Table tennis started as an after-dinner game, but is now a fast, high-tech sport. It also has  most players of any sport in the world.

 is believed that upper-class Victorians in England invented table tennis in the 1880s as an after-dinner alternative (可能的选择) to tennis,  (use) whatever they could find as equipment. A line of books would often be the net, and sometimes a cigarette box cover would be a racket.

In 1926, at a meeting  (hold) in Berlin, the International Table Tennis Federation was formed. The first World Championships were held in London in the same year, but the sport had to wait a long time before it was given a chance  (make) its first appearance at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

Over the years, table tennis has developed into a worldwide sport. There are perhaps 40 million competitive table tennis players and countless millions  play less seriously. Hopefully, table tennis  (play) by more people all over the world in the future.

Failing Successfully

Two years ago I took part in a speech competition and delivered a memorized speech. It was a hard time for me when the judge 1  the winners. At last, the moment of truth came. I got the worst.

After not being placed in the competition, I really wanted to 2  again. I realized that finding the right topic was the most important part of the whole 3 . It needs to be motivational and inspirational to the 4 . So I reworked my speech for the following year, 5  a different topic and spending many hours before the computer and in libraries doing research. Then I worked 6  the speech, line by line, word by word, making it 7  better.

The next year I participated in the competition again. I gave my 8 in two parts, one was about my own experience and the other was about the feelings that people usually have when giving a speech—how 9 it is, standing on a stage all alone, with everyone sitting and watching them. My speech 10 down well and I was hoping to do that a little bit better. 11 , my wish didn't come true. The competition was so fierce and again I wasn't 12 .

I was deeply disappointed, since I couldn't accept the fact that I had 13 twice in something that I had worked so hard on. However, I knew that losing is 14 and part of life. One of the judges said to me that my speech was quite good, 15 it needed to be better if I wanted to go any further. He advised me to struggle to 16 something like some of the empty gestures. He said that I would surely succeed someday.

While I didn't earn 17 as a result of the competition I did gain a new viewpoint. I discovered that I could fail successfully. I think I'll 18 to work hard and enter the next competition. Now, whenever I'm faced with a defeat, I 19 myself of what a famous person said, "The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself that it's a slip and not a 20 ."

Kids' health: Four steps for fighting stress

Everybody gets stressed time to time. Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:

⑴ When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. And don't forget about your friends. They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.

⑵Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.

⑶ After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. You need to figure out what the problem is. Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.

⑷Be positive. Most stress is temporary (暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it. These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.

E. Try to solve the problem.

Slowly but surely, we're moving closer and closer to 5G world. "5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age," said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. "The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It's pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There's lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.

Augmented reality glasses (AR实境眼镜) and virtual headset (虚拟现实耳机) haven't yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

I once thought that my teenager years were going to be the worst years of my life, because when I was 12 years old, I was a total outsider, was often bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.

But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that the real meaning of my life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.

Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.

Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone's life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.

Skiing has always been a big part of Mikaela Shiffrin's life. Her dad ski raced all through college and her mom raced and coached skiing. The Shiffrins taught Mikaela and her brother, Taylor, to ski at a very young age. At two and a half years old, Mikaela made her first ski run down her driveway on plastic skis.

Mikaela loved skiing. From ages 8 to 11, she did hundreds of training runs on small hills to learn the skills of slalom skiing (障碍滑雪). When Mikaela was 11, she began to learn at the Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont boarding school for skiers. She took classes, studied, and practiced her skiing. According to Burke Mountain Academy headmaster Kirk Dwyer, "What separated Mikaela from others was the degree of her commitment (投入) to be the best. Mikaela practiced more than anyone and believed in herself then and now." At age 14, Mikaela began her international career when she raced in the world championships for 13- and 14-year-olds. And she won!

By the time she was 17, she had already won her first World Cup race. "Living away from home four and five months at a time can be difficult," Mikaela says. "But it can also be exciting. I'm getting to see the world." When Mikaela began ski racing in Europe, her mother, Eileen, stayed with her. She worked as her high-school teacher while they were on the road. "She has always been a super-hard worker," says Eileen.

For Mikaela, working hard is a full-time job. Even her off-season is work time. "If you want something, just try your best," she says. At the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, 18-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest slalom skier ever to win an Olympic gold medal.

⒈Environmental Club

Club members are provided opportunities to realize their goals of environmental service. The majority of projects are student-initiated. Last year's activities included: the LFHS Courtyard Garden upkeep, Bike to School Day with free cocoa and snacks, an "eat local" 100mile dinner, recycling solutions for LFHS, beach cleanup through the Great Lakes Alliance, and Earth Week celebrations.

Meetings: First Friday of the month in Room 5 at 7：00 a.m.

⒉Peer Tutoring

Students volunteer to help fellow students in improving their study and organizational skills. Students tutor LFHS and middle school students on an individually scheduled basis. LFHS tutors must have proficiency (精通) in the academic area in which they wish to tutor, but middle school tutors only need general academic proficiency.

Meetings: All tutoring is done on an individually scheduled basis.

⒊Young Idea

Young Idea is LFHS's art and literary magazine. Students of all ages who love writing and art are encouraged to become part of the staff of this award winning magazine. Young Idea encourages all students to submit art and literature works to the magazine, whether they are a part of the staff or not. From September to February, Young Idea meets on Thursdays after school in the Public Room to discuss the pieces that have been submitted to the magazine and provide feedback for the authors.

⒋Scout Buddies

Scout Buddies is a friendship club which helps build friendship among individuals with and without disabilities. Club members participate in a variety of social activities both within the school and in the community. Activities include organizing holiday parties in the school, bowling, going to the movies, and eating out in local restaurants.

Meetings: Monthly meeting dates vary, but in Room 134.

I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. 

"Look at that girl," they said. "Her feet don't leave the ground when she runs!"

Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games. 

Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women's 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.

I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I'd ever have!

"You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet," my classmates all said this to me, including my teacher.

My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, "Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together. " Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us. 

One month certainly couldn't make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.

The day finally came!

The English Club

Cultural exchanges and mutual (相互的) learning are key to improving understanding among people from different nations, (especial) at a time when the world is undergoing great changes, said speakers from home and abroad during the 2023 Beijing Culture Forum (论坛) on Friday. 

Qu Yingpu, editor-in-chief of China Daily, stressed the need (build) platforms jointly for exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, carry forward the Silk Road spirit and promote (share) values for all mankind so as to allow the world to better understand Chinese culture and advance  progress of human civilization. 

Stelios Virvidakis, president of the Steering Committee of the Center of Greek and Chinese Ancient Civilizations, said in a video speech that he hoped mutual learning and cooperation between Greece and China could (strengthen) further and the study of each other's languages, culture and history better promoted. He added Greek universities would have more Chinese language courses and Sinology classes the near future.

Nobel (win) Mo Yan highlighted writers' roles in promoting Chinese culture to the world. For him, quality literary works transcend (超越) time and space, and the ultimate goal of (author) and playwrights is to show human nature and shape vivid human images through stories and other artistic measures. "When a writer has composed a good work, its introduction to foreign readers will be a natural process," he said.

More than 50 project agreements (concern) publishing, film-making, scientific technology, cultural heritage and other cultural undertakings were signed during the two-day forum  began on Thursday.
