"There must be some mistakes. Don't worry and I'll help you contact the advisor." She grabbed the phone and dialed the Honor Society advisor. "Oh, honey, I'm sorry. I thought you were kidding," my mother said. However, from the phone, she was told no mistake was made, and the decisions were final.

It bothered me why I wasn't chosen. It was really hurting me because nearly all of my friends were chosen for the Honor Society. I seemed to become the worst one and I felt painful and sad.

Kenya  （know） for its wonderful beaches. Water sports activities such as diving and game fishing have attracted visitors from around the world.

Visitors can  （easy） spend a relaxing long holiday in any of these destinations. Maila Izi, a 22-year-old student, has been a fan of water sports since she was a child. Over the past years, she has been to several countries, such as France and Spain, to learn new skills including wave surfing. But she thinks Diani offers the  （good） water sports experiences of all.

"This is the first time I  （visit） but the sea is the most beautiful that I have ever seen," she said. "The sand beach is so wide, the water is so warm and I think it is the perfect place for kitesurfing. It's the most beautiful beach I have ever been on."

She went to Diani with her parents for a May holiday. Izi was determined  （learn）kitesurfing, a water activity that uses a kite and surfboard（冲浪板）. It is a relatively new sport  has gained increasing popularity. She signed up  a class that offered three hours of training, including  （fly） kites of different sizes.

Goodluck Shamala, the founder of a training institute in Diani, said kitesurfing, which used to be considered as  extreme sport, has in recent years become more popular among  （tourist）. Many come from countries as far as Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Practice greeting.

Suggest looking someone in the eye.

It can be hard for anyone, so this step takes a little extra time.  This can make it feel more like a game and can help them get more comfortable! If you notice your child staring at the ground while talking to someone, gently suggest they look up.  This can make them extra shy!

Say what they should do.

A "no" without any suggestion may leave your child feeling confused about what to do next.  This way they know what good behavior they should practice instead.

Always be kind, polite, and positive in front of your child. You are a positive example to learn from. Consider eating dinner as a family each night. This is a great place to practice polite conversation as well as dinner table manners in particular.

Researchers in Australia recently announced a new device（设备） that absorbs water from air to produce drinkable water. They said it can produce up to 1,000 liters of drinkable water a day, adding that it could be "lifesaving during drought or emergencies". What's more, unlike other water generators（造水机）, their invention works by heating air instead of cooling it.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle call the device the Hydro Harvester. The device absorbs water from the air. Solar energy or heat from other industrial processes can be used to produce hot and wet air. After heating, the air cools, producing water for drinking or watering crops.

The researchers say the device can produce enough drinking water each day for a small rural town of up to 400 people. It could also help farmers keep their crops alive during droughts. Researchers thought their device would be especially useful in Australia because its climate is dry.

More than 2 billion people around the world will benefit from the device. They are in a situation where they do not have access to high-quality water. The device is meant to help alleviatewater shortage and safety.

Studies of the technology will be done in several Australian communities this year. The World Economic Forum （WEF）, a nonprofit group based in Switzerland, says water shortage continues to be a problem worldwide. The WEF said getting water from the atmosphere is a "promising solution that can immediately generate drinkable water using moisture（水汽） in the air". However, the group warns that the technology is costly. It estimates that one mid-sized device could cost between $ 30,000 and $ 50,000. So the group is concerned whether it will be accepted by the public.

In San Francisco,a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39, which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock（码头） officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the region in 15 years.

"Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week," PIER 39 harbor master Sheil a Chandor told many different medias. "The increase in sea lions is usually a good sign of their strong population and healthy living environment," said Adam Ratner, Director of Conservation Engagement at the Marine Mammal（海洋哺乳动物） Center in Sausalito, California.

"California sea lions are sentinels（哨兵） of the ocean," Ratner said. Their population to some extent reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of California sea lions is clearly a good thing.

For nearly 35 years, the animals have been a star attraction for visitors. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just been repaired, but the ships had not yet been moved back. At that moment, the sea lions' unexpected arrival not only attracted fans but also created enemies. According to a website, some dock residents and workers were scared away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake.

The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. "The fact proves that this is really a good thing," he said. "This is just a proof of how we can truly work together and think about how we can share our coasts with marine mammals and other wildlife in a way that benefits all the parties involved."

A group of foreigners visited Weihai, a coastal city, to explore what the rising star in China's tourism market can offer.

Driven by social media and short video platforms, Weihai's tourism industry saw a huge growth, with the city of just 2.92 million residents welcoming over 59 million visits.

Their first stop is the Dongchu Island in Rongcheng, a county-level city in Weihai, where the scenery is characterized by the region's unique seaweed-roofed houses. "I've never seen a roof made of seaweed. I can't believe my eyes at the houses," said Nick Ive, a British editor.

The group then visited the Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch（海洋牧场）, a hot family-friendly tourist destination to experience marine farming. "Visiting Sanggou Bay Marine Ranch was a pleasant experience because I could see and experience firsthan d how the sea fishes are kept," said Desca Lydi Natalia, a journalist with Antara, Indonesia's national news agency. "This experience not only increased my understanding but also provided enjoyment, as I could directly eat clams（蛤蜊） freshly harvested from the sea. I even had the opportunity to feed the seagulls."

Sanggo u Bay Marine Ranch receives about 80,000 visitors every year since it was established in 2015. Visiting the marine ranch has become one of the must-dos in Weihai.

Desca said that her favorite experience was living in a homestay in Weihai. "While staying in a hotel is comfortable, a homestay offers a different experience, especially since the yard is large and full of flowers, making it feel like home. So I chose a homestay,"said the Indonesian journalist. The homestay Desca chose is just a stone's throw away from the beach. Desca said that her country is a maritime country and also has many homestays. "So when I stayed in the homestay, the atmosphere reminded me of Indonesia," she added.

When I was a boy, I always wore turtleneck shirts because I was so sensitive and shy. I worked hard to earn exceptional marks and always tried to behave well. I was younger than everyone else because my good marks had allowed me to skip second grade, but this added nothing to my already low self-confidence.

When I was 14, my parents divorced (离婚). I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊) and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated and alone.

One day, my aunt called. This seemed like a miracle to me. Aunt Ginette usually only called once a year, on my birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest, and she thought I should try it, too. She told me she firmly believed I could perform on stage like the other kids since she had seen me do skits (幽默小品) for the family at Christmas.

I was a little taken aback, Me? On stage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to my entire shy personality. But Aunt Ginette was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds and agreed to enter the contest. All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in Ville d'Anjou, where the competition would take place. I was taken by an energy I had never felt before. The hours and the obstacles no longer mattered. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and impact my marks. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.
