After a few months of borrowing his old white Ford and my constant begging, dad finally agreed it was time for me to own my very first car. So we headed straight to the used car section. A little cute car caught my attention. My dad wanted to get it thoroughly checked out before purchasing it, but not me. I was in a hurry. "Daaaad. Let's just pick one already. I want this one..." Finally, he had to give in.

No sooner had I driven off the lot than the problems started. First, the overheating. Next, the knocking coming from the engine. But oh no! I was not to be stopped. I just wouldn't look at it. Annoying little sound coming from the engine? I could just turn up the radio. Problem solved!

Ignoring all the warnings, I was heading out the door to a Friday night party in my college town. I had been looking forward to it for weeks. But as the night arrived, an unexpected winter snowstorm came along.

My dad tried to persuade me to stay at home. But I was not listening. I was an adult, thank you very much. I was not about to miss that party. I swung by and picked up my friend Carrie and the two of us started on our thirty-minute drive in the snow.

Just as we hit a long stretch of somewhat deserted highway, something happened. My precious little car spit and sputtered (发出) its final breath... and died! Luckily, I had just enough time to move to the side of the highway, just barely over the line onto the shoulder, before it came to a complete stop.

And there we were. Two eighteen-year-old girls stranded (使滞留) on the side of the road on a snowy dark night. We called 911 for help, but unfortunately the signal was so weak that we could hardly hear each other. After several vain attempts, we began to wave down passing cars, but with no luck.

The Best Ways to Get Good at Any Sport

If sports are something that interests you, it stands to reason that you would want to be good at them. Succeeding in a sport takes skills, and skills take patience and determination. Skills alone may take you far, but you'll never go all the way unless you have the right attitude and team spirit to back it up.

    Join a sports team.

If you want to become a sports superstar, joining a team is a good way to start. Even if your skills are currently low, joining an amateur league will sharpen up your skills. Sports teams are everywhere, and most of them are free to join. If you go to school, you should go for team tryouts when they're happening.

Practice until your skills become second nature.

If you're wondering at what point a skill becomes mastered, it is when you're able to do it automatically and without thinking. This is called the autonomous stage, and it's where you want to be at if you want to play sports competitively. When you're in the fight of a game, you won't have time to think everything through, so practice until it's all automatic, so you'll know you're ready.

Set ambitious but realistic goals for yourself.

Instead, you should take a look at what you are, and figure out where you think you would like to be. Give yourself a suitable amount of time to achieve that goal, and break it down into smaller parts if the goal is especially big.

One of the biggest reasons people join sports teams in the first place is to make friends with new people. Chances are you'll develop friendships with at least some of them. Making these friendships a priority is a good move if you want to become great at sports. You can practice together on your own time. The morale (士气) boost of playing with friends helps as well.

    A. Set your sights wide.

    B. Promote friendships with other players.

    C. Recreation centers are often host to sports teams as well.

    D. This doesn't mean saying you'll be professional within a year.

    E. But if the desire is intense enough, you will do anything to realize your dreams.

    F. Given enough time and repetition, a skill will eventually fall under this category.

    G. However, you need to think about other things if you want to be a good sports player.

When we are tired or injured, we often go to bed earlier to recharge and mend our bodies. That's because we often think that night is a golden time to deal with stress or injuries. But is it true?

Nathaniel Hoyle, a scientist of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, has been leading a study into this topic. The team discovered that fibroblast cells(成纤维细胞) in the body switch off at night. These cells help close up a wound after the skin is broken and lay a foundation for new skin to grow. Why exactly are these cells less active at night?

It's all to do with your body's circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythm—a 24-hour internal clock that helps your cells do their jobs on time. New Scientist reported that a group of 30 genes that control the fibroblasts worked only daytime shifts, causing the slower healing process at night.

To test its theory, the Cambridge-based team examined data from the International Burn Injury Database, which records details of burn victims around the world. This analysis revealed that nighttime burns, on average, took 11 more days to heal than burns during the day.

A similar result occurred while experimenting using live mice. Those that were cut during night-time hours recovered more slowly than those during the day. "You can see by eyes, when the cell is wounded only 8 hours apart from each other, in a different circadian periods, the daytime wounded ones take off, and the nighttime ones drag," research team member John O'Neill told Science Alert.

He added, "The time-varying response may be an evolutionary adaptation. As people are more likely to sustain injuries when awake than when sleeping, perhaps our bodies are prepared to respond more quickly in the daytime." He went on to say that it could be beneficial to schedule surgeries in time with people's circadian rhythms, earlier for early birds and later for night owls, in order to lessen recovery time. However, in any case, it might be best not to use anything sharp once the sun goes down.

(1)、What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A、To explain how we recharge our bodies. B、To arouse the interest of the readers in the topic. C、To prove that everyone suffers stress and injuries. D、To introduce a new discovery for dealing with stress.
(2)、What do the researchers find during their research?
A、Burns take the same time to heal regardless of their cut time. B、Fibroblast cells boost the healing by working nighttime shift. C、Mice respond differently in the healing process from humans. D、A body's circadian rhythm matters in waking up fibroblast cells.
(3)、What can we learn according to John O'Neill?
A、People tend to bear pain more when they are asleep. B、Sharp knives are not suggested in the middle of the day. C、Night owls operated on in the nighttime may recover sooner. D、Evolution adaptation causes people's time-varying responses.
(4)、What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A、Why We Heal Injuries Better in the Daytime B、A Research Offers Clues to Treating Injuries C、How We Heal Wounds and Injuries Effectively D、Scientists Unlock the Secret to Avoiding Injuries

We've all heard the phrase "use your time wisely" in our lives. How can we use our time "wisely"? In an increasingly urbanizing world, we are busier, required to do more to get into college or other higher academic institutions, or to get a job and do well at it. Because of that, things we do to relax, like reading a book, going out with friends or napping, are becoming rarer.

Doing something that doesn't quite directly help you reach your goal (like the things for relaxation) is often viewed as "wasting your time" because we only have limited time. But even if relaxing or having fun takes time away from being "productive", they shouldn't be considered "a waste of time". If we don't do things for fun, what is there to enjoy in life?

There have been numerous studies indicating how relaxation and going out with friends can improve your mental and physical health. Being able to take part in an enjoyable hobby or spend time with someone you enjoy being around can help release "feel good" hormones (荷尔蒙) that can reduce some stress in your daily life, thus improving physical health in the long run.

But of course, as a part-time hypocrite (伪善者) on this topic, sometimes when I find myself enjoying a book, playing a video game, or scrolling on TikTok, I get this awful feeling instantly after that I could have used that time to do something productive like taking textbook notes or finishing an assignment. Or maybe I would go out with my friends during the day and come back to my dorm just to think about how I could have used that time to study for an upcoming exam. We've all been there.

However, even if it isn't evident, doing those little things prevents us from burning out too fast. It creates some positive memories hanging in your mind that will hopefully get you through a tough patch. You need to relax in order to be productive later on. The popular concept of a work-life balance also tells us you should do things that you enjoy to keep the balance, and therefore, would not be considered "a waste of time".

(1)、What is often thought as "a waste of time" according to paragraph 2?
A、Hanging out with friends. B、Preparing for a business trip. C、Training for school basketball matches. D、Reading for an essay assigned last week.
    (2)、How does relaxation benefit us?
A、It improves our health shortly. B、It develops our hobbies greatly. C、It releases hormones to develop our stress. D、It strengthens us physically and mentally.
(3)、What does the underlined sentence "We've all been there." mean?
A、We've taken the exam. B、We've been somewhere already. C、We all have had the same experience. D、We all have come back to the dormitory.
(4)、What's the author's attitude toward "wasting time"?
    A、Doubtful. B、Supportive. C、Disapproving. D、Conservative.

When my Dad visited me in London recently, I took him for a classic English afternoon tea at The Ritz Hotel. The thought of showing him a piece of authentic British life excited me for weeks, so when we finally sat down in the Ritz's elegant tearoom, with the sound of a pianist in the background, I was thrilled.

I looked at the polished silver tea stand topped with finely cut sandwiches, freshly baked scones (烤饼), and mouthwatering pastries and teacakes. I was ready to dig in. Then I looked at Dad and a trace of nervousness flashed across his face. He carefully copied what I at e and how to use the knife and fork, and from time to time anxiously looked up at the waiter in his bow tie who was serving our table.

When we got to the scones, Dad took a big bite and remarked how delicious it was. He asked me to explain how the British eat scones, so I supplied him with details about the custom of breaking scones into small pieces, spreading cream and strawberry jam on top, before consuming each piece in one mouthful.

"Oh, why did you not tell me earlier?" Dad's face turned red in embarrassment, suddenly realizing his mistake. For the rest of the scones session, he busied himself with neatly spreading the cream and jam like an obedient (听话的) child.

Suddenly, I felt a complex mixture of happiness, sadness and loneliness. Growing up, Dad was my hero, my mountain. I still remember flying into his arms after school at the kindergarten gate. Through the sound of his voice, I learned to feel and understand the world.

After moving to London alone, I have learned to achieve academic grades, found a job, and started a new life all by myself. But I did not fully realize how much I had grown up, until I saw how dependent Dad was on me in London. Although he is still a mountain in my heart, I realized I have in the meantime built a strong mountain of my own. And by being away from Dad's protective wings I have come to understand more of myself and to find my own place in the world.

(1)、Why did the author take her father for a classic English afternoon tea?
A、The food in the restaurant was delicious. B、She wanted her father to experience real British life. C、Her father was deeply attracted by the elegant tearoom. D、She intended to introduce an excellent pianist to her father.
(2)、Which of the following best describe the author's father when eating scones?
A、Disappointed and painful. B、Embarrassed and desperate. C、Nervous and cautious. D、Sorrowful and helpless.
(3)、What did the author realize after the experience?
A、She had a happy childhood. B、She had achieved a lot in academic area. C、Her father was not her mountain any more. D、She should be the person for her father to rely on.
(4)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、An eating experience changed a father. B、Eating with Dad spoiled our relationship. C、Dining environment was vital for a restaurant. D、Living alone abroad enhanced a person's independence.

Yesterday afternoon I went to a local park. It happened that I saw a touched event. At that time, some people were boating on the lake, among them was a happy family of three. They were taking photos while suddenly the daughter fell off the boat into the water. She was struggling and parents cried out, "Help! Help!" It was obvious that they could not swim at all. From nearby a young man immediate rushed to the lake. With his clothes still off, he jumped into the water and quickly swims towards the girl. Carrying to the lake side, she was saved at last! They were so happy with tear in their eyes! Before they could thank for the young man, he had disappeared!

Crops like rice, vegetables and corn may yield up to four times higher productivity when grown in urban environment instead of rural areas, according to a recent study.

So far it (think) that 15-20 percent of the world's food is cultivated in urban settings. However, a lot more data is needed (figure) out whether expanding cities can support their own food needs. With urban living becoming increasingly common worldwide, researchers aimed to investigate possibilities of urban agriculture as a way to improve the food supply.

there is no clear winner in terms of the most suitable urban growing method for crop cultivation, the study finds that certain types of crops can be suited to specific urban growing methods. For example, hydroponic (水培的) environments prove more suitable for watery fruits and leafy greens. Crops like lettuces and broccoli may be  (natural) suited to being grown vertically.

The cost-effectiveness of urban farming is something  remains uncertain at this moment. The cost of running climate-controlled environment for growing food and the cost of employing any staff  (require) in urban farming are both factors to consider.

The development of urban agriculture could be (benefit) in many different ways—from being better equipped to survive the next pandemic to (reduce) the environmental cost of food production.

If you're looking for a fun way to see the country, traveling in a motor home (房车) is an excellent way to go. Driving a motor home is different from driving most other vehicles and being aware of those differences can make your journey safer and more enjoyable. Keep these preparations in mind before you head off.

The first thing is to check your vehicle. No matter what kind of vehicle you're driving, you need to make sure it is roadworthy before you pull out of your driveway. Once it gets a clean bill of health, you can pack it up and hit the road with confidence.

Chances are you won't have a lot of problems driving a motor home on the highway but navigating smaller streets can be different and a real challenge in such a large vehicle. Put in plenty of driving practice before you leave home and learn how to use all of your mirrors to determine your position and reverse (使倒转) the vehicle safely.

A reversing camera might help along the way. If your motor home doesn't already have one, consider installing a reversing camera. And if you're traveling with passengers, you can always ask them to check behind the vehicle before you reverse.

Consider forming a driving group. Chances are you'll meet other motor home drivers on your road trip, particularly if you're traveling down a popular road trip route. If you're all going the same way, consider teaming up with the drivers you meet at campgrounds, local attractions and restaurants, and forming a motor home group. Traveling with other drivers is fun, and it can also improve safety:

    A. Practice is needed before you hit the road.

    B. You should also know how to handle difference when driving.

    C. A large team of motor homes will be easier for other drivers to spot.

    D. You gain a sense of belonging to a road community while enjoying your trip.

    E. In a sense, you get to take your house with you, and you can stop anywhere you want.

    F. With this handy tool, you will find it a lot easier to pull into those tight parking spaces.

    G. Whether it's your own motor home or you are just renting one, don't forget a pre-trip full check.

A colorful colony of photosynthetic (光合的) cyanobacteria, known as blue-green algae (海藻) , have successfully powered a computer microprocessor for more than six months, according to a study published in the Journal Energy & Environmental Science.

During a pandemic lockdown, the algae-computer system was placed in the window of biochemist Paolo Bombelli's home. What he saw next really blew his mind: it sat there from February to August 2021, and all the while it was working. And even after the microprocessor has been disconnected, the cyanobacteria device continues to produce current. "Given the right conditions of light, temperature and water, I cannot predict when it will stop," said Bombelli.

Cyanobacteria harvest energy from sunlight and make it into food for themselves. For this study, the researchers put the power-providing microorganisms into a plastic and steel enclosure, about the size of an AA battery, along with an aluminum anode (铝正极) . Throughout the experiment, the connected microprocessor was programmed to do a bunch of calculations, and then check its own work. It did this in a 45-minute period, followed by 15 minutes of standby, continuously for months with the cyanobacteria unit as its only power source.

Even though the algae rely on a light source to feed, the bio-system continued to produce enough power to run the microprocessor in the dark. The scientists basically put down this phenomenon. to leftovers. When there was light, the cyanobacteria cooked up an over-abundance (过剩) of food, and when it was dark the microorganisms kept chewing on the extras.

According to Chris Howe, senior author of the study, the results suggest that the little bio-based battery substitute could serve as a way to power small electronics without rare earth elements, which are in short supply and under growing demand. Plus, the system could also help bridge the electricity divide, providing another power supply for people in rural areas or low-income countries.

Though the experiment's results are promising, it's important to keep in mind that the computer processor tested uses very little energy requiring only 0.3 microwatts to run. More research is needed to know exactly how much the tiny AA battery-sized device could scale up. Howe said, "Putting one on your roof isn't going to provide the power supply for your house at this stage."

(1)、Which of the following facts about the battery surprised Bombelli?
A、It can work without water. B、It needs much light to work. C、It works for a long time. D、It can stand high temperatures.
(2)、What can we learn about the bio-system from Paragraph 4?
A、It can store light for later use. B、It can work normally in the dark. C、It consumes little food in the dark. D、It can help people cook delicious food.
(3)、 What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A、The limitations of the battery in practical use. B、The uncertain future of the bio-based battery. C、The challenges of producing the bio-based battery. D、The possible application of the bio-based battery.
(4)、What will the research probably focus on next?
A、How the device will work on the roof. B、Whether the device's size can be reduced. C、Whether the device can play a bigger role. D、How the device will adapt to new environments.

Saving Us: A Climate Scientist's Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World is one of the most important books about climate change to have been written. Hayhoe is a gifted public speaker and Saving Us is a follow-up to her awesome TED talk in 2018, "The most important thing you can do to fight climate change: talk about it."

One of the many refreshing aspects of this book is that Hayhoe recounts both her successes and her failures to communicate, through which she has gathered evidence about what works and what does not. Much of the book's advice is common sense, all backed up not just by Hayhoe's experience but also with convincing research by psychologists and social scientists.

Hayhoe advises against trying to engage with a small minority, the "Dismissives", who "angrily reject the idea that human-caused climate change is a threat; they are most receptive to misinformation and conspiracy theories (阴谋论)". There is a warning that offering up more facts about climate change can actually increase polarisation (两极化) among them.

The book includes amusing examples of her encounters with the "Dismissives", almost entirely older men—including an engineer who was unconvinced about the evidence but with whom she was able to establish mutual (相互的) respect through a shared passion for knitting (打毛线衣) —and is packed with inspiring accounts of how she has won over even the most suspicious of crowds. Her motto is "bond, connect and inspire", which represents her approach of always looking for points of commonality.

She also tells of a man who approached her after an event in London in 2019. He had been so inspired by her TED talk that he had started to speak to everybody he could in his neighborhood of Wandsworth. He showed her details of 12, 000 conversations that had taken place as a result, claiming that they had helped to convince the government to declare a climate emergency and to switch investments from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

And so, while it may feel difficult to influence the outcome of the COP26, Hayhoe's uplifting book makes a persuasive case that we can all do our bit to bring about success just by talking about the issue.

(1)、What does the book mainly focus on?
A、Promoting people's insight into climate change. B、Introducing presentation skills with TED talks. C、Developing critical thinking through literature. D、Sharing communication tips on climate change.
(2)、Which of the following best describes the advice in the book?
A、Humorous but one-sided. B、Novel and interesting. C、Well-based and workable. D、Serious and hard to follow.
(3)、How did Hayhoe win over the "Dismissives"?
A、By changing their political identity. B、By challenging their fundamental beliefs. C、By seeking common ground built on a shared interest. D、By providing more facts about climate change.
(4)、What does the author intend to say by telling the story in paragraph 5?
A、The shift to clean energy is unstoppable. B、Conversations can influence climate decision-making. C、Policymakers turn a blind eye to market changes. D、We should call on people to prepare for the climate crisis.

Eduardo reached into his backpack, searching for his cell phone. He was scared of having to spend the spring break at Aunt Letty's farm. Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.

"So have you ever ridden a horse?" Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. "Hmmm, no," he answered. "Well, we've got a nice calm horse I think you'll like. Hercules sounds like a beast, but he's basically a gentle giant — big, but kindhearted!" she said, smiling. Eduardo glanced at his aunt, annoyed that he was expected to work. He tried to text a friend but there was no cell reception.

The next few days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with transporting hay, cleanup, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and inhaled (吸气), "Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!" Eduardo, exhausted from his chores, was unable to appreciate his work.

On the third day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, "It's time to meet Hercules." She led Eduardo into the stables. Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable!

Aunt Letty held her hand open for Eduardo to take. Reluctantly, he let her guide his hand toward Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.

"It feels like velvet (天鹅绒)!" Eduardo beamed. An hour later, Eduardo was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.

That night, as they headed toward the house, Eduardo was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, "Take a breath of that sweet country air!"

(1)、Why did Eduardo's parents send him to the farm?
A、To get him close to nature. B、To better his views on life. C、To change his attitude to Aunt Letty. D、To keep him from using a mobile phone.
(2)、What can we infer about Eduardo from the last four paragraphs?
A、He discovered the horse was wild. B、He realized hard work would pay off. C、He found Aunt Letty demanding but inspiring. D、He came to appreciate the life on the farm.
(3)、The writer organized this passage ____.
A、in space order B、in time order C、from general to specific D、from specific to general
(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A、Aunt Letty's Farm B、A Remarkable Horse C、Sweet Country Air D、Busy Country Life
