Tetraplegic paticnts (those who can't move their upper or lower body) are prisoners of their own bodies. Now a robot arm is to help them interact with their world. This research was completed by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL). Professor Aude Billard and Jose del R. Millan worked together to create a computer program that can control a robot using electrical signals from a patient's brain.

 First, the user wears an EEG cap to have their electrical signals inside their brain scanned(扫 描)effectively, which are then interpreted by the machine-learning algorithm (算法).The computer then sends signals to the robot arm to determine how it moves. As the robot arm performs a motion,the algorithm is looking to get feedback from the user when it makes a mistake: perhaps it moved too fast, or too violently. The end goal is that the robot can learn the right movements for a task in a given context. For example, you might want the arm to use a bit of force to throw a paper ball, but you might want it to be gentler when putting glass bottles.

In the team's research, they trained the robot arm to pick up a glass. The arm would move towards the glass and the user's brain would decide if they felt it was too close or too far away. The process is repeated until the robot understands the optimal route for the individual's preference - not too close to be a risk but not so far away to waste movement.

"Training an algorithm to read brain waves in a consistent fashion was the most challenging part, because the brain is not only focused on the hand but also processing many other things," said Millan. "This means our algorithm will never be 100 % accurate."

 The researchers hope to eventually use their algorithm to control wheelchairs, which would allow people in wheelchairs to have greater control over their movements, speeds and general safety. However, this does require consistency over time to the algorithm.

"Half the park is after dark" is more than a clever saying; it's a way of life — especially for TylerNordgren. He's an artist, astronomer and national park lover who invented the expression and illustrated (加插图) the accompanying poster(海报) series for the national parks. The printed pictures show the midnight blue sky with the vastness (浩瀚）of the Milky Way. They usually picture a star-lit silhouette (轮廓) of one of the park's driving attractions, and most posters will mention "See the Milky Way" or "Half the Park Is After Dark."

"Think about all the history and all the people who ever looked up at the stars and wondered about the universe. That's something that we no longer have today," says Nordgren. "Get out into nature, and see the universe beyond our own atmosphere. And when you see that, you feel awe ( 敬畏 )," says Nordgren. According to a 2018 study, experiencing awe can increase feelings of humility( 谦逊 ) — making one kinder, more modest and more positive. One can feel this sense of awe after hiking a mountain or seeing the Milky Way.

Imagine experiencing a national park after dark. As the sun goes down, the park empties. Many park visitors return to their campsites or hotels, and now the park is quiet and peaceful. "This is a great time to experience some of the park's best features," Nordgren says. "Your eyes will most likely adjust, but bringing a flashlight is always a good idea. It's always wise to make sure you're not hiking near cliffs(峭壁) in the dark and be aware of what sort of wildlife may be in the park."

One of the reasons why we preserve historic places is that they can continue to tell the stories of our history for the next generation. But what if the next generation doesn't understand the value and significance of these places? Here are four things to do with kids in the classroom or at home to get them involved in and excited about historic preservation.

Talk to the neighbours. Encourage kids to talk to the neighbours who have lived on their street for a longtime. Find out what they remember about living there and about the people who have moved on. Maybe they have old photographs of how the street and houses used to look. Oral (口述的) histories are an invaluable resource and provide a link to the places of our past.

Visit a historic site. Take kids to visit a historic site in your area, or stop by the local historical society or museum. You can often find an original map of the surrounding area at the historical society or museum. Make a project out of comparing old maps to today's roads and neighbourhoods.What has stayed the same?

Lining up to board a plane has become a clear indicator of how our society has commodified (使商品化) the very act of waiting. The more you pay, the sooner you can get on the plane. It's not just airlines; it's also museums, online purchases and amusement parks where VIP status can help you avoid lines. When did the act of waiting get such bad fame?

The very act of waiting can actually enhance our appreciation of something. We enjoy the anticipation like a child waiting for Christmas or summer vacation. Perhaps the person waiting in line to see their favorite singer perform in concert favors the night more because of the time invested in getting into the venue.

But the capacity to wait is a foundational part of a civilized society and thus an important skill to have. If we lose our ability to stand in line or wait our turn, we suffer from the stress of a world on steroids(类固醇). If we label people who wait as "losers", we release greatly primitive urges to grab what's ours at any cost with no concern about those we leave behind. We see the people in line as "others", not like us, and that dehumanization is dangerous.

America has long been crazy about weight loss. New diets continue to come up; diet and exercise apps are on the rise. It's no wonder more people are on diets now than were a decade ago and 4 out of 10 Americans consider themselves to be overweight.

While healthy eating and exercise are important to the length and quality of life, too many people think of weight loss pills as a shorter path to removing extra pounds instead of as a sometimes-useful tool for the individuals they've been approved for. There are actually many dangers connected with weight loss pills and it is not recommended that they be taken without seeking advice from the doctor.

Geothermal (地热的) power generation is one of our most stable renewable energy resources. Heat generated below the Earth's surface can provide an almost unlimited supply to power and heat homes. And while geothermal electricity only accounts for around one percent of global generation, that is set to at least triple by 2050.

The Geysers in California is the world's largest geothermal electricity complex. It produces enough electricity from its 18 power plants for 725,000 homes, totaling 20 percent of the state's renewable energy. Superheated "dry steam" is channeled from a large sandstone reservoir heated by a large magma chamber (岩浆房) more than four miles beneath the surface.

Heat is captured from its passage through the rock and the heated water converts into electricity. Cooled water is then recycled and pumped back to gather more heat. EGS (enhanced geothermal systems) technologies will open up many more sites for geothermal energy. "You can effectively put a power plant anywhere," said Will Pettit, director of the Geothermal Resources Council. "All you have to do is drill deep enough and you will find hot rock." 

Most geothermal plants actually use a flash steam technique, where hot water (at 360F or 180C) is drawn up, passed into lower pressure tanks and flashed into steam to power a turbine (涡轮机). Binary cycle (双元循环) plants are the growth technology because they can operate at lower water temperatures and more diverse geographical locations. They use moderately hot water to heat a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point—as low as 135F—to drive turbines.

Geothermal plants already emit 11 times less carbon dioxide per unit of electricity than the average US coal power plant. They can also operate 24 hours a day to provide a solid base load for homes and businesses.

There are drawbacks too. Seismic activity around drilling wells is a factor. High investment costs are another. But the US government is backing the sector with multi-million dollar funds to push forward advanced EGS research. Geothermal energy is set to play a big part in the low-carbon electricity future.

Lisa Sweeney is a 32-year-old mail carrier in Staten Island, New York. Four months ago, she noticed that something wasn't right at one of the homes on her rote. It was her quick action that made all the difference.

A group of children in Zimbabwe, a country in southeast Africa, are closely following a series of martial arts(武术) movements (perform) in a slow and focused manner accompanied by deep breathing,their eyes fixed on their Chinese tai chi master.

Actually, group of tai chi enthusiasts are enjoying the power of concentration under the guidance of their instructor, 45-yeat-old Zhu Wei,  is the captain of the Chinese medical team in Zimbabwe.

"Tai chi increases focus and makes students, from school children to college students, (concentrate)on studies." he says.

Tai chi is a mind-body exercise rooted in multiple Chinese traditions, including martial arts, (tradition) Chinese medicine and philosophy. It emphasizes a mind-body connection  (use) gentle movements, meditation(冥想) and deep breathing.

Martial arts (recognize) as a fitness practice, with a wide range of health benefits. Zhu says tai chi provides mental health benefits like improved focus, as well as decreased stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, it can improve a (child) confidence and physical strength.

Organizer of the children's events Abraham Matuka says keeping youngsters busy and entertained with activities like tai chi (help) meet challenges of drug and other teenager crimes in low-income townships.

My passion has always been caring for animals. That's why I1 at Bidcawee. Bideawee is a shelter(收容所) for cats and dogs, where all the animals are equally 2 . Whether the cat or the dog stays for a day or years, each one has a special place in my heart.

Most of the shelter dogs are so gentle and friendly that they cause me to wonder why no one has taken them3 yet. The others need a bit of 4 and love to warm up, but once they 5 you, you fall in love with them. One of my favorites is a dog called Lola. She always bar k at strangers. However, once she sees you often and gets 6 around you, she greets you with her tail wagging(摇摆), side to side.
