My childhood is magical and full of adventure. I have so many childhood memories, and I would like to share one that still stimulates me. This unforgettable childhood event was about the first day when I learned how to swim. It happened so unexpectedly and quickly that not only I but my parents were surprised. Of course, we were proud as well. I was barely seven years old back then, and my parents thought that it was time for me to learn how to swim. One summer morning, they took me to a swimming pool in the City Swimming Complex which was just a 35-minute drive from our house. It was a weekend and both my parents accompanied me. After we reached the Swimming Complex, we found many people were learning how to swim. My mother said she would watch me learn this important skill with the help of my father. Then she cheered me on and took a seat.

I had no idea how to swim but I was excited to try this new adventure. However, when my father got into the swimming pool with me, I became a bit nervous. It seemed that things were not quite as easy for me.

Looking around, I noticed that many other children of all ages were also trying to grasp this skill and some of them had pretty much learned the art and science of this skill. Influenced by others, I was determined to focus on my training and swim as well as them. Under the guidance of my father, I learned with all my effort and devotion, and I made rapid progress. After teaching me for 30 minutes or so, my father went to buy some snacks for us and my mother came to talk to me for a while near the pool. She asked me if I had learned anything at all. To prove my progress, I jumped into the water and started swimming.

  • 9、It's well known that kids benefit from eating dinner with their families. In fact, children who spend this quality time with their parents do better in school and have larger vocabularies.  But what you may not know is that eating together as a family has benefits in other aspects too.

Healthy eating can be promoted. When families eat together, they usually have healthier home-cooked meals and consume more fruits and vegetables.  So they tend to give up destructive behavior and eat more mindfully when their children are watching.

It has been found that family meals may lead to social benefits for parents including those who have lower levels of the symptoms (症状) of depression and stress. Parents who eat with their children also say that they are more likely to be in a good mood.

When parents and kids eat together, they are developing links. In other words, they can build stronger connections. They will turn off the TV, put away their cell phones and just have face-to-face conversations. Keep the conversations positive and encourage kids to discuss their day.

Eating together helps pass on family tradition.  When teens grow up in homes that have regular family meals, they are far more likely to copy that practice in their homes. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology shows the more frequently a child eats family meals with his parents, the more be eats with his own children.

    A. Social skills can also be a key factor.

    B. Eating together profits parents' mental health.

    C. Plus, parents should keep listening more often.

    D. Parents want to be a model of good eating habits.

    E. Eating as a family hands down good parenting skills.

    F. The more the family communicate, the better their relationship.

    G. They also have lower rates of anxiety and manage emotions more sensibly.

  • 10、Top-down processing is the process of using context or general knowledge to understand what we perceive (感知). In 1970, psychologist Richard Gregory introduced the concept. He claimed that perception is constructive.

The processing plays an important role in our interactions with our environment. Our five senses are constantly taking in information. At any given time, we are experiencing different sights, sounds, tastes, smells, and ways things feel when we touch them. If we paid attention to each one of our senses all the time, we'd never do anything else. It enables us to simplify the process by relying on context and our pre-existing knowledge to understand what we notice. If our brains didn't employ top-down processing our senses would overwhelm us.

Top-down processing helps us understand what our senses are perceiving in our daily lives. For example, suppose you receive an important letter but a few drops of water have ruined part of the text. A few letters in different words are now just smudges (污迹). Yet, you're still able to read the letter in its entirety using top-down processing. You use the context of the words and sentences in which the smudges appear and your knowledge of reading to comprehend the meaning of the letter's message. See a word LO*E, with one letter knocked down, yet you are still able to quickly recognize the word as LOVE.

On the one hand, top-down processing serves a positive function by simplifying the way we comprehend our sensory perceptions. It enables us to shortcut the cognitive path between our perceptions and their meaning. On the other hand, patterns can also prevent us from perceiving things in unique ways. So we may understand the pattern of how to use a mobile phone, but if the manufacturer comes out with a new phone that employs completely unique interaction patterns, we may not be able to figure out how to use it. Besides, as our knowledge is limited and biased (片面的) in certain ways, it can lead to perceptual errors.

(2)、What maybe the key to understanding a text with missing letters?
A、Pre-existing knowledge. B、Active interactions. C、Five physical senses. D、Lessons from mistakes
(3)、What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A、Seeing is believing. B、Practice makes perfect. C、Every coin has two sides. D、Experience is the best teacher.
(4)、What does the author intend to do according to the text?
    A、Introduce a reading method. B、Deepen underlying meanings. C、Illustrate a cognitive strategy. D、Clarify a producing process.
  • 11、Plastic bottles and bags can be vaporized into chemical building blocks and turned into new plastics with all the properties of original materials. There are hurdles (障碍) still to overcome, but the new process is a big step toward a truly circular economy for plastic.

About 5 billion tonnes of plastic has gone to landfill since the 1950s, and recycling efforts have only tackled 9 percent of what we have produced. With current techniques, plastics degrade in each recycling round and end up in landfill after only a few cycles of the process.

John Hartwig at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues had previously developed a process that broke down waste plastic into its constituent parts, but it relied on the expensive metal catalysts (催化剂). Now, his team has discovered an improved process that works on both polyethylene, from which most plastic bags are made, and polypropylene, which is used to make harder objects. And it relies only on catalysts considered so common that they are essentially "dirt", says Hartwig.

In experiments, the team used two catalysts to turn a mixture of polyethylene and polypropylene into original chemicals for plastic with the efficiency of nearly 90 percent. However, Hartwig warns that there are still many hurdles to overcome, and that the process has only been tested in the presence of a small number of common additives (添加物). "There will be additives that will affect the catalysts," he says. This may mean having a way to separate those additives or finding catalysts that are resistant to them.

Cressida Bowyer at the University of Portsmouth, U.K., says that even if we have a process that can split waste plastic into constituent parts and withstand additives, other issues remain. The degree of poisonousness and disposal of the catalysts and additives must be considered, she says. "These could outweigh any perceived benefits of recycling technologies. Recycling should not be seen as any kind of solution to maintaining or increasing production of single-use and unnecessary plastics and continuing the current prevailing take-make-waste culture," she adds.

(1)、What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A、The harm plastic wastes do to humans. B、The alarming speed of making plastic wastes. C、The low efficiency of current plastic recycling. D、The pressing environmental pollution by plastic wastes.
(2)、Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word "dirt" in paragraph 3?
A、Materials quite essential. B、Materials easily accessible. C、Materials abundant in plastics. D、Materials basic to the products.
(3)、What does Hartwig think of the improved process?
A、It is not fully prepared for practical use. B、It reduces the need for single-use plastics. C、It needs further research to develop new materials. D、It can be applied to a limited number of common plastics.
(4)、What can be inferred from Cressida Bowyer's words?
A、Recycling doesn't produce any harmful substances and poisons. B、Health and environmental pollution should be the biggest concern. C、Recycling can be relied upon as a solution to widespread use of plastics. D、The improved process is as beneficial and sustainable as it is thought.

Mary was very happy when she got her dream part-time job at the local bookshop. It was right next to her school, so she could walk there after classes. Her boss, Mr. Thompson, was very nice and trusted her with lots of important tasks from the beginning.

One afternoon, Mr. Thompson gave Mary and her classmate Alex a special task. He wanted them to make a plan to promote a new book series all written by teenagers. "This series is unique because it reflects the voices of young authors," Mr. Thompson explained. "I'm counting on you two to come up with something that will truly connect with the young readers. You'll have to finalize your plan before Friday since the school Reading Festival is just around the corner."

Mary was very excited and happy to help. She nodded eagerly. "Absolutely, Mr. Thompson! I can't wait to get started." She was so thrilled that she couldn't stop smiling on her way home. Finally, there was a chance to show everyone what she could do.

But working with Alex wasn't going to be easy. Alex was known for being bossy and having strong opinions. When Mary met up with him at the library to discuss their project, she knew it would be tricky. "I've worked on similar projects before, and simple booths (展位) in the school courtyard always work, and we could hand out flyers," Alex said, without even looking at Mary.

Mary frowned (皱眉头) as she thought about Alex's idea. She knew that booths worked well, but she felt they could do something more exciting to catch the attention of their classmates. The new book series deserved a special promotion. "If we just follow the same old methods, how will this book series stand out?" Mary argued. "What if we have a book reading session with some authors? Or...?"

Alex, however, didn't seem interested in exploring new ideas. He rolled his eyes at Mary's suggestions for creativity, arguing that they didn't have the time or resources to try new things. He believed the usual methods would work best.

  • 19、I always admired my grandmother Jenny' s gardening skills. But it wasn't until a sunny afternoon in her backyard that I became interested in gardening myself. We were there to grow tomatoes. She handed me a tiny young tomato plant. It's a family tradition!

Over time, the tiny seedling (幼苗) had grown into a large tomato plant with many juicy red tomatoes. Harvesting those tomatoes with my grandma was a joy I won't forget. We spent hours in her kitchen making delicious homemade spaghetti sauce.

My time in the garden with my grandma showed me that gardening is more than just a hobby. It's a way to connect with our roots. The garden became something we both loved, bringing us closer together and creating a strong bond.

I watered the plants too much and forgot to take care of the soil. It was a learning experience. But I didn't give up. Instead, I saw these moments as opportunities to learn. I read books, went to workshops, and asked experienced gardeners in my community for advice.

Yet, Mother Nature can be unpredictable. from unbearable heat to unexpected frosts. I lost some of my favorite plants due to extreme weathers. I used drought-tolerant plants and protective coverings like shade cloths and frost blankets to help my strong plants grow.

Gardening is a lifelong journey of learning. It's like finding a hidden library, where each plant and plot offers something new to discover. The more time I spend in the garden, the more I realise that the soil is not just a place for plants to grow — it's also ideal ground for my personal growth.

    A. Gardening in cold weather will be rather tough.

    B. Just the smell alone brought back so many memories.

    C. However, my first attempts at gardening didn't go very well.

    D. Then she shared stories of her own grandmother doing the same.

    E. And grandma's gardening journey connects with me emotionally.

    F. It's always changing and requires us to stay open to new knowledge.

    G. But I started planting with the climate in mind instead of getting upset.

  • 20、As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there's been a push to make them genderless. "People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways," says Ashley Martin, a Stanford associate professor of organizational behavior. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. Yet as Martin has found in her work, gender is one of the fundamental ways people form connections with objects, particularly those designed with human characteristics.

In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as "Miuu." It was found that gender increased users' feelings of attachment to these devices and their interest in purchasing them. For example, participants said they would be less likely to buy a genderless voice assistant than versions with male or female voices.

While gendering a product may be good marketing, it may also strengthen outdated or harmful ideas about power and identity. The stereotypes commonly associated with men, such as competitiveness and dominance, are more valued than those associated with women. These qualities, in turn, are mapped onto products that have been assigned a gender.

Martin's study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object's name was meant to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a "he" or "she."

Martin sees a silver lining, however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) "provides an opportunity to change stereotypes." When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype-inconsistent roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do calculations, for instance.

(1)、What is the purpose of making new technologies genderless?
A、To reduce stereotypes. B、To meet public demand. C、To cut production costs. D、To encourage competition.
(2)、What were the participants probably asked to do in the study?
    A、Design a product. B、Respond to a survey. C、Work as assistants. D、Take a language test.
(3)、Why is it difficult to create genderless objects?
A、They cannot be mass-produced. B、Naming them is a challenging task. C、People assume they are unreliable. D、Gender is rooted in people's mind.
(4)、What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A、The quality of genderless products. B、The upside of gendering a product. C、The meaning of anthropomorphism. D、The stereotypes of men and women.
