Many animals use some kinds of "language". They use signals and the signals have meanings. For example, 1 a bee has found some food, it goes 2 its home. 3 is difficult for a bee to tell 4 bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it can do a little dancing. This tells the bees where the food is and 5 it is.
Some animals show 6 they feel by making sounds. It is not difficult to tell if a dog is angry because it barks. Birds make several different sounds and 7 has its meaning. Sometimes we humans make songs in the same way we make sounds like "Oh" to 8 how we feel about 9 or we 10 something on our feet.
We humans have languages. We have words. These words have meanings of things, actions, feelings, or ideas. We are able to 11 each other information , to tell other people 12 we think about or how we feel. By writing down words, we can remember what has happened or13 messages to people far away.
Languages, like people, live and die. If a language is not used by people, it is called a dead language. This language cannot live and grow because 14 speaks it.

In many people's eyes, artist Mark Rothko's enormous paintings are nothing more than masses of color. Yet, a painting can be worth nearly $100 million. Besides, Pablo Picasso's twisted faces attract some viewers but terrify others.
Why does the phenomenon happen? The answer may lie in our brain networks. Researchers have now developed an algorithm(算法) that can predict art preference by analyzing how a person's brain breaks down visual information and decides whether a painting is "good". The findings show for the first time how basic features of a painting combine with human judgment to give art value in our minds.
Most people, including researchers, consider art preference to be various, says Anjan Chatterjee, a neurologist(神经学家) at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study. In some cases, personal preference is rooted in biology. For instance, sugary foods help us survive. and people tend to share similar standards of beauty when it comes to human faces and landscapes. However, when it comes to art, we seem to care about and value relatively arbitrary(任意的) things, according to Chatterjee.
To figure out how the brain forms value judgments about art, neuroscientist Kiyohito ligaya and his colleagues first asked more than 1,300 volunteers on the website Amazon Mechanical Turk to rate a selection of 825 paintings from four Western types including impressionism, cubism, abstract art and color field painting. Volunteers were all over the age of 18, but researchers didn't give exact information about their familiarity with art or their ethnic (种族的) or national origin.
The researchers revealed that paintings preferred by the same groups of people tended to share certain visual characteristics. These characteristics all fell into two categories: "Low-level" characteristics, like contrast and color, were intrinsic (固有的) to an image; "High-level" characteristics, like the emotion a painting brought about, required human understanding. Once the method was trained, it could analyze these characteristics in new paintings and accurately predict which works a person would like.

The only thing separating my two worlds is the Rio Grande river— it might not be much, but it's enough for me to feel a big difference in customs and values. People who are not from El Paso, Texas, United States or a border city might not understand what it's like to grow up between two places at once.
I grew up in a Mexican household. My dad was born in El Paso but lived nearly his entire life in Ciudad Juárez until I was born, and my mom was born and raised in Mexico. She didn't move to the US until she had me, when she was 28. My first language was Spanish, but my parents did not want me in bilingual classes. So, instead, it was all English for me at school.
English was all I spoke among friends at school, while Spanish was the designated language with family, and I hardly ever mixed them. I also spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents, who lived in Juárez and you could say helped raise and shape who I am today. It's thanks to them that I perfected my Spanish, learned to read and write in that language — despite never taking classes—and fell in love with my Mexican culture by traveling to Mexico City and around the country.
Along with being bilingual came a sense of having a double identity. I enjoyed watching Spanish TV series with my grandma as much as American series such as The Amanda Show. And the same went for music. I loved listening to Spanish singers, as much as American pop singers.
It wasn't until high school that I began to meet other people whose backgrounds I could relate to. I was introduced to friends with whom I identified because they were Mexican American and who had also been raised in El Paso but often visited family in Juárez. It was also during these years that I started going out to party in Juárez.
Growing up on the border is pretty special. Thanks to my bicultural upbringing, I learned to enjoy and appreciate both sides of me without ever questioning who I am, because the truth is that I need both of those relationships and cultural identities to feel complete.
(1)、What do we know about the author's upbringing background?A、He was born in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. B、His parents were both born and raised in Mexico. C、He attended school in the US from a young age. D、He showed his bilingual ability to his classmates at school.(2)、Who helped the author learn to read and write in Spanish?A、His teachers. B、His parents. C、His friends. D、His grandparents.(3)、Why does the author mention the Spanish TV series and American series?A、To contrast the two styles of TV series. B、To prove the author fits into both cultures well. C、To illustrate the author's wide interests. D、To show grandma and the author have the same hobbies.(4)、How does the author feel about his bicultural identity?A、Proud. B、Confused. C、Worried. D、Awkward. -

Dmitry Bondarenko was a Toronto-based artist. One day he had an appointment with a friend for a painting session. So he put the objects including his sketchbook (速写本) in the back basket of his bike and then cycled to meet his friend. But when he arrived and turned to take his things, he was shocked to find his sketchbook was missing.
The 5×7 black sketchbook contained a decade of his works and had great emotional value to him. It included portraits of friends and family, and still life paintings of his great grandfather when he served in Red Army in Russia. The notebook became a visual account of the 40-year-old artist's life and family history. His parents are Russian and Ukrainian, and he and his family moved to Canada when he was a child.
Dmitry shared that he felt a deep sense of loss when he first discovered his sketchbook missing. He thought that the book must have fallen out of his bicycle's back basket. So he went back to look for it. First, he retraced his steps and posted dozens of flyers along the bike path through the park. He also checked with park services. Several days later, he still had no clue where his precious sketchbook was, making him extremely sad and anxious.
"I realized the weight of it when it was gone, how precious it is," Bondarenko said sadly.
In a last-ditch effort to locate his treasured sketchbook, he decided to turn to social media. He shared a post to a neighborhood Facebook group, detailing his trouble. A few other community-oriented Facebook groups reshared the post. Word quickly spread within the local community for everyone to keep an eye out for the missing sketchbook.
In the meanwhile, a man named Chris found the sketchbook in the park. As he picked it up and skimmed through the pages, he found there was no name or address. The paintings in the book were so impressive that he couldn't take his eyes off. Finally, he decided to leave the sketchbook where it was found, thinking the owner would return to look for it. He leafed through the sketchbook again before putting it down.
