The constant waves in rivers, unlike the ocean, allow surfers to practice constantly. Technological advancements have helped transform river surfing from a rare to a mainstream activity. The growing interest is evident in the number of cars at the WOKA Whitewater park in Oklahoma, exceeding expectations. 

WOKA offers rent gear(齿轮) and live webcams(摄像头) to check wave conditions. The community support for such activities is also noticeable, with businesses related to Whitewater activities expanding into the area. Other cities are looking to reproduce these successes with plans for Whitewater parks on their rivers. 

However, challenges remain, including water quality issues, variable river flows, and safety risks associated with fast- moving water. Despite these barriers, river surfing looks set to continue its rise in popularity, offering both thrills and economic opportunities for many communities.

1978. The recognition was well- deserved for its insightful portrayal(描写) of the bond between the human spirit and the wilderness. 

Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall

( For ages 4 to 8)

Waves roll by, seasons come and go, keepers tend to their duties, and through it all, the lighthouse stands tall, sending its light out into the darkness, signaling hello to all the ships at sea. The Caldecott winner Sophie Blackall does a significant job showing the timeless nature of lighthouse life— and the change that's coming. 

The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander and Kadir Nelson

( For ages 6 to 9)

One of the most— if not the most— beautiful books on this list. Kadir Nelson's fancy, photorealistic paintings pair with Kwa me Alexander's powerful words for a tribute (致敬) to decades of Black brilliance, pain and perseverance. " This is one of those texts that really spoke to me; it was beautifully written and I

felt it was a really great pairing of words and pictures of an author and an artist, " Nelson said. 

Harlem by Walter and Christopher

( For ages 9 and up)

This poem by Walter Dean Myers—a revered elder of children's literature— celebrates Harlem, where he grew up, full of" colors loud enough to be heard" and songs first heard in the villages of" Ghana/ Mali/ Senegal". His son Christopher's vivid illustrations, part paint and part co llage (拼贴画), don't talk down to kids, instead pulling them into a lively city. 

Our school holds an annual book fair each January, where new and used books are available for students to purchase. Our librarian, Mr. Egan, is the school sponsor （主办者） for it. Traditionally, the tenth-grade students are responsible for the planning, set-up, and selling at the fair. I am sure that Mr. Egan consulted our teacher, Ms. Cates, for suggestions as to who would be the student directors, and I was pleasantly surprised when he approached me to be one of the students in charge. I was even more surprised when he told me that the student I would be working with was Charlie Lyons. 

Charlie and I have known each other since kindergarten but have never been close. Ever since we were partners for the science project last year, there is very little we choose to say to each other. Needless to say, the science project fell short of our expectations. In light of that event, I was shocked that Mr. Egan and Ms. Cates found us a suitable match. 

At the meeting with Mr. Egan, we divided the responsibilities between us. I would be in charge of setting up the room and getting the volunteers to work the sale for all three days. Charlie would be in charge of all the books. We were both quite satisfied with our jobs, and even more satisfied that there would be little contact between us. 

With only two weeks to plan, I knew I could not waste time. I asked John and Rachel to help me with the set-up and twelve other classmates to work at the fair. I figured that, between Mr. Egan, the friends who volunteered to help, and me, we would be just fine. 

Meanwhile, I tried on two separate occasions to start a conversation with Charlie about the progress he was making, but each time his response was, "Everything's cool." 

On the day of the set-up, my friends and I arrived, only to find Charlie with his head in his hands, surrounded by a million boxes of books. I asked him, "Charlie, what's wrong?"

The historic city of Suzhou, abouthour's drive from Shanghai, is laced with canals. Old buildings line the banks. A century ago some of these would have been chaguans, or traditional teahouses, locals gathered to discuss the news or conduct business. Today a visitor is more likely(spot) shops serving a different kind of beverage. Some even look like old chaguans.

Between 2010 and 2022 coffee consumption per person in China, according to the International Coffee Organization, (rise) four times. But the average Chinese person still drinks a small part of the amount of coffee consumed by the typical American: 0.1kg per year(compare) with 4.7kg.

The early history of coffee in China is fuzzy. A record from Qing dynasty described coffeea "black liquor, which the foreigners drank after meals, (claim) it can help with digestion". But after China introduced market reformsopened up to the world in the 1980s, foreign(firm) such as Nestlé brought instant coffee to the country, catering to local tastes. At that time, the biggest coffee drinking groups were white-collar workers, considering coffee' s high price.

Today, though, a wider range of the population is drinking coffee thanks to the rise of domestic coffee chains like Luckin selling(afford) drinks.

I was interested in volunteering at a hospital because both of my parents work in hospitals. I wanted to see what the 1 was after hearing them talk about it. To be more 2 , I wanted to work at the VA — a hospital in Palo Alto because the 3 of VA is "to serve those who served" and I really 4 this very idea.

To my greatest joy, I was 5 the VA program, and throughout this summer break I've spent around 110 hours 6 at VA Palo Alto in different departments. To be honest, I had never at all felt more welcomed and 7 in every department I went to. After some initial experiences, I 8 to work in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) since I am interested in computers, and I wanted to see how they are used in a hospital setting.

Lying awake for hours before falling asleep is a common problem. Even if you can finally fall asleep, taking too long to fall asleep can lead to too few hours of sleep altogether. So people having trouble falling asleep always wonder how they can sleep well.

Parents know from experience that gentle music can help babies fall asleep. Science supports this, showing that children of all ages, from babies to elementary school children, sleep better after listening to comfortable music. Fortunately, children aren't the only ones who can benefit from gentle music before bedtime. 

Listening to music likely improves sleep for more than one reason. Music can promote sleep directly by affecting your physiology (生理机能).  Besides, it can also promote sleep by becoming a healthy bedtime habit. Many people can't fall asleep quickly because stressful and worrying thoughts keep them awake at night. By listening to music, the mind has something else to focus on. With time, the practice of listening to music at bedtime becomes more effective as the brain positively associates music with sleep.

Studies have looked at many types of music and playlists but there isn't a clear answer about the best music for sleep. What we do know is that researchers have typically used either a self-made playlist or one that has been designed especially with sleep in mind. One of the most important things on how music affects a person's body is their own musical preferences. For those who don't want to design their own playlist, online music services have stepped in and usually offer playlists for sleep or relaxation.

Damian Stefaniuk and his colleagues at Massachusetts Institute of Technology （MIT） have developed a novel energy storage device—a supercapacitor— using three basic, inexpensive materials： water, cement, and a soot （煤灰）, which can carry electricity. 

Supercapacitors are highly efficient at storing energy but differ from batteries in some important ways. They can charge much more quickly than a lithium （锂） battery and don't experience the same level of performance decline over time. But supercapacitors also release the power they store rapidly, making them less useful in devices such as mobile phones, laptops or electric cars where a steady supply of energy is needed over an extended period of time. 

Yet according to Stefaniuk, these supercapacitors could make an important contribution to efforts to reduce carbon emissions and make the global economy more environmentally friendly. "If it can be scaled up, the technology can help solve an important issue— the storing of renewable energy," he says. 

He and his fellow researchers at MIT envision several applications for their supercapacitors. One might be to create roads that store solar energy and then release it to recharge electric cars wirelessly as they drive along a road. The rapid release of energy from the supercapacitors would allow vehicles to get a rapid boost to their batteries. Another application would be using supercapacitors in the foundations or walls of houses, so that these parts of the house not only support the structure but also store energy. 

"But it's still early stages. Right now, the supercapacitor made from building materials can only store just under 300 watt-hours per cubic meter, enough to power a 10-watt LED light for 30 hours. The power might seem low compared to regular batteries, but a foundation made from 30-40 cubic meters of this material could meet the daily energy needs of a house," says Stefaniuk. "Since this material is used so widely around the world, it has the potential to be very competitive and useful for energy storage." 

A casual walk along the Beijing Central Axis, connecting the Drum Tower and the impressive Forbidden City — this was Zhao's first city-walking journey in the spring of last year. Since then, the 21-year-old student from Beijing Foreign Studies University has remained a city-walk fan, believing it to be the best way to "rediscover a city". 

"I visited Beijing before the start of my college life here, and it was a typical package tour during which going to scenic spots and taking photos was a big thing. The crowded tourist attractions gave me the impression that Beijing was a noisy place," Zhao said. 

With the increasing variety of travel choices, traditional group tours no longer satisfy people who are looking for a more personal and different travel experience and hoping to explore every part of the city in a more immersive （沉浸式的） way. 

Compared with tightly scheduled routes （路线） and picture-taking tours, city-walking focuses on free, casual and spontaneous （自发的） experiences. The trending city-walk culture, which encourages experiencing urban life with no transportation means except one's legs and feet, has also made splashes on various social media platforms. 

On the video-sharing app Douyin, the Chinese version of Tik-Tok, a recent video about citywalk routes in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, has gained more than 171,000 likes, with 72,000 viewers of all ages adding the video to their favorites. According to a report from lifestyle-sharing platform Xiaohongshu, in the first half of this year, searches about city-walks increased 30-fold from the previous year. "The route offers a glimpse （瞥见） into the culture and landscape in different historical stages, as well as its beautiful natural scenery," it said. 

Following his experience in Beijing, Zhao has also explored Wuhan in Hubei province, Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and other cities through city-walking tours. "City-walking is all about doing whatever you want in your own exploration of a city, and it is actually the kind of slow-paced, low-carbon lifestyle that I relate to so much," he said. 

The idea of climbing Mt.Qomolangma disgusted me. The mountain came to represent the opposite of everything that I loved and respected about climbing. What had once been the final mountain climbing goal became the focus of a commercial guiding industry. Over the years, the crowds at Base Camp grew, leaving behind tons of trash. Whenever I was asked whether I'd climb Mt. Qomolangma, my answer was always the same： not interested. 

That was probably where my personal Mt. Qomolangma story would have ended, were it not for an old friend Thom Pollard and his obsession （迷恋） with one of the greatest mysteries. In 1999, he began to explore and found the remains of George Mallory, the celebrated British climber who disappeared while he was attempting to be the first to climb Mt. Qomolangma. But Mallory's partner, Sandy Irvine, and the camera he had likely carried, were not found. The mountain climbing world has been wondering whether they might have reached the top in 1924. 

Pollard's story moved me. I began to pack for the climb and expected that our advanced equipment would make it manageable, perhaps easy. I was wrong. On the highest point on the planet, I was more tired than I'd ever been in any climbing. Along the way, I continuously tipped my hat, not just to Mallory and Irvine but to anyone who has the drive to push himself or herself up this route. My search was in vain, but I began to reconsider Mt. Qomolangma.

I witnessed many climbers, who were much more than just self-centered tourists. We shared route information, weather forecasts, and family photos — all united around a common goal. 

I went to Mt. Qomolangma to seek Irvine. But in the end, I found something more difficult to get： the spirit that Irvine and Mallory shared. It was hiding in plain sight, right where it has always been： inside the brave souls who risk so much to follow in storied adventurers' footsteps up Mt. Qomolangma.
