Dujiangyan is an ancient irrigation system,  (locate) in the Min River Valley, Sichuan Province, China. It  (build) by a governor named Li Bing and his son, who have been admired by Chinese for over 2,000 years. 

The system consists of three main  (part): the Yuzui (Fish Mouth) levee (河堤), the Feishayan (Flying Sand Weir) , and the Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Channel) . The Yuzui redirects water away from the city of Chengdu while allowing sand and mud  (flow) through the main channel, preventing flooding. The Feishayan controls the flow of water and helps prevent gradual destruction, while the Baopingkou distributes the water  farmland.

Read everything you can.

Most writers are good readers. They read because they love to lose themselves in books. They like the sounds of language and the way that reading a good description can feel as satisfying as winning a race or eating really good food.  . Do you like stories that are fast-paced and full of unexpected twists? Do you prefer to read books with characters who seem like someone you might know? Do you like to feel scared or do you like a story that makes you laugh until you cry? Think about the types of writing you like best, and try to identify the qualities that attract you.

It's easy to forget a good idea if you do not record it immediately. If you get in the habit of carrying a notebook or journal with you everywhere you go, you can write down anything you want to remember. When you are talking to friends in the cafeteria or waiting for the bus, something might give you an idea for a character or a scene in a story. You might have a dream you don't want to forget, or you might just write down the lyrics of a song you love. .

Do your homework.

If you decide that you would like to submit your work for publication, make sure you do your research. If you are sending your writing to a magazine, look through old issues.  If you are submitting to a book publisher, explore their website to make sure your material is similar to (but not exactly the same as) other books they publish. 

Stay positive.

A writer's life can be frustrating. Sometimes it's hard to sit down and write.  This is why perseverance is an important quality for a writer to have.

What do classrooms, computer desks, cafeterias(自助食堂), and libraries have in common? That's the places where students spend so much of their time. Although hours of studying burn mental energy, both your body and mind need physical exercise to function efficiently. 

The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should spend two hours on exercise every day, for health must not be sacrificed(牺牲) for learning. A strong body makes the mind strong. 

It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn't exercise. This and other evidence suggest that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity. 

But experts today do not demand 2 hours of daily exercise. The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that people get at least 60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. 

Walking, jogging and swimming are easy ways to increase your heart rate and improve health. Exercise can also help lower blood pressure and reduce stress. For women, exercise that makes the body and bones bear weight—like walking or running—may reduce the risk of osteoporosis(骨质疏松) later in life. 

You'll likely discover another benefit of exercise as well: greater self-confidence. This may make it easier for you to participate in class and help you perform well in academic and social situations. 

It is generally accepted that blind people are limited when it comes to enjoying beautiful things around them. This month the Utrecht Central Museum in the Netherlands offered an unusual art exhibition called The Blind Spot. This exhibition was accessible to the visually disabled. Sighted visitors are encouraged to wear a blindfold on their eyes as they experience the artworks. This exhibition excited the other senses other than the visual sense. Visitors could look at artworks as expected. Besides, they could also touch and smell them. The show was designed to provide a better experience for museum goers with poor eyesight. 

The Blind Spot recreated existing famous paintings, but with extra dimensions, such as sound and smell. Visitors could even get a "feel" for the art, which included touchable elements. 

Visitor Farid el Manssouri seemed to enjoy his experience. He smiled as he moved his hands over cheese, grapes and bread, part of the representation of a famous 1610 painting by Floris van Dvck. "The first thing that struck me was the smell. I could really smell the fragrant cheese, and I touched it too. " Manssouri said. Manssouri wondered how the food did not fall from its unbalanced position. "That was really surprising to feel. . . I guess it was glued on pretty well," Manssouri said. 

Artist Jasper Udink ten Cate and designer Jeroen Prins created The Blind Spot. They said they were inspired by an experience they shared with a blind visitor at an art show one year ago. "One day, somebody who could not see was there. At the place we served food out of this work, and we helped her touch the artwork. She was blind and she had a lot of feelings. She was touched. So we bad the realization, „Wow, we have something. ‘ That moment was the starting point to actually create this exhibition. " ten Cate said. 

The museum's head Steffie Maas said The Blind Spot was an impressive experiment on the way to more such improvements.

Being self-confident is not easy and not everyone can do it, but it doesn't need to be that difficult.

Adults check their phones, on average,360 times a day, and spend almost three hours a day on their devices in total. The problem for many of us is that one quick phone-related task leads to a quick check of our emails or social media feeds, and suddenly we've been sucked into endless scrolling.

It's an awful circle. The more useful our phones become, the more we use them. The more we use them, the more we lay neural（神经的） pathways in our brains that lead to pick up our phones for whatever task is at hand-and the more we feel an urge to check our phones even when we don't have to.

What we do know is that the simple distraction of checking a phone or seeing a notification（通知）can have negative consequences. This isn't very surprising; we know that, in general, multitasking does harm to memory and performance. One of the most dangerous examples is phone use while driving. One study found that merely speaking on the phone, not texting, was enough to make drivers slower to react on the road. It's true for everyday tasks that are less high-risk, too. Simply hearing a notification "ding" made participants of another study perform far worse on a task-almost as badly as participants who were speaking or texting on the phone during the task.

It isn't just the use of a phone that has consequences-its me re presence can affect the way we think.

In one recent study, for example, researchers asked participants to either put their phones next to them so they were visible（like on a desk）, nearby and out of sight（like in a bag or pocket）, or in another room. They were found to perform far better when their phones were in another room instead of nearby-whether visible, powered on or not.

English teachers, that's who. Modern educators view memorization as empty repetition, mechanical and prescriptive（规定的） rather than creative or thoughtful. Reciting texts from memory, they say, merely drops information into students' minds. It's repetitive learning instead of critical analysis.
