Everyone knew that Kevin had a fantastic singing voice. Normally, Alexander just ignored him, but he couldn' t help imagining himself as a member of the choir. Wouldn' t it be fun, he thought, to sing with other kids every day and have someone actually teach him about singing?

On the tryout day, Alexander took a deep breath, walked into the building, registered at a large table, and then waited nervously in the hallway. The only one who didn' t look nervous was Kevin. And why should he be? He has performed as a soloist many times. Alexander, on the other hand, had never taken a musical lesson in his life, much less had performed for an audience. 

After a while, the choir director, Mr Robeson, walked in and told the kids that they were to sing a song individually, sing as a group and answer some questions. Soon the individual test began. When Alexander stood on the stage, he tried to calm down and pretended he was singing in the shower. He felt satisfied when he was done, at least until Kevin' s turn came. As Kevin' s confident voice filled the room, Alexander realized that he would never sound that good. 

Next, Mr Robeson put the kids into groups of four or five and asked them to sing together. Kevin' s group sang right before Alexander' s, and even with four other boys singing, Kevin' s voice was clear and distinct; it seemed to reach the farthest corners of the room.

I could feel the excitement rising in me as I held the beautifully wrapped present in my hands. I was unable to contain my curiosity any longer. I opened it. It was a brand new laptop(笔记本电脑)．I had scored straight As for my O-level examination and this was my reward. I had always envied my friends who were exchanging news about chat rooms, instant messaging and e-mailing, all of which I knew nothing about. Now I was going to find out. 

It started out simply enough. I was searching for some information online when I came across a social networking site. Soon I became addicted to chatting with my new-found friend on the Internet. I began to spend more and more time on YouTube and became enslaved by Facebook and Twitter. I had never imagined that the day would come when I would be stuck by the glowing screen before me. Whenever I didn' t surf these social networking sites, I would be going through conversation about boring things or fashion websites. 

As time passed, I realized that I was addicted to the Internet. During weekends, when I had more time on my hands, I could easily spend a few hours on my laptop. It came to a point where I chose to lock myself in my room, refusing to come out and take part in family discussions. I preferred to stay connected to the people I befriended on the Internet although I had never met them. Soon I was spending the early hours of the morning surfing the Internet. Sleep was replaced by naps(打盹) and my grades at school also dropped quickly. 

It was about this time that my parents started voicing their disapproval. It became obvious to them that I was spending too much time on the Internet. I was asked to decrease my usage of the laptop. Yet, however hard I tried, I was unable to pull myself away, unable to end my chat sessions, and unable to concentrate on my lessons. I was desperate for just another click, just another look at my e-mail or message board.

My family moved in a small house in Brighton, Colorado on my seventh birthday. My first memory is our neighbor Bill, an old man, handing me strawberries from his garden through a hole in the chain-link fence. " We need to make the hole bigger, " he said jokingly. Later I knew that he lived alone. 

Bill spent much time working in the garden, and I was always talking to him from our yard. I was a chatterbox. I think what drew me to Bill is that he never got tired of listening to me. I also think Bill saw a lot of himself in me—we were both lonely and anxious—and that may be why he always took the time to listen to me. It was a wonderful connection. 

There weren't any kids of my age in the neighborhood, and my parents were very busy, so I mostly played in the yard with my dog. I had a lot of imaginary friends—a whole family, actually, with a wife, children, a best friend. . . no joke. Weird kid.

One day, my parents asked Bill whether he'd watch me while they were away on business. This worked for everyone, so it became a somewhat monthly occurrence. Bill had a spare room in his house, which became " my" room.

Bill promised to teach me to drive the lawn tractor someday and I was always looking forward to it. In winter, Bill would attach a snowplow to the front of the lawn tractor. I seriously told him that I would invent a better snowplow when I grew up. " Sure you will. You'll get a patent certificate. It takes a certificate to prove an important thing, " Bill said with a smile.

One snowy morning, an idea suddenly hit me. My parents were watching TV when I spat it out, " What if I adopted Bill as my grandpa? " My parents said I could go over and ask him.

A Girl with Stage Fright

It was obviously going to be one of those days. Students were preparing for a singing contest actively. Paul, a music teacher, made comments on the students' performance at the end of a rehearsal(彩排)．A girl named Lisa did the poorest preparation. Paul was very annoyed and entirely frustrated with her. He doesn' t recall how he closed the rehearsal, but he' s sure the words he chose were not words that would lift the girl' s spirits but rather satisfy his selfish need to punish her for the poor performance. 

The moment Paul dismissed the students, Lisa, the very reserved freshman girl, made a path straight toward him. She looked him right in the eye and said, " I hate you!" Paul was taken aback and frightened by the passion and honesty in her voice. Though entirely shocked, he was somehow able to collect himself and stay calm. He looked her right in the eye and said, " Well, that' s a shame, but it' s my duty to remind you and inspire you. " She didn' t react, but rather stormed away, her anger unchanged. 

Several days later, they had the occasion to speak in private. Lisa asked if Paul remembered the time when she told him that she hated him. How could he forget? She went on to admit quite openly and honestly that it was herself, not him, who she hated. The moment got heavy and she began to tell him of her fear and pressure when standing on the stage. She believed that no matter how well she prepared, she would perform terribly on the stage. Paul became aware that she had serious stage fright and also realized that maybe he had done something improper several days ago. Then he talked to her patiently and sincerely, hoping to help her build the confidence.

But all of us missed dad very much. He was a model father and husband. Life was cruelly taken away from him at a very young age of 42. 

However, my mother managed to pull through and found a job at the clinic. It was very tough on someone like her who had never worked before in her life. But money was scarce and there were five mouths to feed. Dad did not leave much behind. He never suspected he would die so young. We stopped dining out and had our meals mostly at home. We basically lived from hand to mouth. That' s when it dawned on me that I had to do my part for the family. I knew mother would not agree but I threw caution out of the window and managed to get a part-time job at a fast-food restaurant. I worked three hours a day and managed to bring home money so that my siblings and I could go out for occasional movies or meals. I was sure that mother suspected something. But she could not quite point the finger to the source of her suspicion.

For a decade，Xie Jincheng has been buried in his duties at the National Library of China (NLC) in Beijing.When asked how old he was，the 37­year­old had to pause for a few seconds to 1 .

Each working day，he sits at a desk and focuses on handling ragged yet 2  pieces of paper in front of him.As one of 17 restorers of 3  books at the NLC，he shakes off centuries of old dust to 4  the works he deals with.

This sneaker brand out of Dubai wants to fight the growing problem of plastic pollution.Led by 23yearold Indian businessman Ashay Bhave，they may have found a winning approach: making shoes out of plastic grocery bags."Thaely"means "plastic bag"in the Hindi language.

"I was looking to create footwear that is costeffective and safe for the environment，"Bhave said in an interview with a newspaper."I needed to come up with something that uses recycled plastic without creating any more plastic waste."Plastic bags were the perfect solution.He said five trillion plastic bags are used around the world each year."I was motivated to find a solution to this problem，"Bhave said.

That solution was the fiber called ThaelyTex.Made entirely from plastic bags，the material looks and feels like leather.That sounds promising.Better yet，the production process requires no additional chemicals and produces no poisonous by­products.The result is a smart­looking pair of white low­top sneakers.

Bhave wouldn't expose the full process for making ThaelyTex，but he said that each pair of shoes was made from up to 15 plastic bags and 22 plastic bottles.Where do they get the materials? Bhave told Elle that was the hardest part."The biggest challenge we faced was right at the first step of acquiring the plastic bags."

Finally，they got help from TrioTap Technologies，a waste management plant.Bhave said they offered to collect the bags and also process them into ThaelyTex.

So far，it seems like things are falling into place.There are already hundreds of preorders in place.It sounds like they have some plans for the future."We have a few more colors coming up，"said Bhave.They also plan to put out a hightop model and bring in a line of clothing.Let's hope their growth is also friendly to the environment.

Kenny Eating House is always crowded in the late afternoons right up to midnight. You will see many people standing around the tables.  Once there is the slightest indication that the customers are leaving their table, you will see a few people diving for it. The victor will stand at the table proudly waving his relatives or friends over, while the losers will be down in the mouth. 

 You next have to get the attention of the busy waiters rushing about to attend to the customers. You will usually hear the words " hot water" being shouted out as they pass, even if they are not holding any such thing!  In between trying to catch the attention of the waiters and looking through the menu, you will hear customers complaining about the slow service. 

Once the waiter comes to take your orders, he is impatient. Sometimes, these waiters would just walk away from indecisive customers and the latter would have to work hard at getting some attention again. Usually, the waiters shout the orders out to the cooks located deep in the kitchen.  

Whenever the crowd gets too thick, the waiters will ask customers to share their tables with those standing. When the tables are shared by two different groups of people, the loudness becomes incredibly deafening. With plates clanking and people talking loudly, you need to shout to be heard.  The hardworking waiters can finally sit down for a chat or have a rest. The activity at the eating place winds down, ready to recover before the next day of madness arrives.

Scientists in Australia are testing printed solar panels to power a Tesla on a 15,100­kilometer journey beginning in September, which they hope will get the public thinking about steps to help prevent climate change. 

The Charge Around Australia (CAA) project will power a Tesla electric car with 18 of the team's printed plastic solar panels, each 18 meters long, rolling them out beside the vehicle to absorb sunlight when it needs a charge.

Paul Dastoor, the inventor of the printed solar panels, said the University of Newcastle team would be testing not only the endurance of the panels but their potential performance for other applications. " This is actually an ideal test bed to give us information about how we would go about using and powering technology in other remote locations, for example, in space, " Dastoor told Reuters in the town of Gosforth, north of Sydney. 

The printed solar panel is a lightweight, laminated(层压的) plastic that can be made at a cost of less than $10 a square meter. The panels are made on a commercial printer originally used for printing wine labels. 

Dastoor said using the panels to power a car would get Australians to think more about electric vehicles and could help ease their " range anxiety" . The community is seeking these sorts of answers to the problems it's being faced with, day in, day out, around climate change.

On their 84­day Tesla journey, the team plans to visit about 70 schools to give students a taste of what the future may hold. Asked what Elon Musk, CEO and founder of Tesla Inc TSLA. O, might say about the CAA project, Dastoor said he hoped he would be pleased. CAA was " showing how our innovative technology is now combining with his developments to develop new solutions for the planet" , Dastoor said. 

As people across the globe struggled with higher levels of stress, depression and anxiety this past year, many turned to their favorite comfort foods: ice cream, pizza, hamburgers. But studies in recent years suggest that the high­sugar and high­fat foods eaten when we are stressed or depressed, as comforting as they may seem, are the least likely to benefit our mental health. Instead, whole foods such as vegetables, fruit, fish, eggs, nuts may be a better bet. 

Historically, nutrition research has focused largely on how the foods we eat affect our physical health, rather than our mental health, though. Over the years, large population studies have found that people assigned to follow a Mediterranean diet for three months had greater reductions in symptoms of depression after three months compared to a control group. 

Public health experts around the world have started encouraging people to adopt lifestyle behaviors like exercise, sound sleep, a heart­healthy diet and avoiding smoking that may reduce inflammation(发炎) and have benefits for the brain. Individual clinicians are already including nutrition into their work with patients. Dr. Drew Ramsey, a clinical professor at the Columbia University, begins his meetings with new patients by exploring their diets. He asks what they eat, learns their favorite foods, and finds out if foods that he considers important for the connection are missing from their diets, such as plants, seafood. 

Dr. Ramsey said he does not want people to think that the only factor involved in brain health is food. " Lots of people get their food exactly right, live very active lives, and still have significant troubles with their mental health, " he said. But he also teaches people that food can be empowering. " We can't control our genes, " he said. " But we can control how we eat, and that gives people actionable things that they can do to take care of their brain health on a daily basis. "

Just as a philosopher says, I think, therefore I am. However, when it comes to effective teaching and learning informed by cognitive science—the science of the mind—it' s perhaps more appropriate to say： So, what does effortful thinking look like?  Here, we explore two modes of effortful thinking, or digging deep. 

 If you were building a well, would you spend five minutes digging a shallow hole and then call it a day, or would you spend time and effort digging continuously until you struck water?  I think we can all agree that digging deeper for longer would be best.  The longer and more effortfully we think about something, the more durable its " memory trace" will be and the more accessible that information will become. 

If you want learning to be connected, try digging like an archaeologist. Imagine you are on an archaeological dig, carefully unearthing the remains of an ancient city. For instance, rather than simply labeling an item " spoon" , you would instead tag it as " an iron spoon, probably made for a child" . You know that organizing items in this way is crucial if you want other archaeologists and researchers to identify and make sense of the antique by its parts (child, iron) and connect it to their own work. 

So, in order to promote your deep, effortful thinking, you' d better use " how/why" questions that invite connections between things and push for the principle behind an idea. Besides, consider " what if. . . " questions that break the surface features of an idea and invite a consideration of its underlying characteristics.  Lengthen the duration of effortful thinking by keeping yourself at the site of thought for longer.

C. If you want learning to be durable, try digging a well. 

D. Add more tags for others to understand and access later. 

E. It' s also of great importance not to move on too quickly.
