It was a pleasant New Year's morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year. 

He looked in every room and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood. 

When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore. 

It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. 

As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. "I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was cheerfully passing on. The man shook his head, saying nothing. "I wish you a happy New Year," repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn't understand or speak the language. "You do not belong to this country, don't you?" asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife. 

How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, "We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers." 

Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.

One day, Peter was wandering through a market with Shirley with some shells in his pocket. Suddenly Peter found his younger sister was lagging (落后) behind. He stopped and looked back, finding Shirley standing in front of a toy shop and staring at something with great interest. The boy went back to her and asked, "What do you want?" Shirley pointed at the doll, wearing a smile on her innocent face. Peter held his younger sister's tiny hand, walking into the shop. He tiptoed (踮起脚尖) to reach for the doll, and like fulfilling an elder brother's duty, gave the precious doll to Shirley. Holding tightly the doll, the sister was very happy.

The shopkeeper was watching everything and enjoyed seeing the mature (成熟的) behavior of the boy. Now the boy came to the counter and asked the shopkeeper, "How much does this doll cost, Sir?" The shopkeeper was a cool man, who had suffered from something in his life. So he asked the boy with love, "Well, what can you pay?" Peter reached into his clothes for money that was intended for these two little kids' breakfast. Having counted the money, Peter put it with care on the counter, asking again, "Sir, is it enough for my little sister's doll?" The amusing scene just in front of the shopkeeper eventually brought a smile to his face. Shaking his head slightly, he replied, "My boy, I am afraid it seems not to be enough."

When it comes to animals in China, one iconic creature springs to mind: the black and white giant panda. This national animal is  (extreme) rare and protected by the Chinese government. In the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, also  (call) Chengdu Panda Base, you'll be able to see these soft, clumsy (笨拙的) creatures carefully protected.

The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion. By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for homo loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in 2020, a successful story — the lions are still considered endangered.

One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions' future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns (图案) that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.

In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. "It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring," says Banerjee. He adds, "It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir's lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead."

Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. "Where tools like SIMBA really shine", he says, "is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals," he says, "otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain."

I had just made a memorable speech, and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance. The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room. I felt the drum rolled in my heart.

The third-place winner was announced. The name was not mine. Then the second-place winner, still not me. At last, the moment of truth came. I was about to either enjoy the warmth of victory or regret the months' preparation. My heart felt closer to the latter.

Losing is a part of life, and I have dealt with it on more than one occasion. However, it was an indescribable feeling to drive a 200-mile round trip, get up very early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors in my group.

I had spent many hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial (200周年) Speech Contest. After not placing (获得名次) in the first year of the contest, I really wanted to compete again. Lincoln had many failures, but he never allowed them to defeat his spirit or ambition, so I was not going to give up on a second contest! I reworked my speech for the following year, but again I did not place.

I couldn't accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on, until I thought about my hero. Never mind the lost prize money and praise—through learning stories about Lincoln, I discovered that I can fail successfully.
