Do you know Basketball Day? It is celebrated on November 6th. The date is taken from the birthday of its inventor, Dr James Naismith, who was born on November 6th, 1861. Dr Naismith was teaching physical education(体育课) in Springfield College at that time. And he was told to invent a new indoor sport to keep bored athletes(运动员) in shape during winter.The result, of course, was basketball. Dr Naismith invented the game when he was 30 years old. Since then, basketball has come a long way. It has become the second most popular sport in North America. Now there are about 850 million basketball fans all over the world. About half of them play the game, according to the estimate(估计) by FIBA(国际篮球联合会). The first game was played on December 21st, 1891, and basketball fans decided to take Basketball Day from the birth date of its inventor.

Dirty paper, broken toys, bottles of drinks are all things we don't want at all. They become junk. We make a lot of junk every day. We throw it all away. But junk is not junk for the students in Beijing BISS International School. They make the junk into works of art.

First, they collect paper, old cloth, old CDs and many other things together. Everyone picks up what he or she needs(需要). Then, they make pieces of art out of the junk.

Amy, 10, is a fifth grader. She makes a robot. "I use a broken clock for his face, an old toy for his arms, hands, legs and feet. I use bottle caps for his eyes," she says. She thinks her robot is lovely.

Everyone can use junk to make some new things. They will be good for our life and also for our planet. So please don't make too much junk any more. Let's have fun with junk.
