Dave McNee met Claudia Mandekic 14 years ago. When she told McNee how hard it could be to get students excited about math, her favourite discipline, he made a surprising suggestion: "Why not throw in something they enjoy, like sports?" The idea of mixing basketball and mathematics got its first shot in 2011, when the now colleagues — who had launched a tutoring non-profit — were invited to run a summer-school program for kids who'd failed Grade 9 math at Georges Secondary School.
When the students showed up for their first day, they weren't exactly excited. Over the next few hours, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques to improve their shooting while also helping them calculate their field-goal percentage — which, in turn, taught them about fractions and decimal (分数和小数) points. At the end of the game, the winning team was determined based on which group had the highest total percentage and had done the most efficient math. "When the bell rang, they were so fixated on collecting their data and figuring out which team won that they didn't leave," says Mandekic. "I realized we might be onto something."
The classes, later named BallMatics, soon spread to other schools. "I was terrible at math," says Douglas, who enrolled in a fast-track summer program. "But once I started BallMatics and realized the sport I loved was directly tied to math, it made me a lot better at it. Every time I played basketball, I was thinking about math."
Almost any math problem, McNee and Mandekic realized, can be taught on the court. Kids can learn how to navigate an X-Y grid to find their next shooting spot or absorb the basic principles of trigonometry based on the angle at which they release the ball. In 2019, McNec and Mandekic established a private high school called Uchenna Academy. At the school, kids with top basketball skills can study all subjects, train at their sport and work part-time helping out with the BallMatics afterschool programs.
Douglas, now 20 and earning a degree in education believes the school's commitment to academics is the key reason it's been a winner. "If we didn't do our work, we weren't playing at the game," he says, adding that coaches would bench kids who didn't keep up in class. "At Uchenna, we were student athletes, not athlete students."

Calvin's day camp teacher, Autumn, passed out a sheet of paper with pictures and descriptions of different birds and a small pair of binoculars) (双筒望远镜) to each camper. He announced, "We're going to do a one-week challenge called ‘Big Week', where you try to identify birds and mark them on the paper. Whoever identifies the most birds wins."
Another challenge? Ever since camp started, Gladys had beaten Calvin at everything. If he won this one, maybe he'd finally show Gladys that she wasn't unbeatable. "How will you know if I really saw…" Calvin scanned the list. "… a glossy ibis?" "I won't," Autumn said. "A Big Week is based on honesty."
The next day at the preserve, when they hid behind some brush, Gladys spotted a great egret! "That was my gift to you," Gladys whisper-shouted with an I'm-going-to-win-this tone. "Like I would've missed that giant bird," Calvin protested. Suddenly, birds exploded above Calvin's head. Thunk! He fell down onto his back. Gladys rushed toward him, helped him up and advised, "Here's a tip: try being OUIET."
That evening, a large bird landed on Calvin's neighbor's tree. Calvin focused the binoculars. The bird had a bright red eye, a thick straight bill, a white throat and breast, and—oh, wow—long, thin, white feathers on the back of its head. "A black-crowned night heron!" he whispered excitedly. He was completely absorbed in his observation.
As the week went by, competition became fierce. Calvin had to win this contest. But chance seemed so slim! Then he remembered that he had found a feather that Autumn thought belonged to a Cooper's hawk close enough. He marked it, plus a few extra birds. What was the difference? He had seen them in the past, or he would see them eventually. He swallowed (吞咽) hard. No one will know the truth.
On the last day of Big Week, Autumn waved Gladys's checklist in the air. "Twenty-six is the number to beat. Anybody else?"

7、 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
As a child, I dreamed of becoming a writer, but the pursuit of dreams was never encouraged — leaving me to write secretly in my room. Life progressed and an interest in interior design surfaced in my teens. However, at my parents' insistence, I enrolled in secretarial school and worked in that area for twenty years.
So I signed up for a two-year interior-decorating course. I crammed two years of work into nine months to ensure that I received my diploma for my fortieth birthday.
The next step was to get some hands-on experience at a design firm. A visit to a newly opened interiors showroom ushered me into a dream job that opened more opportunities for me than I could have ever imagined. I worked as a decorating consultant at the showroom and I was on my way to creating the career I envisioned.
Opportunity knocked at my door in 1997. I peeked the possibility of writing a decorating column for a woman's magazine. The editor liked the idea and the monthly column debuted in February 1998. To master the finer skills, I signed up fora freelance (自由撰稿) writing course. Encouraging feedback from tutors gave me the confidence to submit my work for publication on the Internet. From around the world, people emailed to say that they identified with my experience to redefine myself and pursue my dream. Some even asked for advice. Soon, this hobby developed into a passion that consumed me. I now write two regular columns and my website is under construction.
I am doing what I love. On my journey, I have learned that it is never too late to pursue and live your dream.
A. I met my self-set deadline with twelve days to spare.
B. The response from readers was unexpected and overpowering.
C. My family tells me that I look younger and seem more energetic.
D. At 39, I felt a growing restlessness and a desire for a more creative life.
E. I realized that I was involved in doing something I dreamed of as a child.
F. Happy marriage with two kids and a job reawakened my teenage interest.
G. I promised to myself I would let nothing prevent me from being a freelance writer.

A team of scientists say that seawater flowing underneath and into gaps in the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica is contributing to the melting of the massive ice formation.
"The worry is that we are underestimating the speed that the glacier is changing. It would be disastrous for coastal communities around the world," Christine Dow, co-author of the study, said in a press release.
At roughly 80 miles across, Thwaites is the widest glacier in the world, nicknamed the "Doomsday Glacier" for the fatal effects its melting could have on global sea-level rise. Each year, it loses about 50 billion tons of ice, which comprises roughly 4% of all sea-level rise worldwide, according to the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration. One estimate predicted that the total loss of Thwaites could cause average global sea levels to surge by more than two feet.
In the study, the team of glaciologists used radar data by Finland's ICEYE commercial satellite program to get a better idea of what's happening below the surface of the glacier. They found that seawater flows in and away from, the glacier with the tides, mixing with freshwater, but some of that warm ocean water also travels deep beneath the ice formation, going "through natural passages" or collecting "in holes" and becoming trapped.
"There are places where the water is almost at the pressure of the overlying ice, so just a little more pressure is needed to push up the ice," said Eric Rignot, the study's lead author. "The water is then squeezed enough to jack up a column of more than half a mile of ice."
Dow suggested that additional ice sheet modeling could help scientists better understand what's happening under these major glaciers and develop a more precise timeline of expected sea-level rise across the world. "This work will help people adapt to changing ocean levels, along with focusing on reducing carbon emissions to prevent the worst-case assumption," Dow said.
(1)、Why is Thwaites called "Doomsday Glacier"?A、It is the largest glacier in the world. B、It comprises most of global sea-level rise. C、It is melting at an increasing high speed. D、It will cause huge disasters if entirely melting.(2)、What effect does the trapped seawater have on the glacier?A、It goes through the glacier, speeding melting. B、It mixes with freshwater, moving the glacier around. C、It increases pressure, lifting the glacier. D、It creates a barrier, preventing further melting.(3)、Why is additional ice sheet modeling suggested?A、To stop the melting process. B、To accurately predict sea-level rise. C、To help people change sea levels. D、To persuade people out of carbon emission.(4)、What is a suitable title for the text?A、The Worrisome Fate of Thwaites Glacier. B、Seawater's Role in Antarctic Melting. C、The Global Impact of Thwaites Glacier Melting. D、Ice Sheet Modeling for Sea-Level Rise Prediction. -

If you take a minute to think about the things that catch your attention, they're usually outsized (the Pyramids of Giza), extraordinarily delicate (a well-composed song), boldly colored (peacock feathers), or shocking (a bolt of lightning or a twist ending). These attention-grabbing things make us curious: Why is it like this? Where did the idea come from, or what made this happen?
From these questions come boundless story possibilities. From those ideas, though, we have to eventually cut them down to the ones worth telling, the ones that will grab and keep our readers' attention. This issue looks at that challenge from a variety of angles. Jane K. Cleland tackles the idea of thematic writing — writing that encourages readers to think about big issues that may or may not affect their lives, but at the very least will make them think What if… Then Jessica Strawser shares nine ways to write more authentic (真实的) child characters in adult fiction to bring a fresh perspective and engage readers. Tiffany Yates Martin takes on the debate of the controversial prologue (序言) — should you or shouldn't you use one? You'll have to read on to find out. When it comes to short fiction, Ran Walker offers tips for making the most of titles and first lines when every word counts. Finally, Amy Cook looks at the topic from a different angle — when your published book has stopped selling but you know it has more life in it, how can you use rights reversion to help it reach a new audience?
Our WD Interview for this issue features one author, Michael Cunningham. I was lucky enough to talk with him about his newest novel, Day, which features everything I love about a Cunningham novel: family drama, global issues made local, and impossibly affecting, heartbreaking prose. His writing advice was some of the most unexpected I've heard.
Maybe you're thinking about what you want to focus your attention on this year. Whatever your goal may be, we are glad to be with you along the way.

Road trips were part of my childhood, but it is hard to say they are entirely fond memories. As someone who easily got carsick, I spent most of the long drives with my head against the window or leaning awkwardly to the side. More often, however, I would have to sleep through the CDs in our beaten car.
There was one CD that we often played, one that became the symbolic Road Trip CD in my mind. It was an album in Mandarin (普通话) by my mom's favorite music artist, Leon Lai, who I understood was a major Cantopop legend in his day. We seemingly only played the unidentified Leon Lai CD during our hour-long road trips. I didn't know what it was called until I was in high school and successfully uncovered it by searching through Leon Lai's albums on Spotify until I found the one like the CD cover art.
向往,or Longing, a 1998 Mandarin release, didn't seem to be one of Leon Lai's most famous works. My mom didn't seem to remember why she had it either. The fact that it was in Mandarin, however, made my parents even more willing to play it on repeat. To make up for me and my brother's embarrassing unfamiliarity with the Chinese language, throughout our childhood they were keen on having us watch shows and listen to music in Chinese as a way for us to immerse ourselves and make up for the ground we lost. They were usually in Mandarin, because that was what our formal Chinese schooling taught us, even though Cantonese was the dialect our family actually spoke. This at least meant I could use what I learned in class to understand the lyrics in this album, though I found the singing harder to understand.
Due to the endless exposure to the songs on the road the genuinely memorable mix of upbeat and ballad-like tunes, as well as how well it shows my complicated connection to the Chinese language, this random album holds a special place in my heart.
(1)、How did the author feel during road trips?A、Bored. B、Anxious. C、Uncomfortable. D、Embarrassed.(2)、How did the author find the album's name?A、By asking his mother. B、By finding the CD case. C、By searching his high school. D、By matching the CD cover online.(3)、What does the underlined word "This" mean in paragraph 3?A、Chinese schooling. B、Family language. C、Music in Cantonese. D、Frequent exposure to Mandarin.(4)、What does the album Longing mean to the author?A、A favorite type of music. B、A cherished family tradition. C、A struggle with language identity. D、A connection between generations. -

The class was over. Karl was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karl picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank(空白的). He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karl's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! Karl looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most likely be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. "Finders are keepers, right?", he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

Signs of Healthy Friendships
Once in a while it's helpful to see if your friendship is as healthy as it can be. You might get used to a friendship over time to the point where you don't see the room for improvement. And since great friendships are priceless, you should always surround yourself with the kind of people who will lift your spirits, make you laugh, and remind (提醒) you that you are loved. Here are characteristics (特征) that strong friendships share.
Friends make you feel comfortable with yourself, so you don't need to act like someone you're not. Your friends know your shortcomings and love you anyway. You are perhaps the "best version" of yourself when you're with your friends.
A healthy friendship includes plenty of gentle honesty. True friends won't pretend just to avoid an argument (争论). As a result, you'll know where you stand with your friends and won't be afraid to share your true opinions.
They argue in a healthy way.
One of the biggest misunderstandings about good friends is that they never fight. But let's face it everyone fights. In fact, voicing your opinions freely will cause you to disagree from time to time and that's okay.
Healthy friendships mean you can be friends with someone else, too.
That's why great friends will improve your relationship yet still encourage you to meet people and try new things without them. A healthy friendship means that sometimes the two of you spend time apart, and that's okay.
A. Arguing isn't unhealthy.
B. Is your friendship as healthy as it can be?
C. Good friends dine out together from time to time.
D. Good friends are real and honest with each other.

Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have enabled authentic-sounding speech synthesis (语音合成) to the point that a person can no longer distinguish whether they are talking to another human or a deepfake (深度伪造). If a person's own voice is "cloned" by a third party without their agreement, bad guys can use it to send any message they want.
Computer scientist and engineer Ning Zhang has developed a new method to prevent unauthorized speech synthesis before it takes place: a tool called AntiFake.
Traditional deepfake detection methods only work after the damage is done. However, AntiFake prevents voice data from being synthesized into an audio deepfake beforehand. This tool turns the tables on cybercriminals (网络罪犯) by using similar voice cloning techniques they employ, but for voice protection. The software complicates voice data extraction and feature identification crucial for voice synthesis. "We're using an opposite AI technique originally used by cybercriminals, but now we're using it against them," Zhang explained. "We slightly change the recorded audio, just enough to make it unusable for voice clone training while still sounding natural to humans."
Ben Zhao, a professor of computer science at University of Chicago, says that the software, like all digital security systems, will never provide complete protection. But, he adds that it can raise the bar and limit the attack to a smaller group of individuals with significant resources.
AntiFake can already protect shorter voice recordings against cloning. The creators of the tool believe that it could be extended to protect larger audio documents or music from misuse. But the methods and tools that are developed must be continuously adapted because cybercriminals will learn and grow with them.

The language Centers first Trivia Night tested students' knowledge on different languages and their histories last Friday at Douglass commons.
"We have decided to conduct this event when the weather is bad so that students who have nowhere to go and stay on campus can come and find a comfortable shelter during a cold winter day," Language Center Director, Teresa Valdez said. According to Valdez, the idea for Trivia night came a year ago from a junior and team-member called Elizabeth de Los Reyes. The event engaged students' interest in languages and showed the high-quality services that the Language Center provides.
Participants competed in small groups that each represented a different language and country. There were five teams in total: Russia, China, Japan, Spain and France. The competition consisted of four rounds with each round consisting of three questions relating to the following topics literature, language, geography, culture and history.
After a few warm-up questions about how people greet each other in different languages, what continent Turkey is found in, and who is the first man to fly to the moon, the questions became increasingly difficult. Each round offered an increasing amount of points a team could receive. The final question was worth 20 points. If a team did not answer it correctly, the points were taken from the total.
In the meantime, students enjoyed pizza, snacks, and drinks while sharing their linguistic (语言的) interest. Most of the participants knew two or three languages. Others knew more, such as first-year Bartek Jezierski from Poland, who can speak English, Polish, German, Spanish, and Russian.
The winners from first to third place were France, Japan and Russia respectively. All five teams were given some prizes—a blue shopping bag, a cup and stuffed toys. However, students believed the most important prize of the evening was the process of the competition—how students from diverse backgrounds and cultures were able to participate in a friendly competition, and shared their mutual (相互的) love of languages.
(1)、What is one of the purposes of Trivia Night?A、To attract students to learn languages. B、To help the students suffering from coldness. C、To collect opinions from the students on its services. D、To select the best students for the Language center.(2)、How many questions were there in the competition in total?A、3 B、4. C、12. D、20.(3)、Which of the following can best describe the atmosphere of the competition?A、Quiet. B、Relaxing. C、romantic. D、Depressing.(4)、 What did students value most in the competition?A、Some snacks and drinks. B、Various prizes for winners. C、The course of the competition. D、The services provided by the language center. -

Zach Conti, who is a student in Eastern Michigan University and joined the football team as a walk-on (临时队员) in 2020, has worked at several part-time jobs to pay for his education. Now he won't have to anymore.
"Football is something I really love, so ever since I got to school, I've had to do whatever it takes to stay here and stay in a good position with my studies and football," Conti said. "I have to do many jobs, but when you really want something, you won't feel bored."
While Conti's teammates would see him going to or coming back to work, they were very supportive. But Conti still had trouble paying for his education and his mother's medical bills. He was planning on leaving the university.
Brian Dooley, who would get a scholarship, couldn't see that happen and decided to help his teammate. He told head coach Chris Creighton about the thing. Creighton went to see if an additional scholarship could be given out. The school allowed the team to give out five scholarships and another one was not allowed. Then Dooley went to the coach with a special request.
"Brian Dooley comes into my office," Creighton said during a team meeting on August 3. "And he says, ‘Coach, Conti should get a scholarship. And I've talked this over with my family. And if there's a way to make this happen, I am willing to give up my scholarship as a gift to Conti.'" That's when Dooley walked over to Conti and handed him an envelope with the scholarship inside.
Dooley explained the reason for helping his teammate "I did it because I've seen Conti grow over the long time. It would be a great pity if he walked away from something that he loves. He works so hard. In my eyes, he should get it 100 percent."
(1)、How was Conti's life in the university?A、Boring. B、Carefree. C、Challenging. D、Valueless.(2)、What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 4 refer to?A、A poor mother's falling sick. B、Conti's doing part-time jobs. C、The team's laughing at Conti. D、Conti's dropping out of school.(3)、How did Dooley help Conti?A、He advised his school to collect money for Conti. B、He requested his coach to give his scholarship to Conti. C、He managed to apply for another scholarship for Conti. D、He asked his family to pay for Conti's school education.(4)、What do Dooley's words in the last paragraph show?A、Conti needs to work harder. B、He enjoys working with Conti. C、He plays football better than Conti. D、Conti is worthy of the scholarship. -

Donna Strickland was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics jointly with Arthur Ashkin and Gérard Mourou. It's the first time in 55 years that a woman has won this famous prize, but why has it taken so long? We look at five other pioneering female physicists — past and present — who actually deserve the prize.
Jocelyn Bell Burnell
Perhaps the most famous snub (冷落): the student Bell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967, when she was a PhD student at Cambridge. The Nobel Prize that recognised this landmark discovery in 1974, however, went to her male supervisor, Antony Hewish.Recently awarded a £2.3 million Breakthrough Prize, which she gave away to help under-represented students, she joked to The Guardian, "I feel I've done very well out of not getting a Nobel Prize."
Lene Hau
Hau is best-known for leading the research team at Harvard University in 1999 that managed to slow a beam of light, before managing to stop it completely in 2001.Often topping Nobel Prize prediction lists, could 2019 be Hau's year.
Vera Rubin
Rubin discovered dark matter in the 1980s, opening up a new field of astronomy. She died in 2016, without recognition from the committee.
Chien-Shiung Wu
Wu's "Wu experiment" helped disprove the "law of conservation of parity".Her experimental work was helpful but never honoured, and instead, her male colleagues won the 1957 Nobel Prize for their theoretical work behind the study.
Lise Meitner
Meitner led groundbreaking work on the discovery of nuclear fission. However, the discovery was acknowledged by the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which was won by her male co-lead, Otto Hahn.
