1、Lord Norman Foster, renowned as one of the world's foremost architects, has devoted decades to redefining the concept of tall buildings. "What we've done is create a sense of identify draw n from real needs," Foster said. "It's not a fashionable idea, but generated from the realities we were in." His masterpiece includes iconic structures such as the HSBC building in Hong Kong. Now, he's set his sights on Qatar.
Currently nearing completion and set to reach a height of 301 meters, Foster's Lusail Towers are ready to claim the title of Oatar's tallest buildings. Lusail Towers are intended to serve as a center for Oatar's financial institutions, with four distinctive blocks, two standing at 70 stories and two at 50 stories.
But the construction itself wasn't all plain sailing. To address the unique challenges presented by Oatar's hot climate, Foster's team had to depart from the materials commonly used in skyscrapers in cooler countries—— part of what Foster called a decades- long quest to "reinvent the tall building." The design combines advanced shading with ventilation (通风), while the towers' surfaces are coated with "marine- grade" aluminum (铝) that wraps around the buildings, protecting the glass from strong sunlight while maintaining the views and still letting in natural light. Central to the project are special shading fins (鳍), which not only optimize views and natural lighting for occupants but reduce solar radiation by 70% compared to traditional all- glass towers.
While the towers are ready to become a recognizable landmark for Lusail, Foster believes that a city's skyline reflects what lies beneath the surface. It was crucial to integrate the towers into a "low- scale master plan." They are strategically positioned on top of a subway line and at the end of a commercial avenue linking the waterfront to the nearby football stadium. According to Foster, the ground features of the plaza will play a significant role in the objective of transforming the area into a lively public space for the future.

2、For some of us, going to the dentist for routine check-ups is a thing of the ordinary. But for many people around the world, especially those in impoverished (贫困的) areas, having dental improvement and their teeth checked simply isn't possible. A Brazilian dentist Felipe Rossi has devoted himself to helping changing that situation.
Growing up in USA, Felipe Rossi had just obtained the Bachelor of Medicine Degree and was about to start a master's degree in Pediatric Dentistry (儿童口腔学) when a journey to his father's home — Balsabo in Brazil — converted his initial plan. "All locals didn't have access to dental care, and consequently, many of them suffered deformed teeth or even loss of teeth, leading to many people not daring to laugh with mouth open." Felipe Rossi recalled. "A desire was planted in my heart. That is, to use my skills to bring healthy smiles to people suffering from dental problems."
With the support of his parents, Felipe formed an NGO (non-government organization) called Porsorriso to give free oral treatments to individuals with low incomes who require cleaning. fillings, crowns, restoration work and more. His team is composed of approximately 30 registered volunteers who go with him to poor towns and villages in Brazil.
Sponsorship is generally provided by two private companies. Individuals may also make donations through the ‘Smile Solidarity' program, where they can choose monthly amounts to contribute. Porsorriso also holds regular fundraisers to afford the cost of providing free dental services around the country.
As noble as its objective is, Felipe admits that Porsorriso is "struggling to survive" because of the huge cost of providing dental work and the constant fundraising events they have to hold to keep the NGO in normal functioning. 17、I experienced years of loneliness as a child. His friends teased him about babysitting his sister and his interests were far different from mine. With no other kids of my age in the neighborhood, I had to spend hours by myself.
A bright spot for me turned out to be reading. My love of the written word began early as my mother read to me every evening. I started reading books on my own before age 5 and my mother took me to the public library once a week to borrow several books. I quickly graduated from typical children's books to ones with fewer pictures and longer chapters. Reading opened new worlds to me.
My mother also encouraged me to make what I wanted. I tried making toy cars with cardboard boxes and constructing buildings from leftover cardboard and bits of wood my father gave me. When my mother saw my creations, she told me how creative my designs were. I learned a lot about how to extend the life of objects and transform them into something new and useful. It was a trait(特点) others found helpful, and I soon had friends who wanted to make things with me.
My parents made it a point for their two kids to spend time outside, no matter the weather or season. My brother, of course, raced off to be with his friends, while I had plenty to do myself. There was making leaf houses in autumn, ice skating in winter, and so much more. They're all memories I treasure today.

B. I enjoyed reading stories aloud.
C. I was invited to play with another kid.
D. I loved the colorful photographs in the books.
E. Another habit I formed early was being outdoors.
F. Thus, I began my lifelong interest in making things.

18、While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive (互动的) activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive (被动的) screen time like watching television, especially for teens.
The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed.
Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends via social media, about 1.3 hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later.
Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. "It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities," said Anne, co-author of the study. "It's a tricky situation," she said. "These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it's hard to put a limit on them, but if you're really looking out for a teenager's health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed."

19、We have all heard those people who say " exercise addiction," but for many of us, it is hard to really love exercise. Some might even say they hate it or fear it. Why do they hate exercise? And how can they overcome this bad habit to get their bodies moving?
Throughout most of human history, because of lack of food, being active was not a wise choice. As soon as our ancestors were well fed, they rested to save energy, because they did not know where their next meal was coming from. So if you have the urge to sit down rather than go to the gym, you might find comfort in the knowledge that humans have a natural tendency to stay still.
Having said that, a growing number of people in modern society have adopted a sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle. Yet, remaining physically inactive is terrible for our health. It is recommended that adults aged 18 to 65 get at least 150 (preferably 300) minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week. If this sounds too difficult, here are some tips to help you get motivated.
According to psychologists, there are two kinds of motivation for engaging in any activity: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation arises from within an individual, while extrinsic motivation relies on external factors.
Do you work out to pass physical fitness tests or for your own sake? Having a clear picture in your mind of what you want to gain from doing exercise can help put your fitness programs into action. To boost your extrinsic motivation, try arranging to meet a friend to exercise together. You will be more likely to follow through because most people don't want to let their friends down. Furthermore, reward yourself with a new piece of sports clothing or shoes that you hope to wear while working out. Be sure to make the reward conditional on doing a certain amount of exercise so that you have to earn it.
Whatever method you adopt, be patient with yourself and keep the long game in mind--it takes around three to four months to get into the habit of regular exercise. After that, the intrinsic motivators will take over to keep your exercise routine going.

B、After you have achieved a goal set by yourself before. C、When you have saved enough money to buy something. B、To analyze the reason why people hate exercise. C、To encourage people to do some exercise. D、To solve the problem of people lacking motivation.(4)、What is the author's attitude toward people who hate exercise?A、Respectful. B、Indifferent. C、Hateful. D、Objective. -
20、I can still remember the first day when I met my best friend. She had just moved to the neighborhood and her grandmother brought her down to meet me. I hid behind my mother and she hid behind her grandmother, scared of looking at each other.
Soon, we lost the shyness and started playing with each other, riding bikes to each other's house and having sleepovers. In 7th grade she was going through family problems. However, every summer we would sit at each other's house, watch movies on TV and talk about all the boys we liked.
It was last year that I noticed the problem. She suffered from clinical depression (临床抑郁症), and had to go to a hospital during the day. I was very sorry for her at first. But with the late night calls and meeting each other halfway up the street at midnight, we still stayed in touch. I wanted to be there for her since her new best friend left her, and I knew I still cared about her like a sister.
Yesterday she came to me and said, "I never knew what a best friend was until you were the only person that would stop me from cutting myself and that ever made me feel better about myself and my problems. You didn't know this but I was trying to kill myself that very night you called me and I was crying. I owe you so much, and you didn't even know you were helping me. "
We both cried. And I guess a kind of lesson from my life so far is to never give up your friends. Even if they aren't as cool as others, or people think they are crazy, they need someone there. If you leave them, you will only be very sorry. So if your friends need you, and you care about them, you should be always there for them.
