Today most of kids know more about electronics than adults do, Parents need to stay up-to-date on the latest apps, games, social media platforms and trends (动向),For example, you can't teach your child about the risks of social media unless you understand the dangers yourself.
Create "Technology-Free Zones (区域)"
Establish zones in your house where electronics simply are not allowed—whether they're cell phones, handheld video games, or laptops. . They are the space you could keep reserved for having meals and family conversations.
Set aside time to unplug
Set aside time for your whole family to unplug from their technological devices, Dinnertime and family meeting time are two examples.
Encourage other activities
With a wealth of apps, games, devices and content, it's easy for kids to become dependent on electronics. . Playing outside, reading a book, or even digging out an old board game are just a few ideas.

Stonehenge is hiding a secret: the source of one of its stones.
Researchers know that the prehistoric circle's outer stones come from nearby areas in England. But even after a century of study, the Altar Stone near the center of Stonehenge remains difficult to understand.
The Altar Stone belongs to a group of Stonehenge building blocks known as the bluestones, which came from areas far from Stonehenge. Researchers have found that some of the bluestones come from as far as 225 kilometers away.
"It's a massive job of transport," says Richard Bevins, an earth scientist at Aberystwyth University in Wales. His team is looking for the source of the Altar Stone. Uncovering the stone's origins could suggest which ancient groups of people contributed to the building.
Scientists have been working to find the rock's origins since
1923. A report about the Altar Stone's minerals back then suggested it might have come from a set of rocks in Wales near where other bluestones cane from. Bevins' team decided to revisit the rock's riddle with modern techniques.
In 2021, the team analyzed (分析) the Altar Stone's chemical makeup using X-rays. The X-ray method showed that the Altar Stone has high levels of the element barium (钡). But the stone's makeup didn't seem to match the rocks in Wales.
In the new study, the team collected 58 samples (样本) from a wider area in England and Wales. Of the 58 sample stones, four had high barium levels similar to the Altar Stone. The team then compared the overall mineral makeup of those four stones with the Altar Stone. But none were a match.
"Maybe we've been looking in the wrong area, and maybe we've possibly been looking at rocks of the wrong age," Bevins says, "It's not clear exactly how old the Altar Stone is." So scientists may need to consider stone sources that are younger than the ones they have looked at so far.
(1)、Where do the outer stones of Stonehenge come from?A、Wales, B、Scotland. C、Ireland. D、England.(2)、What does paragraph 7 mainly tell us about the new study?A、Its sample. B、Its finding. C、Its preparation. D、Its application.(3)、What will Bevins' team probably do in the follow-up study?A、Date the Altar Stone. B、Make the 1923 report public. C、Sell the sample stones. D、Move their office to the UK.(4)、What can we learn about the Altar Stone?A、It looks pretty young. B、It was built by the locals,. C、Its origin remains unknown. D、Its makeup is the same as others'. -

Highly emotional music causes networks in the brain to release dopamine. This brain chemical plays a role in feelings of pleasure. It also turns on the brain's motor network that makes us want to move. That physical response to a strong beat can be used to help people with brain-related disorders, research has shown. It aids their ability to time their body's movements, which can help them with speech issues or trouble moving around.
Olivia Brancatisano, a researcher at Bond University in Robina, Australia, studies music and aging. She found that music can offer a number of benefits, from movement and emotion to communication and thinking. That led her to find music-based therapies (治疗) that might aid people who struggle in these areas.
Older people who have dementia (痴呆) may struggle to remember things. But they did better on mental (精神
) tasks while listening to music they knew and enjoyed. The selected music had to be highly emotional and personal, Brancatisano notes, Listening brought back memories and improved their attention. Since then, she has developed the Music Mind and Movement program for people with dementia.
Music helps young people, too. International students in Australia took part in a recent study at the University of Queensland in St, Lucia. Students may often feel lonely while far from home. Those in the Tuned In program, however, learned to better manage their anxiety using music. They also got better at identifying their emotions. That helped them take action when they were struggling.
The benefits of music seem to cover people of all ages. "We use it to meet basic human needs and to improve our emotional states," says Brancatisano, "Now, more than ever, we have the ability to engage in music in a variety of ways. We can use it as a tool in everyday life to energize and comfort us."
(1)、 What is the purpose of the Music Mind and Movement program?A、To help students keep their spirits up. B、To remind us to run as often as possible. C、To benefit old people with a mental illness. D、To show patients how to forget bad memories.(2)、 How did music affect the international students in the study?A、They felt more anxious in class. B、They tended to be less homesick. C、They worked together to write music. D、They developed a popular music app.(3)、What does Brancatisano suggest in the last paragraph?A、It's a good practice to listen to music. B、We struggle to meet our basic needs. C、Music enables us to remain young. D、There are plentiful free songs online.(4)、 Which is the most suitable title for the text?A、Classical Music Is People's Top Choice B、Happiness Is the Medicine of Daily Life C、Both Physical and Mental Health Matters D、Music Can Improve Our Overall Health -

It starts with pencils, Clayton Nylund would like his students to bring them to school. But it's all right if they don't. Nor do they have to worry about notebooks or rulers, Nylund says, "My students are only expected to provide two things for my class: themselves and a focused mind," He finds donors to help with the supplies, and also he pays for some himself.
Nylund, who was recognized Thursday as Hillsborough County Teacher of the Year for his work at Blake High School, is all about helping young peopleexcel in science and technology, regardless of their learning style or background. He noted that "achievement gaps are complicated (复杂的), and so are their solutions."

How to Politely Cancel Plans Over Text
You made plans with friends, but when it's time to leave the house, you just don't have the energy. Or, maybe something else comes up, and you can't make it. But with a few tips, you can do it politely.
◆Text them as soon as possible.
That way, your friends can rearrange their schedules. If you know you cannot make it, try to text a day ahead of time. Otherwise, your friends might be annoyed about the inconvenience. If there's an emergency and you have to cancel the plan at the last minute, that's fine.
◆Be honest about your situation.
If you've encountered a change in your schedule, just tell them what it is. Your friends will be more understanding if they can tell you're telling the truth. Just say things like: "I ran into an issue at work." or "I'm dealing with some family problems."
◆Ask if you can reschedule.
Instead of saying "Let's hang out soon!", pick a new time, so your friends know that you're serious. Besides, share with them what you are busy with. And try to include this in your original message so they know what you're doing right away, and make sure it's a plan you can stick to and you don't have to cancel again.
◆
Add in one more nice thing to make a compliment (赞美) sandwich. After you tell your friends you have to cancel and apologize, let them know how much you appreciate them making plans with you. This will reassure them that you love spending time with them, and it can even help you feel less guilty, too.
A. Start with your appreciation.
B. Thank them for inviting you out.
C. Let them know how terrible the situation is.
D. There's no need to lie about what's going on.
E. It shows that you aren't just blowing them off.
F. Otherwise, you should try to cancel ahead of time.
G. Whatever the case is, cancelling plans can be annoying.

When caught in the rain, we have all run for cover —often to a nearby tree. On the way, we step over short-lived puddles (水坑) and hastily-formed streams, surprised at how quickly the soil changes from supportive and predictable to untrustworthy: slippery, soft, and spongy. At first chance we tend to flee, skipping further observation.
Given that direct observations are often impracticable, remote observation systems are crucial for capturing phenomena that are frequent and unpredictable. However, the Bimbache community of ElHierro observed water running down tree bark during fog events and captured it for drinking, washing and agriculture many years ago. If more contemporary hydrologists (水文学家) had watched fog by trees, forest managers might not have logged (伐木) the Bull Run Watershed, which reduced local rainfall by 30% in
1982.
Water science faces criticism because of a "techno optimism that tries to solve all problems" . In fact, this issue extends beyond water science. An interdisciplinary research team led by John T. VanStan from Cleveland State University argues that scientists should go beyond the laboratory to directly observe weather phenomena. The researchers insist that hands-on observation of storm events is crucial for comprehending the complexities of wet weather.
"Natural scientists seem increasingly content to stay dry and rely on remote sensors and samplers, models, and virtual experiments to understand natural systems. Consequently, we can miss important stormy phenomena, imaginative inspirations, and opportunities to build intuition (直觉)—all of which are critical to scientific progress," said Van Stan's team.
This type of "umbrella science", they warn, can miss important localized events. For instance, in describing rainwater's flow from the forest treetops to the soils, the authors note that "if several branches efficiently capture and carry storm water to the stem, rainwater inputs to near-stem soils can be more than100 times greater." Likewise, water vapor (水蒸气) clouds trapped beneath forest treetop covers may escape remote detection, yet be sensitive to scientists on the ground. At the broader scale, these oversights can affect Ground Earth systems models, which often underestimate forest treetop water storage.
Direct observation, however, has gone beyond making up for the shortcomings of "umbrella science." Van Stan and colleagues see core value in firsthand storm experiences —not only for natural
scientists, but also for students studying climate change impacts on ecosystems.
(1)、 How do people tend to react to rain?A、In a defensive manner. B、In a scientific manner. C、With a wait-and-see attitude. D、With an observation-based attitude.(2)、 Why are the examples in paragraph 2 used?A、To argue that direct observations are unachievable. B、To prove that distance observation systems make sense. C、To justify direct observation that is assumed unworkable. D、To joke about techno optimism that fails to solve all problems.(3)、What does Van Stan's research team argue in terms of hands-on observation?A、It is effortless and precise. B、It is virtual and accepted. C、It is complex yet time-saving. D、It is crucial yet overlooked.(4)、What does the author think of the "umbrella science"?A、It is groundbreaking. B、Its scientific values are not noticed. C、It is insufficient to trace ecological events. D、It involves research methods across disciplines. -

I joined the coast guard because I wanted to help people. Hovercraft (气垫船) are rare and special. They've been discontinued in most commercial operations because they're so expensive to make, but when it comes to search and rescue, they're priceless.
From far away, a hovercraft looks like a normal boat. But if you look under its skirt, the craft is not touching the water —it floats on a cushion of air. That cushion allows us to travel over everything from water to muddy land — and even break through ice. We do all of that as a 70-tonne machine, going a maximum of nearly 120 kilometers per hour. These features allow us to rescue a large number of people quickly, get onto land, and get someone into an ambulance far easier than with any other device I can think of.
The advantages of hovercraft can also make them difficult to handle. We've got a massive vehicle moving fast, sometimes in a thick fog bank up a narrow river. During assignments on other coast guard ships, I had 20 minutes to make changes to avoid a crash. In a hovercraft, I have 10 seconds. You have to have enough situational awareness to make the right decision every time.
People call us for all sorts of problems: missing divers, on-board fires, or even when they've run out of fuel or had a mechanical breakdown. A container ship could burst into flames. We have a strong network here at the base to help everyone through difficult situations like that. Thankfully, we have captains who train us in a safe environment, but you don't ever get fully comfortable. Anything can throw the hovercraft off—maybe your lift settings are off a little, or the wind blows with a bit of extra weight. After several years operating a hovercraft, I'm still learning. Every one of the captains here agrees: you can drive this thing for 20 years and still be surprised.
(1)、 What makes hovercraft unsuitable for commercial use?A、Their safety risks. B、Their poor durability. C、Their low efficiency. D、Their production costs.(2)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、How a hovercraft works. B、What comprises a hovercraft. C、What distinguishes a hovercraft. D、How a hovercraft helps victims.(3)、 What challenge do hovercraft pose to the pilots?A、They have to make faster responses. B、They often face mechanical breakdowns. C、They need more people for decision making. D、They must consider the environmental concerns.(4)、 What does the author think of operating a hovercraft?A、Dull. B、Demanding. C、Enjoyable. D、Effortless. -

The person who set the course of my life was a school teacher named Marjorie Hurd. When I stepped off a ship in New York Harbor in 1949, I was a nine-year-old war refugee, who had lost my mother and was coming to live with the father I did not know. My mother, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, had been imprisoned and shot for sending my sisters and me to freedom.
I was thirteen years old when I entered Chandler Junior High. Shortly after I arrived, I was told to select a hobby to pursue during "club hours" . The idea of hobbies and clubs was perplexing to my immigrant ears, but I decided to follow the prettiest girl in my class. She led me into the presence of Miss Hurd, the school newspaper adviser and English teacher.
A tough woman with salt-and-pepper hair and determined eyes, Miss Hurd had no patience with lazy bones. She drilled us in grammar, assigned stories for us to read and discuss, and eventually taught us how to put out a newspaper. Her introduction to the literary wealth of Greece gave me a new perspective on my war-torn homeland, making me proud of my origins. Her efforts inspired me to understand the logic and structure of the English language. Owing to her inspiration, during my next twenty-five years, I became a journalist by profession.
Miss Hurd retired at the age of
62. By then, she had taught for a total of 41 years. Even after her retirement, she continually made a project of unwilling students in whom she spied (发现) a spark of potential. The students were mainly from the most troubled homes, yet she alternately bullied and charmed them with her own special brand of tough love, until the spark caught fire.
Miss Hurd was the one who directed my grief and pain into writing. But for Miss Hurd, I wouldn't have become a reporter. She was the one who sent me into journalism and indirectly caused all the good things that came after.
(1)、 What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?A、Hobbies and clubs inspired the author a lot. B、The author turned a deaf ear to joining clubs. C、Hobbies and clubs were popular to immigrants like the author. D、The author had no idea what hobbies and clubs were all about.(2)、Which of the following caused the author to think of his homeland differently?A、Stepping on the American soil for the first time. B、Being exposed to Greek literary works. C、Her mother's unfortunate death. D、Following the prettiest girl in his class.(3)、It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that____ .A、Miss Hurd employed a unique way to handle these students. B、Miss Hurd's contribution was recognized across the nation. C、Students from troubled homes preferred Miss Hurd's teaching style. D、The students Miss Hurd taught were all finally fired.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、How the author became a journalist. B、The importance of inspiration in one's life. Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Wandering aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?"
"Oh, yes. . . but I don't have money on me…" she replied.
"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man. "Come in."
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
"What is it?" asked the man kindly.
"Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!"

Twenty years later, when the check of my first story came, I hurried over to Mama's and asked her to put in her Bank Account. She had to admit that she had never been inside a bank.
Actually, Mama's Bank Account mentioned many times by Mama was just (make) us children feel secure.
