My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D. Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.

It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn't have heavy coats or warm clothes. We didn't have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn't have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn't have a US driver's license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D. , and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.

Since I was three years old, I didn't go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual, Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, "I see you on the way every day. Don't you feel cold without coats?" My father responded, "We didn't expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas." Valerie said, "Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?"

The university I attend has about 3500 students. One early afternoon, I  (walk) around the campus when I found a female student sitting on the walkway with tears on her face. Everyone just walked by her, so I decided to stop  (give) her a hand. I dropped my books and sat down beside her.  turned out that she injured her ankle (脚踝) and was  (able) to walk. So I told her that I would sit with her  she was ready to get up. It only took a few minutes for her to calm down. Then I took her the hand and got her to the nearest hospital.

She thanked me so much for just stopping! Since then, when we run into each other  (occasional) on campus, she would smile and thank me again. And we have become good friends now. I am amazed that just my sitting there,  (offer) support and comfort to a total (strange) would affect her so greatly. She said she was grateful for what I had done,  made her feel that she was not alone in the world.

"It's nice having a friend," said Mole (鼹鼠) to Rabbit as they sat talking in the sun one day.

"Oh, it is!" said Rabbit. "Very useful, too, 1 if you need help. 2 , I think I'd like Bull (公牛) to be my friend."

"But I'm your friend!" said Mole, feeling 3

"Oh, yes," said Rabbit. "You are good for talking to and laughing with, 4 you are too small. When I need help, I 5 someone big and strong like Bull. He would be a very good friend to have. It would be 6 shouting for him when I need help."

Mole went off in anger.

"Oh, well, I need to 7 something," Rabbit thought.

He moved along 8 he found a tiny garden. He had just started on his first leaf when there was a big noise. People were shouting and dogs were barking (吠叫). Rabbit was so afraid and in such a 9 to get away that he ran into the wrong hole. The hole was too small and Rabbit got stuck. He could not 10 at all.

"Help!" cried Rabbit.

"Help!" cried Rabbit. "I'm stuck in this hole."

"No!" cried Rabbit. "He's no good! He's too big to get into this hole. You're just the right 13 ! Please help me, Mole!"

So Mole began digging around Rabbit. He worked so fast that Rabbit was 14 in no time.

"I'm sorry, Mole. I was wrong, " Rabbit said. "I'm 15 I have you as a friend."

And the two good friends set off for home together.

Choose a friend who is honest. A friend that is honest is one of the best friends you can have. An honest friend will keep you from walking out of the house wearing that awful green shirt. They're supportive in their honesty. .

Choose a friend who stands by you in the hard times.  There are all kinds of laughter and joyful moments, and those times make relationships easy. But who are the people that stand by you when times turn hard? Those are your true friends.

Choose a friend who gives as much as he or she takes. We've all had friends that only want things from us. When a relationship is one-sided, we just end up feeling angry. It's not healthy. Choose a friend with whom you feel a balance of give and take.

Choose a friend who likes the things you do. While friendship is full of compromise (妥协)，it helps if you choose friends who share a lot of your interests.  It makes deciding on things to do easier. You don't have to choose a friend who likes every single little thing you do, but you should have some shared interests.

Friends need to laugh together. Choose a friend who can laugh with you rather than at you. Look for someone who will laugh with you at a look or a glance. Those people will be some of your best friends.

Do you often talk with your parents? Here is some advice on how to talk with them.

Try to start your talk with something fun. This will make talking easier. For example, ask them questions about their day. How's their work? They love this.

Make it clear what you want to tell your parents. If they have an opinion, let them finish it and don't stop their talking. Ask them to do the same for you.

Show them respect (尊敬). Listen to them carefully and look them in the eyes.

Be honest. Honesty builds trust (信任). Life is good when your parents trust you.

If your parents don't understand you, that's OK. It doesn't mean they don't love you. Sometimes you have to explain (解释) the things to them again.

When you finish the talk, thank them for listening. Say something like, "Thanks, that helped." It will let them know this is important to you, and make them want to do it more often.

All students have bad times. What do they usually do when they get into trouble?

My mom is like my friend. I talk about everything to her. Whenever I have some trouble, I can get good advice from her. I have another good friend — my diary. It knows all my secrets. Talking with my two friends always makes me feel better.

Laughing helps me when I'm upset. I usually watch funny movies and TV shows. I also love spending my hard time with my best friend Dave. He is humorous and always makes me laugh.

The population is growing fast. There will be many people in the world and most of them will live longer than people now. Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. And computer studies will be one of the most important subjects at school then. 

People will work fewer hours than they do now and they will have more free time for sports, watching TV and travelling. Travelling will be much easier and cheaper. And more people will go to other countries for holidays. 

Work in the future will be different too. Robots(机器人) can do dangerous and hard work. Because of this, many people will not have enough work to do. This will be a problem.
