  • 3、It's well known that kids benefit from eating dinner with their families. In fact, children who spend this quality time with their parents do better in school and have larger vocabularies.  But what you may not know is that eating together as a family has benefits in other aspects too.

Healthy eating can be promoted. When families eat together, they usually have healthier home-cooked meals and consume more fruits and vegetables.  So they tend to give up destructive behavior and eat more mindfully when their children are watching.

It has been found that family meals may lead to social benefits for parents including those who have lower levels of the symptoms (症状) of depression and stress. Parents who eat with their children also say that they are more likely to be in a good mood.

When parents and kids eat together, they are developing links. In other words, they can build stronger connections. They will turn off the TV, put away their cell phones and just have face-to-face conversations. Keep the conversations positive and encourage kids to discuss their day.

Eating together helps pass on family tradition.  When teens grow up in homes that have regular family meals, they are far more likely to copy that practice in their homes. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology shows the more frequently a child eats family meals with his parents, the more be eats with his own children.

    A. Social skills can also be a key factor.

    B. Eating together profits parents' mental health.

    C. Plus, parents should keep listening more often.

    D. Parents want to be a model of good eating habits.

    E. Eating as a family hands down good parenting skills.

    F. The more the family communicate, the better their relationship.

    G. They also have lower rates of anxiety and manage emotions more sensibly.

  • 4、Top-down processing is the process of using context or general knowledge to understand what we perceive (感知). In 1970, psychologist Richard Gregory introduced the concept. He claimed that perception is constructive.

The processing plays an important role in our interactions with our environment. Our five senses are constantly taking in information. At any given time, we are experiencing different sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and ways things feel when we touch them. If we paid attention to each one of our senses all the time, we'd never do anything else. It enables us to simplify the process by relying on context and our pre-existing knowledge to understand what we notice. If our brains didn't employ top-down processing our senses would overwhelm us.

Top-down processing helps us understand what our senses are perceiving in our daily lives. For example, suppose you receive an important letter but a few drops of water have ruined part of the text. A few letters in different words are now just smudges (污迹). Yet, you're still able to read the letter in its entirety using top-down processing. You use the context of the words and sentences in which the smudges appear and your knowledge of reading to comprehend the meaning of the letter's message. See a word LO*E, with one letter knocked down, yet you are still able to quickly recognize the word as LOVE.

On the one hand, top-down processing serves a positive function by simplifying the way we comprehend our sensory perceptions. It enables us to shortcut the cognitive path between our perceptions and their meaning. On the other hand, patterns can also prevent us from perceiving things in unique ways. So we may understand the pattern of how to use a mobile phone, but if the manufacturer comes out with a new phone that employs completely unique interaction patterns, we may not be able to figure out how to use it. Besides, as our knowledge is limited and biased (片面的) in certain ways, it can lead to perceptual errors.

  • 5、Plastic bottles and bags can be vaporized into chemical building blocks and turned into new plastics with all the properties of original materials. There are hurdles (障碍) still to overcome, but the new process is a big step toward a truly circular economy for plastic.

About 5 billion tonnes of plastic has gone to landfill since the 1950s, and recycling efforts have only tackled 9 percent of what we have produced. With current techniques, plastics degrade in each recycling round and end up in landfill after only a few cycles of the process.

John Hartwig at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues had previously developed a process that broke down waste plastic into its constituent parts, but it relied on the expensive metal catalysts (催化剂). Now, his team has discovered an improved process that works on both polyethylene, from which most plastic bags are made, and polypropylene, which is used to make harder objects. And it relies only on catalysts considered so common that they are essentially "dirt", says Hartwig.

In experiments, the team used two catalysts to turn a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene into original chemicals for plastic with the efficiency of nearly 90 percent. However, Hartwig warns that there are still many hurdles to overcome, and that the process has only been tested in the presence of a small number of common additives (添加物). "There will be additives that will affect the catalysts," he says. This may mean having a way to separate those additives or finding catalysts that are resistant to them.

Cressida Bowyer at the University of Portsmouth, U.K., says that even if we have a process that can split waste plastic into constituent parts and withstand additives, other issues remain. The degree of poisonousness and disposal of the catalysts and additives must be considered, she says. "These could outweigh any perceived benefits of recycling technologies. Recycling should not be seen as any kind of solution to maintaining or increasing production of single-use and unnecessary plastics and continuing the current prevailing take-make-waste culture," she adds.

(1)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A、The harm plastic wastes do to humans. B、The alarming speed of making plastic wastes. C、The low efficiency of current plastic recycling. D、The pressing environmental pollution by plastic wastes.
(2)、Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word "dirt" in paragraph 3?
A、Materials quite essential. B、Materials easily accessible. C、Materials abundant in plastics. D、Materials basic to the products.
(3)、What does Hartwig think of the improved process?
A、It is not fully prepared for practical use. B、It reduces the need for single-use plastics. C、It needs further research to develop new materials. D、It can be applied to a limited number of common plastics.
(4)、What can be inferred from Cressida Bowyer's words?
A、Recycling doesn't produce any harmful substances and poisons. B、Health and environmental pollution should be the biggest concern. C、Recycling can be relied upon as a solution to widespread use of plastics. D、The improved process is as beneficial and sustainable as it is thought.
  • 6、Growing up in Cyprus, Elena felt she was different from other girls — she was interested in biology. But it was a family tragedy that helped shape her determination to major in medicine. "My parents lost their first child because he had Down's syndrome. He passed away when I was about seven years old," she says. "And I guess that's always been playing on my mind and I gradually formed the idea of studying medicine."

At about 14, she set her sights on studying medicine in the UK. "Despite being a student from a foreign country, I achieved A-levels in all my subjects, considered suitable for medicine," she says. Noah and Emma got married last year. After their baby Oliver was born, they were very delighted. However, that soon changed.

One night, Emma accidentally dropped a glass bowl when Oliver was just nearby, but he didn't react or turn around to the big sound of glass breaking. The next day, the hospital confirmed Oliver was born deaf. The couple were so sad. Weeks later, Oliver got his first hearing aid. He could now hear! Noah and Emma were excited.

Three years passed; it was time to send Oliver to school. Emma and Noah often described how great it would feel to be in a class full of friends with a teacher in the front. Oliver began to look forward to his upcoming school life. However, Oliver returned home that day, crying, "I don't want to go to school. I have no friends." The following days, Oliver came back home, still sad. Emma and Noah were anxious.

One Friday, Oliver's teacher, Sarah, met the couple. "Oliver seems shy. He never plays with his classmates. And he doesn't talk to me although I try talking to him. He's afraid that he's different and that his classmates will laugh at him because of his deafness," she said.

Emma and Noah were heartbroken and worried. After chatting with the couple, Sarah learned Oliver's sixth birthday was on Monday of the next week. Then, she made a secret plan for Oliver.

After school that day, Sarah sent a message to the parents of all the children in her class. In the message, she told them about Oliver's trouble. And she wanted them to encourage and ask their kids to come to school on Sunday to prepare a birthday party for Oliver: to decorate the classroom, prepare a birthday cake, etc. Then, Sarah put down her cell phone, wondering whether any parents would support it.

  • 13、Pursuing hobbies helps us grow physically, intellectually, and emotionally, while boosting self-esteem. They also foster connections with others, and improve work performance. But where do you start?

Hobbies provide an escape, helping you relax and clear your mind. When exploring potential hobbies, it's important to reflect on why you want an activity. Do you want to feel mentally engaged, distracted, or socially connected? There's no single perfect hobby for everyone.

Once you've identified a potential hobby, it's wise to start small. Jumping into a new activity with too much enthusiasm can lead to exhaustion or disappointment. For example, if you' re curious about paintball, try joining a local Meetup group for an outing or two. This approach allows you to test the waters without feeling pressured.

Humans are naturally curious. However, in today's busy world, we often forget to embrace new opportunities. Therefore, the next time someone hands you a flyer or invites you to an event, take the chance.

Finally, don't underestimate the power of revisiting childhood passions. Think back to what you wanted to be when you were a child. That dream could point you toward a fulfilling hobby. Revisiting childhood activities like drawing, building models, or collecting items can also be a great starting point. They evoke nostalgia and joy, reviving your enthusiasm for hobbies.

    A. Take small steps initially.

    B. Here are useful suggestions to help you get better.

    C. Hobbies should always fit with your current skills.

    D. These familiar activities often make it easier to div e in.

    E. Experts offer some tips on how to discover your hobbies.

    F. Another important aspect is to stay open to new possibilities.

    G. Reflecting on what your life lacks can also guide your choice.

  • 14、Researchers at University College London found that boys in year 5 and year 9 in England scored significantly higher than girls in maths and science in recent international assessments. Dr Jennie Golding, of UCL's Institute of Education and the co-principal investigator of the research said, "It is difficult to say exactly why this gap has opened up but our findings point to some factors including confidence and socioeconomic status."

The improvement by boys was particularly noticeable in maths, where the data analysis found that greater confidence was strongly associated with higher scores in the quadrennial tests conducted for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS).

Across both year groups in maths and in year 9 science, the researchers found that significantly higher percentages of boys reported being very confident on statements related to maths and science, while a large percentage of girls said they were not confident. In year 9 maths, 21% of boys and 9% of girls reported they were very confident, while 38% of boys and 60% of girls reported they were not confident. In 2024, boys consistently outperformed girls at both grades in maths, physics, economics and statistics.

TIMSS uses the number of books at home as an index (指标) for socioeconomic status. Stubborn gaps remain between disadvantaged pupils and their better-off peers. The researchers found a significant gap between pupils who had access to a large number of books at home and those who did not. In year 9 science, pupils in households with fewer than ten books at home scored 461, compared to 601 for those in households with over 200 books at home.

"Those who have fewer educational resources at home need extra funds in order to access the same opportunities to learn compared with their better-resourced peers," said Prof Mary Richardson, the study's co-principal investigator.

(1)、Why did boys score higher in maths and science than girls?
A、Because they were more active. B、Because they were more intelligent. C、Because they were more confident. D、Because they were more trustworthy.
(2)、What can we learn from this text?
A、Girls outperformed boys at both grades in physics. B、Book collection could impact academic performance. C、Socioeconomic status played a key role in students' scores. D、Narrow gaps existed between struggling and wealthy students .
(3)、What did Prof Mary Richardson suggest?
A、Reducing the difficulty of exams. B、Boosting self-confidence. C、Increasing the number of school books. D、Providing more financial support.
(4)、How did researchers conduct the study?
A、By making comparisons. B、By making explanations. C、By giving examples. D、By giving definitions.
  • 15、Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest — an area about the size of Iceland because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world's forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to "grow" a wooden product without cutting down trees.

In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (使脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities.

They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials flexible, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What's more, it's to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!

Research of this kind is ground-breaking. "This work demonstrates the great power of a technology," says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. "The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, flexibility, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow' any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can't achieve."

(1)、What's the purpose of the study?
A、To protect diverse plants. B、To grow more trees. C、To predict disappearing forests. D、To reduce tree losses.
(2)、What does the underlined word "tune" in paragraph 2 mean?
    A、Adopt. B、Change. C、Destroy. D、Increase.
(3)、Which can be concluded about the plant materials from the findings?
A、Higher hormone levels produce less dense cells. B、Lower hormone levels lead to denser cell structures. C、The level of hormones influences their flexibility. D、Their density affects the shape of the cells.
(4)、What is the most suitable title of the text?
A、An Innovative Technique on Plant Materials. B、A Profound Study on Global Plant Growth. C、Protecting Plant Diversity in Natural Forests. D、Comparing Tree Growth in Labs and Nature.
  • 16、I have been passionate about public welfare since childhood, but I never imagined that a Chinese figure named Lei Feng would become an integral part of my life — my guiding star and the inspiration behind a global movement.

In 2018, I came to China for the first time to study at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics (JUFE) and actively participated in the university's public welfare activities. During these events, local people often called me "Yang Lei Feng", which I later learned means "foreign Lei Feng".

Curious, I looked him up online and discovered a young soldier known for his selflessness and dedication to helping others. The more I read, the more I saw how his values aligned with the principles I aspired to uphold.

Inspired by Lei Feng's spirit, I established the Lei Feng International Volunteer Association on March 5, 2021 — Lei Feng Day — alongside young people from different countries at JUFE. Our mission is to support children with special needs, assist the elderly, promote environmental awareness, empower through education, and foster cross-cultural understanding. Through these efforts, we continue to keep Lei Feng's spirit alive in a modern, global context.

On Lei Feng Day in 2025, I took a bold step to spread his legacy beyond China by launching the global "Learn from Lei Feng" campaign. We celebrated the day in five countries — Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Algeria, and China — through discussions on his biography, charity programs, and community service activities.

What began as a vision to promote his values internationally has since grown into a global movement, now spanning 15 countries. Our efforts not only strengthen cross-cultural bonds but also contribute to building a more compassionate and service-oriented world.

    Museum of Bad Art

    Boston, Massachusetts

The mission of MOBA is to collect, exhibit and celebrate art that will be shown in no other venue. The museum's new location, in the Dorchester Brewing Co., assumes visitors would need a drink after seeing this work. Highlights include Lucy in the Field with Flowers, a painting found in 1993 leaning against a trash barrel, waiting for garbage collection.

    International Tennis Hall of Fame

    Newport, Rhode Island

The International Tennis Hall of Fame was built on the site of the first United States National Lawn Tennis Championships in 1881. A highlight is a King Court for "court tennis", first played by monks and kings dating back to 1538. There are only 10 such courts in North America, as they cost approximately $3 million to make, but visitors to the museum can rent it and play.

    Jamestown, New York

Based in Lucille Ball's hometown, this museum features exhibits such as Jerry Seinfeld's puffy shirt and Joan Rivers's card catalog of 65,000 jokes. It was a sunny May morning in 2023. Michael Armus, a 69-year-old retired car painter, entered Bank of the West to deposit a check, feeling something wrong. Normally, bank workers greeted him cheerfully and laughed at his simple jokes.

But today, none of the tellers acknowledged him. Nor did the bank's manager, who sat at his desk with his head down and seemed to be whispering into his telephone. As Armus approached the teller windows, he noticed the three employees had similar worried looks on their faces. He heard one teller whisper to another, "He's got a note."

Armus looked to his left and noticed a man at another window with his striped T-shirt pulled up to partially hide his face. "This is a robbery," Armus thought.

He heard the man say, "I don't want to hurt anybody." Minutes earlier, the man had passed a note to the teller demanding cash and saying he had a gun. When his shirt slipped slightly, Armus recognized him — Eduardo, who often read Bible stories to passersby on a street corner. Suddenly, instead of being frightened, Armus felt compassion for him, and a thought popped into his head: Maybe I can help.

He walked over to the man and calmly asked, "What's wrong? Don't you have a job?"

Shocked, Eduardo looked at Armus and exclaimed (呼喊), "There is nothing in this town for me. Nothing!" Then, with tears streaming down his face, he said, "I just want to go to prison."

Armus recalled his own troubled past. "I've been lost too," he said gently. "Let's talk outside." To everyone's surprise, Eduardo agreed.

Outside, Armus hugged Eduardo as he sobbed. Police soon arrived, aiming rifles (步枪) until they confirmed Armus was innocent. Eduardo, charged with attempted robbery, had no real gun. Officers praised Armus for calming the crisis.

"Love overcomes all," Armus later said. He often helped the homeless, carrying blankets in his car.

As we know, China has a long and glorious history of construction. Dujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and wonder in the development of Chinese science. Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering (achieve) is still used today.

In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands suffered from regular floods (cause) by the overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region governor, together with his son, decided (find) a solution. Li designed a series of channels at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it (suit) for farming.

Once the system (finish), no more floods occurred and the people were able to live (peaceful). Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature — Unlike modern dams the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally. This (able) the ecosystem and fish populations to exist harmony.
