  • 1、We all have to make decisions all the time, and we have many choices, ranging from tiny issues to important ones. That means the skill of good decision-making counts a lot. If you would like to improve your skill of decision making, here are four suggestions for you.

Don't expect to have it all.

Decisions force you to close the door on other possibilities. And there will be paths not taken, careers not chosen, to name a few. You can imagine some "what if" situations if you must, but do not let them take up too much space in your brain.

It's often good to think through your decisions. But don't overdo it. Research can reach a point where returns begin to reduce, which makes it confusing more than clear. Many good decisions can be made based as much on intuition (直觉) as on careful analysis of endless data.

    Don't delay making decisions.

Yes, there is a time to put off making a decision. Perhaps you need more information. Or it's likely that you wait for a less stressful time. Just don't wait so long that the decision is made by your own indecisiveness (犹豫不决).

    Don't be hard on yourself.

You decide to go on a voyage. You choose an expensive liner (邮轮). Everything should work out just right. Only you didn't expect an insect that ran around on the ship, making you and your family sick for five days. But please remember it is unavoidable sometimes.

    A. Don't spend too much time thinking.

    B. Don't rely on emotion to make decisions.

    C. It is an important source of information.

    D. You may regret making such a stupid decision.

    E. You can't order every delicious dish on the menu.

    F. Maybe you wish to turn to your parents for advice.

    G. Unfortunately, people often find it hard to make decisions.

  • 2、A new study suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.

After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.

They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn't. Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students' capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.

Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock. Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.

At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practice self-control. And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn't see the same benefits.

The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students' attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.

(1)、What was the purpose of the study?
A、To examine the techniques for practicing mindfulness. B、To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students. C、To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests. D、To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.
    (2)、How was the study conducted?
A、By listing benefits of mindfulness education. B、By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions. C、By teaching different students different mindfulness skills. D、By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.
(3)、What change took place after the students practiced mindfulness work?
A、They felt easier to stay focused. B、They were better at computer coding. C、Their mind was wandering more actively. D、Their brains were more aware of negativity.
(4)、Who are the most possible target readers of the passage?
    A、Stressful parents. B、Mindful instructors. C、Emotional students. D、School educators.

In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship with 48 passengers she'd never met before, to begin the journey towards Antarctica. "From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has," Ginni says. "I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater."

It was a beautiful sunny day when the moving van pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture.

Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it - even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes scattered on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain.

The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.

He went to inspect (检查) and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. "We can have someone fix it," Mindy said. "I'll grab a bucket to catch the water for now."

A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.

"Don't worry. We can take care of that!" Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. "Let's go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better."

Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay.

"What do we do now?" Mindy asked.

Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise. There was a knock at the door.

Tai Chi is often described as "mediation in motion". There is (grow) evidence that this mind-body practice which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.

the fact that Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn't leave you breathless, it deals with the key components of (fit)— muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Tai Chi improves balance and, according to some studies, (reduce) falls. Proprioception (本体感受) — the ability (sense) the position of one' s body in space — declines with age. Tai Chi helps train this sense and also (great) improves muscle strength and flexibility, which makes easier to recover from a stumble (绊倒). Fear of falling can make you more likely to fall. Some studies have found that Tai Chi training helps relieve that fear.

Tai Chi is very safe, and no fancy equipment (need), so it's easy to get started. Don't be frightened by the names. Names like Yang, Wu, and Cheng are given to different (branch) of Tai Chi, in honor of people who designed the sets of movements called forms. In some forms, you learn a series of movements, while others focus more on breathing and meditation. Finding the very approach matches your interests and needs is the key.

You don't need to seize every single opportunity to be funny. If you're in the middle of a bad joke, just end it. • 19、An unlikely scandal (丑闻) affected the British government greatly. After Covid-19 forced the government to cancel the "A - level" exams that help determine university admission, the British education regulator used an algorithm (算法) to predict what score each student would have received on their exam.

The algorithm relied in part on how the school's students had historically been more successful on the exam. Schools with richer children tended to have better track records, so the algorithm gave wealthy students - even those on track for the same grades as poor students - much higher predicted scores. High-achieving, low - income pupils whose schools had not previously performed well were hit particularly hard. After threats of legal action and widespread demonstrations, the government backed down and canceled the algorithmic grading process entirely. This wasn't an isolated incident: In the United States similar issues troubled the International Baccalaureate exam, which used an opaque (不透明)   artificial intelligence system to set students' scores, prompting protests from thousands of students and parents.

These episodes highlight some of the traps of algorithmic decision - making. As technology advances, companies, governments, and other organizations are increasingly relying on algorithms to predict important social outcomes, using them to distribute jobs, forecast crime, and even try to prevent child abuse. These technologies promise to increase efficiency, enable more targeted policy interventions, and remove human imperfections from decision-making processes. But critics worry that opaque machine learning systems will in fact reflect and further keep shortcomings in how organizations typically function - including by establishing the racial, class, and gender prejudices of the societies that develop these systems.

But there is an even more basic concern about algorithmic decision-making. Even in the absence of systematic class or racial prejudice, what if algorithms struggle to make even remotely accurate predictions about the track of individuals' lives?

(1)、Why did the author mention A-level exams in the first paragraph?
A、To share a scandal. B、To present an example. C、To introduce the topic. D、To arouse public concern.
(2)、Who are probably in favor of the algorithmic grading system?
A、Average students from top schools. B、Straight A students from top schools. C、Average students from average families. D、Straight A students with disadvantaged background.
(3)、What can we infer from the passage?
A、The algorithmic grading system resulted in legal action. B、Algorithmic decision-making is not necessarily reliable. C、Algorithmic decision-making develops systematic prejudices D、The British government approves of the algorithmic grading system.
  • 20、The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis I launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.

And then what? What's the next great leap in humans' quest for the secrets of the universe? When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.

First off there's Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise (天堂), with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere. Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.

At the other end are the gas giants. Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water. NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.

As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi - permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on. Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.

Over the coming decades humans expect to see a rise of "space hotels", set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it's the next easiest thing to accomplish... after the Moon and Mars, of course.

(1)、What does the underlined word "quest" probably mean in the second paragraph?
    A、Question. B、Explanation. C、Request. D、Search.
(2)、Which is the least likely to be explored in the next decades according to the passage?
    A、Mars. B、Mercury. C、Venus. D、Gas giants.
(3)、What's the author's attitude towards the "space hotels"?
    A、Ambiguous. B、Critical. C、Hopeful. D、Indifferent.
    (4)、What's the passage mainly about?
A、The launch of Artemis I. B、The secrets of the solar system. C、The missions of NASA. D、The areas of the future universe exploration.
