Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Theodore Roosevelt once said, " Comparison is the thief of joy. " But how can we slop playing the comparison game? Here are may tips. 

●

Besides social media, are there any other situations that cause you to play the comparison game? Is there a certain person who is constantly showing off about this or that? Are there certain activities，like strolling(漫步) through a high-end shopping mall，that make you envious? Write how each negatively affects you. Try to stop yourself next time. 

●Remind yourself that other people's "outsides" can't be compared to your "insides. "

Usually，you can't use their outward appearance to judge the reality of their life. You may have had the experience of being shocked when a couple that appeared to be happy and solid announce their divorce. Continue to wish others well, of course, but remind yourself that you don't actually know what goes on behind closed doors. 

●Repeat whenever necessary: "Money doesn't buy happiness."

It's well established that wealth isn't associated with increased happiness. I used to dance flamenco at a fancy resort where very rich people go，and a manager there once told me she'd never seen so many unhappy people in her life. Their inability to provide lasting contentment is usually more disappointing than anything else. 

●Be grateful for the good in your life.

lf you commit yourself to being deeply grateful for what's good in your life and remind yourself of it daily，you'll be far less defenseless to comparison and envy. If someone or something triggers (引发) that ugly feeling of negative comparison，stop and remind yourself of what's good in your life，right now.

D. Money and things provide temporary boosts of joy. 

E. Make a list of who and what you frequently compare yourself to.

During the last 12 months, have you looked at photographs with family or friends? During the last 12 months，have you taken any photographs or videos to preserve memories? In the nationwide survey in 1995 of nearly 1, 500 people，91% of respondents (受访者） said they'd looked at photographs with family or friends and83% had taken a photograph in the past year. If the survey were repeated today，those numbers would certainly be higher. The popularity of smartphone cameras and social media has led to an increase in photo-taking and sharing, from capturing everyday moments to special occasions. 

So are all of these captured moments，these personal memories，a part of history? For historians Roy Rosenzweig and David Thelen, the answer is YES，and they believe the very concept of history is developing. They led the 1995 survey to understand how people thought about the past. This groundbreaking study was welcomed by historians and those working in museums，because it helped them to think about the public's understanding of their field. 

Little did Rosenzweig and Thelen know the subject of history was about to be affected by a host of technologies. For example, over a third of the survey's respondents said they had researched their family history. The activity got much easier the following year，when Paul Brent Allen and Dan Taggart launched Ancestry. com，which is now one of the largest online genealogical(宗谱的) databases. Researching your family tree no longer means studying documents in the local library. 

The survey also asked whether respondents had watched a movie or television show about history in the last year; four-fifths responded they had. The survey was conducted shortly before the 1 January 1995 launch of the History Channel， which opened the floodgates on history-themed TV. Nowadays，streaming services let people watch historical documentaries non stop on demand. 

Today，people aren't just watching history. They're recording it and sharing it in real time. As these technologies become commonplace，they are rewriting the official account of history. Maybe the best way to think about Rosenzweig and Thelen's survey is that it offered a snapshot(快照)of public habits，as those habits were about to change unavoidably. 

Most people walk. But that seemingly simple act is actually a series of movements，each requiring their own timing and path。Not only that，everybody has a special style of walking, and if you know someone well enough，you can probably identify him by his movements，even from far away. 

A new paper published in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior presents a technique for making assumptions about a person's entire personality based on their walk. The 29participants first took the Big Five Inventory，a commonly used personality test helping predict patterns in a person's thought and behavior，social skills，tendency to worry, creativity and intellect and extraversion(外向性). The researchers then recorded and analyzed the gaits (步态) of each participant. 

"We found that larger relative-upper-to-lower body movement was a strong predictor of aggression, " says co-author Liam Satchell，a PhD student at the University of Portsmouth. This research mathematically explains previous research where distinctive"gait was helpful in predicting upcoming crimes through security cameras。lf police officers were trained in recognizing aggressive gaits，they might be able to prevent crimes before they happened. Satchell adds，"Possibly a further scientific exploration could reveal more evidence that the behaviors of another person can be predicted from how they move through space. "

One such study has come out recently. PLOS Computational Biology published a model to predict the probability of the path and timing of the parts of the movement shared by all people, and even the movements shared by people who have similar personality traits (特点) or are in the same moods - like people who are aggressive or bad-tempered. 

Dr. Lars Lau Rake，a postdoctoral researcher a the University of Copenhagen, says，"In our model，we can combine information from thousands of movement patterns to get precise information about the structure of the movement, which ultimately allows us to judge whether the movement of an individual differs significantly from what we would expect to see in a given situation. "

About 15 years ago, I was working at a sewing (缝纫) machine when I lost focus and put the needle straight through my left middle finger - the wound never quite recovered. I's the kind of warming teachers tell new sexists，but it also creates a metaphor for a feeling that maybe familiar to the 7. 7 million people who enjoy sewing as a hobby: the effect of sewing lives on under our skin. It's a theme that runs through historian Barbara Barman's book exploring the cultural history of sewing: The Point of the Needle: Why Serving Matters. For Barbara，her own interest in sewing is something that can be traced back through her life. 

"I grew up in a poor household, and I had two very practical parents, "she recalls. "My mother actually taught sewing，dressmaking，and soft tailoring，so I was surrounded by people making things and talking about tools. My interest in sewing comes from an interest in the history of ordinary people，particularly women's lives. I feel that it's a kind of untold story. We're so used to it that we don't think about it. We put our clothes on，and there we are. But l wanted to look at what sewing actually means at an individual level, as well as a more global level. "

We notice the invention of electricity and countless other creations-but sewing, despite the fact that we couldn't go about our daily lives without it，is often overlooked. When I ask Barbara why the story of sewing is largely untold， she has some insight. 

"Mostly because it's connected so thoroughly with women，and women have always been，as it were。' second rate', " she explains. "We've also lived with this quite false separation between working with our brains and working with our hands. So manual work is thought of as secondary to head work. But，in fact，our hands，and particularly our sense of touch，give us such a huge amount of information in the world. Countless studies have confirmed how beneficial crafts can be for our mental health and well-being. "

Finally, mercifully, the bell rang! We threw on our coats, gathered our homework and our lunch boxes, tied on our scarves and then, carefully, we cradled our offerings of love and off we ran to our individual homes! I was so excited! I ran as fast as I could down the hill, across the street, up the block, heading home. I paused at the corner of my house, to catch my breath and savor the moment. Then I glanced down to admire my offering one last time before I hung it lovingly over the doorknob. Horrors! Shock, dread and depression! My flowers were gone! Apparently, bouncing out on my mad dash home, all that was left was a sad, messed-up, wrinkled little empty basket! I stood on the doorway and burst into mournful sobbing tears.

The Mount Changbaishan Geopark, along with five other Chinese geoparks,  (recognize) as a Global Geopark by UNESCO on March 57. The number of Global Geoparks in China has increased to 47, making the country with the most such geoparks in the world. 

"China is rich in geological heritage, with a broad distribution and a complete range of geological types," Ren Fang,  expert with the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, told People's Daily. "It is one of the first countries worldwide to propose and establish national geoparks." 

China set up national-level geoparks and began applying for Global Geopark status in 2003 in response to UNESCO's initiative  (establish) the Global Geoparks Network (GGN) . In 2004, Beijing witnessed the First International Conference on Geoparks,  17 European geoparks and eight Chinese geoparks joined the GGN. The network aims to promote best  (practice) and high standards for the conservation of geological heritage and the promotion of  (sustain) regional economic development.

Juleus Ghunta is a published children's author and award-winning poet. But when young, he could1 read. 

He grew up with his three sisters in rural Western Jamaica, raised by their single mother. Life was tough, and proper schooling was out of the question due to 2 resources. 

When Ghunta finally went to school, he couldn't 3 on reading. Not only had he been kept home from school as a child, but he had not been 4 to books. 

By sixth grade, he could spell his name, but still couldn't make out words or read with 5 . He struggled in school with a deep sense of 6 and worthlessness. 

At age 12, a young teacher-in-training 7 a special reading program for 8 students. Ghunta was the first to join. That teacher, whose name he does not 9 now, became Ghunta's unsung hero — the person who changed his life.

Being overly emotional may mean reacting to negative feelings quickly instead of letting your intelligence weigh in. Chances are that you are relating to your emotions in a way that isn't always constructive if you feel overly emotional.  Here are approaches to make it. 

Identify your emotions. It's important to know what you feel so that you can address each emotion appropriately.  If you feel anger, for instance, you may start to notice your breathing quickening, your muscles tensing, or your skin feeling flushed. If you're happy, you may notice smiling or feelings of lightness in your limbs. 

Interpret each emotion's message.  For instance, you may feel anxiety as a way to express fear of something. Emotions can set off emotional or physical perceived stressors that we choose to move toward or away from. When your emotions come up, ask them what they are conveying to you. 

Increase your empathy (共情). Empathy means observing your emotions less but the emotions of those around you more. If you find yourself focusing largely on your own emotions, take a step back and notice the emotions of the people around you.  Increasing your empathy helps you relate to people more effectively, respect their emotional experience, and take the spotlight off of yourself. 

 Sometimes it's difficult to relate to your emotions positively or cannot find ways to control your emotions. A therapist (治疗师) can help you process your difficult emotions while also providing an opportunity for you to release your emotions in a positive and constructive way. Your therapist should be someone you can trust and with whom you are comfortable sharing personal or embarrassing things.

Computer scientist Pascale Fung can imagine a bright future in which AI helpers like ChatGPT bridge language barriers. In that world, Indonesian store owners fluent only in local dialects might reach new shoppers by listing their products online in English. 

"It can open opportunities," Fung says—then pauses. She's spotted the bias (偏好) in her vision of a more interconnected future: The AI-aided shopping would be one-sided, because few Americans would bother to use AI translation to help research products advertised in Indonesian. Fung, director of the Center for AI Research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who herself speaks seven languages, sees this bias in her own field. Fung would like to see Al change that, not further strengthen the primary position of English. 

Fung is part of a global community of AI researchers testing the language skills of ChatGPT and sounding the alarm about evidence that they are significantly less capable in languages other than English. "One of my biggest concerns is that we're going to exacerbate the bias for English and English speakers," says Thien Huu Nguyen, a University of Oregon computer scientist. "People are going to follow the norm (标准) and not think about their own identities or culture. It kills innovation." 

The AI systems are good at translating other languages into English, but they struggle with rewriting English into other languages. Nguyen's study reports that tests on ChatGPT in March showed it performed substantially (基本上) worse at answering factual questions or summarizing complex text in non-English languages and was more likely to fabricate (捏造) information. "This is an English sentence, so there is no way to translate it to Vietnamese," the robot responded inaccurately to one question. 

At a US conference, Senator Alex Padilla of California asked Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT's creator, OpenAI, which is based in the state, what his company is doing to close the language gap. About 44 percent of Californians speak language other than English. Padilla, who also speaks Spanish, is questioning about the systems delivering fair linguistic (语言的) outcomes without big shifts in strategies by their developers. 

One summer night in a seaside cottage, a boy felt himself lifted from bed. Then, with the swiftness of a dream, he was held in his father's arms out onto the nearby beach. Overhead the sky blazed with stars. "Watch!" Incredibly, as his father spoke, one of the stars moved. In a line of golden fire it flashed across the astonished heavens. And before the wonder of this could fade, another star leaped from its place, then another, plunging towards the restless sea.

"Shooting stars. They come every year on a certain August night. I thought you'd like to see the show." 

That was all: just an unexpected glimpse of something mysterious and beautiful. But, back in bed, the child stared for a long time into the dark, knowing that all around the quiet house, the night was full of the silent music of the falling stars. 

Decades have passed, but I remember that night still, because I was the fortunate boy whose father believed that a new experience was more important for a small boy than an unbroken night's sleep. No doubt I had all the usual childhood entertainment, but those are forgotten now. What I remember is the night of the shooting stars, and the day we rode in a caboose (列车末尾的 职工车厢), the telegraph we made that really worked, and the "trophy table" in the dining room where we children were encouraged to exhibit things we had found — anything unusual or beautiful — snake skins, seashells, flowers, arrowheads... I remember the thought-provoking (引 人深思的) books left by my bedside that pushed back my horizons and sometimes actually changed my life. 

My father had, to a marvellous degree, the gift of opening doors for his children, of leading them into areas of splendid newness. This subtle art of adding dimensions to a child's world doesn't necessarily require a great deal of time. It simply involves doing things more often with our children instead of for them or to them. 

Giant panda Fu Bao arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport in Sichuan province on Wednesday, returning from South Korea. 

Accompanied by veterinarians (兽医) and caregivers from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and Everland Park of South Korea, Fu Bao headed to the isolation and quarantine area. 

In preparation for Fu Bao's return, the giant panda center has set up a quarantine facility at the Wolong Shenshuping Base. During the isolation and quarantine period (在隔离检疫期间), a team of experts will help it adapt to its new living environment. 

Thousands of panda lovers gathered at Everland, the country's largest theme park in Yongin, about 40 km south of the capital Seoul, to say goodbye to the country's top panda celebrity. 

According to the agreement on giant panda protection and research cooperation, overseasborn giant panda cubs are to return to China between the ages of 2 and 4. Fu Bao's return was scheduled for this year. According to Everland Park, over 1,000 visitors came daily to bid farewell to her before the scheduled departure.
