During the vacation, I undertook the challenge of learn a new skill: bicycling. I begin with the basic skills of keeping balance and pedaling and gradual improved my command of controlling and navigating.

I enjoyed me and felt the excitement of smoothly moving on two wheels. Beside, conquering my fears and building my cycling abilities led to a sense of achievements.

In the fact, mastering the skill of cycling reminds me the importance of perseverance, bravery and independence. All the qualities are that we need in our future development. Every daily experience enrich my life and connects me with like-minded individuals.

Sichuanese is China's most thrilling regional cuisine. Although it's most famous for (it) electrifying use of chilies (辣椒) and lip-tingling Sichuan Peppercorns (花椒)，the heart of the local style of cooking (lie) in the artful mixing of flavors.

Sichuanese (cook) specialize in combining hot, numbing, sweet, sour, savory and nutty seasonings (create) an astonishing variety of flavors. Some of these are (incredible) hot, some dishes are mildly spicy and some are not hot at all. 

While Sichuan pepper is  ancient Chinese spice, the chili is a relatively recent import from the Americas. It wasn't widely cultivated in Sichuan  the 19th century but went on to become one of its most indispensable local seasonings.

In Sichuanese dialect, chilies (know) as "sea pepper"(hai jiao) too, a reference to their foreign origins. Locals explain their preference for chilies comes from traditional Chinese medicine,  people are advised to eat plenty of "heating foods" to counter the damp of the local climate. People (visit) Sichuan are often asked, "ni pa bu pa la"— "Are you afraid of Chili heat？" 

I was a lecturer for 10 years when I met my greatest teacher. It wasn't in a 1 but in a hospital. She was my daughter Kelsey.

She was born with congenital cerebral palsy（先天性脑瘫). At four, she still 2 to tie her shoes. It was 3 for her. After three years of 4 , Kelsey made it. Her accomplishment taught me that pace wasn't going to be crucial—achieving goals according to her own 5matters most.

At age 5, she won a battle against cancer. Kelsey 6 through creative play. In the hospital, the game was always "restaurant" with her playing waitress and the rest of us 7 as customers. She enjoyed herself in the 8 for several hours 9 , as if we weren't in the hospital at all. At home, the play turned to "hospital." Her game included medical terms even we adults didn't understand. We'd just play along as she 10 herself in her roles.

At six, she wished to take ballet lessons. I'm embarrassed to admit how much this 11 me. I wasn't just afraid for her body, but for her 12 .

I worried about the 13 she might get from the class. But she wouldn't 14 and the expectation in her eyes 15 all the drawbacks, so we enrolled her in a ballet school.

Kelsey danced with 16 ! Did she fall? Of course. Was she awkward? Very. But she was completely 17 by her situation. The sheer joy of dancing was enough. After four years, she 18 to horse riding. This time, I signed her up without 19 .

Now a seventh grader, Kelsey continues to embrace her life and teach us invaluable 20 about persistence and the power we could never have otherwise.

How to Appreciate Art

Unlocking the meaning behind a work of art is one of the many joys of viewing and collecting. But how do you appreciate art and actually interpret it?.

Look at the art

        , but it's more than quickly glancing at the art and drawing a conclusion. Before stepping back and taking the artwork in, take a moment to identify the artwork's basic qualities：

Is it a painting or sculpture?

Is the texture (质感) rough or smooth?

Does it appear chaotic (混乱的) or organized?

All of these are elements the artist chose when designing the artwork, so they need to be considered. 

Identify the art and artist

Knowing when or how the artwork was made reveals more information. Take for example the famous Guernica (1937) by Pablo Picasso, knowing Picasso composed the painting in response to the bombing of the town of Guernica during the Second World War leads to understanding its anti-war ideas. Even if the historical context of an artwork is not apparent, knowing the year of its creation offers an idea as to the broader events taking place at the time.         .

Use what you observed in the first two steps to think about meanings the artwork could have. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art, but also encourage viewers to come up with their own understandings. In this way, there is no "right"answer that must be reached to unlock the painting's mysteries.

Discover your tastes

Just remember one important fact: You don't have to look at everything. For instance, if you dislike abstract art, skip the abstract. , so don't be afraid to stop and observe something outside of your tastes.

It's breathtaking to watch the delicate spring wildflowers come out from their blanket of leaves, bloom, develop and disperse (传播) fruit, all in a matter of a few short days or weeks.

Although they look fragile, these are tough little plants, each focusing its efforts on spreading its species. They have evolved to have a wide range of flower structures and colors, some with fragrances, attracting many different insect species to assist them in pollination (授粉).

There is one strategy that a surprising number of spring blooming native plants have evolved in common: seed dispersal by ants. As many as thirty percent of the spring flowering plant species in the forests of eastern North America have evolved to take advantage of this situation to benefit themselves. These species have evolved to provide food attached to their seeds to encourage ants to disperse those seeds. This food, called an elaiosome（油质体）, is a specialized fat body whose chemical composition more closely matches that of the insects that ants prefer than it does that of a seed.

When a fruit opens to disperse its seeds, the elaiosomes are an instant attraction for ants. They take the seed with its attached elaiosome back to their nests for consumption there, but they just eat the elaiosome, their preferred food, and dispose of the seed on their trash pile. This tends to be an environment that is rich in nutrients, and will benefit the growth of the new plant. Just to make sure the ants don't eat the seeds in addition to the elaiosome, some plant species have hard seed coatings that ants can't really bite through.

This evolutionary adaptation is somewhat similar to the strategy of plants that have evolved to surround their seeds with fleshy fruits to attract birds to assist them with seed dispersal. Given the fact that there are fewer birds available in early spring to help with seed dispersal, it makes sense that the early blooming plants evolved to partner instead with the ants for this service.

In recent years, labels have increasingly been used by the food industry. Whether "non-GMO（转基因）"or"zero trans fat","no added hormones" or"sugar-free", consumers are demanding more information about what's in their food.

A report by Nielsen found that 39 percent of consumers would switch from the brands they currently buy to others that provide clearer, more accurate product information. Food manufacturers are using the new labels to meet consumers' demand, with an eye towards giving their products a leg up over the competition, and their bottom lines a boost as well.

On its face, the new marketing strategy makes sense. But these so-called "absence claims" labels are harmful both to the consumers who purchase the products and the industry that supplies them. For example, Hunt's put a "non-GMO" label on its tomatoes a few years ago — despite the fact that, at the time, there was no such thing as a GMO tomato on the market. Over the long term, this strategy will have the opposite effect: by creating fear, we run the risk of damaging consumers' trust.

Eventually, it becomes a question in consumers' minds: Should I have ever been eating these foods in the first place? By purchasing and consuming these types of products, have I already done some kind of harm to me?

For food manufacturers, it will damage consumers' trust, which in turn would lower sales for the whole food industry. And this isn't just supposition. A recent study by a group of academics at the University of Delaware found that "absence claims" labels can stigmatize(污名化)food produced with conventional processes even when there is no scientific evidence that they cause harm.

In addition to the likely negative long-term impact on sales, it sends a message that innovations in farming and food processing are unwelcome, eventually leading to less efficiency, fewer choices for consumers, and, ultimately, more costly food products. Therefore, it's clear that food manufacturers must be careful when using "absence claims" as a marketing strategy. If we allow this kind of label fear-mongering to continue, the losers will be all of us.

If you ask 100 people what subjects they wish they had been taught in school, there is a chance that the vast majority of them will complain about the lack of personal finance education. In my case, I did learn a bit about financing while in school — just not in the classroom. One of my earliest lessons on the basics of budgeting came from an unlikely source: the cafeteria.

My lunch budget was a set amount each week. Without a plan, it would be all too easy to blow through the budget long before meeting all expenses. Therefore, my very first budgeting lesson was to make a budget well. A bit of simple arithmetic (算术) helped me determine exactly how much money I could spend each day if I wanted to actually have lunch all week. 

Besides, my school had relatively diverse lunch offerings. You could not only get the common hot school lunch but also find many other foods of varying attractions. As far as I was concerned, what attracted me most was the ice cream. Unfortunately, I couldn't blow my daily lunch budget on ice cream. And I'd already figured out that splurging early in the week made for a rough time for the rest of the week. Hence, I learned my second important budgeting lesson: save for a goal. Because of this lesson, when Friday rolled around, I would have just enough left over for a wonderful lunch and the highly desirable ice cream. 

Nowadays, my budget is a bit more complicated than the lunch budget in the past. Although I no longer have to save my pennies for a frozen treat, budgeting my money today uses the exact same skills I learned all those years ago. Actually, whether you're budgeting for school lunches or credit card bills, the basics remain the same. And it's never too early — or too late — to learn how to make a proper budget.

I had run away from home after finishing high school. My parents had insisted I go to college, but I was tired of school. I hated it. I was determined not to go. And, besides, my father was too strict. I had too many chores to do around the farm. I haled the work!

There had been a quarrel between my father and me. I threw some things into a bag and left angrily, as my father shouted after me, "If you leave, don't come back!" My mother cried openly, and I had seen those tears during a hundred sleepless nights.

Then it was time to write a letter to my father.

Dear Dad,

I'm Li hua, chairman of the Student Union. 

We've all heard that laughter is the (good) medicine, and it's true. Laughter makes you feel better and it's also good your relationships. Laughter brings people closer, and is a (power) tool for making you relax when feelings are running high. Whether with your friends and family, or co-workers, you can learn to use humor (solve) disagreements, lower everyone's stress levels, and communicate in a way that deepens the relationships. 

Humor plays important role in all kinds of relationships. In new relationships, humor can be a useful tool not just for (attract) the other person but also for getting over any awkwardness (尴尬) arising when we get to know each other. In old relationships, humor can keep things more exciting and fresher. 

Sharing the pleasure of humor (create) a sense of closeness and connection between two people—qualities that are signs of strong and successful (relationship). When you laugh with one another, you create a positive relationship between you, acts as a strong buffer (缓冲剂) against stress, disagreements and disappointments in your relationship. And laughter is spreading—just hearing someone laugh often makes you smile  (happy) and join in the fun.

Here we will introduce you to a new kind of car—the first fully electric vehicle that can both fly and 1 on roads. Our "Model A", is the first flying vehicle that is 2 on public roads and able to 3 like a normal car. It also has vertical take-off and landing capabilities. It 4 will be able to carry one or two occupants in its limited space available. We expect to sell the vehicle for 300, 000 each with the first 5 projected by the end of 2025. The FAA confirmed that it has 6 our company a special airworthiness certificate (适航证) , allowing for limited 7 that include exhibition, research and development. 

Numerous companies are working on all-electric VTOLs, which 8 vertical take-off and landing aircraft. However, our vehicle is 9 because of its ability to 10 both on roads and in the air. 

Our flying car will be certified as a(n) " 11 speed vehicle", which means it won't be able to go faster than about 25 miles per hour on a paved road. The 12 is that, if a driver needs a faster route, he/she will use our flight capabilities. Regardless, it also still needs 13 from the National Highway Traffic Safe Administration to go on roads. An 14 automated test flight of a skeleton (框架) version of the car was successfully conducted in 2018, and a full-size prototype (原型车) was 15 the following year. But we still needed the FAA's special airworthiness certificate to continue conducting the necessary research and development.

Two new community initiatives offering the opportunity to borrow everything from sewing machines to party supplies are aiming to reduce waste and consumption.

Tools n Things Library in Leederville, Perth is a community library designed to allow community members to get access to the things they might need around the house instead of buying them in a hardware (五金店) store.

"That's our philosophy — don't buy, borrow. Many people buy things just for a small task at home, and then they won't use them for a couple of years," library volunteer Rex Breheny said.

The project is run by volunteers who founded it in 2019, and after an interruption in 2020 because of the pandemic (大流行病), it has now grown to several hundred members who can come and borrow things twice a week. In a way it is a return to an old tradition of neighbors borrowing each other's tools and forming connections in the process.

Tools n Things Library is the first of its kind in Perth, and another called Share Shed has just started in Bassendean. Its co-founder Renee McLennan said they wanted to expand beyond tools to all sorts of things that people might use rarely, like camping equipment or entertaining needs.

"We're doing the kind of equipment you'd use for a party. Instead of everybody buying disposable plates, and cups and things like that, we've got quality glasses and cutlery (餐具), as well as decorations that people can use for those events that they might have once a year," she said.

The Share Shed is being considered as a way to tackle consumer culture. The world cannot continue to support our current level of resource consumption — at present overconsumption means that each year we consume 75 per cent more than the planet can regenerate.

"Borrowing items and shifting our thinking from an ownership to an access model helps to reduce the number of things that are produced and limits waste. At the same time, sharing the things that we use every now and then is a great way of connecting with people who live locally," Bod Anderson, an officer in Perth said.

What comes to mind when you think about chocolate? A candy bar at Halloween? Ice cream on a hot day?

For Ibrahim, a 12-year-old boy from the West African country of Ghana, chocolate is not about sweet treats; it is about bitter work.  But if they did, we would learn that Ibrahim spends his days growing and harvesting cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made. We would also learn that he is just one of more than two million children who perform this difficult labour instead of attending school. 

To change the harmful practices like this, some farms use an approach called Fairtrade.  It aims to create a different relationship between buyers (chocolate companies) and sellers (cocoa farmers) by encouraging farmers to join together to form a shared business called a cooperative. Because farmers work together instead of competing with each other, they can demand a higher price from the buyers. .

Consumers like you can play a role as well. You can buy Fairtrade chocolate if possible, pressure candy companies to change their labour practices, or ask local stores to sell Fairtrade products.  It is a programme recognizing schools that provide Fairtrade products in cafeterias or include related lessons in curriculum (课程). 

Chocolate has a hidden story that affects children like Ibrahim—children who want a happy future just like you do.  By enjoying Fairtrade products or simply spreading the word, you can make chocolate as sweet for all children as it is for you.

Growing up on a farm, I learned from my parents about the large bees we called mangangava. But in college when I gave a presentation about those bees, I didn't mention their familiar name; instead I used formal terms when describing their adaptations for pollinating (授粉). I was afraid of being judged for expressing my personal knowledge in a science class. But when the instructor pressed me to tell the class whether I'd seen the bees myself and what I called them, my views and my whole career path began to change. I realized my background was valuable, and that my calling was to help educate others like me.

My parents worked on a small farm and I often helped out when I was not in school. They had a close relationship with nature, something they learned from my grandparents and passed down to me. This was why I became interested in biology.

In college, I joined a series of labs to gain research experience, but my interest in pursuing a career as a scientist began to wane after I realized my research was not helping poor people like my parents. As a black student from a rural community, I also felt out of place in most classes. The feeling of not belonging circled in my head. I sometimes thought about giving up.

My instructor's request that I share my knowledge of the mangangava bee changed my view. She saw that tapping into my personal experiences would help me grasp the scientific concepts. No other professor bad shown that kind of sensitivity, which helped me realize I did have a place in higher education and that I didn't need to hide who I truly am.

I'm now a master's student in education, working on a project that explores the connect ion between science and traditional knowledge. I don't think I'd be here if I hadn't crossed paths with my instructor. We need more educators and scientists like her people who can serve as role models and know that the best way to nurture new scientists is to allow students to be themselves.

Headspace

Renowned mental health app, which is only for women. Headspace has launched the Headspace Women's Collection to provide welcome meditation resources for women. These cover a wide range of issues, including sex and relationships, self-worth, and solidarity. A series of body-supportive sessions are aimed at helping women healing after a miscarriage or struggling with fertility.
