I fell in love with Yosemite National Park the first time I saw it, when I was 13. My parents took us there for camping. On the way out, I asked them to wait while I ran up to E1 Capitan, a huge rock of 3,300 feet straight up. I touched that giant rock and knew 1 I wanted to climb it. That has been my life's passion ever since — 2 the rocks and mountains of Yosemite. I've long made Yosemite my 3 .
About 15 years ago I started seeing a lot of 4 , like toilet paper, beer cans, and empty boxes, around the area. It's 5 me why visitors started respecting the place 6 and treated such a beautiful home-like place this way.
I tried 7 trash (垃圾) myself, but the job was too big. I would spend an hour or two on the job, only to find the area trashed all over again weeks later. Finally, I got so 8 it that I decided something had to change.
As a rock-climbing guide, I knew 9 about organizing any big event. But in 2004, together with some climbers, I set a date for a cleanup. On that day, more than 300 people showed up. Over three days we collected about 6,000 pounds of trash. It was amazing how much we were able to 10 . I couldn't believe the 11 we made — the park looked clean!
Each year volunteers come for the cleanup from everywhere. In 2007 alone, 2,945 people picked up 42,330 pounds of trash and 12 132 miles of roadway.
I often hear people 13 about their surroundings. If you are one of them, I would say the only way to change things is by doing rather than complaining. We need to teach by 14 . You can't blame others 15 you start with yourself.

Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage (遗产) is passed down through the generations. Yet, we fight a never-ending and very expensive war to preserve it for the future. And today, it is under attack as never before. Technology is often seen as something that destroys the past. .
Creating copies via 2D images is extremely laborious and time-consuming. AI technologies are being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing lots of images to be cross-referenced and stored in hours. . AI will also make the restoration and preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and is vastly superior to previous methods.
Airborne technology (机载技术) is being increasingly used in the fight to preserve our cultural heritage.
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) has already been used to reveal over 60, 000 Mayan structures that were lying undiscovered in the jungles of Guatemala, without needing a single boot on the ground. Drones (无人机) are also being used to document and monitor huge areas and remove the need for all that costly manpower.
Human interaction with the most important sites and architecture is doing a great deal of harm. Virtual Reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. , VR technology will gradually become the way that people experience them. We'll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at (and touch!) artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.
. Efforts in research, data sharing and project work will need to be pooled internationally. Using the technical expertise of specialist organizations will become ever more important to the sustainable promoting and preserving of the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.
A. It is being used to save and find itB. Technology has shaped conflict in several ways
C. But it is now the most essential weapon in the battle
D. Our cultural heritage will be protected via technology
E. This will enable even better and more accurate copies to be created
F. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded
G. When it measures distances by hitting a target and analyzing the reflected light

Have you been exercising and eating clean, but when you step on the scale, it says you've gained a few pounds? "That's normal, and it doesn't mean that your workouts are not effective,"says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
"A person's scale mass is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs," he says. "Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. " So if you're gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it's probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can't tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat — your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don't get too excited — it's just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person's weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body Lhs composition. Keep in mind that if you're exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
(1)、What can we know from Dolgan's words?A、Your weight changes little during a day. B、Your scale mass is affected by many factors. C、Your workout is not effective if you gain weight. D、Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.(2)、What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months?A、You will weigh less. B、Your muscle mass will decrease. C、Your body fat will increase. D、Your body composition will change.(3)、How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body?A、30 pounds. B、60 pounds. C、100 pounds. D、140 pounds.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?A、Why do we gain weight? B、How to work out effectively? C、What is the composition of our body? D、Why does my workout cause weight gain? -

Several years ago, Jason Box, a scientist from Ohio, flew 31 giant rolls of white plastic to a glacier (冰川) in Greenland. He and his team spread them across 10,000 feet of ice, and then left. His idea was that the white blanket would reflect back the rays of the sun, keeping the ice cool below. When he came back to check the results, he found it worked. Exposed ice had melted faster than covered ice. Hehad not only saved two feet of glacier in a short time. No coal plants (煤炭工厂) were shut down, no jobs were lost, and nobody was taxed or fired. Just the sort of fix we're looking for.
"Thank you, but no thank you. " says Ralph King, a climate scientist. Hetold Grey Childs, author and commentator, that people think technology can save the planet, "but there are other things we need to deal with, like consumption (消费). They burned $50,000 just for the helicopter to bring the plastic to the glacier. "This experiment gives people false hope that climate change can be fixed (解决,处理) without changing human behavior. . It can't. Technology won't give us a free ride (搭便车).
Individuals respond to climate change differently. Climatologist Kelly Smith is hardly alone in her prediction that someday soon we won't be climate victims; we will be climate choosers. More scientists agree with her that if the human race survives, the engineers will get smarter, the tools will get better, and one day we will control the climate. But what then? "Just the mention of us controlling the climate sent a small shiver (颤抖) down my back", Grey Childs writes, "Something sounds wrong about it. "
Me? I like it better when the earth takes care of itself. I guess one day we will have to run theplace, but for the moment, sitting at my desk. looking out at the trees bending wildly and the wind howling. I'm happy not to be in charge.
(1)、What does Ralph King think of Jason Box's experiment?A、It's a possible solution to climate change. B、It's a misleading attempt to fix the climate. C、It's a successful experiment on saving the glacier. D、It arouses people's attention to the problem of global warming.(2)、Which statement would Kelly Smith most probably agree with?A、The fight against climate change will not succeed. B、Humans will succeed in controlling climate in the future. C、Technology is not the final solution, let alone its high cost. D、Jason's experiment plays a significant role in fixing climate change.(3)、What is Grey Childs's attitude to human's controlling the climate?A、Supportive. B、Tolerant (容忍的). C、Sceptical (怀疑的). D、Unclear.(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A、Should we fix the climate with technology? B、Is climate change a threatening problem? C、Why is the earth climate getting worse? D、What if all the glaciers disappeared? -

Ms Yuting Zhou is an early-career environmental advisor working on industrial wastewater pollution management, In her work, she's learning about an important type of environmental pollution, and finding ways to help companies manage water resources better.
When we asked Yuting how old she was when she got interested in environmental problems, we were surprised by her response. "I must have been about six years old. I used to watch an American TV series about an environmentalist Superhero named Captain Planet. "
There is one serious pollution event somewhere in the world. The concern about environmental issues deeply influenced Yuting. But how does one prepare to be a "Superwoman"? For Yuting, it came down to a reflection on what she might be good at — in her case, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects-and making considered choices in her education.

My mum and grandma drove me to a 5km race. There was a fierce thunderstorm, and when we got there, I had to wait for it to pass beneath an overhang (屋檐) with the other runners. I started to feel a little nervous, because some of the people there looked really fast. They had proper running shoes and long skinny legs. They were all different ages. I wasn't wearing running clothes; just a normal T-shirt and shorts.
An hour after the official start time even though it was still raining, the race organiserssaid we could go. That morning, I was running confidently and feeling strong. The route went through a neighbourhoodand there were quite a few people cheering us on, but I didn't see any faces I knew. It started to pour again, but I love running in the rain: It keeps me cool and I can keep going for longer, even when I get tired, when I run, I don't wear a watch to see what distance I'm at;I just focus on moving, breathing and how my body feels.
At one point, I came to a split (分叉) in the course. A woman who was directing us blocked off (封锁) the route which I was meant to take and told me to go the other way, so I followed her directions.
I was confused, but just kept running. I knew I must be close to finishing the 5km, but I couldn't see the finishing line. After a while I saw route directions for a 10km race. I was worried and thought I was lost, but had to keep going. My body started to get tired and my muscles a little sore. I said to myself, "You're almost there. Just keep breathing. Endangered species
An endangered species is a group of animals or plants that could soon become extinct. Many species are nearly extinct and could disappear off the face of the earth very soon if we don't do anything to save them. There are many reasons why species become endangered.
Habitat loss is the main factor. And this happens in two ways. When humans move into a new area, the animals' habitat is destroyed and there is nowhere for them to live and nothing for them to eat because humans chop down trees and build houses and farms. Chemicals in rivers and poisons on farms result in the destruction of animals' homes and food supplies.
Animals have been brought to the edge of extinction because they are killed for their highly valued meat, fur, bones or skin, or just for sport. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures like whales and sharks becoming endangered species.
We should take care not to pollute natural areas, and farmers or companies who destroy animal habitats should face severe financial punishment. The public can help out by refusing to buy any product made from these animals' body parts. Governments can help, too, by making it against the law to hunt, fishor trade in endangered species. They can also provide funding for animal reserves, to protect animals from extinction by breeding more endangered animals, which they later release into the wild.
A. Our recent measures, however, have helped to improve the situation.B. Eventually, all the creatures on the earth will enjoy being together.
C. Endangered species are also the result of hunting and fishing.
D. Animals' homes are also destroyed because of pollution.
E. Extinction happens when the last of the species has died out and there will be no more.
F. If we all cooperate and take these steps,we will protect these animals for future generations.
G. So what can individuals and governments do to protect endangered species?

When I mentioned to some friends that we all have accents, most of them proudly replied, "Well, I speak perfect English/Chinese/etc. "But this kind of misses the point.
More often than not, what we mean when we say someone "has an accent" is that their accent is different from the local one, or that pronunciations are different from our own. But this definition of accents is limiting and could give rise to prejudice. Funnily enough, in terms of the language study, every person speaks with an accent. It is the regular differences in how we produce sounds that define our accents. Even if you don't hear it yourself, you speak with some sort of accent. In this sense, it's pointless to point out that someone"hasan accent". We all do!
Every person speaks a dialect ,too. In the field of language study, a dialect is a version of a language that is characterized by its variations of structure, phrases and words. For instance," You got eat or not? "(meaning "Have you eaten?" )is an acceptable and understood question in Singapore Oral English. The fact that this expression would cause a standard American English speaker to take pause doesn't mean that Singapore Oral English is "wrong" or "ungrammatical". The sentence is well-formed and clearly communicative, according to native Singapore English speakers' solid system of grammar. Why should it be wrong just because it's different?
We need to move beyond a narrow conception of accents and dialects — for the benefit of everyone.
Language differences like these provide insights into people's cultural experiences and backgrounds. In a global age, the way one speaks is a distinct part of one's identity. Most people would be happy to talk about the cultures behind their speech. We'd learn more about the world we live in and make friends along the way.
(1)、What does the author think of his/ her friends'response in paragraph 1?A、It reflects their self confidence. B、It reflects their language levels. C、It misses the point of communication. D、It misses the real meaning of accents.(2)、Why does the author use the example of Singapore Oral English?A、To justify the use of dialects. B、To show the diversity of dialects. C、To correct a grammatical mistake. D、To highlight a traditional approach.(3)、What does the author recommend us to do in the last paragraph?A、Learn to speak with your local dialect. B、Seek for an official definition of accents. C、Appreciate the value of accents and dialects. D、Distinguish our local languages from others'.(4)、What is the author's attitude towards accent?A、Favourable B、Intolerant C、Doubtful D、Unclear -

It's no secret that inhaling(吸入)smoke is bad for your lungs. But now, scientists are suggesting smoke may also carry and spread infectious diseases. The theory, published in Science Magazine, is based on the research that found wildfire smoke is full of thousands of species of microorganisms(微生物). Some of these microorganisms, including bacteriaand fungal spores(真菌抱子). are known to cause disease.
The new research suggests that when a wildfire burns plants or animal matter and disturbs soils, it exposes thousands of species of bacteria and fungi that otherwise might not easily become airborne. You might think the high heat from fire would kill these organisms, but one study mentioned in the article found that some bacteria even multiply after fires. Scientists say the organisms stick with smoke particulates(颗粒物), allowing them to travel thousands of miles across continents.
Dr. Peter Chen, director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, is interested in the theory but somewhat skeptical that the microorganisms in smoke would actually cause infections. Many bacteria and fungi don't cause lung infections, says Chen, but it's certainly possible that a significant number could worsen symptoms in someone with a preexisting lung condition. "I always thought it was the particulates in smoke that were causing these issues," says Chen. "But when I read this, I started thinking, could it be the microorganisms that are also worsening existing illnesses?"
Whether the microorganisms in smoke actually cause infections or simply worsen potential respiratory(呼吸的)issues, the article raises a new health threat that is "certainly alarming", says Kelsey Jack, an associate professor of environmental and development economics. This is especially true for lower-income populations, Jack says, because people with fewer protective means are often more exposed to the environment. If smoke is affecting the air quality in a certain area, the people who work outside, or who have to go to the office on foot or by bike will inhale more smoke than those who drive.
But until more research is done, Chen says the best thing people can do is just follow existing recommendations when air quality is poor-including staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, using HEPA filters and running air conditioning.
(1)、What can we know about the microorganisms from Paragraph 2?A、Some could reproduce after fires. B、They could be killed by high heat. C、They could possibly travel through air by themselves. D、Some could copy the smoke particulates.(2)、How do most microorganisms affect people according to Dr. Peter Chen?A、They will cause lung infection. B、They might worsen lung diseases. C、They will destroy living environments. D、They might damage respiratory systems.(3)、Why are lower-income people suffering more than others according to Kelsey Jack?A、They live in poor areas. B、They drive to and from work· C、They have suffered from lung disease. D、They are exposed to polluted air more frequently.(4)、What does Chen advise people to do in the last paragraph?A、To wait for the results of more researches. B、To ignore the air quality and to work out outdoors. C、To follow previous suggestions on dealing with poor air quality. D、To avoid using filters and air conditioning. -

We all know cameras. But have you heard of Google's new camera? It is a small, smart device, called Clips. It comes with a case that has a clip (夹子), but it's not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photographs out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.
This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera ,with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smart phone.
Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms (计算程序)to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. "Once it learns that there's a face you see frequently, it'll try to get nice photos of those faces. " said JustonPayne, the device's product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved training it to know what happiness looks like. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot-like when a child's hand is over the camera, or if it is thrown in a dark purse.
The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.
Did people think it was strange? Yes, but Payne said nobody need worry about safety. A green light on the front shows that the device is on. Besides, it is not connected to the Internet.
"This product is only possible because technology has advanced. " Payne said. It was only in the past year that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. "Going forward, we're likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps. " He added.
(1)、Which is the most striking feature of Clips?A、It is pretty small and cute. B、It takes photos on its own. C、It has a longer battery life. D、It can be worn on your clothes.(2)、Why does the author mention "child" in Para 2?A、To clarify a concept. B、To present a fact C、To explain a feeling. D、To make a comparison.(3)、How can one see the photos taken by Clips?A、By connecting Clips to the Internet. B、By learning the machine algorithms. C、By linking Clips with your mobile phone. D、By advancing science technology further.(4)、What is Payne's attitude towards the application of AI into apps?A、Critical. B、Positive. C、Indifferent. D、Doubtful. -
