2、Five years ago, I was a trail ride leader at a holiday farm in Victoria. My favourite horse was a warmblood called Holly, a chestnut mare. Aged seven, she was1, sweet-natured and well-trained; the only2 with Holly was her vivid imagination. I was constantly astonished by Holly's reaction to being3 by rabbits, the wind or even shadows — sometimes her own shadow!
One day, as we headed back from a ride on the beach, Holly and I were4 he way over the hilly area. When we got to one particularly long, steep hill, Holly began to twitch (抽动) her ears and step in place. So, when she proceeding to sniff (嗅) and gave all the5 that she believed the ‘horse-eating monsters' were close, I became a little worried.
At the bottom of the hill as we rounded a corner, Holly6 with caution, and so I followed her gaze to the path ahead. There,7 itself in the middle of the track, was a brown8. This time it was my9 to get scared; I was on a nervous horse, with a group of eight inexperienced pre-teen riders. Unexpectedly, Holly was firmly10, ears forward. With the snake in her sight, she was no longer worried.
I have heard that horses have a better sense of11 than dogs. I hadn't seen it demonstrated (展现) before that moment.12, while we waited in reality for just a second or two — but for what felt like a century—the snake awoke and glided calmly off into the bush.
Holly then13, guiding the horses with caution and care. She had been alert to danger because she was14 for the safety of us all. Following in the serious footsteps of their lead mare, not one of the other horses showed any fear, not a single horse went wrong, and none of us got15.

3、A gym membership can be nice. All you need is a little bit of time and space at home for yourself. But before everything, you need to create an at-home fitness routine.
Spend 5 to 10 minutes warming up before every workout. Not sure what to do? Try jumping jacks, leg or arm circles, or even dancing. Just get your blood pumping. Do a progressive aerobic (有氧的) activity that uses the same muscles you want to work out.
Do strength training twice a week to build muscles. Strength training, also called resistance training, makes you stronger and builds endurance (忍耐力). This helps you do a harder workout every time you exercise.
You might be eager to just stop your workout when you've finished your last set of activity, but take a few minutes to do low-intensity exercises that lower your heart rate. You might drop your run into a walk or slow down your cycling, for instance.
Set achievable goals that you can break into smaller tasks. It's one thing to say you want to get fit, but that means something different for everyone. It should be specific, realistic, and meaningful. Then, break down the goal into small, actionable steps so it feels like you're making progress regularly.
A. After all, we work out to build our muscles.
B. Equipment is the key to carrying out a workout plan.
C. But you don't have to have one to get into great shape.
D. For instance, slowly jog if you are going for a longer run.
E. Spend five to ten minutes cooling down after each workout.
F. Figure out what you plan to achieve and make that your goal.
G. Try to do exercises that work many parts of your body and make you feel stronger.

4、Otaku dance, also known as "Zhaiwu" in Chinese, has emerged as a unique and popular form of dance in recent years, especially among young people. It is often performed by individuals in their own homes or small spaces and then shared on various online platforms.
The origin of otaku dance can be traced back to Japanese pop culture. It combines elements of anime, manga, and J-pop music, with dancers imitating the movements and styles of anime characters or creating their own unique choreography inspired by Japanese pop culture. These dances are usually characterized by their energetic and lively movements, as well as their colorful and sometimes exaggerated costumes, which are designed to attract attention and express the individuality of the dancers
One of the man reasons for the popularity of otaku dance is the rise of the internet and social media. Online platforms such as Bilibili, TikTok, and You Tube have provided a convenient and accessible space for otaku dancers to showcase their works and connect with like-minded people. Through these platforms, dancers can gain a large number of fans and followers, and their videos can be easily shared and spread which further promotes the popularity of otaku dance.
Moreover, otaku dance offers a way for young people to express themselves and release their creativity. In a society where individuality is highly valued, otaku dance allows dancers to break free from traditional dance forms and create their own unique styles. It also provides a sense of community and belonging, as dancers can interact with each other, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
However, otaku dance also faces some challenges and controversies. Some people may view it as a form of "otaku" culture that is too niche or even "weird" and may not understand or appreciate its value. Additionally, there may be concerns about the potential negative impacts of excessive focus on online popularity and the pursuit of likes and views, which could lead to a lack of authenticity and depth in the dance itself.
Despite these challenges, otaku dance continues to thrive and evolve. With the continuous development of technology and the increasing acceptance of diverse cultures, it is likely to gain even more popularity and recognition in the future, attracting more and more young people to join in and explore this unique form of dance.

6、One day in elementary school, a friend asked me "What are you eating?" as she glanced at my lunchbox. "It smells," she said, nose crinkled.
I was eating bhindi roti, my favorite Indian snack, which my mom had packed for me. But feeling embarrassed for having a "smelly" lunch and wanting to fit in, I quietly shut my lunchbox. That day, I went hungry.
Most days after that, lunchtime at school felt like a battle. If I wasn't trying to hide my lunch or sneak quick bites when no one was looking, I'd insist on bringing in the same peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich as the other kids. My mom, who didn't grow up eating American food, tried her best, but the sandwiches never looked, or tasted, as good as the food Idevoured at home.
I didn't know that I wasn't alone. Many kids with immigrant parents encounter (遭遇) what's known as "the lunchbox moment" at school: the experience of being judged for bringing in food considered culturally different and so being made to feel like an outsider.
For this article, I talked with kids who could relate. But they also surprised me: They dealt with "the lunchbox moment" differently than I did. For example, Satya Singh, 6, who takes her mom's Indian cooking to lunch most days, told me that one day a classmate said that her aloo, or potatoes, looked like poop. Another time, someone said that the dal, or lentils, looked like "throw up". The next day, Satya brought enough dal to share with her entire class — and they loved it. From then on, she says, "My teacher at school made a rule: Don't yuck someone's yum."
Looking back, I wish I'd had the wisdom of Satya and offered my friend a bite of my lunch, or just told her it was delicious — especially because now, as an adult, I see that Indian food is universally loved by my friends. Some even try to cook Indian lentils or chickpeas at home! And when I'm hungry, guess what? I miss my mom's bhindi roti and her care in making it for me. Food is an expression of culture, tradition, family and love. And that's something to celebrate, not hide.
(1)、Why did the writer go hungry one day in elementary school?A、She did like her smelly lunch. B、Her classmates ate up her bhindi roti. C、Her mom didn't prepare lunch for her. D、She skipped her lunch to fit in with others.(2)、The word "devoured" in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.A、cooked B、tasted C、ate quickly and eagerly D、prepared(3)、What does the author want to tell us?A、Food is something to celebrate, not hide. B、Never should you yuck someone's yum in any case. C、Indian food is delicious and universally appreciated. D、The lunchbox moment is when one can taste different foods. -

Nancy often saw a lady in the building. Usually the lady went to the gym first and then headed to the spa. Later, she'd come out dressed like a manager. One day, the woman took her kid with her. The little boy was no more than eight years old and didn't look happy to be there with his mom.
"Henry, come on. I have to go to the gym now and hurry to get to work on time later," the mother said in a rush.
The boy protested (反对) with a sad voice,"What am I going to do while you're working out?" "Just sit still and read your book in the waiting area," the mother replied.
"Can you at least buy me some candy? You promised earlier," the boy complained. "I don't have time right now. Please hurry inside," the mother answered.
Then the mother took the son's hand and rushed into the gym. Nancy witnessed this all and was reminded of her own similar busy life in the past. She was once also a young busy woman. Her personal and work-related matters always came first in her life. She failed to spare enough time for her son and attach enough importance to his wishes. When she realized her problems, it was too late. Her son lost his life in an accident, leaving her with deep sadness and regret. To make matters worse, her company went bankrupt (破产) soon after.

In the past few years, I have found that mental illness has been a term largely avoided in conversation, and this has a bad impact on those depression, anxiety and other mental diseases. What's worse, the topic of mental illness when the news draws our attention to it, but then the conversation quiets until the next tragedy (悲剧) happens.
It's time for the conversation to continue. Instead of waiting for the next tragedy, we need to be open about mental health and about the struggles that come with mental illness and treatment. We need to develop an environment where people feel comfortable to seek the help they need instead of concealing (掩盖) it.
It took a long time, but I am now open about my anxiety and depression. I am open about my taking medicine to treat my mental illness. I am open about the struggle of finding the that works. I encourage everyone to do the same. Be and open with your conversations about mental health. The more comfortable people are with these conversations, the easier it will be for the conversation to continue. A continued conversation will more ideas on treatment and more ideas on how to those who need it.
We have the ability to help those we love and break the shame around mental illness. We should change the idea that it's something that needs to be cured people of. Mental illness can actually affect anyone, impacting one every four people.
So,, let's keep the conversation about mental health and mental illness open. Be sure to check up on your friends, and be open about the importance of mental health. 13、Greece has criticized the United Kingdom for canceling (取消) a planned meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, apparently so that Sunak could avoid talking about ancient artefacts (历史文物) that Greece says were taken illegally. Mitsotakis and Sunak were set to meet on Tuesday, but Sunak canceled it on Monday, reportedly after learning that Mitsotakis planned to talk about the Parthenon sculptures.
The UK government initially believed Mitsotakis would not talk about the sculptures, which are now in the British Museum. The sculptures were once part of the Parthenon in the Greek capital Athens. The row (纠纷) became more serious after Mitsotakis told the BBC on Sunday the UK's offer to store some of the sculptures in London and some in Athens was akin to cutting the Mona Lisa in two. He also said the sculptures had been essentially stolen.
Mitsotakis said he was deeply disappointed by the abrupt cancellation of the meeting. "Those who firmly believe in the correctness and justice of their positions are never hesitant to engage in constructive argument and debate," he was quoted by The Associated Press as saying. The BBC reported that sources in the Greek government were puzzled and annoyed by the meeting cancellation.
Greece has long criticized the way in which the Parthenon sculptures ended up in London, after they were bought by British diplomat Lord Elgin and shipped to the UK between 1801 and 1804. Because the two nations disagree on the legality of the deal and have firm positions, they have tended to avoid talking about the issue during high-level diplomatic meetings.
The UK's Transport Secretary Mark Harper said on the BBC's Breakfast program on Tuesday that it was regretful that the prime ministers would not meet during Mitsotakis'UK visit. He said Mitsotakis had been offered the chance to meet instead the UK's deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, but he had refused the meeting. "The views of Greece on the Parthenon sculptures are well known," Mitsotakis was quoted by The Guardian as saying. "I had hoped to have the opportunity to discuss them with UK Prime Minister along with other international challenges. " The UK's opposition Labour Party criticized Sunak for canceling the meeting and said his behavior appeared disrespectful.

14、Most parents will remember their little ones grasping their leg or being unwilling to speak to someone new. But when does this stop being a natural part of a child's growing up and become something to worry about?
Here, Heidi Gazelle, a senior lecturer in developmental psychology from the University of Melbourne, explains how shyness is of more concern if it is persistent (持续的) rather than temporary.
Shyness with other children is of more concern than shyness with adults. It is common for children to be on the alert for adults, particularly men, but less common for children around their own age.
Children who engage in very little social interaction in comparison to children of their age are missing out on these important cumulative (积累的) learning experiences. As a result, their social cognition (认知), social skills and sense of self may be less mature than those of other children around their age.
Being excluded and bullied is damaging children's emotional health and sense of self, especially when these conditions persist over time. Children need help from adults to stop exclusion and being bullied by other children. When parents become aware that their child is being excluded or bullied by other children at a childcare center or a school, they should contact the childcare center or school on their child's behalf.
Shyness is of concern if it interferes with your child's or family's routines or activities, or if your child often appears miserable or complains of being lonely. For instance, if shyness prevents your child from attending other children's birthday parties or school, or prevents your family from visiting friends, then you should consider seeking help from a child psychologist.
If a child is upset about a problem with a friend, parents can encourage the child to try to resolve the problem in a way that preserves the friendship, instead of ending the friendship, as well as encourage the child to develop other friendships.

15、55-year-old Rob Kenney, who grew up without a father, has been doing his part to make a difference in the lives of kids today.
He created a YouTube channel, called Dad, How Do I, which aims to give youths the valuable lessons a father is meant to give. Launched only two months ago, his channel already has more than two million subscribers (订阅者). Rob teaches children and adults, many of whom are also without a dad, basic skills such as how to tie a tie, how to cook meals, how to repair a lamp and many more.
"I didn't start this to make money," Rob told his viewers. "I just thought I was going to help a few people... 30 or 40 subscribers... but it's turned into a way more than that. And please don't think I am only aiming this at young men. It is for anybody who feels that they need to learn something."
Now that his channel has had such huge unexpected success, Rob plans to give his earnings to a number of international charities.
Many viewers have been touched by the warm words Rob shares in his videos. Such simple words, like "I love you", "You've done a good job" and "I'm proud of you," can have a deep impact on many children, even some adults. He starts each video with an enthusiastic "Hey, kids!" — but Keiha Danaher said that she was a 33-year-old woman, and she answered back crying, saying, "Hi, dad!"
Rob's childhood story makes him a role for the kids who watch his channel. By the age of 14, his parents had divorced. He had to move in with his elder brother and learn from the tough life experiences without parents in his life. But that didn't prevent him from being a good father to his children. His experience shows his viewers that there is always opportunity in the face of difficulties.

B、Subscribers are mainly made up of poor people. C、The number of subscribers is larger than Rob expected. D、Rob guesses there won't be more people to subscribe his channel.(3)、What does Rob plan to do in the future?A、Make his videos more entertaining and instructive. B、Help more children improve their intelligence. C、Let more people have sympathy for him. D、Donate the money he earns to charities.(4)、Why are the viewers moved by what Rob shares in his video?A、They think Rob is just like their real father to take care of them.
