"The academic struggle for students is what pushes them to become better writers, thinkers and doers. Like most positive outcomes in life, the important part is the journey," says Mark, a college professor. He warns that soon, earning college degrees without AI will seem as old as payphones — and students will suffer for it.

Research backs up his concern. For example, a June 2023 study found that heavy AI use is linked to student laziness caused by reduced decision-making. Scientists tracked 105 people for a week and discovered something remarkable about human behavior: almost 90% of daily actions happen automatically (自动地). The research used real-time tracking to measure exactly how much of everyday life operates on "autopilot". Over seven days, participants received text messages six times daily. They were asked to share what they were doing and whether it required conscious (有意识的) thought.

The results showed that 88% of daily actions were done out of habit. The study differentiated two types of automatic behavior. Habitual execution happens when you perform an action smoothly without much thinking about how to do it, such as brushing your teeth or driving a familiar route. Habitual instigation, on the other hand, occurs when environment automatically leads you to do something, like reaching for your phone when you hear a notification.

While people believe they make careful decisions, most of their repeated actions are actually done automatically, driven by habit. Surprisingly, the researchers found that personal characteristics like age, gender, and marriage had no significant influence on how automatically people behaved.

The findings can be helpful for anyone trying to change their behavior, from breaking bad habits to building good ones. Since most behaviors already operate automatically, the key may be redirecting existing habit patterns rather than fighting them entirely. Therefore, we should use this to our advantage. For example, we can place our trainers by the door right after meals to encourage a post-dinner walk. Lasting change comes from recognizing and replacing bad habits with good ones.

France aims to bring more foreign students to its universities by offering more classes taught in English.
