This unexpected gesture caught Silva off guard and made him feel honored and13. Inspired by this14, he decided to share his story-he hoped other people could feel some of the15 his family had been offered.

Artists with more variety in their field have a better chance to land repeat hits, says Justin Berg, a social scientist who researches creativity and innovation. But there's a dilemma for artists who want to be popular over the long term. Variety isn't what helps artists land that first hit, Berg reports. It's the similarity of a new song to recent hits.

Berg used a database of about 3 million songs from 1959-2010 and then turned to a system that rates songs on 11 variables (变量), including danceability, energy and key. Berg then noted how closely related hit songs were to the hits from the previous calendar year. He also made portfolios (作品选集) for most of the artists who had at least one hit song, so he studied the variety and novelty (新颖) of the songs they had created at the time of their first hit.

Berg found that musical artists with what he termed low-creativity portfolios that were closely similar to other already existing music were about twice as likely to have early success. But those who had more creative music were more likely to achieve a series of hits.

Since the data end in 2010, the research might fail to show the current state of popular music, according to Noah Askin, a computational social scientist. "Musicians are changing how they write songs to make them more attractive on TikTok," says Askin. "So much of it now is: How memorable is a given song?"

Berg doesn't want his research to play down the achievements of one-hit wonders. "A lot of them in their time were quite famous and successful," he says. "You go out and try to make a song that catchy. It's not an easy challenge."

This isn't just by chance: a barcode contains a checksum to make sure it is read correctly. Most of the digits are there to communicate information. The first two numbers show the country. The next 10 digits are more specific information about the product and who produced it. The purpose of the final digit is to detect errors or changes in the data, such as entering one digit incorrectly. This would give a checksum that isn't a multiple of 10, allowing us to catch the error.

All kinds of systems have checksums: ISBNs on books, which use a similar system based on multiples of 11; UK driver's license numbers, which have two extra check digits at the end; and credit card numbers, meaning a website can tell you have entered it incorrectly before even checking with your bank. They all use variations of the same system, performing a simple calculation with the digits that confirms the number is correct.

It won't eradicate all errors — for barcodes, there is still a 1 in 10 chance the checksum will come out as a multiple of 10 even if there is an error — but it greatly reduces them. It also doesn't tell you what the error is, so all you can do is try again. But it saves time that would otherwise be wasted trying to process incorrect numbers, and it is a clever use of math that makes the whole system work better.

Chad had been in a bad car accident. Since then, he's been dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trying to escape the anxiety and nightmares. "I seemed to be lifeless. I couldn't feel the air. I couldn't feel the grass. I couldn't smile," he said. But when a friend took him fishing, he regained energy and life. "That brought me into the present where I could actually feel the air, feel the currents, that I'm standing in water... It made me feel alive."

It was a turning point in Chad's life. Drawing on the strength he found in nature, Chad discovered his life's purpose and founded Soul River to share the healing power of nature, rivers, and fishing with at-risk inner-city youth.

In the process of enjoying nature, Chad realized that nature itself also needs to be protected, so he developed a program that takes youth into an environment where fresh water, land, wildlife, or local cultures are threatened. He works with conservation groups and Native American communities to determine which areas could use their attention and advocacy. Often, the locations are remote and extreme.

The goals of the program are layered. For the youth, it's an opportunity to learn about leadership, relationship-building, and being integral to a community. Then, there's a conservation and advocacy component, where the group learns about the environment they're taken into, the specific threats it faces, and how they can be a force for good. The experience can help them find their own "Soul River" — their purpose, passion, their connection to the outdoors and to each other.

For Chad, it's a busy, nonstop cycle of planning, preparation, meetings, advocacy, and so on.

Tent Camping

This is the most basic and common way of camping. You can put up a tent in a park, on the beach, in the woods, or anywhere else you like, enjoying a few nights. Tent camping is a great choice for people who don't want to spend a lot of money to get started. It is perfect for families with children because it creates a special time for parents and kids.

Hiking Camping

Hiking camping, backpacking trip, means an outdoor camp, where you will spend the whole day hiking with necessary equipment on your back. It can last anywhere from a few days to several months. It gives you the chance to get closer to nature. In case of an emergency(紧急情况), you'd better share your travel plans with someone.

Survival Camping

In this type of camping, a variety of skills are required to learn in order to survive in various outdoor conditions. You will search for food on your own in the wild and take emergency medical measures in the event of danger. It would be a good idea to have a partner with a wealth of experience in the wild.

RV Camping

If you go camping in a motorhome, you will have more time to enjoy the outdoors. With a motorhome, you have almost everything at home, including comfortable beds, kitchens and entertainment. All you need is to find a suitable parking lot where you can park your car. You can also cook and enjoy food in the car and it will feel great. However, this is not recommended for starters.

I began my journey studying in China in March 20l6, when I came to Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) to get my bachelor's degree in Chinese language. a youth from the USA, I feel that (study) in China is one of the best ways to understand this amazing country. Having studied at BLCU, I have the chance not only (interact) with international students from all over the world but to make friends with local Chinese students.

Through various activities, I was able to develop many friendships with Chinese students. It was through these friendships that I had the opportunity to better understand what the university life of ordinary Chinese student was like. Because many Chinese friends (come) from different areas around the country, I was able to gain a (good) understanding of China than before.

Besides the activities, my (favorite) were the times when my close friends from school would gather in my dorm room to cook and eat. It may sound like nothing special, these were some of my cherished (珍爱的) memories at BLCU.

I (true) hope that more foreigners in China can take advantage of (they) time to experience the food, the culture, and especially the people.

If you want to do well at school, going to class is the first step in studying well. If you miss classes, you will miss what the teacher thinks is important; as a result, you'll miss what is the most likely to end up on the test. So if you want to study well, go to every class.

Take good notes.

Try not to write down everything. Write down unfamiliar terms. After class, review your notes as soon as possible, you can fill in details that you missed and review the material while it is still fresh on your mind.

Talk to your teacher if you need help.

If you are struggling in class, talk to your teacher. They may tutor you before or after class. Most teachers will offer advice to the students who turn to them.

Take part in class discussions.

In order to learn more in class, it is helpful to take part in class discussions. Asking questions and having eye contact with your teachers and classmates can increase your participation (参与) and your focus during the class discussions. If the material is difficult, you'd better read it before class.

Form study groups.

Make sure that everyone is familiar with the material because you do not want to spend time re-reading material to people who do not understand it. Be careful! Sometimes group sessions can become chatting sessions.

Because of the stresses of high school, I felt depressed from time to time. What's worse, I began to eat many junk foods. As a result, I had gained a lot of weight.

My mom decided to take me to work out, and she cooked delicious but healthy snacks for me. However, I broke my word to my mom not to buy high calorie snacks. My mom found my snack wrappers in the garbage. She got really angry and told me something I will remember forever. She said, " My dear, I can forget the fact that you cheated, but you shouldn't. Remember it's not all about losing weight but about your whole life. If you want to achieve something, take it seriously, and persist（坚持）no matter what happens."

Since then, we have been out running each morning, and we do some yoga in the evening. We sing and laugh while running along the empty roads. Day by day, I am feeling better. Exercise is helping to strengthen my body and refresh my spirits. At the same time, my mom and I cook different dishes together. Isn't it amazing that I'm making such tasty-looking foods myself? Cooking brings great joy to me.

These times with my mom have changed my whole attitude to life. I have started to learn the importance of sticking to goals and how to relax. As the famous Brazilian soccer player Pele said, "With strong will, the feet are equal to a pair of wings."

DAY 1 Arrive in Zhaoxing Dong Village

Meet your personal guide at Congjiang train station. Drive to Zhaoxing Dong Village (about 10 minutes). Explore beautiful Zhaoxing Village in the afternoon. Your guide will walk around with you, explaining the style of the Dong wooden buildings, local customs, and the Dong people's lifestyle. And the Dong people's dancing and singing evening show is very enjoyable.

DAY 2 Zhaoxing Rice Terraced Fields Hike and Villages

Drive to Huanggang Dong Village in the morning. On the way, you will stop to hike around the terraced fields. Enjoy great views of the rice terraces and the villages on the mountain slopes (山坡).

Explore peaceful Huanggang Village and Zhanli Village, where you will see more of the authentic culture of the Dong.

Visit Biasha Miao village in the afternoon. Enjoy their traditional dancing and their ceremony with guns.

DAY 3 Zhaoxing Departure (离开)

Visit a batik (蜡染) workshop in the morning. Learn and experience making batik in the Dong style. Make a unique souvenir on your own (with guidance).

Transfer to Congjiang Train Station for your departure.
