3、People are always living with technology nowadays. Here comes a smart home, which is controlled by the touch of a button. This acts like a remote control to activate household systems and monitor inside temperatures. If done successfully, a smart home system will be integrated so smoothly that a household will appear to run itself.
Home automation is designed to introduce efficiency to a home. An efficient smart home uses sensors to prevent over watering of outdoor gardens and control room temperatures, all of which can reduce expenses. In addition to cost savings, home automation often provides a sense of security to homeowners.
Families with children or elderly adults in the home may be reassured by some safeguards in smart home security, like fire alarms that alert the appropriate agencies in the event of a problem. Lighting activation runs on timers, which can be a life saver if an oven is left on when someone leaves the home.
Home automation is not just for safety, however. With a centralized control unit, a person does not have to leave the couch to turn down the blinds or even order groceries, which can be automated.
Such a home becomes dependent on technology for routine tasks. If something goes wrong with the central automation unit, it is not just one appliance at risk as malfunctions can disrupt systems that are vital to running a home. As a result, for all people, a home can become a place of technical faults that repeatedly require repair.
A. Smart devices can talk to each other.
B. It achieves this by saving homeowners time and money.
C. There are some drawbacks with an automated home system.
D. It can also provide convenience for people living in the home.
E. Through home automation, an entire house can be connected via a smart controller.
F. Besides protecting people, it also offers security for expensive items inside a residence.
G. Home automation enables you to operate your equipment with the sound of your voice.

4、What's the effect of poetry on our brain? Scientists have been investigating the neuronal (神经元的) connections and brain circuits that can work in the reading of poetry for some time. And, even though the research has only just begun, the results are already fascinating.
Poetry has the oldest recorded texts in literature. Although it's impossible to say exactly when it began to be used in the oral tradition, we dare to say that it's accompanied humanity forever. This gives us an idea of the impact that poetic language can have on our emotional and cognitive state. The emotional response to literature in general shares areas of activation with music. However, more areas of the right hemisphere (半球) seem to be related to poetry. The researchers measured the goosebumps resulting from the tingling (强烈感受) sensation in reading poetry. This type of sensation has also been proven to result from music. However, the tingling sensations produced by poetry activate different areas of the brain compared to those activated by music.
Dr. Eugen Wassiliwizky's team collected data on behavioral responses in people reading or listening to poetry. They proved that poetry is capable of causing emotional responses and rich emotional experiences. In addition, a poem expresses the poet's ideas. From a psychological view, poetry is a game of language that manages to group words in a surprising way. We could compare this with how a chef combines ingredients that seem impossible to combine, producing extraordinary results. Poetry is based on rules of construction. It sets up a rhythm, which then breaks, before finally returning to it. The play on the meanings of words, sometimes several meanings in just one word, is extremely intellectually inspiring. We can read a poem a thousand times, and still find its new meanings.
Generally, our passage through the wonderful world of poetry is cut short by a rather reduced exposure during childhood and the overly analytical approach of this literary genre (类型), which is given in most schools. Although the studies that experts have conducted on poetry get a lot of interesting results, poetry still holds a mystery that science hasn't yet been able to investigate. For example, why a perfect cadence (抑扬顿挫) and rhythm can lift the spirit of people is the new challenge for the research.
(1)、What is the main difference between poetry and music?A、Music causes fewer goosebumps. B、Poetry creates more tingling sensations. C、They work on different parts of the brain. D、They are processed in different parts of the brain.(2)、What does the author probably think of poetry?A、It expresses something about the poet. B、It is vague in its meaning but rich in emotional experience. C、It combines ingredients and extraordinary results. D、It's a pure game of language that only surprises readers.(3)、What might be the problem when we learn poetry at school?A、We make children more exposed to it. B、We haven't read a poem a thousand times. C、We rely too much on our teachers. D、We analyze this literary genre too much.(4)、Where can you read the passage?A、In a paper on geography. B、In a newspaper. C、In a biography. D、In a magazine on wildlife. -
5、Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each.
When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin's story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it — a vital role that keeps waste manageable. In New York City, the administrative department collects only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled. Rubbish collectors, however, keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies. The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property once it's on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence, but that protection hasn't always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from rats, containers are made clearly inaccessible for collectors.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the corporations", says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. "Because I recycle doesn't mean I am less of a person than anyone else," she says. It's a pity to see that the government doesn't stand by the garbage collector's side, either.
Fortunately, some governments are starting to realize that protecting the environment and humanity go hand in hand. Brazil classified waste picking as an official occupation in 2001. In 2009, Colombia's government granted the right to collect valuable garbage. The U.S. is slowly catching on too. After all, to the government, the garbage is garbage, but to the collectors, it's something they make a living on.
(1)、What is the author's purpose of telling about Marin?A、To highlight waste collectors' role. B、To reflect the unemployed's hardship. C、To praise her devotion to her daughter. D、To show the seriousness of unemployment.(2)、How does the author show the importance of waste pickers' work in paragraph 3?A、By citing reference. B、By contrasting. C、By giving definitions. D、By cause-effect analysis.(3)、What would Marin agree with?A、No job is noble or humble. B、Business is business. C、The early birds catches worms. D、One good turn deserves another.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、Who owns our garbage? B、How can we end poverty? C、Who takes blame for waste? D、How should we recycle rubbish? -

""It gives me a purpose. It makes me feel better because I can provide for my family." he said.
His original worry was not being able to be there for his daughter. Now, he is her mentor (导师), because she's an employee at Lighthouse Works as well. He said, "Little kids come to their parents, and all of a sudden when they become teenagers, they go away. Now, we're going back again to those days that my daughter used to come to me all the time. 8、阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I had a dream from primary school: to work in television. My parents owned a little grocery store, so we were definitely not fancy people. Thankfully, my dad had raised me to have a lot of confidence. He often said, "You can do anything you want to do." My dad was particularly supportive. He was my steady rock — always there for me.
With his help and encouragement, I was admitted to the radio and television arts program at Ryerson in Toronto. I really loved the program and worked hard and I was named the most outstanding graduate. I felt like I was already living my dream. I began to think that maybe I could apply for an internship in CBC or CTV.
Luckily, Global Television had just started broadcasting in Canada that year. I thought to myself: I'm new and they're new, so if Fm going to get to know one person at Global, it might as well be the president. I was scared, but I knew deep down inside that this was what I wanted. When I called my dad and told him my plan, he said, "Good, Faye. That's exactly what you should do."
With my heart just about pounding out of my body, I called up the president of Global Television. Suddenly Mr. Slaight was on the phone. "I've heard that your studio facilities are amazing. I could come at eleven o'clock on Monday or eleven o'clock on Sunday for a tour. What would suit you better?" I caught him totally off guard. He stuttered a bit, and then picked a day. When I hung up, I was scared but excited.
I arrived at the studio on the appointed day. When Mr. Slaight took me around, he looked at me and said, "What do you want?" He sounded furious but curious. "All I want is a chance to audition. I just want you to know my face. That's all I'm asking."
I didn't know whether I'd ever hear from him again, but two weeks later, his secretary called, "Mr. Slaight wants to know if you'd like to come and audition for a new school life show." I immediately answered,"Sure!"

10、阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels (publish) in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted (do) it professionally. Many works of fiction appeared the names of the authors, often with something like "By a lady." Novels, for the most part, (look) upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as (it) first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership. Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. (remove) him from the pantheon (名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.
How did Dickens get to the top? It's partly true that Dickens' style of writing (attract) audiences from all walks of life. It's party that his writings rode a wave of social, political and (science) progress. But it's also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such distinguished writer.

11、In habitats across the planet, animals periodically drop everything to walk, fly or swim to a new place. Wildlife such as whales and geese learn migration paths by following their parents. Others, including small songbirds, gain the distance and direction of their migration within their genetic code. And some animals use a combination of genetics and culture to guide their migration.
Another group of migrators does not quite fit either model, and researchers have only recently started to figure out how they find their way. Take the Cory's shearwater, an oceangoing sea bird that migrates over the Atlantic every year. The young do not migrate with their parents, so culture cannot explain their journeys. And the exact paths vary wildly from individual to individual, making genetics equally unlikely.
Cory's shearwaters are long-lived, rarely producing young successfully before age nine. This leaves an opening for learning and practice to develop their migration patterns. Researchers call this the "exploration-refinement", and until now it has been hypothetical (假设的) because of difficulties in tracking migratory animals' movements.
But a team of researchers has done that by attaching small geolocators to more than 150 of the birds aged four to nine. They found that younger birds traveled longer distances, for longer periods, and had more diverse paths than older birds. "We finally have evidence of the ‘exploration-refinement' for migratory birds," says Letizia Campioni, who led the study. Younger Cory's shearwaters are able to fly just as fast as the adults— but they do not, suggesting that the young do more exploring, which gradually fades as they mature and settle into a preferred course.
Although it may seem less efficient than other strategies, "exploration refinement could be beneficial to birds and other organisms (生物) in a rapidly changing world due to unpredictable man-made changes," says Barbara Frei. "It might be safer to repeat a behavior that was recently successful than to rely on patterns that were perfected long ago but might no longer be safe."
(1)、What is the first paragraph mainly about?A、It describes animals' habitats. B、It talks about migration models. C、It compares different species. D、It introduces a tracking technology.(2)、What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 3 refer to?A、The opening for learning and practice. B、The unique living habit of Cory's shearwaters. C、The way Cory's shearwaters form their migration patterns. D、The process scientists track Cory's shearwaters' movements.(3)、What does Letizia's study find about the younger Cory's shearwaters?A、They travel as much as adult birds. B、They move in a predictable manner. C、They lower the speed for exploration. D、They look for a course with their parents.(4)、What can we conclude from the last paragraph?A、Man-made changes make migration easier. B、Animals make a safer journey via a fixed track. C、Course exploration contributes to birds' adaptability. D、A combination of strategies assures migration success. -
12、OpenAI on Thursday announced its most direct threat yet to its strong Big Tech rivals: a search engine that uses artificial intelligence built in from the beginning.
The company is testing SearchGPT, which will combine its AI technology with real-time information from the web to allow people to search for information in the same way they talk to ChatGPT. The search engine is currently in an early test for a limited number of users. With the new feature, OpenAI will be directly competing with Google, which has for years dominated the online search market. SearchGPT could also pose a threat to Microsoft.
With SearchGPT, users will be able to ask questions in natural language, and they'll receive answers that they can then follow up on with additional questions. But unlike ChatGPT, which is often reliant on older data to generate its answers, SearchGPT will provide up-to-date information, with online links to what the company says are "clear and relevant sources." The tool will also show a sidebar with additional links to relevant information.
The OpenAI search engine could promote generative AI after Google has experimented with early efforts to incorporate chatbots and AI-generated answers into the search experience. But Google quickly pulled back on use of the feature after it provided false, and in some cases totally nonsensical information, in response to some users' queries.
The launch of Google's tool also raised concerns among some news publishers and similar concerns could arise with OpenAI's search engine. However, OpenAI said Thursday that it partnered with publishers to build the tool and give them options to "manage how they appear" in SearchGPT's results.
(1)、What can be learned about SearchGPT from paragraph 2?A、It is not well-developed and still under test. B、It challenges Google, but beats Microsoft. C、Lots of users have tried it online up to now. D、It has controlled the online search market for years.(2)、Which is the advantage of SearchGPT?A、Provision of infinite questions. B、Easy access based on previous data. C、Natural communication via ChatGPT. D、Latest information with additional links(3)、What is OpenAI's attitude towards SearchGPT's result?A、Dismissive. B、Positive. C、Suspicious. D、Indifferent.(4)、What is a suitable title for the text?A、OpenAI Will Combine Search Engine and ChatGPT B、SearchGPT Becomes Popular among Users Currently C、OpenAI Is Taking on Google with a New Artificial Intelligence Search Engine D、Google's Launch of AI Search Engine Was a Failure Due to False Information -
13、The view from the top was breathtaking. It was 2023 and I had just climbed the Hvannadals Peak in Iceland, almost seven years after becoming paralyzed from the chest down after a climbing fall. My two teammates and I were on our way to becoming the first all-disabled team to cross Europe's largest ice cap, the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, unsupported and unassisted.
A year before, when Niall McCann first suggested making the 100–mile trip, I was excited by the prospect of returning to this lost world of crevasses (冰裂缝), mountains and ice, but upset and anxious about whether I'd struggle. Back then, I still would have given anything for my legs to work and to be able to walk again. But I was eager for adventure and signed on to do the trip with McCann, who had broken his back when paragliding, and EdJackson, a former professional rugby player who had broken his neck in 2017.
This was going to be the toughest challenge of my life. And yet, with each drive of my poles into the snow, I pushed myself further from civilization — and closer to the man I'd once been.
My mind drifted to the last time I was on a mountain before my accident, climbing Monte Rosa in the Italian Alps and feeling the addictive mixture of excitement and trepidation. Those same emotions returned as we battled through powerful storms and hidden crevasses before we reached the ice cap's highest point.
I was at the top when I was hit by an unexpected wave of emotion. I realized that, despite all that I had been through — all the challenges and setbacks I had faced — if someone asked me if I wanted my legs back, I would have said no. That moment affected every aspect of my life and the way I perceived my disability. No longer did I consider myself disabled or injured, because, if I could reach the summit of a remote ice cap, I could overcome the frustrations and setbacks of day-to-day life with resilience and persistence. Yes, I do still have a life-changing injury — but, for me, it's been for the better.
(1)、What can you know about the team?A、It got assistance from an organization. B、Its members all had a form of disability. C、It followed the steps of a similar previous team. D、It consisted of people paralyzed down the chest.(2)、What might have really caused the writer to hesitate about the trip?A、His paralyzed legs. B、Fear of potential danger. C、The lost world of ice. D、Lack of proper equipment.(3)、What's does the underlined word "trepidation" in paragraph 4 probably mean?A、Fear. B、Bravery. C、Happiness. D、Disappointment.(4)、What did the writer think of his injury after he made it to the top?A、It left him nothing but all setbacks. B、It caused his unexpected bad emotion. C、He wouldn't know his potential otherwise. D、He was tortured by the frustrations it caused. -

"No, little girl. You can't get in without the money." Jeffrey, the bus driver, told a little girl who wanted to get on the bus but only had a few pennies. She must have been around seven years old, and he wasn't in the mood to deal with unaccompanied children that day.
"Please, sir. I want to visit my grandmother," the little girl begged. "Then go ask your parents for the money and come back next time," Jeffrey replied and gestured with his hand for the girl to get out. She finally left the bus with her shoulders lowered. Jeffrey saw her sit down at the bus stop and drove off.
He finished his route and went home for the lunch, greeting his wife, Greta, and sitting down on the couch to rest. When he browsed his Facebook posts, an image caught his attention. A picture was shared of the little girl he had just turned away a few hours earlier. The word "Missing" was written on top of the image. He learned that the girl had disappeared a day ago, and her parents were desperately trying to find her.
"Dear! What have I done?" he asked himself, standing up and going to the front door. When Greta asked where he was going, Jeffrey said, "Greta! Quick! Call 911 and this number," showing her the picture of the girl. "I saw this girl at a bus stop earlier, and I turned her away because she didn't have enough money. I'm going to find her, but please make those calls." Having told her where the bus stop was, he went out.
Jeffrey rushed to his car, speeding to the bus stop. Hopefully, the girl was smart enough to stay in one place. He couldn't believe how careless he had been earlier. She was a little girl all alone. As he drove to the bus stop, Jeffrey vowed to be more careful in the future, especially when it came to children.

My niece was2 by a plant full of blooming flowers. She approached it and admired its unique beauty. Suddenly she3 that the plant was in a pile of filth(污秽). She could not put up with the4 of dirt with such fantastic flowers.
She figured out a plan to clean the plant. She5 the plant with all her might from the dirt and washed its6 in running tap water till all traces of dirt were washed away. She then placed the plant on a clean stone and went away, proud that she had done a great7.
Later her father came to the garden and noticed the uprooted plant, which had lain8 in the baking sun. His little daughter ran over to9 her achievement. "I have cleaned it, Daddy," she reported10.
The father showed her how her treatment had nearly killed the plant and told her that the filthy soil provided the best11 to grow that plant. On hearing that, the girl felt guilty that the plant had suffered by her cleaning.
A great gardener mixes the12 soil for each plant.13, God provides each of us with the best14 required for optimum (最佳) spiritual growth. But it may appear to be15 and we may even complain to God about our difficulty.

19、Short-form videolso known as Shorts, have gained great popularity, particularly on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, there's a growing concern that watching too many Shorts can affect children's brains.
The phenomenon known as "TikTok Brain" arises from the app's short and addictive videos. Similar to candy, these videos generate rapid dopamine (多巴胺) releases, stimulating the brain's pleasure center. A study was conducted to investigate the impact of Shorts on the teenage brains. They stimulated the brain's reward centers more intensely than random videos.
Our brains process visual information faster than text, which explains why videos tend to outperform text-based content online. Due to their underdeveloped reading skills, children are more easily to become addicted to visual stimuli. Remarkably, social media platforms can do a lot harm to the development of reading habits among younger users.
According to Jessica Griffin, a professor of child psychology, Shorts affect the developing brains of children and teenagers. The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质) is responsible for attention, self-control, memory, and learning flexibility. This delayed development makes young individuals more easily influenced by Shorts.
In conclusion, the constant exposure to fast-paced and stimulating content in Shorts can impact children's attention. To address this issue, parents can have open conversations with their children about the potential risks. Furthermore, encouraging physical activities and outdoor experiences is also crucial to develop a balance d lifestyle.
A. Some even do not include text at all.
B. TikTok's feed is created addictive by design.
C. But it does not fully mature until around the age of 25.
D. It is helpful to use screen time management tools for Shorts.
E. Short-term memory and the ability to concentrate are affected.
F. It revealed that these videos are personalized, selected and fed to users.
G. They're brief attention-grabbing videos that can be entertaining and addictive.

20、The development of bigger brains has long been considered a characteristic of our species' increased intelligence and subsequent dominance (主宰) on this planet. The last two million years of our evolution were marked by a nearly fourfold (四倍的) increase in brain volume. But a growing body of evidence suggests our brains recently changed in an unexpected way: They diminished in size sometime following the end of the last Ice Age.
The precise timing of that post-Ice Age brain shrink has remained a mystery until now. A group of researchers led by DeSilva used a mixture of fossil and modern sample data to confirm that this loss of gray matter happened between 3,000 to 5,000 years ago, according to research published in June in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. DeSilva's group calculated that human brains had remained roughly the same size in average volume, about 1,450 cubic centimeters, for roughly the past 150,000 years. That average rapidly dropped by around 10%, or up to 150 cubic centimeters, over the course of the last few millennia.
DeSilva's group found that not only did the human brain size shrink in general, but also it decreased relative to our body size, suggesting that brain size reduction isn't just a byproduct of our shrinking bodies.
Many anthropologists had explained the changes coincided with the appearance of agricultural practices around 10,000 years ago, and a global shift away from hunting and gathering. DeSilva's group point to booming eras for ancient civilizations in North Africa, the Middle East and South America — complex societies that they think may have played a role in the shrinkage.
The researchers suggested that perhaps our need to maintain a large brain to keep track of information about food, social relationships, and our environment has also relaxed in the past few millennia because we could store information externally in other members of our social circles and groups. That trend is likely strengthened by our use of books, personal devices and the Internet.
"Like, computers used to be the size of a room, and now they fit in your pocket, so it is important not to relate brain size to smarts." DeSilva said.
(1)、What can be known about the human brain size?A、Our brain volume has been keeping increasing. B、The size of human brain has dropped to 150 cubic centimeters. C、Until now, the accurate timing of brain shrink is no longer mysterious. D、Fossils and sample data are used to figure out the exact brain shrink period.(2)、Which is not the reason for brain shrinkage?A、Appearance of agriculture. B、Decreased body size. C、Developed human society. D、Improved brain mechanism.(3)、What is DeSilva and his group's view on the reduction of human brain size?A、A smaller human brain is less smarter. B、The reduction of human brain size is just a coincidence. C、It is a result of brain's adjustment to social development. D、The shrinkage of human brain relaxed us the need to store information.(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?A、Reasons for a smarter brain. B、Brain's mysteries to be revealed. C、The precise timing of brain shrink. D、Brain sizes changing circumstantially.
