17、It wasn't easy to practice gratitude (感激) every day. After I1 Cushing's disease and had an operation a few years ago, my2 was that everything would be OK. However, I was wrong. I had ongoing aches and pains, and3 myself to a new life was difficult for me. I began to notice that I'd become a4 person.
One day, I heard a discussion about gratitude by Dr Tony Evans. It5 me and forced me to take a long, hard, honest look at myself. I have a (n)6 spouse (配偶) and parents. I'd heard the stories of other people's struggles with Cushing's disease. Their spouses had left them and they didn't have family to7. I didn't face any of these problems, yet I didn't realize that.
I made a decision to start practicing gratitude daily. Once I decided that, my8 improved, and I began to approach situations9. Instead of viewing situations negatively, I started to see them as10.
This led me to practice the concept of sowing and reaping (收获), which I learned from my parents. They didn't just talk the talk, but rather they11 this concept to us.12, it wasn't until I had my own experiences that I understood what it meant.
Let me explain. When I was13 by my own pity, my harvest in life was ruined, because everything I was14 was negative. Since I started practicing gratitude, so many different doors of opportunity have opened up for me.
My advice is starting practicing gratitude until it becomes a part of your daily15. Take note of the difference it will make in your life.

18、Food Safety Is Crucial: How Should We Respond?
With the rapid growth of online media, China's increasingly serious food safety issues are coming to light more often. These include incidents like the production and sale of toxic milk powder, recycled cooking oil making its way back to dining tables, and falsified ingredient labels.
● It's crucial to know where your food comes from and how it's prepared. Research the sources of your groceries, whether it's local farms or imported goods. Read labels, check for certifications, and stay updated on any food recalls. Awareness is your first line of defense.
●Support local and transparent producers. Instead of choosing for mass-produced, processed foods, consider supporting local farmers and markets where you can trace the source of your food. Local businesses often prioritize quality over quantity.
● Eat more at home. Obviously, it's hard to monitor the hygiene standards and food sources in restaurants. You can base your meals around minimally processed, wholesome ingredients to ensure both safety and nutrition, which is absolutely beneficial to your health.
● Practice smart hygiene at home. You play a role in ensuring food safety once it enters your kitchen. Always wash your hands before handling food, clean your kitchen surfaces regularly, and cook meats to safe temperatures.
A. Be Informed.
B. Be prepared.
C. So, how can we ensure that the food we consume is safe?
D. In this way, you are able to have fresher and safer options.
E. Preparing meals yourself allows you to avoid unnecessary additives.
F. Simple actions can make a significant difference in preventing food-borne illnesses.
G. Then, how should we deal with businesses selling bad food?

19、A newly engineered type of soil can draw water out of thin air to provide plants with water and manage controlled release of fertilizer (肥料) for a constant supply of nutrients.
Supporting this exciting smart soil system is a hydrogel (水凝胶) material. In experiments, the soil containing hydrogel led to the growth of larger, healthier plants, compared to regular soil, all while using less water and fertilizer. The technology is also universal enough to be adopted across a wide range of climates, from dry regions to temperate areas.
Agriculture today accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals and up to 95% in some developing countries as our global population continues to rise. The U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) emphasizes the importance of improving irrigation (灌溉) efficiency, adopting water-saving technologies and promoting crops with lower water footprints to ensure sustainable food production and water resource management.
Meanwhile, traditional farming methods, especially irrigation and fertilizing, face significant difficulties. As climate change intensifies and water resources become increasingly rare, the need for more efficient and sustainable irrigation practices has never been more urgent. Additionally, conventional fertilization techniques often result in too much nutrient exposure, reducing nutrient uptake efficiency and causing environmental pollution, and farmable land degradation.
"The lack of water coupled with a growing population has an immediate impact on food security," said Yu, professor of Materials Science in the Cockrell School. "This new class of hydrogels offers a solution to meet the pressing needs of water and efficient nutrient uptake in modern sustainable agriculture."
In experiments, plants rooted in the hydrogel soil saw a 138% increase in crop length compared to a control group in regular soil. And the improved soil can achieve 40% water savings, significantly reducing the need for frequent irrigation and ensuring strong crop development.
This research builds on previous discoveries involving hydrogels that can pull water from the atmosphere and make farming more efficient. The project will continue, and the researchers' next moves involve integrating different types of fertilizers and longer field tests.
(1)、What is special about the smart soil?A、It provides air to regular soil. B、It can absorb water from the air. C、It creates fertilizer with air. D、It can be used all over the world.(2)、What is a challenge traditional farming methods face?A、The shortage of fertilizer. B、The lack of qualified seeds. C、The decrease of labor force. D、The inefficient irrigation methods.(3)、What does Professor Yu think of the new system?A、It is impractical. B、It is simple. C、It is time-consuming. D、It is far-reaching.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Smart Soil Can Water and Feed Itself B、Hydrogel Will Take the Place of Soil C、Modern Agriculture Is Facing Drought D、Smart Soil Is Approved for Promotion -
