A few years ago, the company that I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I've always loved running, so I was really happy when I found I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go running before I went to work.

Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn't take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn't have anything? But one morning, my wife gave me 10 dollars and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He said sorry to me and continued running. For a while, I didn't think too much of it.

However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was a little strange. The warning of robbers in the park hit me. "It could have been a robber!" I suddenly became anxious, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ra n after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted," Give me the 10 dollars! Now!" I am not usually a hot-headed(性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn't believe the robbery was actually happening to me.

Filled with anger, I shook my fist(拳头) at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me 10 dollars. Then he ran away as fast as he could. I bought the bread and went home.

As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to tell my wife the story. "You won't believe what happened to me," I said with pride. She immediately stopped me, "I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table."

Growing a plant in space is not an easy task. (normal), growing eatable and nutritious plants is difficult enough here on Earth, so imagine  challenging it would be to grow those greens in microgravity(微重力) and under highly (control) soil conditions, humidity(湿度), light, and various gases.

Traditionally, roots grow and spread downwards due  gravity. Still, in space, where  effect of gravity is slight, things change, and they do so quite strongly. Can you imagine a plant floating in a spaceship, with its roots  (stick) out in every direction? Therefore, keeping this entire system in a good condition is very important. To achieve this, RickMastracchio, the (found) of a special container named "Veggie", made great efforts with his partner for a few years.

Cultivating a plant in space is just one part of a  (complex) and larger effort. Astronaut farmers must ensure that the plants growing in such artificial conditions are safe to consume, have no side effects and are pleasant (eat).

What is a Mobile Blog?

A mobile blog is a type of blog that is written and submitted via a cellular telephone, internet-connected personal digital assistants or other connected portable device in most cases. The advantage of a mobile blog is that it gives the writer a chance to record his or her thoughts immediately. 

What makes a mobile blog popular is the fact that many phone s now come equipped with digital cameras.  They can be selected to be displayed on a computer monitor. Thus, a mobile blog can not only include text, but a picture as well, adding to the overall interest of the piece. Anything that sets a blog apart, such as a photo, can be a very useful tool.

 These phone s often have full keyboards laid out in a fashion similar to a computer keyboard. Actually, judging from the real experience of operating, writing on them can be inconvenient.  These smartphones also have the ability of connecting to the internet, as most people using them will choose internet service, which can make filing a mobile blog even easier.

The mobile blog is based on the same principle as the short message service, only expanded a little bit to include longer pieces, and additional media, such as photos. The blogs may be readable on other phones or may be available, in some cases, for review on computers. It should be noted that many mobile phones may not support traditional online blogging software programs.

If you live in a region where winter weather is a regular risk, you are likely used to pouring salt on your sidewalks. But how does it work? And how much salt do humans pour onto our planet's surface? The second question is easier to answer: a lot.

Salt doesn't directly melt ice, nor does it make snow simply disappear. Instead it makes water less likely to freeze in a phenomenon called freezing point depression. In the case of simple rock salt, which is a rawer, less pure version of table salt, each molecule(分子) splits into smaller elements. Normally, when water freezes into ice, its molecules line up to form a stable, orderly structure. Salt interrupts the process, however, and temperatures must drop lower to overcome that interruption and for freezing to occur.

But if salt needs to interact with liquid water, how does it do anything when temperatures are stubbornly below freezing, and water should already be in the form of ice? That's where cars help clear their own way by creating friction and, in turn, heat. The friction allows for the ice that has already frozen to melt a little bit, making it unlikely to freeze.

Beyond rock salt's ability to clear icy streets, it can also be destructive. Chloride ions(氯离子) can cause wear and tear on vehicle s and facilities. Increasing chloride densities in North American lakes could begin to upset local eco logy and degrade sources of drinking water.

Many local governments are looking for alternatives to rock salt. Other salts such as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride work in the same way as rock salt, and they're perhaps even more efficient. Some experiments are testing other ice-preventing solutions, including those that contain sugars instead of or in addition to salts. Another approach relies more heavily on sand, which can mechanically make roads safer. All of this experimentation is aimed at ensuring people can travel in any weather condition—a Herculean task when winter brings its worst.

Rising temperatures driven by the climate crisis are cutting the sleep of people across the world, the largest study to date has found.

The researchers used data from sleep-tracking wristbands used by 47,000 people over seven months and across 68 countries. The analysis revealed that because of increasing night-time temperatures, the average global citizen is losing 44 hours of sleep a year.

However, lost sleep affects some groups much more than others. The sleep loss per degree of warming is about a quarter higher for women than men, twice as high for those over 65years old and three times higher for those in less wealthy nations, where people have less access to cooling equipment.

Previous studies have shown that rising temperatures damage health, including increasing heart attacks, mental health crises, and accidents and injuries. Poor sleep has also been shown to have these effects, and the researchers say their new study suggests that disturbed sleep may be a key mechanism(体内机制) by which heat causes these health impacts. The researchers say their data shows no signs of people being able to adapt to hotter nights.

"In this study, we provide the first planetary-scale (世界范围的) evidence that warmer than average temperatures cut human sleep," said Kelton Minor, who led the research . "It's very likely the effect is more serious." Minor added that the research had important implications for policymakers, who need to ensure cities, towns and buildings are well adapted to heat in order to reduce the health impacts.

The data used in the study came mainly from richer nations. The wristbands also tended to be worn by people less prone (易于遭受) to sleep disturbance by warmer temperatures. "Lower-income people are underrepresented in the data and we're well aware of that," said Minor. He said more research was needed, particularly in places that are already among the hottest in the world.

Ian McKenna was in third grade when he learned that many kids at his Austin school weren't getting enough to eat at home. He wanted to help, but local volunteer organizations turned him away, saying he was too young. So he decided to find his own solution. For years, he had been gardening with his mother, and they often sent their vegetables to the neighbors. "I'm good at gardening," says McKenna, now 16."Why not plant a garden at school, so that kids in need could take food home?"

McKenna persuaded his school to set aside space for a garden; then he asked the community for donations of seeds and equipment. Other students donated their time. Within months, McKenna's garden was producing lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers for students and their families. Now, seven years later, McKenna's Giving Garden project has expanded to five area schools in addition to his own backyard garden. For most of his gardening activities, McKenna wears the same T-shirt in different colors, with his personal motto on it: BE A GOOD HUMAN. To him, that means helping in any way you can, no matter what your age.

"Even a smile might change someone's life." he says. "It lets them know that they are important. It can make their day."

When the epidemic hit the U. S., McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals to distribute (配送) to the hungry on the weekends. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn't work on community garden, he started offering online classes and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry.

The DC Public Library offers part time jobs for teens through the Teens of Distinction Program. Teens work 10-12 hours per week all year long, helping the library with important tasks and projects. The Teens of Distinction Program is now hiring! To apply, you have to:

●have and maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average

● be 16 to 18 years old

●be able to work 10-12 hours per week

●be able to work for DCPL for at least 9 months

Teen Volunteer Opportunities

If you want to earn community service hours for school, Youth202 is a good choice.

Youth202 is a radio program created by youth and for youth. You can learn radio production skills, interview people around you, and help keep other teens to learn news, events, and anything else you think is important.

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP)

Every summer, teens can work here to help library customers organize books and learn lots of new skills, such as program planning, writing and media production.

On Friday, January 25 at 12:15 pm, the application for the 2014 SYEP will be open to teens between the ages of 14 and 21.

Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited this year, so teens are encouraged to apply early, and remember not to miss the deadline, Saturday, February 16.
