According to research, about 21.5 million American children between the ages of six and seventeen are involved (参与的) in a team sport. But regardless of the reasons for getting involved, children can gain a lot from sports.
A 2006 report shows that taking up sports can increase both emotional and behavioral well-being in teenagers. And increased well-being can lead to higher confidence, which results in better overall performance. In addition, they usually get along well with people around them and are less likely to have bad or risky behavior.
Through this process, children develop social and leadership skills and learn the value of teamwork. Children involved in sports usually have stronger and better relationships with their schoolmates and a better understanding of people from different backgrounds.
Actually, sports give children an opportunity to communicate with adults in valuable and positive ways, which can help them develop closer relationships with adults. This effect is especially great when children don't get along well with their family members.
Although most effects of sports on children are good, there can be disadvantages. If the pressure to win is overemphasized (过分强调) or the expectations of parents or coaches become too great, kids may experience lots of stress. To avoid these bad effects, children should not overemphasize winning but focus on developing certain skills.
A. Being physically fit is linked to having a higher IQ.
B. They may take part in sports for fun or to develop some skills.
C. However, children hardly play sports when they become older.
D. It can cause worries, headaches, stomach aches, and muscle pain.
E. For example, children involved in sports are likely to do well in their studies.
F. Organized sports require children to work together to achieve a common goal.
G. Many children say sports have helped increase their conversations with parents.

As online learning becomes more common and a mass of resources are changed to digital form, some people have suggested that public libraries should be shut down and everyone should be given an iPad with an e-reader subscription (订阅). They believe that it will save local cities and towns money, provide more materials and encourage more people to read.
However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets (平板电脑). First, digital books and resources are related to less learning and more problems than print resources. A study found that people read 20-30% slower on tablets, keep 20% less information, and understand 10% less of what they read. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause more health problems than reading print does.
Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to believe that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have lots of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to communicate with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering visitor questions, and keeping the community connected. One neighborhood found that, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community after a series of local library instituted community events. Similarly, a survey conducted in 2015 found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library would have a major effect on their community.
While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens and end access to many of the benefits of libraries. In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object.
(1)、Which of the following may digital reading supporters agree?A、Libraries cost towns or cities too much money. B、IPads make people's learning less convenient. C、Printed books are more efficient than digital ones. D、Digital books offer more answers than libraries.(2)、How does the writer explain learning problems caused by digital books?A、By telling a story. B、By using some data. C、By describing a scene. D、By doing an experiment.(3)、Why do people prefer physical libraries?A、They can read more books there. B、They can have a personal space for study. C、They can take some exercises in them. D、They can feel closer to their neighbors.(4)、What is the purpose of the passage?A、To inform the residents of activities held in libraries. B、To advertise an effective way to subscribe to e-reader. C、To argue that libraries shouldn't be replaced by tablets. D、To present the reasons of not using tablets in libraries. -

Why do you like the music you do? You would think that it is because of the music itself. But that's only half the story. Surprisingly, the other half of the story doesn't have much to do with music at all. By analyzing the public personalities (个性) of famous musicians, and the personality traits of their fans, a group of researchers found that people prefer the music of artists whose public personalities are similar to their own.
In three separate studies of more than 80,000 people, the researchers looked at several factors: personality ratings of 50 of the most famous musicians, listener reactions to music, and the lyrics in the artists' music. The musicians studied were different, ranging from Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Whitney Houston, The Rolling Stones to Beyonce, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, and Ozzy Osbourne.
The results from the three studies show that the fit in personality between the listener and the musician predicts musical preferences. It's important to note that the public personalities of the musicians were measured, not their real personalities. The findings show how music gives fans a sense of pride and belonging to a social world. Even more, the results shed light on the evolutionary (进化的) origins of music, which say that music evolved as a way to communicate groups' characteristics which helped groups decide whether or not to work with each other. All of those make the findings a major advance in this area of research.
The findings are showing us how music can be a common denominator to bring people together. They can also pave the way for a new approach for record companies to attract audiences. Besides, the findings can be applied to situations involving mental health. For example, in times of stress and uncertainty, listeners can seek music of artists with similar personalities to themselves and feel understood and a sense of connection.
(1)、What are the key factors that influence listeners' preference according to the researchers?A、The lyrics in the music. B、The styles of the music. C、The listeners' former experiences. D、The musicians' public personalities.(2)、Why does the writer consider the findings a major advance?A、They have shown the social power of music. B、They can make people improve their personalities. C、They encourage musicians to produce better music. D、They can help listeners develop better taste in music.(3)、How can you understand the underlined part in the last paragraph?A、A secret. B、A purpose. C、A similarity. D、A skill.(4)、In which section of a magazine may we read the text?A、Health. B、Culture. C、Education. D、Relationship. -

The year was 1937. I was seven years old. And I was with my father and mother, at a Chinese restaurant in Boro Park, Brooklyn. That was the first Chinese restaurant I ever ate at. I was always given food from the adults' orders.
I'm not sure when it was, but the time did come when I had my first order — Won-Ton soup, egg rolls and spare ribs. That made me excited. My father seemed to know the Chinese waiter, a young guy; his name was Jimmy. I remember being surprised that a Chinese man could have an American name.
Some months later, my father took me to a restaurant in Manhattan's Chinatown called The Rathskeller on Mott Street. This was my first time in Chinatown and I was very impressed by how different it was from Boro Park. We went there a few times. I just couldn't have enough of the food there.
In 1951, I was sent to work in the Hospital Treasurer's Office at Letterman Army Hospital. A colleague had an uncle who was a waiter at The Far East Cafe on Grant Avenue in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown. Once a week, a group from the office would go there for lunch and my colleague's uncle would take good care of us. My favorite dish was Tomato Beef Chow Mein.
It wasn't until about 23 years later, in 1974, that I had my next serious relationship with the cuisine (菜肴) of China. I was lucky to take some cooking lessons provided by a famous Chinese restaurant's chef. Then my life entered a new phase (阶段). I didn't know it then, but some time later, it became clear to me that Chinese food would follow me through the days of my life.

C、The environment there was pleasant. D、It offered a chance to learn foreign cultures.(3)、What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?A、He knew Chinese table manners well. B、Chinese food had a lasting influence on him. C、He formed a close friendship with a chef. D、A famous chef helped him run a Chinese restaurant.(4)、How is the text mainly developed?A、By using data. She smiled and held up her hand to give me a high five. "You are joking." Suddenly, I felt tears come from my eyes. "No, really, they didn't pick me," I said and handed her the letter.
"There must be some mistakes. Don't worry and I'll help you contact the advisor." She grabbed the phone and dialed the Honor Society advisor. "Oh, honey, I'm sorry. I thought you were kidding," my mother said. However, from the phone, she was told no mistake was made, and the decisions were final.

Researchers in Australia recently announced a new device(设备) that absorbs water from air to produce drinkable water. They said it can produce up to 1,000 liters of drinkable water a day, adding that it could be "lifesaving during drought or emergencies". What's more, unlike other water generators(造水机), their invention works by heating air instead of cooling it.
Researchers at the University of Newcastle call the device the Hydro Harvester. The device absorbs water from the air. Solar energy or heat from other industrial processes can be used to produce hot and wet air. After heating, the air cools, producing water for drinking or watering crops.
The researchers say the device can produce enough drinking water each day for a small rural town of up to 400 people. It could also help farmers keep their crops alive during droughts. Researchers thought their device would be especially useful in Australia because its climate is dry.
More than 2 billion people around the world will benefit from the device. They are in a situation where they do not have access to high-quality water. The device is meant to help alleviatewater shortage and safety.
Studies of the technology will be done in several Australian communities this year. The World Economic Forum (WEF), a nonprofit group based in Switzerland, says water shortage continues to be a problem worldwide. The WEF said getting water from the atmosphere is a "promising solution that can immediately generate drinkable water using moisture(水汽) in the air". However, the group warns that the technology is costly. It estimates that one mid-sized device could cost between $ 30,000 and $ 50,000. So the group is concerned whether it will be accepted by the public.

D、It can produce drinkable water.(2)、What does the underlined word "alleviate" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Determine. B、Reflect. C、Relieve. In San Francisco,a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39, which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock(码头) officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the region in 15 years.
"Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week," PIER 39 harbor master Sheil a Chandor told many different medias. "The increase in sea lions is usually a good sign of their strong population and healthy living environment," said Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement at the Marine Mammal(海洋哺乳动物) Center in Sausalito, California.
"California sea lions are sentinels(哨兵) of the ocean," Ratner said. Their population to some extent reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of California sea lions is clearly a good thing.
For nearly 35 years, the animals have been a star attraction for visitors. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just been repaired, but the ships had not yet been moved back. At that moment, the sea lions' unexpected arrival not only attracted fans but also created enemies. According to a website, some dock residents and workers were scared away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake.
The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. "The fact proves that this is really a good thing," he said. "This is just a proof of how we can truly work together and think about how we can share our coasts with marine mammals and other wildlife in a way that benefits all the parties involved."
(1)、How does the author start the text?A、By describing a scene. B、By answering a question. C、By holding a conversation. B、Animals and humans can live in harmony. C、Watching sea lions is popular in San Francisco. D、The growing sea lions appear in San Francisco. -
