Have you ever worried that you might smell bad? Well, you do have a smell, but not in the way you think. The human body releases hundreds of chemical compounds into the air every day, and these compounds reveal much more than just our health habits; they can also indicate our health situations.

In 1971, chemist Linus Pauling identified 250 different gaseous chemicals in our breath, known as VOCs. These VOCs originate from the body's metabolic (新陈代谢) processes and are excreted(排泄) through skin glands. While sweat contributes to these VOCs, it only accounts for a small portion of them.

VOCs can reveal a lot about our health. For example, a sweet-smelling breath could be a sign of diabetes. Besides breath, VOCs are also released from our skin, and feces(粪便). A notable case involved Joy Milne, who noticed a change in her husband's scent 12 years before he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Known as "the woman who can smell Parkinson's," Joy has been using her keen sense of smell to help scientists develop a simple swab test to diagnose the illnesses.

Animals with advanced sense of smell, like dogs, have demonstrated they can detect various types of cancer in humans. Although these scents are often undetectable to the human nose, they provide evidence that our bodies emit different scents when something is wrong.

The relationship between VOCs, and our health is still being studied. Professor Morin and her team are investigating whether skin VOC signatures can reveal personal attributes. They have already shown that they can predict a person's age within a few years based on their skin VOC profile.

In one interview, Professor Morin stated, "We are at a relatively early stage in this research area, but we have already distinguished males from females based on the acidity of skin VOCs. We believe skin VOCs can reveal aspects of who we are, such as nutrition, health and stress. These signatures likely contain markers that can be used to diagnose disease."

So, who knows—maybe one day we will be able to detect diseases simply by breathing into a device.

A massive crack through Africa is set to split the continent into two and form Earth's sixth ocean, an entirely new sea from Ethiopia to Mozambique, scientists have warned.

The so-called Eastern African Rift(东非大裂谷) formed at least 22 million years ago but has shown activity over the last few decades. Ken Macdonald, a professor, said, "What we do not know is if this rifting will continue on its present pace to eventually open up an ocean basin, like the Red Sea. Or might it speed up? At the present rate, a sea about the size of the current Red Sea, might form in about 20-30 million years."

Eastern African Rift System (EARS) stretches from the Gulf of Aden in the north to Zimbabwe in the south. Researchers believe EARS is growing larger because two tectonic plates are moving away from each other. It likely formed because of heat flowing up from the hotter, weaker, upper part of Earth's mantle(地幔). Now, a study found that a massive eruption of super-heated rock coming up from our planet's core is driving the rifting.

Geophysicist D. Sarah Stamps compared a rifting continent's different deformation styles with playing with Silly Putty(黏土玩具)."If you hit Silly Putty with a hammer, it can actually crack and break," said Stamps. "But if you slowly pull it apart, the Silly Putty stretches. So on different time scales, Earth's lithosphere(岩石圈) behaves in different ways."

The recent crack in 2018 is being debated among the scientific community, as some believe it is showing the separation in real time, while others believe such progression is impossible. One resident named Eliud claimed he saw the crack run through his home. And he could only collect some of his belongings before his house collapsed. Damages were seen on a busy road in Kenya.

The view from the top was breathtaking. It was 2023 and I had just climbed the Hvannadals Peak in Iceland, almost seven years after becoming paralyzed from the chest down after a climbing fall. My two teammates and I were on our way to becoming the first all-disabled team to cross Europe's largest ice cap, the mighty Vatnajökull glacier, unsupported and unassisted.

It's not the easiest thing, but keeping open lines of communication is primary. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Talk to them about their online presence as early as possible, ideally before they begin to use email, social media, or a smartphone. Discuss what they find interesting online and learning from them about popular websites and apps; this will create understanding and allow you to identify potential risks.

Next, monitor without spying. Most kids learn to understand boundaries, like respecting others' personal space, or not opening the cookie jar without asking. Internet use is no different. It's helpful for kids to have ground rules as to which websites they can visit,which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy with anything that occurs online, they need to alert an adult immediately.

How you handle your kids' internet usage will depend in large part on their age. There are sites and browsing tools meant for younger kids, such as YouTube Kids,which aims to provide a safe online experience for children.Older kids may be allowed more freedom since they want to network and need to use the internet for information-gathering. But you can set boundaries that feel right for you. Just limit access appropriately.

Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them responsibility, shows that you trust them, and reminds them that rules may be tightened if they disobey them. Stay tuned. 

In September, when UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay visited Zhoukoudian in suburban Beijing, which is famous for the discovery of Peking Man living between 700,000 to 200,000 years ago, she was full of praise for the structure that successfully protected Yuanrendong Cave from an unusual rainstorm in July. 

The cave in the central area of the site has so far revealed the remains of 40 individuals. The structure protects the site from the weather, including heavy wind, snow and hail, and its design fits in with the surrounding environment, Qin Changwei, secretary-general of the Chinese National Commission for UNESCO, said at the 2nd World Cultural and Natural Heritage Forum in Beijing on Nov. 17 and 

18. "It provides a reference for the protection of precious cultural relics, and suggests measures for helping heritage sites respond to the influence of climate change." 

Organized by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the Auspices of UNESCO(Beijing), and the China Foundation for Cultural Heritage Conservation among others, the forum brought together some 50 professionals to discuss the protection and sustainable (可持续发展的) development of heritage sites. Scholars stressed the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and offered suggestions for how to solve the problem. 

"Entering the 21st century, climate change has been the subject of in-depth discussion by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. Questions like how to balance between humans and nature, how to respond to natural disasters caused by climate change, and what new challenges this brings to World Heritage Sites, are worth consideration," says Qin. "Solving the problem requires us to unify, making full use of advanced technology, such as space and digital technologies, and jointly developing risk prevention and response plans," he adds.

Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sisterˈs friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.

The carnival is most definitely all about the samba. Itˈs a style of music and dance which has its roots in Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonized (殖民), so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals (和声). Itˈs the kind of music that you canˈt help dancing to, and I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging (摇摆) almost involuntarily.

Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade, the symbol of Brazilian culture, inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship title, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come. So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, Iˈm afraid I canˈt tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade? Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.

Grand Canyon National Park
