It would be a really10 stew if you just put cucumbers in there. But if you11 them with eggs or some pork, then you make this wonderful thing. And all these different people come together to make this wonderful thing called our world".

  • 4、At first glance (扫视), a name seems a basic part of one's identity; yet its power in shaping identity is undeniable. " So it serves as the very basis of one's self-conception, especially in relation to others," said Professor David Zhu from Arizona State University. It carries more weight than imagined, from how we relate to the world around us to our personal development.

In one example, the names Elizabeth and Misty were studied. Those called Elizabeth came across as warm and competent, while Mistys were seen as low on both of these traits (特性). Such viewpoints may lead to real-world consequences, potentially affecting everything from job applications to dating.

Interestingly, names may also shape our personalities. Zhu's research found that CEOs with unique names often pursued more distinctive business strategies. "CEOs with a unique name tend to develop a self-conception of being different from peers (同辈), motivating them to pursue untraditional strategies," Zhu explained.

Names may also lead to life choices. People with unique names were viewed as better suited to creative jobs, according to Psychology Today. They discovered Chinese film directors with distinctive names received higher ratings for their work. This suggests that accepting the uniqueness of names could potentially unlock creative potential. People with more common names may experience greater social acceptance and likability in the short term.

As both unique names and common names have their advantages, perhaps finding the middle road is a solution when naming a child. But meanwhile, also call the child by a special and unique nickname. Anyway, your name is your story — make it a great one!

    A. Names may influence how others view us.

    B. Actually, common names also have their advantages.

    C. Choosing the best name is of importance, according to Zhu.

    D. People with unique names might develop a stronger sense of individuality.

    E. A name is used to identify an individual and communicate with the individual.

    F. Zhu recommends giving a child a more common name to get social acceptance.

    G. Whether your name is common or rare, it is an important part of your identity.

  • 5、Awe experiences typically involve the perception of something incredibly vast or powerful. These are often encounters with nature--such as looking at a broad view of mountains or up at the billions of stars in the night sky. "Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that goes beyond your understanding of the world," said Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley.

At the University of Chicago's Human Nature and Potentials Lab, research has shown that children over the age of four can perceive and respond to awe-inspiring experiences. This early sense of awe influences their motivation for learning and self-perception. When exposed to awe-inspiring visuals, such as vast natural scenes or natural disasters, children feel a "small self" compared to their feelings after viewing everyday nature imagery, which makes them more motivated to explore things that interest them and to understand things in the world that they hadn't learned much about yet.

While awe is a highly personal experience, evidence suggests that it has significant social effects. In one experiment, participants who were asked to stand staring at tall trees for a minute were more likely to help others than those who looked at a building, suggesting that being in an awe-inspiring environment increases morality and reduces feelings of self-centeredness.

"This is especially critical in the age of social media," said Dr. Keltner. "We are at this cultural moment of self-center, criticism, and entitlement (优越感); awe gets us out of that. It does this by helping us get out of our own heads and realize our place in the larger context, our communities," he explained. "Might awe cause people to become more invested in the greater good, giving more to charity, volunteering to help others, or doing more to reduce their impact on the environment? Our research would suggest that the answer is yes."

(1)、What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A、The ways of understanding nature. B、The definition of awe experiences. C、The significance of awe experiences. D、The effect of nature on human perception.
(2)、What do we know about children who experience awe?
A、They may lose confidence in themselves. B、They tend to perform better in their studies. C、They will know more about natural disasters. D、They are more interested in exploring the world.
(3)、What can be inferred about awe according to Dr. Keltner?
A、It helps people develop critical thinking. B、It can improve people's physical health. C、It encourages people to reflect on our culture. D、It has a positive impact on people's behavior.
(4)、Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A、Awe Perception in Early Childhood. B、Awe's Role in the Age of Social Media. C、The Power of Awe Drives Us Out of Self-center. D、Awe-Inspiring Experiences Push People to Learn.
  • 6、A team of AI researchers at Microsoft, working with colleagues from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has used AI to develop a battery that uses less lithium (锂).

Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries have become the industry standard for electronic devices and electric vehicles and are expected to play a major role in the conversion to green power. But lithium is expensive, which has led multiple teams across the globe to look for alternatives. In this new effort, the research team looked for ways to reduce the amount of lithium used in batteries.

This would normally take a long time because of the detailed approach required. To reduce the workload and the time needed to process millions of alternatives, the researchers turned to AI. Noting that AI applications are good at using massive amounts of data to learn how to do things, the researchers designed one that could study millions of materials that might be added to a lithium battery to replace some amount of the lithium and test the results for factors such as stability and how a battery using a given material would behave.

Using this approach, the research team reduced the list of possible alternatives to just a few hundred possibilities. They then turned to materials scientists at PNNL for advice on how to reduce the possibilities even further. The scientists suggested adding more specific screening criteria and more elimination rounds. After adopting that advice, the team arrived at a promising alternative and an approach that involved replacing approximately half of the lithium atoms in a battery with sodium (钠) atoms.

After using the new approach to build a working battery, the researchers found it had lower conductivity than was needed — but they also believe that there is room for improvement. They plan to continue working on the approach and the process they used to find their solution, which they suggest could eventually solve other types of material processing problems.

(1)、Why did the research team want to develop a battery that uses less lithium?
A、To reduce carbon emissions. B、To meet the industry standard. C、To decrease the cost of a battery. D、To generate electricity efficiently.
(2)、What do the underlined words "this approach" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A、Using AI to find possible materials. B、Adding other materials to a battery. C、Developing an application to collect data. D、Replacing lithium in a battery with sodium.
(3)、How did the research team finally find a promising alternative?
A、By seeking funding from PNNL. B、By asking experts for advice. C、By turning to Microsoft for help. D、By cooperating with other scientists.
(4)、What do the researchers think of the approach?
A、Effective and workable. B、Complex and impractical. C、Challenging and demanding. D、Innovative and groundbreaking.
