1、My phone rang after I boarded a plane. It was my former PhD adviser calling to tell me that a preprint had just posted identified flaws (缺陷) in a paper we'd published in Nature. My stomach dropped as he told me the authors of the critique (评论) were demanding a retraction (撤回). The plane soon took off. I spent the 16-hour flight processing a mix of emotions —disbelief, embarrassment, frustration—and wondering what this would mean for my career.
After the plane landed, I took out my laptop and logged onto the airport WiFi so I could read the critique myself. It was harsh and thorough, pointing out several fundamental flaws in our methods and in the basic data which we'd gathered from other studies.
The fallout was swift and intense. I received a flood of emails and messages. Some were from supportive colleagues, but many were harshly critical of our work. I felt deeply embarrassed by the criticism.
We wrote a draft response, correcting the apparent errors in the data set and defending our methods. We decided against publishing our response, however, after receiving feedback from peer reviewers.
When it became clear that the retraction was unavoidable, I formally offered my resignation (辞职) to my department head. He didn't accept it, saying a resignation wasn't needed considering the errors in the paper were honest mistakes.
The experience helped me grow as a scientist. I learned that it is better to be open and accountable, even if it means admitting mistakes. I can't expect myself to know everything as a scientist and my work will be stronger if I seek out diverse expertise and opinions.
In the end, the reality is that retractions are a necessary part of the scientific process—and one that shouldn't be viewed only through a negative lens. Retractions can also be an opportunity to learn and improve. Honest mistakes happen, and researchers should be encouraged, not punished, for doing the right thing and retracting flawed work.
(1)、What news did the author get after boarding the plane?A、His research paper would be published soon. B、Some mistakes were found in his preprint. C、His paper was demanded to be retracted. D、His career might be influenced.(2)、What does the underlined word "fallout" mean?A、Answer. B、Result. C、Failure. D、Rejection.(3)、Why was the author's resignation refused?A、He had a reputation for honesty. B、He made mistakes unintentionally. C、He corrected his mistakes in the paper. D、He had made contributions to the department.(4)、What did the author learn from his experience?A、Retractions can be a chance to learn. B、Scientists ought to know everything. C、Honest mistakes are unavoidable in science. D、Admitting mistakes can be really embarrassing. -

3、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The MP3 has become a new fashion on campus. I had long dreamed of owning a MP3. The more MP3 owners were on campus, the stronger my desire (渴望) became. Finally, during one of my monthly visits home, I begged my parents to let me buy one, "Dad, Mom, I ... I want to buy a MP3 ... , the one for …"
I swallowed (吞咽) the rest of my words. Did I really need to explain what a MP3 was? Surely everybody knew!
At first there was no response from my parents. But my little brother replied eagerly, "Me too!"
Then finally my dad spoke, "What! What is it for? This little stuff breaks down soon after you get it! It's an absolutely useless expense (花费) …"
Then, I had an idea. When the summer vacation came, I lied to my parents that I couldn't stay at home, because the school had supplementary (附加的) programs. As a result, I earned my money for a new MP3 through my part-time job.
I was at home the night before my new school when Mom came into my room. She sat on my bed, and patted me on the shoulder. Then she handed me a small box. "Take this. Don't tell your father ... Now, study hard, okay?" she said softly.
"Mom, how did you ... ?" I asked.
"It's from my own savings. Your father doesn't know." I sat alone for a long time with my new MP3, weeping (哭泣) silently.
When I went back to school, I decided to give up my part-time job so that I could study harder for my parents, for my dream. My motivation (动机) to study has never been so strong.

8、Should teenagers be allowed to use social media freely? Many parents and teachers say no. They think that social media lets young people face online bullying (网络霸凌) — like classmates leaving mean (恶劣的) comments on their posts (推文) or spreading rumors (谣言) in group chats. It also brings fake news, such as untrue stories about "dangerous snacks," which can make teens scared or confused. Besides, bad comparisons (对比) are common: some teens see others post photos of "great trips" or "good grades" online and start thinking their own life isn't good enough. They also worry too much screen time hurts mental health — like feeling sad if no one likes their posts — and school work, since spending hours watching short videos makes it hard to focus on homework.
However, others think social media can be a good tool. It lets teens connect with friends easily: for example, they can video chat with a friend who moved away, or share funny jokes in a small group. It also helps them learn about the world — like watching short videos about animals, or reading posts from scientists talking about space. What's more, it lets them show their creativity (创造力):some teens draw on phone apps and share works, or write short stories about weekends and post them. Banning (禁止) it completely may only make them more curious — they might sneak (偷偷摸摸) to use it without parents knowing — or hide what they do online, which is riskier.
The key is balance (平衡). Parents should talk openly with kids about online safety — like telling them not to share home address or phone number with strangers — and set fair rules. For example, agree teens use social media 1 hour a day, and not during homework time or before bed. Schools can also teach skills to use the internet well: like showing how to check if a news story is real (by looking at trusted websites), or what to do if someone is rude online (block (屏蔽) them and tell a teacher).
(1)、What do parents and teachers worry about too much screen time from social media?A、It makes teens spend more time reading books. B、It hurts teens' mental health and school work. C、It stops teens from making new friends online. D、It makes teens forget how to use phone apps.(2)、How can social media help teens connect with friends according to people who support (支持) it?A、By letting them video chat with friends who moved away. B、By helping them finish homework with friends together. C、By asking friends to meet offline every weekend. D、By sharing their parents' contact information with friends.(3)、What is the main idea of the third paragraph?A、Why parents and teachers disagree with social media use. B、How to keep a balance when teens use social media. C、What good things social media can bring to teens. D、Why banning social media is bad for teens.(4)、What is the writer's purpose (意图) of writing this passage?A、To tell teens to stop using social media completely. B、To help parents and schools ban social media use. C、To guide people to think about teens' social media use wisely. D、To show that social media is only good for teens. -
9、When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents' furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly (整洁地) dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone's throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival, she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents' store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn't accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile, "If your parents don't want you to have this, just don't tell them. Let me tell them instead." We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

10、The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting all summer. I didn't want summer to end, but I was eager to go to high school for my first week.
When I got to school on the morning of the first day, I realized how large the school was and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. And then a kind senior showed up and guided me to my classroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend, Jimmy. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher.
After finishing four classes, I didn't feel too bad. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn't feel ready after all. My literature teacher is Mr. Smith. He told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this term. I love reading and writing, but come on, 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was anxious.
The courses in high school seem like they're going to get much harder, but they haven't yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds and the seniors, having a totally different experience that I had never had before was really exciting.

Sylvia came to her grandmother's farm a year ago. The air in the countryside felt free, soft and sweet. Every day she would spend some time in the woods nearby. Some birds even came close to her, singing around.
One day in the evening, a tall young man carrying a gun approached their farm house. He was lost and asked for a night's stay. Sylvia's grandma agreed.
The young man introduced himself as an ornithologist (鸟类学家), who collected bird specimens (标本). "I have over 100 kinds of specimens in my study." Sylvia felt her heart trembling as she imagined so many birds being shot.
"Sylvia knows a lot about birds, too." her grandmother said proudly. The young man became thrilled. "I have followed a rare white heron (鹭) in this direction for two days. Have you seen it?" he asked Sylvia. Sylvia's heart gave a wild beat. She had seen the strange bird on the other side of the woods. "I would give $100 to whoever showed me where the white heron is." But Sylvia was silent.
That night, the young man had fallen asleep, but Sylvia was broad awake. Her mind was alternatively visited by the bird specimens and the wished-for treasures 100 dollars could buy.
When dawn was breaking, Sylvia quietly left her house and finally reached an old pine tree. Sylvia climbed to the top. Below her, a white heron was smoothing its feathers at leisure and cried to its mate nearby. Sylvia couldn't help sighing at such harmony, knowing it was her calling to sustain…

15、I scan the water in Australia's Kakadu National Park, in search of an ancient1: a saltwater crocodile (鳄鱼). No ripples (涟漪), no sound. But I know it's there.2, just beneath the surface. It could even be3 me right now.
Crocodiles are among the world's most effective hunters. Their eyes and nostrils are positioned high on their heads, while their whole4 is just beneath the water surface. With explosive tail power and the ability to stay underwater for hours, their5 has remained unchanged for 95 million years.6: these animals are built for the kill.
As I continue to scan the water, I see7: a soft ripple. Then, just a few metres away, two eyes break the surface as a huge head rises ever so slightly out of the water. The silent beast8 me. I feel my heart racing. I take a few steps to the left; the crocodile silently follows. Then a few to the right; and again, it9 me. I'm a dot on its radar. A possibility. A chance. 16、Being one of the most varied foods, eggs are a great addition to any diet. Not only are they easier to add to just about any meal, but they are also incredibly nutritious and support overall health.
You may experience better brain function. Eggs provide choline (胆碱) — a key substance that enhances communication between brain cells, ensuring messages are delivered efficiently like a well-organized delivery system. Thus, eating eggs regularly can strengthen your memory. What's more, the nutrients in eggs act like brain fuel, keeping you focused during classes or while doing homework.
You may have healthier eyes. Eating eggs helps protect your eyes with natural substances that act as natural sunglasses, blocking harmful light like screen blue light. Egg yolks contain more eye guarding nutrients than carrots, reducing eye fatigue (疲劳) during study sessions.
You can have stronger muscles and bones. Eggs provide quality protein for muscle repair after exercise, while their vitamin D works with other nutrients like calcium and phosphorus to strengthen bones. Regular consumption supports muscle growth during daily activities and keeps bones strong.
It may seem like other foods are much better at making you feel full, but eggs are actually an excellent selection to help you keep it that way. They are the ideal mix of protein and fat and can be extremely satisfying and filling. By consuming more eggs, you are able to significantly decrease short term food and snacks.
A. Eggs are a good source when you're busy
B. You can have a full stomach for longer time.
C. You can get more protein after having an egg.
D. So regular egg consumption helps maintain clear vision.
E. This makes it easier to remember school lessons or daily tasks
F. When you eat eggs regularly, this is what happens to your body.
G. They can help to maintain bone structure and prevent weakness.

17、How far back does your family tree go? A hundred years? A thousand years? What about six to seven million years? An ancient skull (头骨) found in Africa suggests that the human family might be that old.
Discovered in 2001 in the desert of Chad, the skull was nicknamed Toumai by scientists. Toumai is a rare find. The skull is nearly complete. It even includes a few teeth. The Toumai skull is estimated to be between six and seven million years old. Scientists are debating whether the skull is linked to humans.
The finding is not without controversy. Some scientists think that Toumai is the oldest known hominid (原始人) ever found. Others say Toumai is an ape (猿).
Most hominids that scientists are aware of lived millions of years after Toumai. The most famous one is called Lucy. She lived in Ethiopia about 3.5 million years ago. While Lucy's face looked like the face of a chimpanzee, Toumai's skull has both human and ape-like features.
Because Toumai's skull looks different from other hominid skulls, some scientists think Toumai represents a whole new species. Toumai's official name is Sahelanthropus tchadensis.
Scientists were surprised to find a human-like face on a skull as old as Toumai's. They thought hominids turned into humans step by step over time. Scientists mark those changes on a timeline, starting with a chimpanzee-like ancestor and ending with modern humans. Toumai's human-like face and chimp-sized brain suggest that the development of hominids was not so simple. There may not be a direct line leading from Toumai to Lucy to us. Instead, the timeline might be similar to a tree with lots of branches. Different species in different places could have evolved human-like features at different times.
Scientists aren't sure where exactly Toumai belongs on a family tree. Toumai could be like a great-great-grandfather or just a distant cousin. Toumai could also be one of many types of hominids who wandered Earth millions of years ago.
(1)、What can we learn about Toumai skull?A、It is the oldest ape-like skull. B、It is about 3.5 million years old. C、It was named by a historian from Africa. D、It was hardly damaged before being discovered.(2)、What does the underlined word "controversy" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Argument. B、Surprise. C、Hardship. D、Unhappiness.(3)、What do the scientists conclude from Toumai's human-like face in paragraph 6?A、Hominids turned into humans in a simple way. B、Toumai may belong to the same species as Lucy. C、The development of hominids may not be a direct line. D、It confirmed the evolution from Toumai to Lucy to human.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A、Lucy: The Most Famous Ancient Hominid. B、The Human Family Tree: A Complete History. C、The Toumai Skull: Rethinking Human Evolution. D、Science Debate: Did Humans Come from Apes? -
18、In their spare time, most young people like to enjoy themselves and play on their smartphones. But Li Ruxue is different. He joined a sky-walker gibbon. (天行长臂猿) protection organization, where one of his major responsibilities was picking up gibbon feces (猿粪).
The skywalker gibbon is a top-level State protected animal whose population is smaller than that of wild giant pandas. Through analyzing their DNA from their feces, researchers can protect them better. So over the past four and a half years, Li has followed gibbons and collected their feces for researchers. Li said the job relies heavily on luck and willpower. "Our work and rest completely depend on gibbons. Though the lifestyle is a little bit tiring, it's meaningful." But he has never regretted his choice or felt alone, as he has found more young people engaged in nature conservation.
Like Li, Chu Wenwen, 27, has also worked to protect animals. Listed as a first-class State protected animal in China, the Mengxin beaver (蒙新河狸) is found only along the Ulungur River in Xinjiang's Altay county. To protect them, Chu launched the "beaver canteen" program in 2018, in which a huge "canteen" of about 400,000 salix shrubs (灌木柳苗) was built with the snack money by mostly young internet users. "I am lucky to live in such a great era when young people can realize their dreams while the country strongly supports nature conservation," said Chu.
According to Fan Pengfei, a professor at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, ecological protection as an industry can provide only a few jobs, most of which are in research institutes and nongovernmental organizations. But he has seen more and more young people take part time jobs as journalists, photographers and so on to raise awareness of wildlife protection. "Young people are the future of the world and the future of global biodiversity conservation," noted Xinhua.

20、Six Books about Appreciating Living creatures
Here are some recommendations for nonfiction about appreciating living creatures.
Where the Animals Go
This book of beautiful maps traces various movements of wild animals. It is recommended because the COVID-19 pandemic began with the trafficking (贩运) of wildlife for food and body parts. Blame for the human disease can't be laid on animals. It is the direct result of people's blindness to how the exploitation (剥削) and abuse of wildlife are linked to people's welfare.
The Book of Barely Imagined Beings
This book combines illustration and text to provide a deeply inspiring survey of real but astonishing creatures, starting at the axolotl and ending with the zebrafish.
A Different Nature
This book examines the history of zoos and calls urgently for us to reinvent them as places constructed for the good of animals rather than the convenience of people.
Giants of the Monsoon Forest
This book explores the lives of the extraordinary Asian elephants who spend their nights in the forests of Myanmar and India and by day work with their mahouts (驯象人), harvesting timber. These animals make up about a fifth of all Asian elephants left in the wild.
When Elephants Weep
This book offers an accessible, strong look at the interiority (内心) and individuality of nonhuman creatures, showing them to be capable of anger, sorrow, selflessness and gratitude.
The Hidden Life of Trees
This international bestseller is a good introduction to the proposition, not new to philosophers but increasingly receiving scientific attention, that trees and other plants possess both consciousness and intelligence.
