Plastics made from living things, or bioplastics, are increasingly popular, but they still make up only around half a percent of global plastic production. This is partly because they are not as strong as oil-based plastics and can't be easily used in common factory production processes.

Now, Dawei Zhao at Shenyang University of Chemical Technology in China and his team have developed a way to produce plastic from bamboo cellulose, which can match or even beat the qualities of many widely used plastics. "Bamboo's rapid growth makes it a highly renewable resource, though its current uses are still largely traditional," says Zhao.

Zhao's team first treated the bamboo with certain chemicals and an acid, breaking down the strong chemical bonds to produce a mixture of smaller cellulose molecules (分子). Adding alcohol then made these molecules rearrange into a strong, solid plastic. Andrew Dove at the University of Birmingham, UK, says the plastic's toughness is similar to commonly used engineering plastics. However, its rigidity means its possible uses aren't the most widespread. "It's not going to replace the main plastics used in packaging," says Dove. "But while it's aiming at a smaller group of engineering plastics, it could still help reduce worries about getting enough material for some plastics we use now. "

Although it isn't as cheap as some common plastics, Zhao's team found that it can be completely recycled while keeping 90% of its original strength, which can lower production costs, making it more lucrative. They also reported that it breaks down naturally within 50 days, although similar claims for other so-called biodegradable (可生物降解的) plastics have not always proven true.

The day of my big solo had finally arrived. Everyone was there: my mom, dad and my little brother. The whole class was dressed up and I had on a new dress. We walked onto the stage and I was front and center. The audience's expectant gaze made me very nervous. Again, my body was shaking. "You can do it, Cindy," Mandy whispered from behind me "I'll be humming (哼唱) softly behind you, take it easy!"

Ms. Jenkins raised her baton (指挥棒) and we began to sing. I could see my mother leaning forward in her seat, her camera already flashing for pictures. My big moment was here. The spotlight circled me in its bright light. Ms. Jenkins nodded and pointed her baton at me.

The 15th edition of Vivid Sydney, Australia's largest annual celebration of light, music, ideas, and food, (light) up the Harbour City under the theme Dream.

From May 23 to June 14, 2025, the festival featured more than 200 events across five (creative) designed zones throughout central Sydney. Among them, Chinese artist Yannesi Siu, the first Chinese artist individually invited (participate) in Vivid Sydney's official program attracted attention with two works combine ancient mythology with cutting-edge technology.

Yannesi's work, Fly to the Moon, drew (inspire) from the legend of Chang'e, the Chinese moon goddess. In her interpretation, the moon symbolized was not only poetic imagination but also the pursuit of dreams.

Her second work, Telephone, told a story of unique and old-fashioned telephone booth (电话亭). Inside it, visitors could speak into the receiver, and transform messages into animated light symbols by AI. This dialogue between past and future was enhanced by China's homegrown HDR Vivid ultra-HD visual technology.

" (root) in the Chinese traditional culture, the piece uses technique to carry meaning," Siu said. "I hope audiences can reflect how technology connects us — not just functionally, but emotionally — across time and space."

This year, Vivid Sydney covered five unique zones — Circular Quay and The Rocks, Barangaroo, Martin Place and the CBD, Darling Harbour, and The Goods Line and Inner City, where visitors enjoyed (immerse) themselves in fantastic experiences over 23 nights.

Stewart's parents were huge animal lovers. At the age of 6, he knew he dreamed of being a vet. After graduation from a Colorado vet science program, he spent the next decade as a vet. In 2008, he worked as head vet at a country-run animal shelter in an area struck by the Great Recession. For four years, he saw pets abandoned and the work was extremely depressing. Stewart said he was burned out with guilt and ready to quit.

Then one morning on his way to work, he saw a homeless man and a dog. He treated the dog's skin condition and the animal was transformed. The owner was beyond grateful and said, "Thanks for not ignoring me and for treating my dog." "That was the moment for me. I got back to saving animals and doing it on my own terms."Stewart said.

A few weeks later he set up a pop-up vet clinic at a soup kitchen, and when clients there suggested he take his services further, his new job as "Street Vet" began. In addition to treating common diseases, Stewart often provides vaccines and general wellness checks. He also promotes "fear-free" pet care. Many of the people Stewart serves are not just grateful for the help but also form a deep bond with him, seeing him as someone who not only treats their pets but also acknowledges their humanity.

"I can dream a little bit that people from all over the world will want to emulate what I do." Stewart said. Right now, he is building a network of trusted volunteers, technicians with hospitals and clinics. "These are all people who just reached out and said." "I'm inspired by what you do. How do I do it?" he said.
