3、When I was a little boy, I loved drawing. I1 presented a new picture to my mother a few times a day at least. She would2 them up on the refrigerator as I'm sure all parents do, but she quickly3 space. When that happened, she would ask me to4 which picture we would remove to make room for the5 one. She would then take the removed picture and6 me she would put it somewhere safe — a great7 to tell little kids so they didn't suspect their drawing was destined (注定) for the trash can.
Decades later, my mother passed away from cancer, and I was8 for cleaning her home to prepare it to be sold. As I was9 the things in her room, I found a box stuffed full of paper. It contained every one of the10 I'd created as a kid, separated into folders based on how11 I was when I drew it. It was located near her bed table and had every sign of being12 on a regular basis. She really had saved and13 my terrible drawings all these years.
I'm a fully-grown, strong military man who never shows14. Yet holding my own six-year-old scribblings in my hands, I ended up15 my heart out in my mother's room.

4、Hiking is a fun way to get some fresh air and exercise. Here are a few simple tips to make sure your next hiking trip is both safe and enjoyable.
Hike with at least one other person. Not only is hiking more fun with a friend, it is also safer. If you decide to hike alone, make sure that you let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back. This way, if you get lost or injured, someone will know where to look for you and when to send help.
Have plenty of water. Even if you are only going for a short hike, it is important to have lots of water on hand so that you avoid dehydration (脱水). Plan to bring one liter of water per person per hour of hiking. So make sure to drink your water frequently, even if you are not very thirsty.
Wear correct kinds of clothing. You should wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and thick socks. Your clothing should be comfortable and easy to move around in. Clothing that is too loose might catch on rocks or branches.
If you have not exercised in a very long time, do not try to go on an 8-mile hike up a mountain on the hottest day of the year, Instead, you should start gradually. First, go for regular walks in your neighborhood. Next, you should try to find places to walk on steep hills or rocky soil.
A. Don't take a too long trip at a time.
B. Make sure that your body is prepared.
C. You can begin to dehydrate before you even realize it.
D. If you get injured, your friend will be able to go and get help.
E. But clothing that is too tight might become uncomfortable as you walk.
F. If you are going on a long hike, you might want to bring an extra pair of socks just in case.
G. With enough practice, you will be able to take longer hikes across more challenging landscapes.

5、Body image affects women and men all around the world, In the new study carried out by psychologists at Durham University, the team set out to understand how body appreciation varies between women from different cultures.
"Most researches around body appreciation to date has focused on younger white Western women," said Louise Hanson, who led the study. "We wanted to expand the scope and include older women and other cultures as these groups have historically been not noticed."
A total of 1,186 women aged 18-80 were enlisted from six countries — four Western countries (Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US), as well as China and Nigeria. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires to understand more about their own sense of body appreciation and the pressures they experience around body image from family, peers and the media.
The results showed that all three groups had relatively stable body appreciation across ages. However, there were great cultural differences.
White Western women were found to experience much higher pressure from the media to meet thin or athletic body standards across their lifespan. This pressure did decrease with age, but even at its lowest, it was still higher than that for the other ethnic groups.
Black Nigerian women did not display a strong pressure towards a thin or athletic build and reported higher levels of body appreciation and far less media pressure regarding body image. However, they also reported higher levels of appearance pressure from peers, which reduced with age.
Meanwhile, Chinese women mostly continued to favor a thin body type across all ages. They reported the highest ongoing family and peer pressure around body image, but media-related pressure was less and decreased with age.
The researchers hope that their findings can encourage more cross-cultural studies to better understand the cultural dynamics that impact on body appreciation.
(1)、How does Louise Hanson's research differ from previous ones?A、It studies how body image affects the female. B、It has a wider variety of participants. C、It focuses on younger white Western women. D、It explores the influence of social media on body image.(2)、How did the researchers carry out the study?A、By conducting an experiment. B、By comparing different studies. C、By collecting data. D、By providing a set of questions.(3)、What can we learn from the research findings?A、Women from all six countries wish to be thin. B、Black Nigerian women suffer media pressure most. C、Body image pressure drops with age in all cultures. D、Chinese women have the highest media-related pressure.(4)、What's the purpose of the research?A、To better understand the impact of body appreciation on women. B、To display the differences between western culture and other cultures. C、To know more about cultural influences on body appreciation. D、To reveal the pressures that women in different countries suffer. -
6、Sorry rabbits, but giant tortoises are still winning the race of life by treating it like a marathon and taking each step slow and steady. Recently, the world's oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has turned 191 years old. This extends his title of the oldest living land animal by another year.
Unofficially, there have been claims of older tortoises, including one believed to have been 255 years old when it died in 2006. Researchers have not been able to pin down exactly what keeps them around for so long, but their slow-motion lifestyle may have something to do with it.
Giant tortoises have very slow metabolisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slower rate than smaller and faster animals. Physiologist Max Rubner introduced the rate of living theory. The theory suggested aninverse relationship between metabolism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metabolism, the shorter the life. Scientists have had some issues with the theory over the past century, but it did produce the phrase "‘live fast, die young", and it serves as the basis for more research on the topic.
The link between metabolism and longevity (长寿) is still not understood. Some scientists believe that metabolism is linked to the creation of free radicals (自由基). They are the molecules (分子) that damage cells and that increase as more energy is burned by the body. According to this theory, tortoises live longer because their slow metabolisms bum less energy. which means less harm to the cells in their bodies.
Theories on aging alone don't fully explain how tortoises live much longer than humans, but their reproductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanation. Because of their massive hard shells and their geographic isolation (they only live on a few specific islands), giant tortoises have very few enemies to worry about. This means giant tortoises don't have to rush into reproduction to keep their species alive.
Each theory has its limitations and unanswered questions, but scientists believe that a combination of biological and evolutionary factors is what keeps giant tortoises alive for so long.
(1)、What does the underlined word "inverse" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Similar. B、Opposite. C、Clear. D、Unchanging.(2)、What can we learn about free radicals?A、Free radicals can protect cells. B、Free radicals increase with age. C、Fewer free radicals lead to a longer lifetime. D、The slower the metabolism, the more free radicals.(3)、Why don't giant tortoises rush to produce their young?A、They have little worry about extinction. B、They have a low reproductive ability C、They live a long time. D、They usually prefer to be alone.(4)、What could be the best title for this article?A、Live fast, die young. B、The way metabolism works. C、Jonathan, oldest tortoise. D、Secret to giant tortoises' longevity. -

Jane was still sleeping when the phone rang in the living room. She opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the table. It was already nine o'clock! Although Jane was still very sleepy, she knew she had to get up because her mother was working in her office and she couldn't expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the Phone. She quickly put on a coat and ran to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, "Good morning!"
It was from her father, who was a seaman and rarely came back. Suddenly, Jane's sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities. They were the pride of the family.
"Good morning, Dad. Why do you call us so early on the weekend?" Jane said and pretended to be annoyed. "Tom and I have been very nice recently." "My dear, today is your mother's birthday, and I have ordered a cake online and it will be sent to our home late in the afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother."
Hearing her father's words, Jane felt a little ashamed. How could she forget her mother's birthday?!
While she was chatting with her father, Jane looked around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes on the sofa. The floor hadn't been cleaned for a few days since her mother had to work all this week.
She looked at the clock again and was sure that she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
"Well, Dad, now I'm going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!" Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Eighteen-year-old Robert was born with an excellent musical gift. There was something in his voice that charmed everyone. His family was not well-off and his parents had no money to send him to music classes. But on his own, Robert learned to play the guitar. His voice was so soft and beautiful that he dreamed of becoming a singer in the future.
One day when he was walking home through the college corridor, he glanced at the notice board and knew there would be a music competition at the college. He was excited and decided to take part. "How do I find a peaceful place to compose a song?" While he was struggling with this problem, he saw an ad for an apartment to rent. He dialed the number on the ad and the old landlord told him that his flat was available at 600 dollars a month. The rent was too high. Robert asked whether he could pay half, and then pay the rest without a deposit (押金). To his surprise, the old man agreed.
Robert moved to the flat with his guitar and played songs every day. Many days passed, yet he didn't write even a single line of his new song. With only one week left, he was totally depressed. Suddenly, he heard a knock on the door and went to answer it. It was his landlord.
Robert was puzzled by the gentleman's visit when he spoke. "I live upstairs. Actually, I'm hearing music from you many days." "Yeah, I'm preparing for a competition," said Robert. "Well, the melody (旋律) was too monotonous (单调的). But if you don't mind, can I help you?" Robert was surprised that the old man was so frank with him. He nodded in agreement. The old man took the guitar and played a beautiful piece. Robert stared at him in shock. He had never heard such a beautiful song ever before. To Robert's amazement, it turned out that the old man was a retired music professor.

12、Here's one of my earliest food memories. I was1 my nose to the glass of the cabinet at a local American-style cookie shop, drawn in by the2 sugary scent from the ovens used to bake them3. It was unlike anything I'd eaten before.
Once I was old enough to have the4 of the kitchen, I became obsessed with trying to5 how to make my own cookies, with absolutely no success. Years later, I revisited the6 at work when I was tasked with creating a perfect chocolate chip cookie7 for a magazine feature. A few co-workers kindly recommended their favourite to me but,8, none hit the spot, so I started from scratch, analysed the situation and learned a lot in the process.
All in all, I've9 that I've baked upwards of 700 chocolate chip cookies — partly seeking10, but also for many, many bake sales. The hunt for a foolproof (万无一失的) recipe has meant I've tested countless11 and analysed what it takes to make a very sought-after thing — a unique chocolate chip cookie.
In all that time, I've made12: overcooked them, undercooked them, tried cookies that were13 cakey; ones that burned around the edge but were still raw in the centre. In the words of Thomas Edison: I did not14 — I simply found multiple ways that didn't work, and it ultimately led to me learning many tricks to get the kind of cookie I15.

13、Whether personal or professional, you likely have goals you're striving to achieve. Yet, as much as you want to accomplish a certain goal or task, you may sometimes wonder how to motivate yourself..
◎Find a responsible partner
Having a responsible partner can be an effective type of motivation to help you stay on track. Telling others about your plans or goals might help you feel more encouraged to actually achieve them.
◎Shake up your environment
. Creating a welcoming environment that feels good to be in and contributes to staying focused on your goals is important. Small details like plenty of sunlight or adding a plant to your desk can all help.
◎
Sometimes, it can be easy to lose motivation if you feel like you're not making enough progress toward a big goal. If you start to feel this way, reflect on your progress. You might be surprised to look back and realize just how far you've come.
When measuring progress, focus on measuring behaviors over results. For example, if you want to become a better writer and publish a story, measure your research, drafts, and discussions on the topic.. Even though you don't have complete control over the outcome, you have full control over your behaviors.
◎Schedule breaks in your day
Breaks allow your brain to rest and digest all the information you've just taken in.. For example, surfing the Internet still requires your brain to process information and make decisions. Doing a small chore, going for a walk, or taking a power coffee nap are all great alternatives.
A. Track your progress
B. Stay optimistic and trust yourself
C. In fact, even a short break helps avoid burnout
D. Our working environments are full of distractions
E. Managing to write a little bit every day is even better
F. The following tips can serve as guides on how to get motivated
G. However, not all types of breaks provide the same amount of restfulness

14、The tall, stony coastlines of the northeast Pacific Ocean are much quieter than they were. Following a punishing oceanic heat wave in the region, the noisy seabirds that once crowded the sea cliffs are now greatly thinned, to a quarter of their former size in some places. This sudden loss of millions of birds, and probably many other animals, may be the largest wildlife death event recorded in modern times.
The story begins in late 2014, when a violent oceanic heat wave "Blob" parked itself over the Pacific northeast, raising ocean temperatures far above normal for almost two years. It cooked up an ecological chain reaction, reducing phytoplankton (浮游植物) populations and in turn the forage fish that seabirds like common murres eat. In 2015 and 2016, the birds collectively starved to death.
"We knew right away that it was a big disaster," says Renner, a wildlife biologist with U. S. Fish and Wildlife at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge in Homer. "There were 62,000 carcasses that washed up on the beaches, all over the Gulf of Alaska, all the way down to California. It was clearly a big deal, but we couldn't really quantify the size of the death very well."
The scale and speed of the seabird population collapse is shocking, says Simon Tye, an ecologist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville who wasn't involved with the research. "It was pretty heartbreaking."
Tye and Renner both point out that with continued climate warming, heat waves like the "Blob" are expected to occur more frequently. This could endanger already vulnerable populations of many animals that have yet to recover in an ocean ecosystem affected by the previous heat wave.
While there's little immediate human control over oceanic heat waves, Renner says the findings underscore the importance of other conservation efforts for seabirds. This may include removing invasive predators or other species that - alongside climatic swings - create an additive stress on seabird populations.
"The top of the food web going away, I think that's really important," Tye says. "It should be an ominous (不祥的) thing for everybody."
(1)、What happened about a decade ago?A、Millions of seabirds died of hunger. B、Overfishing caused an ecological chain reaction. C、"Blob" came into being and disturbed the whole world. D、Temperatures rose up to the highest recorded in modern times.(2)、What does the underlined word "carcasses" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Birds alive. B、Ocean fishes. C、Bodies. D、Objects.(3)、What is Tye and Renner's attitude toward the ocean ecosystem?A、Optimistic. B、Concerned. C、Prejudiced. D、Indifferent.(4)、What can we know from the last two paragraphs?A、Human activities have directly caused global warming. B、The food web for seabird populations has improved a lot. C、Other species may pose a threat to the survival of seabirds. D、People should stress the importance of protecting other species. -
15、A study published in Geology introduces a new method for understanding earthquake behavior that could transform how we prepare for these natural disasters. The research focuses on curved scratches left on fault planes (断层面) when massive blocks of Earth grind past each other during an earthquake. These marks, called "slickenlines", work somewhat like tire marks at a crash scene, revealing the direction of movement.
To understand how these ancient marks could help save lives, the research team turned to New Zealand's Alpine Fault. The researchers focused their investigation on a fascinating section of the Alpine Fault known as an "earthquake gate". This region can either stop earthquakes in their tracks or allow them to continue their journey, a decision that has enormous consequences. When earthquakes push through this gate, they transform from magnitude 7.5 events into far more powerful magnitude 8.0 earthquakes, dramatically increasing their potential for destruction.
The implications of this research reach far beyond New Zealand's shores. "The scratches indicate the direction and origin of a past earthquake, potentially giving us clues about where a future quake might start and where it will go. This is key for California, where anticipating the direction of a quake on faults like San Andreas or San Jacinto could mean a more accurate forecast of its impact," Barth, UC Riverside geologist and lead author, notes.
Understanding the direction of earthquake movement isn't just academic curiosity, it could provide crucial extra minutes of warning time for vulnerable populations. Consider Los Angeles: if a major earthquake begins near the Salton Sea and moves northward along the San Andreas fault, it would direct intense energy toward the city. However, this scenario could also give residents about a minute's warning through cellular alert systems — precious time that could allow people to take cover, stop medical procedures, or shut down critical systems.
(1)、What are "slickenlines"?A、Special planes used by geologists. B、Bending lines drawn by researchers. C、Ancient marks caused by earthquakes. D、Tire scratches left by vehicle accidents.(2)、Why is the "earthquake gate" mentioned?A、To reveal the secret of the earth. B、To show the significance of the area. C、To suggest how powerful nature might be. D、To prove the destructive degree of earthquakes.(3)、What's the purpose of the study according to paragraph 3?A、To inform us what may cause earthquakes. B、To discover a way to fight against earthquakes. C、To better prevent the occurrence of earthquakes. D、To predict how earthquake might affect different areas.(4)、What is the last paragraph mainly about?A、The meaning of the study. B、How the earthquake moves. C、The example of an earthquake. D、What to do during the earthquake. -
16、One summer, my friend Shelia and I took our pre-teen children and their friends to Liberty land, an amusement park in Memphis, Tennessee. It was an extremely hot day.
By mid-afternoon, Shelia and I were worn out, while the kids were still energetic. We decided to rest in the outdoor theatre while the children continued riding. The theatre, though shaded, had no air conditioning.
A show was about to begin as we sat down. Despite the small audience of about 20 people looking for a cool place to sit, the teenage performers delivered an energetic and lively performance with rock and roll music.
In the end, the audience gave only polite, half-hearted applause. However, Shelia stood up and cheered loudly as if she had seen the most amazing Broadway production in her life. She explained to me, "These are someone else's kids. Since their moms aren't here, we need to support them." I was deeply moved by Shelia's words. I had never thought about it that way before. I joined Shelia in cheering for these hard-working young performers.
This happened over six years ago, but Shelia's words have stayed with me. Now, I try to remember that the teenagers I meet in various service jobs are all someone's children. I make an effort to treat them as I would want others to treat my own children.
Thanks, Shelia, for applying the golden rule — "Treat others' children as you would want them to treat yours!" This experience taught me the importance of supporting and encouraging young people, even when they're not our own, and how a small act of kindness can make a difference.
(1)、Why did Shelia and the author decide to rest in the outdoor theatre?A、They needed a break from the extreme heat. B、They desired to enjoy a Broadway-style show. C、They were asked to leave the rides and take a seat. D、They intended to approach the performers more closely.(2)、Why did Shelia cheer loudly for the teenage performers?A、She wanted to set a good example for her own children. B、She hoped to encourage more performances at the park. C、She felt the need to support them in their parents' absence. D、She was impressed by their professional-level performance.(3)、How has the author's behavior changed since this experience?A、She always cheers loudly at every performance. B、She attends more theatrical shows with her children. C、She avoids taking children to amusement parks on hot days. D、She treats young people in service jobs with more consideration.(4)、What is the best title of the text?A、The Challenges of Bringing up Pre-teens. B、The Benefits of Visiting Amusement Parks. C、The Difficulties of Performing in Hot Weather. D、The Importance of Encouraging Young People. -

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Daisy. Sure, it had been six months since she'd gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.
She was a beautiful lady, her fur a soft blend of brown, gold, and black stripes (条纹). Most importantly, she was a smart cat. I used to take her everywhere I could in a carrier (猫笼), and she was so clever that she learned to walk into it on her own, something I never thought a cat would do. At home, Daisy would enjoy a good nap curled up inside my parents' fireplace. We loved her so much that she was in the family's Christmas picture every year. So, we wouldn't like her missing this year's.
Dad always supported me, but he was so skeptical. He spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst despite the fact that he spent all six months looking for the cat. "She's either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her," he said. I rolled my eyes! He could do with a little more faith! Besides, though I couldn't explain it, I knew I'd see Daisy again. She'd been a stray (走失的宠物) when I found her — a tough little girl that had survived all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Daisy.
This Christmas, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Daisy's cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she'd been found. My eyes scanned cats of all shapes and sizes at the shelter. Much to my disappointment, none of them was my Daisy. We drove through the town without rest, checking every shelter and asking everyone we could find, but each response was the same: no one had seen her. Finally, we pulled over in front of the last shelter in town.

As the internet advances, having to input a verification code (验证码) when (log) into websites has become unavoidable. Have you ever struggled to distinguish between an ‘I', an ‘L' and a ‘l'? have you ever been asked to click on the bus among nine different squares, feeling like you are being treated as a fool?
This verification method, including numbers, texts and images, is known as CAPTCHA system, which stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart". It checks users are human by giving tasks that are double for people but impossible for bots (机器人程序), which stops scammers (骗子) from using bots (misuse) websites.
CAPTCHA sounds completely positive to (human). However, ever since reCAPTCHA, a free CAPTCHA service, (launch) in 2007, people might have been working as "data annotation (标注) laborers" free. The verification helps digitize books, newspapers and old radio shows.
For example, reCAPTCHA shows users one word that can be recognized by a (scan) and one word that cannot, such as a distorted (变形的) word from a newspaper. If users get the first word right, the system trusts their answer for the second word. Therefore, by answering verification questions, the user is (manual) transforming paper-copy materials into digital text.
