Mary felt satisfied with her heartfelt words. She carefully copied them, caught an envelope and a stamp from her bedside, and rushed to the mailbox with her entry. "Dad will be overjoyed with a gift card," she thought optimistically.

Days turned into weeks as Mary eagerly checked the mailbox each day, hoping for news about the contest. However, as Father's Day was just around the corner, she still hadn't received any response.

"What should I do now?" she wondered, feeling disappointed. She had no gift and no money and time was running out. But Mary was determined to show her love and appreciation. She had to come up with a plan. Mary closed her eyes and took a deep breath, searching for a solution.

The ancient town of Fenghuang is a place with beautiful village life in rural China. Having travelled directly from the busy city, I regard Fenghuang as a better  (choose) to have a breath of the fresh air.

When Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Alabama, in 1956, no one would have predicted that she would circle the Earth one day. When she was three years old, her parents 1  to Chicago. In the kindergarten, Jemison 2  her teacher by telling her she wanted to be a scientist. The 3  was unusual for any girl, let alone an African-American girl. But she never 4  her dream.

As an artist who shares her journey on social media, I'm often asked by curious followers how to begin an art journey. Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer. I do remember, though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I've put together some good tips for starting an art journey.

Start small. I suggest using a sketchbook (素描本) for small studies. These small studies provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future. You'll want to look back on your journey to see how far you've come.

Paint often and paint from life. There's no better way to improve than to put in those brush miles. Whether you paint still lifes, portraits, or landscapes, paint from life as much as possible.

Continually challenge yourself to try something new. Artistic growth can be a bit painful. Welcome to the club；we've all been there. I love taking on challenges. I once took up a challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.

 Seeking and accepting constructive feedback (反馈) is crucial to growth. I post my work on social media and, in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel valued and respected, no matter my level of artistic ability. 

The journey you're on won't follow a straight path. Push through, give it time and put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.

B. Make career plans and set goals. 

C. Don't throw away your beginner art.

D. Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so. 

E. You'll hit roadblocks, and you'll feel discouraged at times.

F. Evaluate your performance and, if needed, redefine your role.

One of the world's most significant ecological and environmental problems is desertification. Desertification is a type of land degradation in which a relatively dry land region becomes increasingly arid (干旱的), typically losing its bodies of water as well as vegetation and wildlife. It's happening all over the world and it's happening very quickly.

There are several causes of desertification. The immediate cause is the removal of most vegetation. This is driven by a number of factors, such as drought, tillage (耕种) for agriculture, overgrazing (过度放牧) and deforestation for fuel or construction materials. Some farmers farm their land too much, without giving the soil a chance to recover. Others allow their animals to eat up large areas of grass far too quickly — at a rate that makes it impossible for the grass to grow back. Cutting down trees is another major cause of desertification. Trees help protect the soil. Without trees, the soil easily blows away in the wind or washes away in floods. Besides, wildlife plays an important role in the preservation of vegetation and soil. So removal of animals is also one of the main drivers of increasing desertification. Moreover, some parts of the Earth are hotter today than they used to be. This change in climate has dried out a lot of land. 

The consequences of desertification can be disastrous. So we need to take steps to prevent desertification. We should pay attention to how much energy we use in our daily lives. That way, we can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released. We can walk or cycle short distances, and use less water. We can also protect our forests by reusing paper and not using disposable chopsticks. What's more, we should try to make people around us aware of the problem and encourage them to change their daily habits in the same way. As long as we create a harmonious environment, life on this planet will live in peace and abundance, and stop the pace of desertification together.

I was sitting next to Missy in my 9th-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project: In groups, we were to create a newspaper about the culture we were studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett told us that she would take into consideration our choices and let us know the results the next day.

After the bell rang the next day, Missy and I waited anxiously as Mrs. Bartlett started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy's name was called. I would be in the same group, I thought, as I knew we had chosen each other. Then the other three names were called. Mine was not included. There must be some mistake!

Then I heard it. The last group: Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina! I could feel tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group-the boy, Mauro, who barely spoke English and his lack of friends; Juliette, who, from West Asia, was always covered by long skirts to her ankles; and the other girl who wore odd clothes. Oh, how I wanted to be with my friends!

I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Knowing what I was there for, she looked at me and gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

"I know what you want, Karina," she said, "but your group needs you. I need you to help them get a passing grade on this assignment. Will you help them?"

I was astonished. She had seen something in me even I hadn't seen. "Yes," I replied. I couldn't believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. Then I bravely walked to where the others in my group were, sat down and started to work.

Tai chi is a centuries-old Chinese martial art and an internationally popular form of exercise. It is a series of postures (姿势) and motions that develops one's  (strong) and flexibility through careful, flowing movements and focused breathing. Each posture  (slow) transforms into another, and we gradually need to shift (转移) our weight  (maintain) balance. At the end, we return to the starting position: in other words, all of the movements  (connect) in an endless, continuous flow.

The practice of tai chi is rooted in  (tradition) Chinese philosophy, particularly the ancient concept of yin-yang. The tai chi symbol, or taijitu,  (show) yin and yang together: yin symbolizes the dark, female force in nature, while yang represents the bright, male force. Yin cannot exist without yang,  yang cannot exist without yin. Tai chi aims to achieve balance  opposites in life: yin and yang; soft and hard; mind and body, and so on. At the heart of tai chi is the concept of qi,  generally translates as "vital energy". The different exercises help move the qi through your body,  (produce) positive effects on one's mental and spiritual health.

Nicole Edna walked onto the crowded airplane holding her tiny baby, the kind who cried for the whole flight. She was afraid she would be the least 1  passenger. And that was before her baby got sick and vomited (呕吐) all over her 2  and seat cushion. "I was afraid that they would have to bring the plane back to replace the seat and seat belt, and everyone would 3 ," she later wrote in the social media.
