18、It was a dark night. Thick, dark, gray clouds had made sure that there was no starlight or moon light to1 me as I walked out of my porch (门厅). Still, I kept the porch light off because I didn't want to be2 by bugs and moths (飞蛾) on this sticky3 evening. I stood there for a while letting my eyes adjust to the lack of4.
It was then, though, that I saw them. First one blink of light at the far end of the5 followed by another and then another. I6. I recognized them at once as my firefly (萤火虫) friends, my lightning bug buddies who always7 this time of the year.
When I was little I used to sit in the grass and watch them8 fly around blinking on and off. I never9 and put one in a jar as some kids did because I never wanted to hurt these messengers of light. Their time on this earth was so10 as it was. I tried to enjoy them each night they were here. It always11 me when they disappeared in the fall and it always made my heart sing when they12 the next summer.
We are like them in a lot of ways. Our13 here on earth is brief. Often our light of love is more like on and off blinks rather than a14 shine. Still, we do our best to share it and take15 in knowing that others will be shining their light long after we are gone.

19、How to be a Better Tourist While Abroad
If you want to be a better traveler, here are some tips.
Localize your experience. Support local, small, and family-run businesses. Think of the delicious foods, hand-made goods, and experiences that will keep your body dancing for more. Go on free walking trips led by locals who will teach you about history, culture, and all the must-do things in the area. Whether you're chatting with other travelers or locals around the tour, start a conversation and maybe you'll end up with some new friends.
Select public transportation. Although sometimes it may seem less convenient, choosing public transportation gives you closer access to the local ways of living, seeing your host community from different views, and possibly, reducing your carbon footprint.
When thinking about how to be a good traveler, an easy way to fit into the local community is to learn the customs and traditions and experience the richness of life in this place which is new for you. Let your life be different here than it is at home.
Learn the language. Even if you don't speak the local language fluently before you arrive, it's better to at least learn some basic phrases. Put in the good effort, even if you don't speak the language perfectly. By stepping into a new language in a new location, you can step into a new version of yourself-which is pretty cool when you think about it.
Take part in experiential learning. By doing research before you travel abroad, you will be getting yourself ready for some amazing learning chances. Everyone you meet has knowledge and real-life experiences that you can learn from. Everything you do or come across is an opportunity to learn and grow.
A. Do as the locals do.
B. Take things as they come.
C. This can also be an opportunity to meet people.
D. It may even become a penny saver in the long run.
E. You can record and reflect on your language learning.
F. You should keep your mind, heart, and eyes open for new chances.
G. Remind yourself that making mistakes is part of learning a language.

20、You are given many opportunities in life to choose to be a victim or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. "They" did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. "They" are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as "they" are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, thus internalizing(内化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are individuals who might like to control their lives, but they don't let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don't blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same physical realities, yet their experience of life is worlds apart. Victims relish(沉溺)in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others—and even themselves—to feel like victims, too. Creators consciously choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to determine the direction of their lives.
In reality, all of us play the victim or the creator at various points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and sink into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the grief, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative force in his life.
In every moment and every circumstance, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear intention to transform the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
