It was late spring when my mum and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with mum. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name?" To this she answered instantly, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough for me."

Suddenly, still thinking about mum's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mum nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by, since we had seen so few along the way.

Chinese classical poetry is Chinese traditional poetry (write) in classical Chinese and featured by certain traditional forms. Many poems come from particular historical periods, such as the poetry of the Tang Dynasty. Its existence (date) back to at least as early as the publication of the Classic of Poetry or Shi Jing. (variety) combinations of forms and genres exist. Many or most of these (appear) at the end of the Tang Dynasty. 

Use and development of Chinese classical poetry (active) continued up to the year of 1919, the May Fourth Movement took place, and it is still developing even today. Poetry created during this 2,500-year period of more or less continuous development shows a great deal of (diverse)—classified by both major historical periods by dynastic periods. 

 Of the key (aspect) of Chinese classical poetry, another is its close relationship with other forms of Chinese art, such as Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy. Chinese classical poetry has proven to have a strong influence poetry worldwide. 

On her 71st birthday in July, Sajean Geer went to spread her husband's ashes near Obstruction Point, inside Olympic National Park.

When she finished, she realised she had got 1 . Geer became worried. Though an experienced hiker, she wasn't prepared to be in the park for such a(n) 2 period of time. She only had her 3

Large meals make people full and sleepy.  We want our children to learn, not falling asleep at their desks, so let's keep those lunches on the lighter side. You can do this if you provide them with a good breakfast.

By working beside your children and discussing what they eat for lunch, you are helping them understand the importance of whole foods and the avoidance of junk foods.  As they get older, these good habits will stay with them. They will learn that these types of food are beneficial to them. Try to let them see that the food choices they are making will help them feel so much better.

 I know of one family that actually had the food pyramid on the wall of their kitchen and it helped their children pick out what foods they wanted. Everyone got a chance to decide what to eat, but they had to pick protein, vegetables and fruit. Besides, the mother had a book with recipes for healthy foods. All of the recipes had pictures of what the food looked like. .

Unlike today, when we grew up we played outside, rode our bikes, ran around, and the list goes on and on.  So apart from the above healthy eating choices, you need to plan some activities for your children today other than the television or video games.

In life, there are many opposite things, which cannot be united by many people. But there is always a chance to unite two different things in one work. The following passage will tell you more about the possibility of combining painting and poetry.

Perhaps, it is not a new idea that a great work can be created by combining paintings and poems. In this case, we can unite both things in two ways. The first way is to make the poem as the main inspiration for the painting. It is also possible to write a poem after looking at a painting.

What about the next idea to combine painting and poetry? Well, we can combine both of them on a canvas(画布). You can paint an oil painting on it and then write down the poem on that canvas. I do not know whether this kind of idea has been used for years. But this is quite a great new idea for me. It will make more people love painting and poetry at the same time. You will not need to read the poem on plain white paper any more.

A poem is a good way to represent a story or a thought. It is usually not too long and not easy to understand literally(字面上地). It is a series of words arranged in stanzas(诗节) and lines with rhymes, which are quite changeable. Therefore, combining it with another type of art (such as painting) will be very good. You can get the message of the poem through the colours on the canvas. All you need to do is use your creativity to make a painting with the right colours and with great words on it.

A tiny Alaska village has experienced a boom in tourism in recent years as polar bears spend more time on land than on Arctic sea ice.

More than 2,000 people visited the northern Alaska village of Kaktovik in 2018 to see polar bears in the wild. The far north community lies in an area where increasingly higher temperature has sped up the movement of sea ice, the primary habitat of polar bears. As ice has gradually moved to deep water beyond the continental shelf, more bears are remaining on land to look for food.

Polar bears have always been a common sight on sea ice near Kaktovik, but villagers started noticing a change in the mid-1990s. More bears seemed to stay on land, and researchers began taking note of more female bears making homes in the snow on land instead of on the ice to raise their babies. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologists began hearing reports of the increasing number of polar bears in the area in the early 2000s. As more attention was given to the plight of polar bears about a decade ago, more tourists started heading to Kaktovik.

 "The village had fewer than 50 visitors annually before 2011," said Jennifer Reed, of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. "Today we're talking about hundreds and hundreds of visitors, many from around the world each year," Reed said. Most tourists visit in autumn, when bears are forced towards land because sea ice is farthest away from the shore. Bruce Inglangasak, a local hunter who sometimes offers wildlife-viewing tours, said, "I've been offering polar bear tours since 2004." Many tourists stay several days in the village, which has two small hotels. The villagers have benefited a lot from that. In turn, they provide more effective protection for polar bears with financial support from tourism development.

 German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash(废物) to make sculptures. "We are living in the time of garbage," says Schult. "I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves." Here, Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

"They are social sculptures," he explains. "They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in the time of garbage." So far, Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in Moscow's Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.

 HA Schult's work is unforgettable. Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains modest about his creations. "Artists have to learn every time. We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living."

 Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art? Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't, or whom artists are or should be.

 You can be an artist like Schult if you try. Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing? Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organisers.

Camp Odayin provides fun, safe and supportive camp experiences and community building opportunities for young people and their families this year.

Winter Camp February 15th-February 17th

It is hosted in Amery, a two-hour drive from the Twin Cities and free round trip transportation is provided from Minneapolis and Madison. This camp is for children who have attended Residential Camp or Day Camp before. Campers can experience snowshoeing, skiing and snowboarding. Registration is processed during December & January.

Mums Retreat May 16th-May 17th

Scheduled in downtown Stillwater, Mums Retreat will seek to improve the quality of carers' life. It will include meals, boarding and yoga activities.

Registration will open in April for mums who receive the email invitation from Camp Odayin. If the limit is reached, we will start a wait list.

Residential Camp July 13th-July 18th

Campers will have a chance to communicate with other young people sharing the same grade. Hosted in Lutherdale, it will include swimming, horseback riding and talent shows. The approval by the Camp Odayin director is necessary.

Registration will open in early March and is due on May 1st.

Family Camp October 26th-November 1st

Hosted in Camp Lake, the camp is a two-night commitment for families with children suffering from heart disease, who will benefit from connecting with other families that have similar health, emotional and social concerns. Activities will include drawing, fancy dress balls and movies.

Families that have a child in 12th grade or younger(no minimum age) can attend. Camper registration is available online in late August.

One evening, a workman was exhaustedly making his way home after work, when he stopped to rest by the side of the road. A woman came by, pushing a cart full of flowers. The smell of her blossoms filled the air with sweetness and it seemed to take away the tiredness in his bones and lift his spirits. He had never experienced such wonder from the many blooms of his own garden. "How much must I pay, or what must I do, to have some of your wonderful flowers?" he asked the woman.

 "Oh, sir," she said, "take what you wish for."

"What return must I make for them?" he asked again.

"Your gratitude is enough," she said, "and it's a pleasure to share the beauty of flowers with you."

So the man filled his arms with blossoms and hurried joyfully home. His wife and his children were also glad over the remarkable flowers, for they, too, discovered that the sight of them was a delight and the smell of them refreshed the soul.

In order not to lose his valuable possession, the man planted the blossoms in a small plot of land behind his house. Sunlight and water kept them amazingly beautiful—they still performed their fantastic magic.

Every day, his children took delight in playing in the yard and always sang and danced around the flowers. They all liked the lovely gift their father had received and even invited many of their friends to share this fantastic magic together. When children came to play near the flowers, the man over and over warned them against carelessness and wild play for fear that they would walk on the flowers and damage them. But the flowers remained strong as long as there was enough sun and water to nourish(滋养) them. Nowhere else could the man or his wife or children find such remarkable relaxation from tiredness, such comfort in sadness, such spiritual nourishment as those remarkable flowers provided.

With the news spreading and more people coming to appreciate his treasure, the man became even more concerned about his remarkable flowers.

Shi Jing, also called the Book of Songs, is the oldest existing (collect) of Chinese poetry. A few years ago, when Chinese musician Fang Jinlong read Shi Jing, he was interested in the stories in the poems. Because he couldn't (full) understand the ancient Chinese language (use) in the poems, he turned to experts to explore the poems. 

Then he decided to portray the poems with musical language by inviting composer Ma Jiuyue (create) an album. Titled Music and the Book of Songs, the album was released on Jan. 18, (feature) 10 original songs composed by Ma. They (perform) by Fang and won great popularity. 

The 10 songs are based on 10 poems from Shi Jing, including Qiong Yao, which conveys gratitude to people who are eager to help others, and Swallows, which (send) farewell messages to friends. 

"Young people gave warm feedback about traditional Chinese music they had watched my performance. It has inspired me to create more works for them, which helps popularize traditional Chinese music," says Fang. 

"The 10 pieces sound (enjoy) and easy. For the listeners, it's a fresh way to comprehend poems from Shi Jing," says Ma. "We spent three years working on project. There are so many meanings in the poems and we want to display them as deep as possible with music," Ma says. "It's our mutual goal to have traditional Chinese music reach a wider audience."

In February of 2005, Phil Belfiore was teaching one of Robert Frost's poems Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. He liked it so much that he 1 it on his home answering machine, which would lead to one of the most 2 friendships of his life.

If poetry is not your cup of tea, then you will be afraid of the assignments that ask you to analyse poetry. However, even though you "hate" poetry, your final analysis may find you citing(引用) lines from Emily Dickinson or Edgar Allen Poe. .

Select the poem carefully. In a poem analysis, you will generally be given a selection of two or three poems. You must pick one to analyse. Be careful.  Sometimes the shorter poems are very difficult poems. Often, longer poems are more like stories.

Research the poet. There will be research already performed on the poet you've selected.  Often the poet's personal life has a direct effect on his or her works.

Research the poem. If you are analysing a poem, it is probably quite well known. Research and read about the poem. Other literary criticism can help you in your analysis.  You must come up with a new thought and a new analysis for the poem. Simply copying someone else's ideas will not be enough.

 Your outline should consist of an introduction, a thesis statement(论点), three pieces of analysis, and a conclusion to bring it all together. Put these basic sentences into an outline structure, which will make the writing of the paper much easier.

D. However, remember not to copy, or ignore the original poem.

E. Many students select short poetry as their preference for analysis.

No poem should ever be discussed or analysed, until it has been read aloud by someone, teachers or students. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end. 

 All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling "interpretation(解释)" of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.

 I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than analysing it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is a criticism of life, and a heightening(提升) of life. It is an approach to the truth of feeling, and it can save your life. It also deserves a place in the teaching of language and literature more central than it presently occupies. 

 I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.

Tang Dynasty poets sang for about three centuries in different tones. There were many famous poets living in the Tang period, such as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Li Shangyin. Poems of the Tang Dynasty edited in the Qing Dynasty is a collection of more than 48,900 poems that were written by over 2,200 poets. But it didn't cover all the poems of the Tang Dynasty.

During the Tang Dynasty, poems were recited when lovers walked under the moonlight. Poems were also recited when soldiers fought on the battlefield. People recited them in the open air or at temple fairs.

 Tang Dynasty poets wrote poems to win fame and also to develop their temperament(性情). They poured out deep feelings for their friends and criticised injustice in the society through poems.

 In the Tang Dynasty scholars had to be poets. Their readers were not only people of high social position but also common people. Poets recited poems, women singers sang poems and other ranks of people, including old women and children, read Tang poems. This atmosphere affected foreigners who visited the country at that time. As a result, Tang poetry was introduced to some adjacent countries, like Japan and Vietnam.

 Tang poetry is a most brilliant page in the history of ancient Chinese literature. It's a miracle in the cultural history of mankind. The Tang Dynasty was a powerful empire with a vast territory. It inherited (继承) Chinese civilisation that went back to ancient times, and was combined with the best of other cultures and adopted the benefits of other nations in the world. Tang poetry wasn't the only spiritual wealth created by the Tang Dynasty people. Philosophy and religion, handwriting and painting, and music and dance all gained new peaks of development. Tang poetry, however, was the jewel in the crown and its greatest achievement.

How do you kill your time when you go to work? Most of us stare at our cell phones, and refuse to make eye contact with others. We just read, chat with others online or play games online. Or maybe we're using the time between stops to do our make-up, catch up on emails, or read a few chapters of a book. However, Dina Alfasi takes a very different approach.

Each day she has to travel hours on buses and trains to get to her engineering job at a hospital in Israel. Rather than look at her cell phone in silence, she uses one very special way to have connection with strangers. It is portraits of the people she meets on public transport every day that she is taking. The photographs catch those quiet and personal moments of people readying themselves for the day ahead. Some people lean their heads against the window and go to sleep, some stare into space and have a daydream, and others sit quietly to read their documents or books. Each picture captures one tiny moment in people's lives, ripe with potential for your imagination. It is wonderful for her to look at someone's commute(上下班) and make up an entire story about the rest of their daily existence, from the father travelling with a baby to the woman welcoming a change.

"What inspires me very much are the little moments that happen every day," Dina told My Modern Met. "My work is to tell stories through a single portrait, and it proves that all you need is just to look around and find those magic moments."

2024 TFK Poetry Contest

Call all poets! Time for Kids has a challenge for you: write a funny, rhyming poem. Enter the Time for Kids Poetry Contest! As fewer and fewer children are interested in writing poetry of their own, Time for Kids decides to organise and sponsor such a contest to change the situation.

Contest Rules

(a) an original and previously unpublished poem that has a humorous and rhyming scheme;

2. Judging All entries will be judged by poet Kenn Nesbitt, based on the following criteria: creativity and originality(50%), use of language and rhymes(25%) and appropriateness to the theme of the contest(25%). The length of the entry will not be taken into consideration.

Last week, I saw a program about Chongqing hotpot on TV. I was curious but planned a special one-day trip there with a friend of me. Our fast train was packing with passengers. A attendant gave us some travel brochures about Chongqing. When we arrived, we went straight a famous restaurant and ordered dishes, which tasted greatly. The atmosphere here made the meal all the more enjoyed.        Hotpot is meant for families and friends to sit together, dip everything they like this in one pot, and shared friendship and love.
