Slowly but surely, we're moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.
"5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age," said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. "The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It's pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There's lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.
Augmented reality glasses (AR实境眼镜) and virtual headset (虚拟现实耳机) haven't yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

I once thought that my teenager years were going to be the worst years of my life, because when I was 12 years old, I was a total outsider, was often bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that the real meaning of my life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone's life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela Shiffrin's life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother, Taylor, to ski at a very young age. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her driveway on plastic skis.
Mikaela loved skiing. From ages 8 to 11, she did hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the skills of slalom skiing (障碍滑雪). When Mikaela was 11, she began to learn at the Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont boarding school for skiers. She took classes, studied, and practiced her skiing. According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, "What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now." At age 14, Mikaela began her international career when she raced in the world championships for 13- and 14-year-olds. And she won!
By the time she was 17, she had already won her first World Cup race. "Living away from home four and five months at a time can be difficult," Mikaela says. "But it can also be exciting. I'm getting to see the world." When Mikaela began ski racing in Europe, her mother, Eileen, stayed with her. She worked as her high-school teacher while they were on the road. "She has always been a super-hard worker," says Eileen.
For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. Even her off-season is work time. "If you want something, just try your best," she says. At the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal.

I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me.
"Look at that girl," they said. "Her feet don't leave the ground when she runs!"
Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women's 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.
I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I'd ever have!
"You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet," my classmates all said this to me, including my teacher.
My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, "Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together. " Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.
Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.
One month certainly couldn't make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.
The day finally came!

Many animals use some kinds of "language". They use signals and the signals have meanings. For example, 1 a bee has found some food, it goes 2 its home. 3 is difficult for a bee to tell 4 bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it can do a little dancing. This tells the bees where the food is and 5 it is.
Some animals show 6 they feel by making sounds. It is not difficult to tell if a dog is angry because it barks. Birds make several different sounds and 7 has its meaning. Sometimes we humans make songs in the same way we make sounds like "Oh" to 8 how we feel about 9 or we 10 something on our feet.

20、阅读理解
In many people's eyes, artist Mark Rothko's enormous paintings are nothing more than masses of color. Yet, a painting can be worth nearly $100 million. Besides, Pablo Picasso's twisted faces attract some viewers but terrify others.
Why does the phenomenon happen? The answer may lie in our brain networks. Researchers have now developed an algorithm(算法) that can predict art preference by analyzing how a person's brain breaks down visual information and decides whether a painting is "good". The findings show for the first time how basic features of a painting combine with human judgment to give art value in our minds.
Most people, including researchers, consider art preference to be various, says Anjan Chatterjee, a neurologist(神经学家) at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study. In some cases, personal preference is rooted in biology. For instance, sugary foods help us survive. and people tend to share similar standards of beauty when it comes to human faces and landscapes. However, when it comes to art, we seem to care about and value relatively arbitrary(任意的) things, according to Chatterjee.
To figure out how the brain forms value judgments about art, neuroscientist Kiyohito ligaya and his colleagues first asked more than 1,300 volunteers on the website Amazon Mechanical Turk to rate a selection of 825 paintings from four Western types including impressionism, cubism, abstract art and color field painting. Volunteers were all over the age of 18, but researchers didn't give exact information about their familiarity with art or their ethnic (种族的) or national origin.
The researchers revealed that paintings preferred by the same groups of people tended to share certain visual characteristics. These characteristics all fell into two categories: "Low-level" characteristics, like contrast and color, were intrinsic (固有的) to an image; "High-level" characteristics, like the emotion a painting brought about, required human understanding. Once the method was trained, it could analyze these characteristics in new paintings and accurately predict which works a person would like.
(1)、What do the cases in Paragraph I mainly indicate?A、The differences in people's appreciation of beauty. B、The characteristics of different artists. C、The importance of facial appearances. D、The value of different works of art.(2)、Which of the following ideas may Anjan Chatterjee support?A、People's preference is mainly rooted in biology. B、Art works have fewer arbitrary things to value. C、Researchers' art preference is different from others'. D、People usually share common feelings towards scenery.(3)、Which of the following factors was taken into account during the study?A、The identity of the participants. B、The wide range of paintings. C、The background of the paintings. D、The national origin of the participants.(4)、What's the last paragraph mainly about?A、The process of the study. B、The researchers' different viewpoints. C、The findings of the study. D、The researchers' prediction for related research.
