rent was too high. Robert asked whether he could pay half, and then pay the rest without a deposit (押金). To his surprise, the old man agreed.

Robert moved to the flat with his guitar and played songs every day. Many days passed, yet he didn't write even a single line of his new song. With only one week left, he was totally depressed. Suddenly, he heard a knock on the door and went to answer it. It was his landlord.

Robert was puzzled by the gentleman's visit when he spoke. "I live upstairs. Actually, I'm hearing music from you many days." "Yeah, I'm preparing for a competition," said Robert. "Well, the melody (旋律) was too monotonous (单调的). But if you don't mind, can I help you?" Robert was surprised that the old man was so frank with him. He nodded in agreement. The old man took the guitar and played a beautiful piece. Robert stared at him in shock. He had never heard such a beautiful song ever before. To Robert's amazement, it turned out that the old man was a retired music professor.

Years later, I revisited the6 at work when I was tasked with creating a perfect chocolate chip cookie7 for a magazine feature. In all that time, I've made12: overcooked them, undercooked them, tried cookies that were13 cakey; ones that burned around the edge but were still raw in the centre. In the words of Thomas Edison: I did not14 — I simply found multiple ways that didn't work, and it ultimately led to me learning many tricks to get the kind of cookie I15.

  • 8、Whether personal or professional, you likely have goals you're striving to achieve. Yet, as much as you want to accomplish a certain goal or task, you may sometimes wonder how to motivate yourself..

    Find a responsible partner

Having a responsible partner can be an effective type of motivation to help you stay on track. Telling others about your plans or goals might help you feel more encouraged to actually achieve them.

    Shake up your environment

. Creating a welcoming environment that feels good to be in and contributes to staying focused on your goals is important. Small details like plenty of sunlight or adding a plant to your desk can all help.

Sometimes, it can be easy to lose motivation if you feel like you're not making enough progress toward a big goal. If you start to feel this way, reflect on your progress. You might be surprised to look back and realize just how far you've come.

When measuring progress, focus on measuring behaviors over results. For example, if you want to become a better writer and publish a story, measure your research, drafts, and discussions on the topic.. Even though you don't have complete control over the outcome, you have full control over your behaviors.

    Schedule breaks in your day

Breaks allow your brain to rest and digest all the information you've just taken in.. For example, surfing the Internet still requires your brain to process information and make decisions. Doing a small chore, going for a walk, or taking a power coffee nap are all great alternatives.

    A. Track your progress

    B. Stay optimistic and trust yourself

    C. In fact, even a short break helps avoid burnout

    D. Our working environments are full of distractions

    E. Managing to write a little bit every day is even better

    F. The following tips can serve as guides on how to get motivated

    G. However, not all types of breaks provide the same amount of restfulness

  • 9、The tall, stony coastlines of the northeast Pacific Ocean are much quieter than they were. Following a punishing oceanic heat wave in the region, the noisy seabirds that once crowded the sea cliffs are now greatly thinned, to a quarter of their former size in some places. This sudden loss of millions of birds, and probably many other animals, may be the largest wildlife death event recorded in modern times.

The story begins in late 2014, when a violent oceanic heat wave "Blob" parked itself over the Pacific northeast, raising ocean temperatures far above normal for almost two years. It cooked up an ecological chain reaction, reducing phytoplankton (浮游植物) populations and in turn the forage fish that seabirds like common murres eat. In 2015 and 2016, the birds collectively starved to death.

"We knew right away that it was a big disaster," says Renner, a wildlife biologist with U. S. Fish and Wildlife at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge in Homer. "There were 62,000 carcasses that washed up on the beaches, all over the Gulf of Alaska, all the way down to California. It was clearly a big deal, but we couldn't really quantify the size of the death very well."

The scale and speed of the seabird population collapse is shocking, says Simon Tye, an ecologist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville who wasn't involved with the research. "It was pretty heartbreaking."

Tye and Renner both point out that with continued climate warming, heat waves like the "Blob" are expected to occur more frequently. This could endanger already vulnerable populations of many animals that have yet to recover in an ocean ecosystem affected by the previous heat wave.

While there's little immediate human control over oceanic heat waves, Renner says the findings underscore the importance of other conservation efforts for seabirds. This may include removing invasive predators or other species that - alongside climatic swings - create an additive stress on seabird populations.

"The top of the food web going away, I think that's really important," Tye says. "It should be an ominous (不祥的) thing for everybody."

(1)、What happened about a decade ago?
A、Millions of seabirds died of hunger. B、Overfishing caused an ecological chain reaction. C、"Blob" came into being and disturbed the whole world. D、Temperatures rose up to the highest recorded in modern times.
(2)、What does the underlined word "carcasses" in paragraph 3 mean?
    A、Birds alive. B、Ocean fishes. C、Bodies. D、Objects.
(3)、What is Tye and Renner's attitude toward the ocean ecosystem?
    A、Optimistic. B、Concerned. C、Prejudiced. D、Indifferent.
(4)、What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A、Human activities have directly caused global warming. B、The food web for seabird populations has improved a lot. C、Other species may pose a threat to the survival of seabirds. D、People should stress the importance of protecting other species.
  • 10、A study published in Geology introduces a new method for understanding earthquake behavior that could transform how we prepare for these natural disasters. The research focuses on curved scratches left on fault planes (断层面) when massive blocks of Earth grind past each other during an earthquake. These marks, called "slickenlines", work somewhat like tire marks at a crash scene, revealing the direction of movement.

To understand how these ancient marks could help save lives, the research team turned to New Zealand's Alpine Fault. The researchers focused their investigation on a fascinating section of the Alpine Fault known as an "earthquake gate". This region can either stop earthquakes in their tracks or allow them to continue their journey, a decision that has enormous consequences. When earthquakes push through this gate, they transform from magnitude 7.5 events into far more powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquakes, dramatically increasing their potential for destruction.

The implications of this research reach far beyond New Zealand's shores. "The scratches indicate the direction and origin of a past earthquake, potentially giving us clues about where a future quake might start and where it will go. This is key for California, where anticipating the direction of a quake on faults like San Andreas or San Jacinto could mean a more accurate forecast of its impact," Barth, UC Riverside geologist and lead author, notes.

Understanding the direction of earthquake movement isn't just academic curiosity, it could provide crucial extra minutes of warning time for vulnerable populations. Consider Los Angeles: if a major earthquake begins near the Salton Sea and moves northward along the San Andreas fault, it would direct intense energy toward the city. However, this scenario could also give residents about a minute's warning through cellular alert systems — precious time that could allow people to take cover, stop medical procedures, or shut down critical systems.

    (1)、What are "slickenlines"?
A、Special planes used by geologists. B、Bending lines drawn by researchers. C、Ancient marks caused by earthquakes. D、Tire scratches left by vehicle accidents.
(2)、Why is the "earthquake gate" mentioned?
A、To reveal the secret of the earth. B、To show the significance of the area. C、To suggest how powerful nature might be. D、To prove the destructive degree of earthquakes.
(3)、What's the purpose of the study according to paragraph 3?
A、To inform us what may cause earthquakes. B、To discover a way to fight against earthquakes. C、To better prevent the occurrence of earthquakes. D、To predict how earthquake might affect different areas.
(4)、What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A、The meaning of the study. B、How the earthquake moves. C、The example of an earthquake. D、What to do during the earthquake.
  • 11、One summer, my friend Shelia and I took our pre-teen children and their friends to Liberty land, an amusement park in Memphis, Tennessee. It was an extremely hot day.

By mid-afternoon, Shelia and I were worn out, while the kids were still energetic. We decided to rest in the outdoor theatre while the children continued riding. The theatre, though shaded, had no air conditioning.

A show was about to begin as we sat down. Despite the small audience of about 20 people looking for a cool place to sit, the teenage performers delivered an energetic and lively performance with rock and roll music.

In the end, the audience gave only polite, half-hearted applause. However, Shelia stood up and cheered loudly as if she had seen the most amazing Broadway production in her life. She explained to me, "These are someone else's kids. Since their moms aren't here, we need to support them." I was deeply moved by Shelia's words. I had never thought about it that way before. I joined Shelia in cheering for these hard-working young performers.

This happened over six years ago, but Shelia's words have stayed with me. Now, I try to remember that the teenagers I meet in various service jobs are all someone's children. I make an effort to treat them as I would want others to treat my own children.

Thanks, Shelia, for applying the golden rule — "Treat others' children as you would want them to treat yours!" This experience taught me the importance of supporting and encouraging young people, even when they're not our own, and how a small act of kindness can make a difference.

(1)、Why did Shelia and the author decide to rest in the outdoor theatre?
A、They needed a break from the extreme heat. B、They desired to enjoy a Broadway-style show. C、They were asked to leave the rides and take a seat. D、They intended to approach the performers more closely.
(2)、Why did Shelia cheer loudly for the teenage performers?
A、She wanted to set a good example for her own children. B、She hoped to encourage more performances at the park. C、She felt the need to support them in their parents' absence. D、She was impressed by their professional-level performance.
(3)、How has the author's behavior changed since this experience?
A、She always cheers loudly at every performance. B、She attends more theatrical shows with her children. C、She avoids taking children to amusement parks on hot days. D、She treats young people in service jobs with more consideration.
(4)、What is the best title of the text?
A、The Challenges of Bringing up Pre-teens. B、The Benefits of Visiting Amusement Parks. C、The Difficulties of Performing in Hot Weather. D、The Importance of Encouraging Young People.

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Daisy. Sure, it had been six months since she'd gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.

She was a beautiful lady, her fur a soft blend of brown, gold, and black stripes (条纹). Most importantly, she was a smart cat. I used to take her everywhere I could in a carrier (猫笼), and she was so clever that she learned to walk into it on her own, something I never thought a cat would do. At home, Daisy would enjoy a good nap curled up inside my parents' fireplace. We loved her so much that she was in the family's Christmas picture every year. So, we wouldn't like her missing this year's.

Dad always supported me, but he was so skeptical. He spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst despite the fact that he spent all six months looking for the cat. "She's either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her," he said. I rolled my eyes! He could do with a little more faith! Besides, though I couldn't explain it, I knew I'd see Daisy again. She'd been a stray (走失的宠物) when I found her — a tough little girl that had survived all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Daisy.

This Christmas, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Daisy's cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she'd been found. My eyes scanned cats of all shapes and sizes at the shelter. Much to my disappointment, none of them was my Daisy. We drove through the town without rest, checking every shelter and asking everyone we could find, but each response was the same: no one had seen her. Finally, we pulled over in front of the last shelter in town.

Some were rich with apple trees. Others were covered with wood and broken metal. But more than the scenery and steps taken, the biggest discovery was the thoughtful5 shared between us.

I admitted my fondness for romance novels. Martha revealed she was6 with tiny free libraries. There is a calming joy in7 the pavement; along with a(n)8 of talk that comes without the face-to-face intensity. With every footstep, we became better listeners and our friendship9.

Sure, as winter10, there were some days we wanted to stay in our beds, but what had started as a cheerful project had become11, a meet-up essential to our mental and physical health.

Three years and six pairs of shoes later, we had12 the 542.4 kilometers. We have been13 changed by what started as a "what if" project. Now, full of14, we are planning our next big walking adventure. As long as we are able, we'll keep15 ourselves out of bed to put one foot in front of the other. By doing so, we'll continue to find ourselves and each other.

    Understanding Group Study

Group study is a common practice among students of all ages. It is commonly believed to be an effective way to supplement individual learning.

When studying in a group, it is important to establish clear goals and expectations. Each member should have a role and responsibility to ensure that the group stays on track. He or she can guide the group and make sure everyone is participating. Group study can be beneficial in many different ways.

Each member brings a unique perspective and set of skills to the group, which can enhance the learning experience. It can also be helpful to have someone explain a concept or problem in a different way, which can make it easier to understand.

Group study can also increase motivation and responsibility. When studying alone, it can be easy to procrastinate (拖延) or lose focus. This can help keep everyone on track and motivated to complete the task at hand.

Despite those benefits, group study can present challenges. Some members may prefer visual aids, while others may prefer hands-on activities or auditory learning. External distractions, such as noise or interruptions, can also be a challenge in group study. However, by working collaboratively, group members can overcome these challenges and have a successful study session.

Overall, group study can be a valuable tool for students of all ages. By working together, students can enhance their learning experience and achieve their academic goals.

    A. It is also important to have an appointed leader.

    B. It is common to encounter different learning styles.

    C. Group study can have a positive impact on preventing study-related stress.

    D. One of the benefits is the opportunity to share knowledge and learn from others.

    E. Therefore, studying in a group requires careful planning, communication, and collaboration.

    F. However, when studying in a group, every member has a sense of responsibility to the other members.

    G. It involves studying in a group of two or more people, where each member contributes to the learning process.

Jennifer Anderson, an expert in aquatic fungi(水生真菌), said that the subject of her research was not available in emoji(表情符号) form. "If you are doing the important work of trying to save whales, you can use pictures or images to help you communicate this," said Anderson. "If you are working to save the aquatic fungi, you first must let people know that they exist, and then describe in words what they look like."

Struck by their conversation with Anderson and alarmed at how unusual species were ignored, the Italian scientists set out to find out how well species were represented in the emoji library. The answer wasn't satisfactory at all: animals were well represented by available emojis but plants, fungi and microorganisms(微生物) were not. "Our findings confirm a typical prejudice in biodiversity research and a feature of human psychology," said Mammola. "We usually feel more caring and sympathetic towards living things that are genetically closer to us."

"A good representation of species on social media can arouse interest in unfamiliar organisms, greatly help publicize the message that biodiversity is much more than just cats, dogs, lions and pandas, and indirectly help conservation efforts," said Mammola. "There are an impressive number of organisms, and all of them play a fundamental role on our planet, even the ones we know less about."

Some scientists have taken steps to describe their research on their phone keyboards with images instead of words. However, according to Mammola, the number of animal species represented rose from 45 in 2015 to 92 in 2022, yet the number of plants, fungi and microorganisms represented barely increased.

Anderson said she wanted emojis for organisms like aquatic fungi as reflections of increased public awareness and indicators of their ecological value. "Having an emoji indicates that an organism is valued or important enough to be part of daily conversation," she said.

    (1)、What did Anderson complain about?
A、Lack of available emojis for aquatic fungi. B、People's disinterest in studying aquatic fungi. C、People's unwillingness to save aquatic fungi. D、Difficulty in describing aquatic fungi in words.
(2)、Why are animal species better represented than other species?
A、They are more common species. B、They matter more to biodiversity. C、They encourage human sympathy. D、They help remove human prejudice.
(3)、What is the benefit of a good representation of species on social media?
A、Facilitating communication between scientists. B、Making biodiversity research more satisfactory. C、Deepening people's understanding of biodiversity. D、Helping people grasp complex concepts of science.
(4)、What is Mammola's attitude toward the progress of emoji biodiversity?
    A、Unclear. B、Unsatisfied. C、Doubtful. D、Hopeful.

It might be something that makes your week worth it or how you get through a stressful day. Still, you may feel embarrassment or shame if you admit to it. This is why "guilty pleasures" exist. It comes from the idea that when we treat ourselves, it can sometimes leave us feeling guilty.

Perhaps we don't feel we deserved it, or we don't think it was a responsible way to spend our money. What if we told you that you shouldn't feel bad about your guilty pleasures and that they are actually fantastic for you? Keep reading to discover why you should indulgeoccasionally.

Psychologists say that buying things for yourself can make you feel better because it gives you a chance to take control of your situation. It can also give you social contact and a confidence boost from changes you make to your self-image. When you feel under the weather, treating yourself might be the lift you need. When you buy a treat, you might just be looking after yourself and maintaining a positive outlook.

Permitting yourself to enjoy things can help you deal with symptoms of anxiety and depression. It can even be a protective factor against depression. Life isn't easy, and when we're struggling, we need to be kind to ourselves. Indulging in the things that bring us joy can envelop us in comfort during tough times. As long as your guilty pleasure is harmless, there is no reason not to do it. Our brain's neural pathways light up when we do things we enjoy. This makes it easier to gain feelings of happiness.

As we said earlier, guilt and happiness can be mixed up in our minds. Rather than fighting them or trying to replace them, welcome them. Eventually, embracing these feelings can enhance your overall well-being and happiness.
