1、It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows. As we looked out of the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away.
I looked at the emptiness outside Then I saw all three chickens sitting around the edge of a white bucket. How was this strong wind not blowing them into the field beyond? I quickly put on my long heavy winter coat and large boots.
I shouted at the wind as it blew. I was alone, struggling in the snow. My children stared out of the window into the vast white sea of snow, their eyes focused for any sign of movement. Outside I heard the sound of my boots as I struggled through the snow.
The snow circling around me, I slowly made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent (弯下) forward and away from the wind. I gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside. Then I began the freezing walk back to the small shed (棚子) directly behind our house. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.
As I shut the shed doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheering, and so did I! I wasn't some superman from movies. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children's faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.

2、Snowboarding genius Su Yiming made a name for himself by winning China's first Olympic gold in the sport on Tuesday. By cleanly stomping back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landedthe biggest prize so far in his young career — gold in the men's Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The notable achievement realized a childhood dream to reach the peak of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.
Now with two shinning medals hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut (首秀) as an unbelievable experience that has made all his sacrifices worthwhile. "This feels so impossible that I've finally accomplished what I've dreamed of since I was little," said an emotional Su.
Over the past four years, Su has combined his talent with hard work to produce one of the swiftest rises to prominence the sport has ever seen. Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone's lips at the venue s Olympic debut — drawing the whole nation's attention to the sport he loves.
"The biggest motivation (动力) for me is my love for snowboarding," Su said, when asked about the secret to his success. "In snowboarding, I feel like I can show my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it's always a joyful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the sport."
Su, a former child actor who featured in action movies, said the Olympic gold will encourage him to seek for more breakthroughs — even beyond his athletic career.
"I enjoy snowboarding just as much as I enjoy acting," said Su, who turns 18 on Friday. "I think I still have a lot of possibilities to explore in my future career either in snowboarding or in acting. But now I just want to enjoy the moment and celebrate it as the best possible birthday gift."

11、I've spent my entire life as a younger sister. My older sister was the tall one, the academically1 one, and the soccer prodigy (神童). People saw me as a2 version of my sister. Everyone loved her and I wanted to be her. Without3 I'm different from my sister, I4 put myself in her wings. I allowed my identity to be connected to hers. I was comfortable there.
In high school she was the senior soccer captain; I was the freshman with something to5. But our coach made it clear that I was not proving I6 to be on the field in my own right. Instead I was proving I could be as good as my7. During this time, I felt trapped because we were two different people. When she graduated, I hoped the comparisons would8. That didn't happen.
Teachers and friends kept asking me if I was9 for my sister's school, or planning on playing soccer with her. At this point, I realized I had this immense (巨大的) amount of10 on me to pursue things I knew I did not want. 12、We all have to make decisions all the time, and we have many choices, ranging from tiny issues to important ones. That means the skill of good decision-making counts a lot. If you would like to improve your skill of decision making, here are four suggestions for you.
Don't expect to have it all.
Decisions force you to close the door on other possibilities. And there will be paths not taken, careers not chosen, to name a few. You can imagine some "what if" situations if you must, but do not let them take up too much space in your brain.
It's often good to think through your decisions. But don't overdo it. Research can reach a point where returns begin to reduce, which makes it confusing more than clear. Many good decisions can be made based as much on intuition (直觉) as on careful analysis of endless data.
Don't delay making decisions.
Yes, there is a time to put off making a decision. Perhaps you need more information. Or it's likely that you wait for a less stressful time. Just don't wait so long that the decision is made by your own indecisiveness (犹豫不决).
Don't be hard on yourself.
You decide to go on a voyage. You choose an expensive liner (邮轮). Everything should work out just right. Only you didn't expect an insect that ran around on the ship, making you and your family sick for five days. But please remember it is unavoidable sometimes.
A. Don't spend too much time thinking.
B. Don't rely on emotion to make decisions.
C. It is an important source of information.
D. You may regret making such a stupid decision.
E. You can't order every delicious dish on the menu.
F. Maybe you wish to turn to your parents for advice.
G. Unfortunately, people often find it hard to make decisions.

13、A new study suggests that mindfulness education — lessons on techniques to calm the mind and body — can reduce the negative effects of stress and increase students' ability to stay engaged, helping them stay on track academically and avoid behavior problems.
After finding that students who self-reported mindful habits performed better on tests and had higher grades, researchers from the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University wanted to know if school-based mindfulness training could help more students reap similar benefits.
They designed a study focusing on sixth-graders in a Boston school. The study showed that sixth-graders who participated in an eight-week mindfulness were less stressed out than their classmates who hadn't. Practicing mindfulness had helped improve the ability to focus in the moment, expanding students' capacity to learn and regulate their emotions.
Four times a week, instructors from Calmer Choice, a Massachusetts nonprofit specializing in mindfulness education, taught the group techniques and led them through practices, like focusing on a rock for a minute, then discussing when their mind wandered and refocused on the rock. Another group of sixth-graders took computer coding during that time instead. The students were randomly assigned between the groups.
At the end of the eight weeks, the mindfulness group reported being less stressed than they had been before the mindfulness education, and better able to practice self-control. And their amygdalae, the part of the brain that controls emotion, responded less to pictures of fearful faces than they did prior to the mindfulness work, suggesting their brains were less sensitive to negative stimuli, or, in other words, that they were less likely to get stressed out and lose focus. The group who attended coding classes didn't see the same benefits.
The findings suggest that the mindfulness instruction helped boost students' attention skills, as well as develop coping mechanisms for stress. The researchers believe it could be especially useful for schools to support students suffering from severe mental damage and other adversities that trigger stress in the body, hurting students' ability to succeed.
(1)、What was the purpose of the study?A、To examine the techniques for practicing mindfulness. B、To study the effects of group mindfulness training on students. C、To see how students help themselves to perform better on tests. D、To understand why mindfulness training calms the mind and body.(2)、How was the study conducted?A、By listing benefits of mindfulness education. B、By scanning the brain to see how it controls emotions. C、By teaching different students different mindfulness skills. D、By comparing two groups of students attending different classes.(3)、What change took place after the students practiced mindfulness work?A、They felt easier to stay focused. B、They were better at computer coding. C、Their mind was wandering more actively. D、Their brains were more aware of negativity.(4)、Who are the most possible target readers of the passage?A、Stressful parents. B、Mindful instructors. C、Emotional students. D、School educators. -
14、As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she found herself greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins (企鹅) longing to say hello. These gentle, lovely gatekeepers welcomed her and kick-started what was to be a trip Ginni would never forget.
Ever since her childhood, Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel. Throughout her career (职业) as a professional dancer, she toured in the UK, but always longed to explore further. When she retired from dancing and her sons eventually flew the nest, she decided it was time to take the plunge.
After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel the world, eventually getting work teaching English in Japan and Chile. And it was in Chile she discovered she could get last-minute cheap deals on ships going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. "From seeing the wildlife to witnessing sunrises, the whole experience was amazing. Antarctica left an impression on me that no other place has," Ginni says. "I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale; it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the operatic sounds it was making underwater."
The realization that this is a precious land, to be respected by humans, was one of the biggest things that hit home to Ginni.

It was a beautiful sunny day when the moving van pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture.
Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it - even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes scattered on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain.
The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.
He went to inspect (检查) and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. "We can have someone fix it," Mindy said. "I'll grab a bucket to catch the water for now."
A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.
"Don't worry. We can take care of that!" Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. "Let's go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better."
Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay.
"What do we do now?" Mindy asked.
Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise. There was a knock at the door.
