1、For better eyesight (视力), doctors advise limiting (限制) the hours of screen time and encourage having enough eye resting time.
However, another study shows that sitting in front of computer or TV screens for long hours is not the only reason for myopia (近视). With the aim of figuring out the secret behind it, an Australian research team studied young children in Sydney and Singapore. The research team found that there were fewer children who had myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore, even though they spent more time in front of computer and TV screens. The major finding is that children in Sydney spend longer hours on outdoor sports than those in Singapore.
Indoor and outdoor sports both make the eyes pay attention to more distant (远处的) objects, which stops the eyes from changing original shape. But outdoor sports may be better than indoor sports for myopia. Because natural light is good for eye growth and vitamin (维他命) D from the sunlight might be useful to it. Many doctors suggest that every child get its first eye test when he/she is about two and a half years old, and even if his/her sight seems good enough. It is necessary for myopic (近视的) children to wear glasses to stop headaches, trouble reading and so on. It is also important that schools invite doctors to test their students' eyes.
If that is not possible, school teachers should at least encourage parents and children to have regular eye examinations and wear glasses. And parents should remember not only to limit the total screen time for their children, but also to encourage them to spend time outdoors.
(1)、What did the Australian research team study for?A、To find the reasons for myopia. B、To find the ways to treat myopia. C、To learn to choose right glasses. D、To improve children's eyesight.(2)、Why are there fewer children with myopia in Sydney than those in Singapore?A、Because the children in Sydney watch TV less. B、Because the children in Sydney have more eye resting time. C、Because the children in Sydney use computer less. D、Because the children in Sydney do more outdoor sports.(3)、What conclusion can we draw from the passage?A、Sydney children don't study hard. B、Singapore children do less exercise. C、Room light does harm to children's eyes. D、Outdoor light may help slow myopia progression.(4)、Which of the following is TRUE?A、Children should have eye tests as soon as they reach school age. B、Looking more at distant objects can help the eyes keep their original shape. C、Doing outdoor sports with no glasses is good for myopic children. D、Children should limit their time in the sun to protect their eyes. -
2、 Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety.
He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However, in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. "Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses," Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter.
In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei's effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organization, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. "When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall," Liu says. "It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall."
Mei's hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined.
Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. "My biggest wish," Mei says, "is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it."
(1)、What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall?A、The dream of being a hero. B、The influence of his friends. C、Poor condition of the Great Wall. D、Encouragement from the villagers.(2)、What do the underlined words "picked up" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Recognized. B、Finished. C、Managed. 4、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a hot day in New York City. I had brunch with a friend and picked up my new glasses. All done and headed back on the train. I wanted to yell at a couple of people for their rude behavior, but wisely just sat quietly.
An old black gentleman entered the far end of the train car. In worn but neat clothes, he tipped his faded cap and greeted everyone with a warm "Good afternoon, folks." Most ignored him, with cold blank faces. Then, he started to sing. I didn't turn my head, but I felt a smile in my soul. Many people ask for money on the train, but I always feel happy when someone offers music instead. It feels like a gift.
I let the notes settle in for a second before my eyes wandered. A young boy across from me, maybe ten, watched him, swaying (摇摆) to the rhythm, his mother too distracted by her phone to notice.
He started his second song and my heart did a happy dance. "Lean on me, when you're not strong. I'll be your friend..." I love that song! Without thinking, I softly sang a little harmony with him. Right away, I decided he could have the $5 bill in my purse.
He looked tall and thin, but he had a strong voice and kind energy. Life had clearly been hard for him, but he still stood tall and carried himself with quiet dignity.
I rolled the bill tightly and waited for him to make his way to me. He held the overhead bar to steady himself as he inched down the car, pausing briefly beside each seat like he was waiting for a sign — though no one glanced up. No one was making any moves to give him coins or reach for their wallet.

18、Dealing with Appearance Anxiety
Appearance anxiety means worrying too much about how you look, which is especially common among teenagers. For example, spending hours checking carefully edited selfies on social media or comparing your appearance with others often leads to negative thoughts. Such constant worries not only damage self-confidence but may also lead to avoiding social situations like school events or group activities.
Fortunately, there are ways to handle these feelings.
The first step is to practice kindness toward yourself. Instead of thinking "My hair looks messy," try saying "My hair protects me from the sun." Also, writing down three things your body helps you do daily (like "My arms let me hug my friends") also builds lasting confidence.
Creative activities and sports offer healthy ways to shift focus. Also, team sports like basketball teach players to value skills over appearance, with 72% of players claiming teamwork makes them value ability over appearance. Even easy activities like walking can calm your mind by producing stress-relieving chemicals.
Choose friends who avoid comments on looks and join school clubs that welcome everyone. Adults like teachers can teach helpful tricks, like using apps to record feelings or ways to stay positive. Cutting down time on apps that make you compare yourself is another smart move.
Remember, true beauty isn't about being perfect physically. When we care more about being kind and brave than looking a certain way, we start seeing real beauty in who people are, not just how they appear.
A. Limit your Internet exposure.
B. Turn to trusted people for help.
C. Social comparison is the major cause.
D. Regular exercise improves physical health.
E. Such changes boost how you view yourself.
F. It is about the special things that make you "you".
G. Painting helps focus on creativity rather than looks.

19、Urban mobility is at a crossroads. For decades, cities have been designed to cater to cars, with countless roads, plenty of parking, and laws that separate residential areas from commercial and industrial zones. This has made cities less livable, increasingly polluted, and contributed to social inequality. But now, a new vision for urban mobility is emerging, one that prioritizes people over vehicles, reduces carbon emissions, and enhances the quality of urban life.
At the heart of this transformation are technological innovations that are reshaping how people move within cities. Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more affordable and accessible. Autonomous vehicles, though still in their early stage, hold the promise of reducing traffic accidents and jams by enabling more efficient use of road space. And shared mobility services, such as bike and car-sharing, are making it easier for people to get around without owning a personal vehicle.
The shift towards more sustainable urban mobility is also being driven by a change in consumer preferences. Younger generations, in particular, are less attached to the idea of car ownership and more open to alternative modes of transportation. It is being fueled by concerns about climate change and air pollution, as well as the increasing cost of owning and maintaining a car in urban areas. As a result, cities are seeing a growing demand for green transportation options.
However, the transition to a more sustainable and intelligent urban mobility system is not as easy as expected. One major challenge is the need for significant investment in new infrastructure (基础设施), such as charging stations. Additionally, ensuring the fair distribution of these benefits across different economic groups is crucial, which helps to prevent widening social gaps. What's more, the success of urban mobility innovations depends on public acceptance and trust. Overcoming these challenges will require joint efforts from governments, private sectors, and communities.
In conclusion, the future of urban mobility is set to experience significant transformations. As cities continue to grow and evolve, embracing these changes will be crucial in shaping the urban landscape of tomorrow.

20、With its rolling hills, dramatic waterfalls, and rich woodlands, the Durham Dales in England provides a natural habitat for birds—and it's also home to zoologist and artist Sara Cox. Surrounded by nature since childhood, she has always been passionate about birds. Today, she creates detailed bird sculptures made from fine metal wire, combining scientific knowledge with artistic creativity to raise awareness about the challenges facing bird populations and to inspire people to care for them.
As a child, Sara spent much of her time outdoors with her brothers—exploring the garden or walking in the countryside. These early experiences helped her develop a deep appreciation for the natural world. At the same time, creativity was a strong presence in her home; her father, an engineer, enjoyed welding (焊接) and building, while her mother made pottery in her spare time. Their hands-on skills and artistic sensibility gave Sara both technical and creative foundations. Later, when she moved to Mickleton 20 years ago, the surrounding wildlife became a powerful source of inspiration. Observing birds up close in their natural habitat helped her find her own artistic voice and connect her love of nature with sculpture.
Sara's wire bird sculptures are the result of careful observation and detailed study. She will sit outside for hours, sketching and observing the birds' movements—right down to how their muscles work and how they shift their weight. She also visits museums to study bird skeletons (骨架) so she can understand the structure beneath the feathers. "To sculpt a bird accurately, I need to know what's underneath," she explains.
Her sculptures have been shown in national exhibitions, including one held by the Royal Society of British Artists in London. They can also be seen along nature trails (小径), such as at the Durham Wildlife Trust's Low Barns reserve. Whether displayed in galleries or out in the wild, her work has been praised by museums, galleries, and wildlife trusts alike for its scientific accuracy, emotional impact, and ability to encourage greater appreciation for bird species.
