1、Many people enjoy collecting beach items like pretty shells or sand dollars. For John Anderson from US, beach-combing (海滩寻宝) has become much more than just a(n)1. His home is filled with2 finds, including ancient fossils (化石) and curious objects collected over decades. Every summer, he opens his own museum to3 these wonders with visitors.
He became4 the idea of picking up beach items back when he was just 22. One day, Anderson5 a glass float (捕鱼浮标), which was no longer produced after the mi-20th century. It was amazing that it had6 countless waves and did not get broken. That experience sparked a deep love for exploring the shoreline and hunting for hidden7
Now, his finds cover many periods of8 One of Anderson's favorite finds is an unusual prehistoric fossilized mammoth tooth. His collection also9 sports shoes from the 1990 "Great Shoe Spill", when thousands of Nike shoes were washed ashore, and items from the 2011 Japan tsunami carried across the Pacific. His book of10 pulled from bottles led to a few touching moments of rediscovery across time. One letter was surprisingly11 by an elderly visitor, who pointed out that it was the one she had thrown into the sea as a little girl.
From uncommon finds to everyday objects, his collection12 a wonderful world under the waves, filled with many13 stories. These beach treasures are14 of the ocean's power, inspiring visitors to stay15 and uncover the wonders of nature.

2、A lot of kids and adults say they get nervous during social situations. Maybe it's speaking up in class or making a phone call or just trying something new. You might feel butterflies in your stomach, or your heart may beat faster or you get suddenly anxious. And if fear of being embarrassed or making a mistake is getting in your way, there are some things you can try on your own to help.
Experts agree that avoiding situations that make us anxious can actually make things worse in the long run. Getting out of something you don't want to do might make you feel better in the moment, but you will still feel anxious the next time you're asked to do it.
Push yourself.
While leaving your comfort zone isn't easy, it can be very good for you. That's because anxiety tends to go away when you start doing the things that make you anxious. So try to face your anxiety and fear and see what happens. You might find you have the skills to deal with it.
Practice a lot.
As an experiment, try doing something that makes you nervous.Whatever you do, you'll find that it gets easier over time. That's because by practicing the things that make you nervous you are actually improving your ability to easily handle them.
Relax yourself.
Don't try to relax by watching television or visiting a website. For example, doing things like yoga can also help you stay calm.
A. Being nervous is uncommon
B. Don't avoid something.
C. Pay no attention to your thoughts.
D. Those things are your body's reaction(反应) to fear.
E. Start with practising little things like answering questions in class.
F. Try a deep relaxation that has a physical effect on the mind.
G. And next time you're in that situation you might feel less nervous.

3、Oleg Kononenko has become the first human to achieve 1,000 days of spaceflight over a 16-year career visiting and living on the International Space Station (ISS). The achievement comes on his fifth flight to space and during his third term as the commander of the ISS. He will become one of the most valuable human biology specimens (生物标本) in the world.
Given that both the Artemis Accords and the International Lunar Research Station initiative (倡议) aim to send men and women on longer and longer missions to space, including semi-permanent (半永久的) habitation of the moon and eventually a journey to Mars, scientists need to understand what long-term presence in outer space will do to the human body.
To that end, Kononenko, who has routinely spent many hundreds of continuous days and even years in low-Earth orbit, will be providing data points "days, months and years," after his return, says Emmanuel Urquieta, the former chief medical officer of the NASA-funded Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH), led by Baylor College of Medicine.
Urquieta explains that medicine in space is a growing field, and that the effects of the space environment on eye health, bone loss, and blood flow are not well understood, nor are the impacts of long-term radiation exposure (辐射暴露) and space sickness.
"I'm sure that there will be a lot of research coming up in the future when he comes back to Earth and I'm sure that there will be a very long follow-up with him, you know, days, months, and years after, to try really to understand these very unique data points," Urquieta says.
"When you project the data that we have from six-month missions to 900 days, there's still a huge gap of data that we need to address so that we can safely say that, ‘OK, we have enough data that we can confidently say that we're able to send someone to Mars and make sure that that person is going to come back as healthy as he or she left Earth.'"
(1)、What do we know about Kononenko?A、He contributed to the establishment of the ISS. B、He discovered a valuable biology specimen. C、He set a record for the most time in space. D、He completed three space flights in 16 years.(2)、What do the underlined words "To that end" in paragraph 3 refer to?A、To improve life support systems in space. B、To explore the potential for lunar habitation. C、To select astronauts for a journey to Mars. D、To study the effects of living in space.(3)、What can be concluded about Kononenko from the last two paragraphs?A、His long-term data will be crucial. B、He will conduct new space missions. C、He will inspire confidence in others. D、His career will be fruitful.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Increased Focuses on Spaceflight Safety Concerns B、New Opportunities for Space Health Studies C、Future Possibilities for Space Travel D、Big Challenges in Space Exploration -
4、Randall Munroe, who used to work on robots at NASA, explains science in a fun and easy- to-understand way in his book What If? Once you get used to his unique writing style, you can go on many amazing trips with him and learn while laughing.
And you will certainly learn. There is a sort of joy in getting real answers to the strange questions Munroe is sent every day. However unusual the topics are, Randall takes them seriously. For example, if you set a meat-eating dinosaur (恐龙) free in New York City, how many humans would it have to eat to meet its need each day? Munroe thinks New York could support about 350 dinosaurs. That's good to know, but we hope we don't need to use this information.
The book's cover is a full-size picture of what the Earth would look like if the oceans were removed. The back has some interesting facts you might want to know before buying it (eating the book would give you about 2,300 calories (卡路里) if you could take in paper). Thanks, Randall!
Although Munroe knows a lot and can perfectly explain the science behind the questions, What If? is not a textbook. When asked what would happen when you threw a baseball at light-speed, he says there would be a shockwave expanding (膨胀) outwards, and quickly moves on. He is answering the question after all, but if you are looking for detailed classroom- style descriptions of what Munroe is talking about, you're out of luck.
But that's what makes it great. What If? is light enough to attract you, but deep enough to make you curious about science one chapter at a time. If you're willing to go along with Munroe's ideas and guesses, you're in for an exciting journey of the mind.
(1)、What can be found in the book What If?A、Stories of fun journeys. B、Pictures of the oceans. C、Latest scientific experiments. D、Discussions of unreal situations.(2)、How does Munroe deal with the questions in his book?A、He offers direct answers. B、He pays no attention. C、He recommends textbooks. D、He digs into many possibilities.(3)、What is Munroe's writing style like?A、Formal and detailed. B、Light but confusing. C、Humorous and educational. D、Imaginative but unclear.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A、What If?: A Collection of Funny Science Jokes B、What If?: A Scientific Adventure with Munroe C、What If?: A Guidebook on Healthy Eating Habits D、What If?: A Question-based Book about Life -
5、In Katmai National. Park, a mother bear and her cub walk toward us, then sit down and nap, completely at ease with us being around. And the feeling is shared. My husband, nervous about being near such large predators (捕食者) an hour ago, now relaxes so much that he falls asleep in the grass too.
The Katmai coast can only be reached by air or sea. Its faraway location helps keep bear viewing safe. Our guide, Bachrach, tells us that the common view of bears as violent predators killing for meat actually only shows part of the picture. The Katmai spring sees bears feast on plants and dig for shellfish during low tide. From late June to September, they move to salmon-filled rivers for the salmon, but they also keep eating grass and berries.
Each time we spot a bear, Bachrach reminds us to read its behavior. If the bear appears relaxed, we can watch for a while from a safe distance. As responsible visitors, we must never let it get too close, and never let even a bit of our food fall to the ground. Bachrach learned this the hard way after a bear entered a cabin and stayed near the door for days, expecting more after finding fruit. Besides, we must also avoid disturbing the bears while they feed. As they drink along the river, we carefully move around them.
"What do you think people get out of seeing bears?" I ask Bachrach.
"I've watched visitors go from hesitant to amazed, then comfortable, and then observant and thoughtful. Hopefully they learn to share space with wild animals. Those who don't learn to share don't grow alongside each other. And those who share, do," he says.
(1)、Why does the husband fall asleep?A、He is uninterested in bears. B、He doesn't want to disturb the bears. C、He enjoys the author's company. D、He feels safe in the environment.(2)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、Bears' attacking behavior. B、Katmai's faraway location. C、Bears' different diets. D、Katmai's changing seasons.(3)、What should a responsible bear visitor do?A、Follow bears closely. B、Share food with bears. C、Talk to bears. D、Watch bears only.(4)、What does Bachrach hope people learn from bear viewing?A、To live in peace with wildlife. B、To survive in the wild. C、To increase space for wildlife. D、To look after bears thoughtfully. -
6、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seventeen, I stayed with my little brother Cheng alone for the first time. Our parents hurried to another city to take care of my grandma, who had a serious illness, and left eight-year-old Cheng with me. Before they left, they gave me the keys and some money.
Everything was fine. In the evening, Cheng was at the dining table, drawing a face on an egg for a school project. I helped him sharpen his pencils, and he suddenly asked, "Brother, what if the egg breaks?" I replied, "Then just draw another one." As soon as I said that, the egg rolled off the table and broke. Cheng started to cry. I picked up the broken pieces and gave him the last egg from the fridge, saying, "Don't cry. Let's draw it together."
To cheer him up, I suggested we make a "capsule" for the new egg. We gathered old boxes and colored paper. We stuffed cotton inside the box. Cheng decorated it with silver paper while I colored the cotton blue to make it look like the night sky. After an hour, we had a shiny capsule, and Cheng gently placed the egg inside.
Dinner was simple — tomato and egg noodles. Cheng insisted on placing the capsule in the middle of the table with an empty bowl for it. I pretended to pour some soup into the bowl for the egg. Cheng ate with sauce all over his face and whispered, "Brother, what if Grandma's illness is serious?" I comforted him, "Everything will be fine." He nodded, tears rolling down his cheeks.
At 8:00 pm, I told Cheng to take a bath. In the bathroom, I washed his hair, and he suddenly wiped the water from my forehead, saying, "Brother, you seem like an adult." My heart felt warm. "I'll cook breakfast for us tomorrow morning," he continued. "After the breakfast, I want to speak to Grandma."

11、Microplastics (tiny, microscopic bits of plastic) have been found almost everywhere researchers look, including the human body. Microplastics and their even tinier cousins, nanoplastics, are probably flowing through your blood and building up in your organs (器官) like the lungs and liver. Now, a new study is linking microplastics to increased heart attack and stroke risk.
"There are some microplastics in normal, healthy arteries (动脉)," said Dr Ross Clark, a researcher who led the study. "But the amount there is really, really different when they become diseased with symptoms."
Clark and his team measured microplastics and nanoplastics in the dangerous, fatty plaque that can build up in arteries, block blood flow, and cause strokes or heart attacks. Compared to the walls of healthy plaque-free arteries, plaque buildup had 16 times more microplastics — just in the people who didn't have symptoms. In people who had experienced stroke, mini-stroke, or vision loss, the plaque had 51 times more microplastics.
Previous research had found that people with microplastics in their arterial plaque were more likely to have a heart attack or die. To investigate why, Clark studied samples (样本) from 48 people's carotid arteries, the pair of superhighways in your neck that channel blood to your brain. The difference in the number of microplastics surprised him, but his team found another concerning trend, too. Cells in the plaque with lots of microplastics showed different gene activity from those with low microplastics.
In the high-plastic environment, one group of immune cells had switched off a gene that's associated with turning off inflammation (炎症). Clark's team also found genetic differences in a group of stem cells thought to help prevent heart attacks and strokes by reducing inflammation and stabilizing plaque.
"Could it be that microplastics are somehow changing their gene expression?" Clark said. "There's more research needed to fully establish that, but at least it gives us a hint as to where to look."
(1)、How might people feel about microplastics linked to disease?A、Indifferent. B、Concerned. C、Optimistic. D、Confused.(2)、What does Clark's comparison of microplastic levels show?A、Microplastics in healthy arteries are fatal. B、Healthy arteries contain no microplastics. C、Microplastic levels are related to arterial health. D、Nanoplastics aren't present in diseased arteries.(3)、What does the study suggest about microplastics' potential effect?A、They reduce the risk of strokes. B、They are beneficial to turning off inflammation. C、They directly block blood flow to the brain. D、They may affect gene expression in immune cells.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、The Dangers of Using Plastics B、Microplastics and Health Risk C、Medical Research on Human Organs D、Microplastics Found in Human bodies -
12、Researchers have some new evidence about what makes birds make so much noise early in the morning, and it's not for some of the reasons they previously thought. For decades, a popular theory about why birds sing at dawn — called the dawn chorus (合唱) — has been that they can be heard farther and more clearly at that time. Sound travels faster in humid (温暖潮湿的) air and it's more humid early in the morning. It's less windy, too, which is thought to lessen any distortion (失真) of their sounds.
But scientists in India studied audio (声音的) recordings of birds in the rainforest. They said they didn't find proof to support this idea about sound traveling better. It was one of the ideas about environmental factors. Another idea is that birds sing at dawn because it's too dark to look for food.
"We didn't find much support for some of these environmental reasons suggested in past studies for birds singing more at dawn," said Vijay Ramesh, a researcher at Cornell University.
The researchers didn't find one clear reason why the dawn chorus happens, but they found some support for the ideas that the early morning noise is about birds marking their territory after being inactive at night and talking about finding food.
The team analyzed recordings from audio recorders placed at 43 locations in the Western Ghats mountain range in southern India, which is known as a biodiversity hotspot. They examined sounds of what they determined were 69 different species of birds. They studied recordings from the hours around dawn and the hours around dusk to compare activities.
Unsurprisingly to anyone who's been roused by bird calls, the vast majority of species they studied had significantly higher vocal activities at dawn compared to dusk.
(1)、Why did Indian scientists conduct research on birds in the rainforest?A、To record the sounds of rare bird species. B、To prove sound travels faster in humid air. C、To explore the reasons for birds' dawn chorus. D、To find out the best time for the dawn chorus.(2)、What can be inferred from the findings of the study?A、Birds' dawn singing may serve social functions. B、The old theory about dawn chorus is true. C、Birds are less active at dusk due to light. D、All birds sing to mark territory at dawn.(3)、What was the researchers' approach in the study?A、They observed birds' feeding habits in the morning. B、They conducted experiments in a laboratory setting. C、They tracked birds' movements in different countries. D、They analyzed audio recordings from tens of locations.(4)、What does the underlined word "roused" in the last paragraph mean?A、Reminded. B、Waken up. C、Threatened. D、Stirred up. -
13、28-year-old Ren makes handcrafted wooden plaques (匾牌) and sells them to customers in the United States, Singapore, and other countries. Surrounded by piles of wood waiting to be reused, Ren turns rough pine and beech into custom wooden signs for restaurants, unique homestays, and campgrounds.
After graduating in 2017 and stepping into the highly competitive online clothing industry, Ren realized he needed to find a specialized market. His solution: custom wooden plaques. He founded a company in 2022. "Each piece is tailor-made. It's nearly impossible to find the same product on the market," Ren explained. "The price per order attracts quality customers who place large orders."
Last year, his craft earned him over $688,000 — a success he owed to his much attention to detail and commitment to perfection. "We work with over 10 different types of wood. Every step, from design and cutting to carving, coloring and painting, is crucial," he said.
International orders began with a midnight message from an American client two years ago. After producing five design variants, Ren waited by his screen for hours without receiving any feedback. "I later realized it was simply the time difference," he recalled.
Another memorable project was for an American restaurant owner who initially requested four window-like plaques, each about 1.2 meters in diameter. After presenting several design drafts that showcased traditional techniques and craftsmanship, the impressed client increased the order to six pieces. "The owner went on to refer several other American customers to me," said Ren.
He believes that in the custom business, long-term relationships are key — each satisfied customer becomes a brand ambassador. Ren's small but dedicated (专心致志的) team of eight continues to breathe life into wood, with his plaques now decorating numerous businesses abroad.
(1)、Why did Ren choose to enter the custom wooden plaque business?A、To avoid the competition in the previous field. B、To spread wooden plaques abroad. C、To teach traditional woodworking. D、To enjoy different types of wood.(2)、What is the key to Ren's success in his business?A、The unique design software he uses. B、His ability to speak multiple languages. C、His focus on detail and pursuit of perfection. D、The large number of employees in his company.(3)、Why did the restaurant owner raise the order to six plaques?A、He enjoyed the design for the plaques. B、He was impressed by Ren's sincerity. C、He was persuaded by other clients. D、He got a discount from Ren.(4)、What does Ren think is the most important in the custom business?A、Offering the lowest price to customers. B、Producing products as quickly as possible. C、Using the most expensive wood materials. D、Building lasting relationships with customers. -
14、Getting students interested and active helps them do their best in class. It's important to use different fun activities to keep everyone learning.
Playing Guess Who
Learning who is who from history can get confusing so use this teaching strategy to help. Put those problem- solving skills to good use in history class (or others). Describe a time, place, or person from history with only three clues. The entire class has to try to figure out who or what you are referring to, then race to the whiteboard to write the answer.
Writing a Journal
Develop creative writing skills by asking each student to write a journal from someone else's viewpoint. There are many famous diarists who provide key insight into life through history. You could ask students to give a different diary and then ask them to read it in front of the class.
Brainstorming
Group brainstorming sessions are a great way to bring your students together to connect with whatever they are learning. Instead of thinking about the topic alone at their desk, they get to expand (详述) their ideas with other students in small groups. Use brainstorming worksheets for this activity idea.
Debating
Most students will have a view of what they're learning. Use this to your advantage and create a school activity of debating the pros or cons of whatever they are learning about. Get them to write down their main points on pieces of paper ahead so they can practice and be prepared for the debate. This can be done in front of the whole class and you can change the debaters each week.
(1)、How do students play Guess Who?A、They debate about historical figures in groups. B、They brainstorm historical timelines in small groups. C、They write a journal entry based on a historical figure. D、They identify historical people or events with known information.(2)、In which activity will the teacher ask students to read their works?A、Playing Guess Who. B、Writing a Journal. C、Brainstorming. D、Debating.(3)、What do students do during group brainstorming sessions?A、They debate the pros and cons of topics. B、They loudly tell others historical diaries. C、They explain their ideas to other students. D、They complete projects alone at their desks. -
