• 1、Your genes are inherited from parents and ancestors, picking up traits that help us survive and evolve with environments around us.

Much of this is encoded as natural instinct. When a baby is born, it needn't be taught how to breathe or cry —this is hard-wired into our DNA. We know that when tired we need to sleep and when hungry we need to eat. The same goes for animals. Within two hours of being born, a foal attempts its first steps with little guidance from its parent, all from instinct.

As well as our basic instincts, our genetics can carry more complex abilities, knowledge and reflexes. Findings have also hinted that our facial expressions could be hard-wired behaviors. Babies start to smile at around two — again, this isn't specifically taught. Although they may take in the expressions of people around, it's hard to test if they connect emotion to the faces they see. However, a 2019 study showed that athletes who had been born blind made the same disheartened expressions when losing as athletes with sight, suggesting that facial expressions may not be learnt from watching others.

While genetics play a part, infants are also heavily influenced during their time in the womb (子宫). Mothers who eat strong-tasting foods such as garlic can affect children's taste buds, giving them a fancy for the same tastes later in life. Taste and smell are important triggers that babies look for when first feeding, as the mother's milk will carry the same flavors experienced in the womb. This pre-birth taste sampling increases their chances of survival.

Generational memory could also explain why certain people are naturally gifted in areas like music or sport. Actually, the existence of it is hard to prove, since so many environmental and outside factors change behaviour and personality, especially with young minds, which are easily developed. However, the theory is starting to be taken more seriously, and studies involving short-generation life forms such as nematode worms are making significant breakthroughs. We may soon have undeniable proof that our genetics pass down more than we think.

  • 2、It started innocently enough, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled with adrenaline (肾上腺素), as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.

Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while bouldering (攀岩). I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I believe, my foot missed a hold on the way down. I didn't land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick sadly, "A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn't let that happen."

It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then panic set in. I felt like I had let myself and Nick down. He reassured me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.

Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover, it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the limits.

  • 4、The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics are awarded to two researchers on Oct. 8, for their foundational discoveries and inventions in the field of artificial neural (神经的) networks. Though artificial neural networks are modeled on biological neural networks, both researchers' work drew on statistical physics, therefore winning the prize in physics.

The physicist John Hopfield used ideas from physics to study a particular type of neural network, now called the Hopfield network (HNN), which explained how neuron systems interact to produce stable memories. During the 1980s, Geoffrey Hinton and his colleagues built on Hopfield's ideas to create a new class of model. Unlike Hopfield networks that could store patterns and correct errors in patterns, the new model could generate new patterns, thereby planting the seeds of the modern generative AI revolution.

Hinton was also part of another breakthrough that happened in the 1980s, which is a key algorithm (算法) that makes it possible to select weights based on the performance of the network on a training data set. However, it remained challenging to train artificial neural networks with many layers. In the 2000s, Hinton and his co-workers cleverly discovered an approach, and the deep learning revolution began.

The Nobel Prize in Physics shows how ideas from physics contributed to the rise of deep learning. Now deep learning has begun to pay back to physics by enabling accurate and fast simulations (模拟) of systems ranging from molecules and materials all the way to the entire Earth's climate. By awarding the Nobel Prize in Physics to Hopfield and Hinton, the prize committee has signaled its hope in humanity's potential to use these advances to promote human well-being and to build a sustainable world.

(1)、For what were the two scientists awarded the Noble Prize in Physics?
A、They invented artificial neural networks. B、They discovered biological neural networks. C、They both are excellent experts in the field of statistical physics. D、They used methods in physics to study artificial neural networks.
(2)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A、John Hopfield's devotion and achievement. B、How modern generative AI revolution began. C、Geoffrey Hinton's research on neural network. D、The cooperation between John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton.
(3)、What has led to the deep learning revolution according to the passage?
A、Finding a key algorithm which could select weights. B、Creating a new model that could generate new patterns. C、Finding a way to train multi-layer artificial neural networks. D、Discovering an approach to training artificial neural networks.
(4)、According to the passage, what is the influence of awarding the prize to Hopfield and Hinton?
A、More people will be inspired to study physics. B、Simulations of systems will be faster and more accurate. C、People will employ the development to benefit the Earth. D、Deep learning will play a more important role in our life.

The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement, the four young climbers patted each other on the back.

As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a troubled look on his face.

"What is it, Jason?" Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.

"Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way," Jason replied. He remembered the villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm could appear from nowhere.

"But it's so warm and sunny here. I don't think the storm is coming this way," Sofia said, more in hope than expectation.

However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, "If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically. The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast."

The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner than expected. The wind screamed in their ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.

  • 10、Windows brighten a room, and give us a view outside of it. They also let in a large amount of heat from the sun. In fact, about 87% of heat gains in a given space come through its windows. This is because ultraviolet (紫外线的) radiation passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like curtains, but this also blocks the view.

A recent study indicates that soon people who love a view — but hate the heat — will be able to have it both ways. The study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat.

Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. So, what's new about this coating? It's all about the angles. Because windows are placed vertically (垂直地), sunlight hits them at different angles throughout the day. If a given coating only blocks ultraviolet light at a 90-degree angle, it is only useful at the time of day at which the sun hits the glass at that angle. "The angle between the sunshine and the window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency wherever the sun's position is in the sky," said the lead author of the study.

Instead of trying to use trial and error, which could take years, the scientists used AI machine-learning model assisted by quantum (量子的) computing to figure out the way to create an ideal window coating. The coating can remain clear and keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle at which the sunlight is hitting the window.

There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to home use, and even for use in the cars. It will certainly lower energy use as people all over the world turn off their air conditioners and electric fans and still enjoy the view.

(1)、What is a disadvantage of window coverings?
A、They are expensive. B、They are difficult to install. C、They prevent the view outside. D、They can't block the heat effectively.
(2)、What makes the new window coating unique?
A、It blocks all sunlight. B、It is efficient at a fixed angle. C、It changes color with sunlight. D、It works in all sunlight conditions.
(3)、How did scientists develop the new window coating?
A、By trial and error. B、With quantum computing and AI. C、By imitating existing window films. D、With traditional machine-learning models.
(4)、What is the author's attitude toward the new window coating?
    A、Doubtful. B、Unclear. C、Critical. D、Optimistic.
  • 11、Expanding land for cows is the single biggest factor of rainforest loss in the Amazon. Deforestation reduces habitats for endangered species and releases planet-heating carbon dioxide. Actually, the Amazon is vulnerable. Its trees create moist (湿润的) clouds that make rain. If too many trees are cut down, the system could break down, drying the region and releasing a dangerous amount of carbon dioxide. "Reducing beef and dairy consumption has to be part of the solution for saving the Amazon and reducing climate pollution," says Tim Searchinger, a senior research scholar at Princeton University.

However, Over the last three decades, the number of cows Molina and his family raise per hectare in the Amazon has nearly doubled, and milk production has increased. The reason is that they have transformed their farm into a completely different environment.

"This is the best hotel for a cow. With controlled temperatures and very good quality food, the cows sleep peacefully." Molina said. The controlled temperatures are provided by trees. In 1993, the Molinas planted trees and plants across their farm, which now offer shade to cool the cows. The seed pods (种荚) and leaves from these trees give the cows protein-rich nutrition.

As Molina walks through the farm, he picks up some black, soft soil, similar to coffee grounds. The trees on the farm support bacteria that "fix" nitrogen, enriching the soil without the need for chemical fertilizers. Fertilizer production contributes to about 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Molina explains that they no longer need to use nitrogen fertilizers, saving money and reducing climate pollution. Additionally, the trees provide shade that cools the area and helps keep moisture in the soil. This has reduced the farm's need for irrigation, helping it to get through recent regional droughts.

By adopting these practices, the Molina family has increased the productivity of cows and dairy farms while minimizing environmental harm, proving that eco-friendly farming can help protect both the land and the climate.

(1)、What does the underlined word "vulnerable" in paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A、Closely monitored. B、Easily damaged. C、Specially protected. D、Largely untouched.

A、To demonstrate ways to increase productivity of cows. B、To stress the necessity of reducing dairy consumption. C、To highlight the urgency of environmental protection. D、To compare traditional and modern farming practices.
(3)、How do the trees benefit the soil according to the text?
A、By fixing soil structure with their roots. B、By providing shade and cooling the cows. C、By fertilizing the soil and holding moisture. D、By absorbing harmful chemicals in the soil.
(4)、What is the text mainly about?
A、Innovative farming practices stop deforestation. B、Planting trees helps to reduce climate pollution. C、Cow raising threatens the ecosystem in the Amazon. D、Eco-friendly farming balances cows and the Amazon.

The bright spot of red was what first caught Randy Jackson's attention on December 16, 2018, as he hiked the remote fields behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, near the U.S.-Mexico border. Jackson walked toward it with his dog, and found it to be a weathered balloon entangled (缠住) in the dry grass, with a string attached to something.

It was a note. "Dayami," it read on one side, in a child's writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word. Jackson flipped the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. Although his Spanish wasn't very good, he could see it was a Christmas list.

Jackson was charmed. He guessed that a child might have tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Jackson had sent aloft (空中), but he still hoped he could find the girl who had sent this one.

It would be difficult, but Jackson had a few clues (线索). About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. "Based on the prevailing (盛行的) wind, that's surely where it came from," he thought.

Jackson brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes, and art supplies, among other things.

Jackson then posted about it on social media, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl's family. A few days passed with no leads; Jackson worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away. Jackson's wife helped explain the situation on the phone, and got the promise that Radio XENY would air the story, and arrange a meeting between them and Dayami's family, as soon as Dayami was found.

Overall, the recommendations for the guidelines sound familiar. They should also eat less red meat and processed meats, as well as vegetables like potatoes.

This panel worked on the guidelines for almost two years. It was the first to consider dietary needs based on financial situation, race and culture. Fatima, an obesity expert, said that considering these new elements will help make sure that the guidance reflects and includes various population groups.

Several of them showed links between ultra-processed foods and being overweight or obesity. But the nutrition experts said the evidence was too limited to make recommendations. The panel also didn't change recommendations about alcohol. The current guidelines are two drinks or less a day for men and one for women. The nutrition panel described a healthy diet for people beginning at two years old.

The diets of most Americans don't meet the current guidelines. More than half of American adults have one or more diet-related health condition. The report also notes that nutrition-related long-term health conditions will continue to threaten health throughout their life.

The dietary guidelines are updated every five years. Related government officials will then hold a public meeting to discuss the recommendations before they are finally released. All this makes it possible for Americans to attach importance to the dietary guidelines.

    A. The panel considered more than 40 studies.

    B. For a healthy diet, people should eat more beans.

    C. The last time the guidance was updated was in 2020.

    D. The public has 60 days to comment on the guidance.

    E. 18 million individuals have insecure sources of food.

    F. It is high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and fish.

    G. We should also note that there's something missing in the guideline.

Alcohol consumption (饮用) is falling among young, wealthy and health-conscious consumers. Better brewing (酿制) techniques have introduced tastier non-alcoholic choices. Sales of alcohol-free beer have increased by 26% in the past year.

Even so, the overall market is still tiny. Non-alcoholic beverages make up a sliver (少量) of Britain's alcoholic drink market, at just 3%. That is comparable to the share in France and America but far behind that in Germany (16%) or Spain (11%). Sales growth of alcohol-free drinks would need to exceed 40% each year to come close to raising their market share above 10% by 2030.

Wider availability and better products will naturally help the market to grow. But so would fixing a specific problem in the British market. According to standards set by the Department of Health and Social Care, drinks must contain less than 0.05% alcohol by volume (aby) to be considered alcohol-free. That is less than the alcohol content of burger rolls or ripe bananas. It is also much less than incomparable markets. The 0.5% aby beers made by Big Drop, a British craft brewer, are officially deemed (认为) non-alcoholic in America, Australia and Germany but not at home.

This strict standard has two consequences. One is for competition. Obeying the guidance is hard for smaller brands in particular; producing drinks at 0.05% aby or less requires expensive equipment to extract (提取) the alcohol. Some don't even bother trying. Nearly one-third of the drinks sold and labeled (标明) as alcohol-free in Britain ignore the official guidance. That leads to the second consequence: confusion. More than half of respondents in a poll (民意调查) by Opinium, a research firm, said there was a lack of clarity over the suitability of non-alcoholic products for pregnant women, drivers and people who don't drink for religious reasons.

The government, keen to give more options to people who drink to excess (过量), has launched a consultation (磋商) on updating its rules so that drinks with 0.5% aby can legally reach the alcohol-free standard. A labeling change is not going to make the market go crazy but it would bring Britain into line with other countries. And it might make it even easier to order something non-alcoholic next time you are at the bar.

(1)、Why are the figures mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A、To prove a point. B、To attract the readers. C、To warm people. D、To make a proposal.
(2)、What can we learn about the non-alcoholic drink market in Britain?
A、The overall non-alcoholic drink market is bigger than before. B、The non-alcoholic drink market share will reach 10% by 2030. C、The market growth merely depends on wider availability and better products. D、Alcohol-free drinks have a much bigger market share in France than in Britain
(3)、What does the underlined "That" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A、Lacking clarity over the suitability for different people B、Some brands' disregarding the British official guidance. C、Considering the drink less than 0.05% aby to be alcohol-free D、Small brands' buying the expensive equipment to extract the alcohol
(4)、What benefit will the consultation launched by the government bring?
A、It will give alcoholic drinks legal status. B、It will cause the market to grow dramatically. C、It will help Britain keep pace with other countries. D、It will make people choose non-alcoholic beverages.

  • 19、My childhood was a painted picture of a sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin in the countryside, but I lived in my mother's arms. They were so delicate but strong, and her red hair falling around me was like a curtain that separated me from the world.

Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and monsters only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village wasarchaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren't many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group.

They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated (解放) from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.

My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outery from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged (浸没), time would stop, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.

I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning. For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would pause, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.

We should have known that it wouldn't last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there's something so tragic about growing up: your perspective on the people and life around you changes; you always struggle to reach a mirror, only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day and find a different person staring back out at you.

    A、Time-honored. B、Old-fashioned. C、Mountain-ringed. D、Self-employed.

A、A dangerous pause in life. B、A mirror reflecting adulthood. C、A prison of social restrictions. D、A state of immersion in the present.
(4)、What message does the author convey in the last paragraph?
A、Struggle and challenge make a man grow up. B、Childhood joy is completely erased by growth C、Growth often brings unavoidable self-reinvention. D、The regret of growth is that people can't find a mirror.
