  • 2、第二节,阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.

Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn't working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.

But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita's house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, "Tomorrow we're going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see."

The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was ... nothing in front of us. "I don't want to take pictures of this," I complained.

Uncle laughed, "Start walking, Amy. I promise you'll be surprised." After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.

"That's Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree." As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).

Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. "Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?" he asked. "Of course!" I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.

Like Uncle said, Kabir's forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Last year, I fell into a deep depression. It was caused by a car accident. I was in physical recovery from the accident and suddenly all of my old hurts started coming up. I found myself crying on the floor of my apartment. I didn't want to feel this way anymore.

Let's pause for a moment. I don't want you to bleed with me or to pity me. But I also don't want to cover my reality. And the truth is, beneath the shiny photos you see on the Internet, I'm still a work in progress. Like all of us, I'm doing the best I can and making the best choices I can. Back to the evening when I found myself lying on the floor.

What happened next? I started writing.

There was a TV show I absolutely loved. I started writing fan fiction. It provided a beautiful place of escape from the thoughts swimming in my head.  I started to feel like myself again.

After completing four-part fan fiction totaling around 12,000 words, I had an idea. I should write a novel to give a hand to those like me.

I continued writing, having no idea where it would lead. I didn't know I would publish it but, after much resistance on my part I finally made the decision to publish the book under my own name. No pen name. No hiding on the deep bowels of the Internet.

And so here we are.  Sure, readers will enjoy the twists and turns. And I can see myself in the character.  I wrote it to help people. To give them a place to belong to. A place to talk about this fictional world. The very same thing that saved me last year.

If the story provides this to just one person, I've done my job.

    A. I'm not perfect.

    B. I didn't see a way out.

    C. The depression started to lift.

    D. But that's not my real motivation.

    E. The day before the release of the book.

    F. Sometimes I even feel I am the character.

    G. I've become a successful writer of many books.

Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth's precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable may be doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of "wish-cycling" — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cups and pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said: "Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven't been cleaned before being recycled."

Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.

The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease (油脂). Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled. When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often cannot go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.

"It's vital as a nation that we get better at effective ‘pre-cycling'—sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates," added Mr. Heaton.

(1)、What's the truth of "wish-cycling" according to the first paragraph?
A、The desire to lead a sustainable life. B、The good intention to help recycling. C、The habit of throwing items that end up in landfills. D、The practice of recycling items that cannot be recycled.
(2)、What has experts at Biffa concluded after their analysis?
A、Wish-cycling is on the rise in recent years. B、People are becoming more eco-conscious. C、Pollution happens less frequently in recycling facilities. D、People are used to cleaning recyclable waste before putting it in the bin.
(3)、Which of the following is a proper way of recycling?
A、Dispose of electronics together with household waste. B、Skip the step of checking the on-packaging recycling label. C、Check the resin code of plastics to see whether it is recyclable or not. D、Cut off the top of old pizza box and throw the rest to the recycling bin.
(4)、Which is the most suitable title for the text?
    A、Recycling: A Big Project B、Wish-cycling: A New Trend C、Pre-cycling: An Effective Method D、Wish-cycling: A Growing Concern

In the world of online shopping, many online purchases are based on careful consideration of star ratings and product reviews left by complete strangers. But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase? And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind? Here's what you need to know.

Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. "We live in a time when trust is completely under attack," Pardes says. "so people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they're reading. Fake(假的) reviews do exist. Fake reviews include, but aren't limited to, robot-generated reviews and reviews that are influenced by the seller."

Of course, not all user reviews you read online are fake. High-quality reviews are a valuable tool when making a variety of purchases. Pardes says Trustpilot features a team in place to detect and remove fake reviews. Perhaps one of the best-known review websites is Yelp. "Yelp takes measures to ensure high-quality content," says Kathleen Liu, a company spokesperson. That includes allowing Yelp's community of business owners and users to flag content that may go against the site's terms of service.

Since user reviews do provide helpful information, review as a whole shouldn't be repudiated. But how can you tell the difference between what's real and what's not? It's close to impossible for the everyday consumer. But if you conduct your investigation carefully, you can make an informed purchase.

Check more than one review source. Pardes advises consumers to read reviews on multiple platforms. "If you're about to book a $10,000 vacation, you'd never rely only on the photos and the reviews posted by that hotel's marketing team," he says. "You are going to want to use a third-party independent resource." Read more than a handful of reviews. Pardes says there is "safety in numbers." Question perfection. Pardes says consumers shouldn't trust reviews that show only five stars. "Nobody's perfect so you can't possibly have a perfect five-star review in every single category of your business." he says.

(1)、What does Pardes imply about consumers in Paragraph2?
A、They are often influenced by sellers. B、They must have long lost trust in sellers. C、They often fail to recognize fake reviews. D、They should be cautious of product reviews now.
(2)、What do Yelp and Trustpilot have in common?
A、Both aim to offer real user reviews. B、Both produce robot-generated reviews. C、Both hire professionals to rate companies. D、Both serve mainly like-minded business owners.
(3)、What does the underlined word "repudiated" in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A、Overestimated. B、Dismissed. C、Hidden. D、Blamed.
(4)、What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A、Where to look for reliable reviews. B、The truth behind five-star ratings. C、How to make full use of online reviews. D、The significance of informed purchases.

The new member to the UAE's astronaut training program, the first female Emirati (阿联酋) astronaut, hopes that her mechanical engineering degree will be her ticket to the moon.

Nora AlMatrooshi and her fellow trainee astronaut Mohammad AlMulla were selected from 4000 highly qualified candidates to lead the nation's 9.8 million citizens into space.

The two are looking forward to the laborious 30-month program ahead of them which has already begun with them getting their divers' licences, picking up the Russian language and coaching for their many media interviews—and will move on to flight and weightlessness school at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas and eventually cruel survival training.

"They will need mechanical engineers to build a base on the moon," says the 28-year-old, who represented her nation at the Mathematics Olympics and worked as an engineer at the National Petroleum Construction Company.

AlMatrooshi says she has dreamed of the stars since kindergarten, when her teacher set up the classroom as the Lunar surface and the five-year-old future astronaut constructed a cardboard moonbase. That early longing to explore space charted her degree choice.

"I actually went after it. I chose to study a degree in mechanical engineering because of a documentary I watched when I was in high school. It was about a group of astronauts going to the International Space Station and the role of the mechanical engineer was highlighted," she said.

Leading big construction projects in the desert has helped equip the daughter of two academics—a PhD father and English teacher mother—for Lunar construction.

AlMatrooshi's fellow trainee astronaut, UAE police helicopter pilot AlMulla, meanwhile says astronaut training has been "a big career change".

"I spent 15 years qualifying to be a pilot, including training in Australia for my commercial pilot's licence," says the father of two. "As a pilot you get used to mastering everything—suddenly I'm changing my path."

"I'm a big fan of SpaceX, the rockets and even the fancy space suits. And hopefully all four of us—and all the astronauts who come after us will get to be a part of future missions—perhaps even to the moon eventually."

(1)、What preparation have they made before the training program?
A、They have learned to deal with the press. B、They have had cruel survival training. C、They have grasped their native language. D、They have done some weightlessness training.
(2)、Which is the major factor for AlMatrooshi to be a member of the training program?
A、She got help from her academic parents. B、She has had a big dream since her childhood. C、She has experience in big construction projects. D、She was the winner of the Mathematics Olympics.
(3)、What does the underlined part "I'm changing my path" refer to?
A、I'll be a master of life. B、I'm an enthusiast for SpaceX. C、I'm settling my new problem. D、I'm starting a new life from scratch.
(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A、The fans of Space X B、Dream and achievements C、Passion and preparations D、Future astronaut training program

I went to a grocery store for candy that afternoon, Honestly speaking, it was Out of my way and out of the circle that I lived my life within, But it was meant for me to be there at this particular time.

After selecting my items, I went to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in the line in front of me. Her clothes were worn out, and she looked so tired. She had a toddler(学步儿童) who could not have been more than three and a newborn who was just a few weeks old. The toddler was running and jumping around just like toddlers do. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.

She managed to get her groceries on the conveyor belt during all the chaos of her kids, and the clerk started checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids but didn't know what to do.. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disruption.

The line behind me continued to snake its way into an aisle (过道). The pressure was growing. As I watched her, I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to, put back. The people in line behind me were getting impatient and annoyed that she was holding them up even more now. The dancing toddler and screaming baby just added to the stress of her situation.

I touched her on the arm and asked her, a simple question, "Honey, do you need these items for your children?"

."Yes, ma'am,but I don't have enough on my card to pay for them. I need them for Thanksgiving." My heart broke for this mama." Ring up those groceries for her," I said to the clerk. "What?" the clerk asked.

Diving made my world bigger.It took me three years and three tries to get certified. but I'm glad I persisted.

Learning to dive is a lot like learning to drive a car: You study the theory, practice with an instructor. and become qualified. From there. proficiency( 熟练) depends on how often you dive. further training. and your own self-reliance. Regardless of your goals, diving is more accessible and wondrous than I ever imagined.

But not everyone wants to or can dive, and that 's fair enough. Whether you' re a snorkeler (潜水员),surfer, or sailor or you simply enjoy dipping your toes into the sea while on holiday, you can still be aware of the life unfolding under that glittering blue cover and help protect it.

Experts urge that at least 30 percent be protected to safeguard marine ecosystems. which in turn will help protect our health and well-being. The ocean supplies more than half our oxygen, absorbs carbon dioxide, regulates our climate, and supports much of the world's economy. We need it a lot more than it needs us.

Take Florida,for example, it' s bordered by North America's only living coral barrier reef (礁石) and the third largest in the world.It is also essential to its economy, generating an estimated $ 1.1 billion annually in tourism. The reef protects the coastline, too, since healthy coral reefs absorb 97 percent of a wave s energy.

A study has found that 70 percent of Florida's coral reefs are experiencing a net loss of reef habitat. Exactly facing these concerns is what I mean by seeing the sea- the good. the bad. The important.We can use it to inform our choices, from traveling more carefully. To examining how we run our businesses. No one can do everything, but everyone can do something. The ocean is a remarkable teacher, and it's never too late to start learning.

    A. Knowledge is power.

    B. I didn't take to diving immediately.

    C. So I'd encourage anyone to give it a try.

    D. Adventure sometimes involves pushing limits.

    E. Marine life needs a safe ecological environment.

    F. The reef is home to more than 500 species of fish.

    G. Right now, less than 3 percent of the ocean is considered highly protected.

Scientists have invented a new way to make electricity. Humidity( 湿气) in the air is what helps create the electricity. Since the new device generates electricity from the air, the scientists call it "Air gen".

The new device is very small and very simple. In it. water molecules from the air move through tiny holes from the upper part of a material down into the lower part of the material. The holes are the key. The material has lots of teeny- tiny holes called"nanopores", which are 100 nanormeters(纳米) across. That's about l. 000 times thinner than the width of a human hair. As the water molecules work their way through the nanopores, they upset the electrical balance between the upper and lower parts of the material, leaving the upper part with a greater charge. This "imbalance" between the two parts is what creates the electricity.

Currently. the device only makes a small amount of electricity- enough to power a small sensor. But in lab tests. the Air gen. which is a little bigger than n fingernail, produced that electricity all day and all night for a week, powered by nothing but the air.

Scientists have tried to make electricity from humidity before, but those methods didn't work for long. or were expensive to make. But in 2020,Dr. Yao and his team found a way of getting electricity from humidity using special "nanowires" made from bacteria and later made the key discovery of the Air-gen: almost any material can create electricity in this way as long as it has nanopores of the right size.

They are hopeful that the Air gen will become an important green energy source. But some scientists have suggested that it might be hard for the Air-gen to create enough electricity to really make a difference- especially compared to power sources like solar energy.

Because the device so thin, Dr. Yao and his team believe that many Air -gen layers could be piled on top of each other to create more electricity without taking up more space. Dr. Yao says, "What I envision is that sometime in the future, we can get clean electricity wherever we go.'

(1)、What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A、How thin nanopores actually are. B、What role water molecules play. C、What are used to make electricity. D、How electricity is made from the air.
(2)、What can we learn about the Air gen?
A、It can produce electricity 24/7. B、It is like a fingernail in shape. C、It is expensive to make now. D、It can provide power for a house.
(3)、What do scientists expect about the Air-gen?
A、It's a technology for charging electricity. B、It's a mobile device for convenience. C、It's a source of green energy. D、It's a replacement of solar energy.
(4)、What does the underlined word"envision"in the last paragraph mean?
    A、Invent. B、Imagine. C、Design. . D、Suspect. .

For the first time, astronomers have caught a star in the act of eating a planet. The star. known as ZTF SLRN-2020,exists approximately 12 ,000 light -years away in our galaxy.

"For decades. we've been able to see the before and after," says study leader Kishalay De. "Before, when the planets are still orbiting very close to their star, and after. when a planet has already been swallowed up, and the star is giant. What we were missing was catching the star in the act, where you have a planet going through this fate in real-time. That's what makes this discovery really exciting. "

In 2020,De was studying data, hoping to find evidence of two stars combining with each other. This usually results in bursts of light thousands of times brighter than the stars themselves. But one shining star De discovered was much dimmer(黯淡的),only 100 times brighter. Also, the crash of two stars usually produces hot gas. However, this one was surrounded by dust molecules(分子). De wondered if he had detected a star swallowing a planet.

He and his team spent the next two years examining similar data. NASA provided the final piece of evidence they needed. The images allowed them to confirm that the molecules were traces of a star eating its planet. The scientists said that as the planet was being swallowed. it  displaced hot gas from the star. The gas then cooled and created dust. Pieces of the planet also blew away from the star, producing more dust.

Some scientists believe Earth will also be consumed by the Sun in about five billion years. But Mansi Kasliwal, a professor, says humans will not be around then. The increasing heat from the expanding Sun will evaporate(使蒸发) all the water from Earth long before it gets close enough to swallow it, making it uninhabitable. Smadar Naoz, an astronomer, agrees that the Earth's water sources will dry up."Whether or not the Sun will swallow the Earth is quite controversial," she says."But it wouldn't matter because it will no longer be our beautiful. Earth with an atmosphere and oceans."

(1)、What fate does De think the planet is undergoing?
A、It is being swallowed. B、It is being abandoned. C、It is becoming larger. D、It is growing older.
(2)、What is the evidence of a star eating its planet?
    A、Hot gas. B、Dust molecules. C、Pieces of a planet. D、Bursts of brighter light.
(3)、What do Mansi Kasliwal and Smadar Naoz agree with each other?
A、The Earth will be eaten by the Sun, B、Humans will move to another planet. C、The water on Earth will disappear. D, The Earth will become more beautiful.
(4)、What might be the best title for the text?
A、Scientists Make an Unusual Discovery B、Stars and Planets Are Born and Die C、The Earth will not Be Eaten by the Sun D、Astronomers Detect a Star Swallowing a Planet

I was living with my grandparents at the time. Our grandparents had recently retired. While they'd managed to save enough to buy a home, they were short on living expenses.

So, our grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the entire building clean was a stressful job for one man, Realizing this, 1 began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying waste baskets, for a small wage.

When winter arrived, he fired up the school's furnace(火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel(铲) the huge pile of coal chips required to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a commitment that required me to set my alarm clock an hour earlier each morning. I'd go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I'd go home, change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I'd head back to school, always at the last minute.

It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower. On two mornings, at the very instant I stepped onto the sidewalk in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal for students to head to class. This astonishing coincidence caused me to improve my precision. I carefully planned each phase of my morning activity. I paced myself. Often I'd step onto the school's sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This accomplishment gave me enormous pride- and some strange feelings.

Decades later, at a school reunion, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, who had been in charge of ringing the bell by pressing a button in his office. I couldn't resist boasting(吹噓). I told Mr. Spiry about how well I had ordered my complex morning work back then, how my timing had been faultless. "Oh that," he said,"Do you recall that my office windows looked out over the front of the building? I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk, I'd ring the bell.
