Sammie, 14, knows there's nothing worse than feeling left out. For years, she's been helping kids who feel lonely make friends. What she was doing was running the Buddy Bench program. She started it when she was in the third grade, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The idea was that anyone at school who was feeling lonely could sit on the "buddy bench." The idea quickly caught on. The bench brought kids together. Since then, Sammie has helped communities all over the country set up buddy benches.

Sammie got the idea for the Buddy Bench program at summer camp in 

2017. She thought it would be cool to have a buddy bench in her school, so when she got home, she presented the idea to her principal, her teachers, and her parents.

Getting approval for the project was just the first step. "There have been a lot of small challenges, like money," Sammie says. To reduce costs and be eco-friendly, Sammie decided to make the bench out of recycled material. So she rallied her community to gather bottle caps. Sammie received encouraging responses. With people working together in an orderly way, she soon collected more than 1,200 pounds of bottle caps.

Sammie says the effort has helped her overcome personal challenges. "I used to be really, really shy," she says. "I'm definitely more outgoing now." She has also learned to acknowledge her limits, and to take breaks when working on a big project.

"You don't have to be an adult to make a difference," she says. Even small acts of kindness can be powerful. "It can make someone's day and lead to a chain reaction," she adds. "You never know. Just be kind, in general."

She was six years old when I met her on the beach near where I live. I drive to this beach whenever the world begins to close in on me. Going on vacation every week might sound like the very unattainable dream.. All you need to do is get in the habit of treating your weekend like a vacation, suggests Cassie Mogilner Holmes, a professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management. We asked experts to share their favorite tips for adopting a vacation mindset at home.

Get creative about making time

. Some people have to bear weekend schedules packed with work. You could still make the best of a Thursday evening, Holmes suggests. Or, spare an hour on Sunday morning for chores, but protect the rest of the weekend as your vacation time.

Decision scientist Nika Kabiri recommends doing something totally new so you can disconnect from the same old routines governing your life. Among her favorite ideas: Drive to a part of town you've never been to before, go for a city walk, and grab lunch at the first cute café you see. Or take a bike or boat tour of your city..

Don't put extra pressure on yourself

Treating your weekend like a vacation doesn't mean it needs to be a delicate affair. If your "vacation" encounters a few unexpected affairs or lasts for only a few hours, don't be annoyed..Don't put pressure on yourself to have this "perfect vacation". It's meant to be fun. People don't usually become homeless suddenly. It's a chutes-and-ladders(阶梯状) process. A large new statewide study takes a closer look at the period just before homelessness, by asking a representative sample of almost 3,200 homeless people from all over the state about the dilemma they fell into, and what would have helped.

Some of the findings were unsurprising: in the state with the nation's largest homeless population, people are unhoused because they don't have enough money, or have experienced trauma (创伤). A quarter of all survey participants had experienced family violence, and their lives and health get much worse once homelessness strikes. But some of the report's data run counter to popular perception: for example, most homeless people are not from out of state, contrary to the commom belief that homeless people move to California for the weather and policies.

The study's lead author, Dr. Margot Kushel, says there's a "doom loop" of homelessness, where people have jobs that don't cover living expenses, so they lose their homes, and the resulting instability makes it harder to keep their jobs.

Kushel points to really exciting models of homelessness prevention, where in low-income communities, they'll have subway and bus posters saying, "Are you at risk of becoming homeless? Call us." These programs might offer anything from cash to finding landlords or roommates. "What was really striking to us was how little money people thought it would have taken," says Kushel. Most participants suggested that less than $500 a month, or a onetime payment of $ 10,000, would have kept them housed. Kushel cautions that the vast majority of mental health issues among the study participants are anxiety and depression. It's likely that the lack of resources results in those conditions, rather than the illness causing the homelessness. "The driving issue is clearly the deep poverty," Kushel says.

According to the traditional Chinese medicine, health is due to an internal balance of Yin and Yang. In the Yin-Yang theory, water is Yin-type while hot stuff is Yang-type, drinking hot water can enrich Yin and tonify(滋补)Yang in your body, keeping Yin and Yang in banlance. If you have cold symptoms(症状) or other Yin-type imbalances such as frequent chills, thirst, depression or sleepiness, hot water plays the role of the Yang and brings your body back into balance. Doctors of traditional Chinese medicine always tell patients to drink more hot water.

In January 2020, I left for a mission, along with a 75-person crew. I had got to know everyone quite well, which made me feel confident that everything would run smoothly. The main goal of the mission was to voyage through the water, identifying boats and aircraft with our sensors while remaining undetected. We were the eyes and ears of the French navy, 300 metres under the ocean.

The day finally came when we were set to come back. The radio channels on the submarine announced the news: "There is a deadly virus, and the country is locked down." Actually, the information didn't make any sense to me at that time. "Lockdown" was a new word to me. I didn't know what to expect.

When I got out of the submarine. I got my phone back and received weeks' worth of panicked messages. I took a train back to Paris, where my family lives, and was completely lost. People had masks and gloves on. I put over my mouth a fireproof mask that had been given to me by the navy. I just thought, everyone is hiding their mouths, so I'll do it, too, even though I didn't know why.
