I tried something new

Chinese comedienne and actress Jia Ling, known for her bubbly persona and her bright smile,(be) pretty low-key in the past year-and-a-half. The plus-sized star recently revealed that she was losing weight for  upcoming role during her gap time.

Assess yourself.  Your values, interests and soft skills, in combination with your personality type, make some occupations a good fit for you, and others completely inappropriate. Use self-assessment tools and career tests to gather information about your traits and generate lists of occupations that are suitable. 

Make a master list of careers. You probably have several lists of occupations in front of you at this point — one generated by each of the self-assessment tools you used. 

Explore the careers on your list. At this point, you'll be thrilled that you have managed to narrow your list down to only 10 to 20 options.  Find job descriptions and educational, training and licensing requirements in published sources. Learn about advancement opportunities. Use government-produced labor market information to get data about earnings and job outlook. 

 Finally, after doing all your exploration, you are probably ready to make your choice. Pick the occupation that you are most satisfied with based on all the information you have gathered. 

Realize that you are allowed to do it if you change your mind about your choice at any point in your life. Many people change their careers at least a few times. 

When fireworks are lit in celebration of the New Year, wild birds often experience lasting harmful effects. An international team of researchers tracked Arctic migratory(迁移的) geese as they traveled in Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands over eight New Year periods to study the impacts of fireworks. Data from 347 geese showed that birds suddenly leave where they are sleeping on New Year's Eve and fly farther away from where people are. 

Geese' lives were disturbed by the noise and flashes and these geese ended up resting two hours less and sometimes flying nonstop as far as 310 miles compared to the nights when there were no fireworks. 

Geese spend their winter in Western Europe to escape extreme Arctic winters in their breeding grounds. Still, winters here are maybe not severely cold, but rather dark. As predators(食肉动物) are around in the dark, geese can only search for food in the light hours. During the night, they usually settle on small lakes to save energy and rest in relative safety. During New Year's Eve, geese are heavily scared, as the fireworks sounds and flashing lights are unexpected to them and they view them as a threat to their life. 

But their changed behavior didn't end with the fireworks. The geese didn't return to their original sleeping locations and spent more time searching for food to store energy for days after the celebrations ended. 

The researchers hope that the findings will be used to improve fireworks management. They want to provide decision makers with real numbers to support their discussions. As already stated above, they suggest that some measures should be taken for geese to escape fireworks' disturbance during New Year's Eve—nationwide regulations regarding nature reserve areas and some centralization of fireworks displays, as well as lighting public fireworks in urban areas away from where the geese live. 

Today, the world's diversity (多样性) of food crops is quickly decreasing. But scientists around the world are taking action. They are building seed banks. At seed banks, scientists store the seeds of many different crops. 

There are now about 1，400 seed banks around the world. However, some banks are in warm countries. If the electricity fails, the seeds will get too hot and die. Other seed banks are in countries troubled by war. Sometimes people damage the seed banks. If this happens, valuable seeds can be lost forever!

The organisation Global Crop Diversity Trust decided they wanted to deal with this problem. So, they decided to build a global seed bank. This seed bank would contain a back－up, or extra copy, of all the world's seeds. Smaller seed banks would still collect and keep local seeds. But they would also send copies of their seeds to the global bank. 

Scientists from the Global Crop Diversity Trust chose the cold, snowy mountains of Svalbard, Norway to build the global seed bank—the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (斯瓦尔巴全球种子库)．Organisations，farmers, or local seed banks store their extra seeds there. And the people who place their seeds in the vault are the only people who can take them out. They pay to ship their seeds to Norway, but it does not cost them any money to store their seeds. The Global Crop Diversity Trust pays for this. 

Cary Fowler is a scientist who heads the Global Crop Diversity Trust. He said, "If the Seed Vault simply supplies seed banks with copies of seeds that those banks lost by accident, the Seed Vault will be worth more than it cost. "

By my mid-20s, I'd finished my master in psychology, and I was working in Dublin as a health researcher. It was mostly data and statistics work staring at a screen. I was earning more than most of my friends, living the city life, going out at weekends. I had a good pension (养老金) and annual leave but it caused a lot of anxiety and worry. I was really unhappy.

I started taking courses in mountain skills and wilderness first aid, and by August I was working my usual job in the week, and I was a climbing club leader at weekends. I loved connecting with nature, connecting with other people. 

Through all this, I learnt about the whole field of nature-based therapies (疗法). It was the perfect fit to combine my psychology background with my passion for the outdoors. I began taking courses in wild therapy, forest bathing and ecopsychology. I left my government job and in July 2020 I launched my business Nature Therapy Ireland, which is booming now. 

I'd thought I'd always live in a city but last year, I moved to Tipperary to live at the foot of a mountain, surrounded by nature. If I'm feeling stressed, I can step outside in my bare feet and stand on the grass to ground myself. In Dublin, the front door felt like a barrier—I had to have my keys, my phone, my jacket before I could even go out and find a green space. My life now is leading nature connection hikes and forest bathing walks. My salary has halved for the moment but I've adjusted. I've never looked back.

When I was 12 years old, my grandparents passed away. I was really close to them, and losing them was the hardest thing I've ever had to go through. I couldn't eat, sleep, or think; I felt like I couldn't even breathe. It was as if my whole world had fallen down from under me, and I fell into this huge hole of depression（抑郁）.

Although I was battling depression, I was determined to make my high school years the best of my life. It was difficult to be happy, but I had to try. I joined Women's Choir. Mr. Wright was the choral director and he was so funny that the first day, I just knew I had made the best decision of my life.

As the year progressed, I loved chorus more and more. I began to smile again and really enjoy life.

Then one day that all changed. My friends —or those that I thought were my friends —started talking about me behind my back. I was hurt, and I sat by myself. Mr. Wright came over and asked what was wrong. The look in his eyes told me that I could trust him. Trying hard to fight back tears, I told him the whole story. When I finished, he nodded and told me, "If you never learn anything from me, learn this: No one is worth stealing your joy."
