Around the country and around the world, there is no shortage of human suffering. Poverty, disease, violence, hurricanes, wildfire and more are constantly troubling humanity（人类）, and even our best efforts thus far can't solve all of everybody's needs. Many are looking for places to cut cost, and one of the first places that comes up in conversation is too much spending on space exploration. What good is it to conduct micro-gravity experiments repeatedly when children are starving? Why launch so many space-related projects when nuclear war threatens our planet?

This is a line of thinking that has been coming up throughout history. Yes, it's short-sighted, in that it fails to recognize that our greatest problems require long-term investment(投资）, and that society's greatest advances come about through hard work, research, development of decades after that is made. Investing in science is investing in the betterment of humanity.

Over these years, much of the results of the space research have been adapted to be applicable to our daily lives. For example, NASA's advancements in the areas of robotics have given manufacturers(制造商) an additional basis for the development of more advanced artificial limbs. Additionally, certain nutritional enrichment ingredients that were developed by NASA have been integrated into baby food formula.

Space technology has also helped improve economies. Within the next three years, the space exploration and space tourism industry are expected to be valued at 3 trillion USD. It is true that for every dollar we spend on the space program, the US economy receives about $8 of economic benefit. Space exploration can also serve as a motivation for children to enter the fields of science and engineering.

To many people, the idea of space travel may still seem far from practical. However, I believe that it is important that we keep going forward or we'll risk delaying further discoveries and technological advancements that will be beneficial to us.

1.3 million people in the Netherlands are older than 75 years — and one large supermarket chain is making sure they're not getting too lonely in their elder years.

The Dutch government with its campaign, "One Against Loneliness", has encouraged organizations, towns, companies, and individuals to find solutions. Jumbo, the second largest Dutch supermarket chain, is doing its part with creative chat checkouts (付款台). 

The idea for the "Kletskassa", which translates to "chat checkout", started more than two years ago — and in the summer of 2019 the first Kletskassa was opened in Vlijmen in Noord-Brabant. 

This resulted in many positive reactions from customers — and now Jumbo is swelling the project further: By this time next year, there will be chat checkouts in 200 stores across the country where more people can go for a conversation. When choosing the stores, areas where loneliness is a major factor are carefully considered. 

Colette Cloosterman-van Eerd, CCO of Jumbo and the driving force behind the campaign against loneliness, is closely involved (参与) in the project. She said, "Many people, especially the elderly, sometimes feel lonely. As a family business and supermarket chain, we are at the heart of society." 

"Our stores are an important meeting place for many people and we want to play a role in identifying and reducing loneliness. We do this in various ways, including our Kletskassas. We are proud that many of our cashiers like to take a seat behind a Kletskassa. They support the project and want to help people to make real contact with them out of interest." 

"It is a small action, but very valuable, especially in a world that is digitizing (数字化) and getting faster and faster."

My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn't fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn't get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed.

When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.

Wisconsin's Great Lakes are home to great lighthouses. Here are some lighthouses worth visiting along Lake Michigan, from south to north.

Wind Point, Racine

This 108-foot lighthouse on a point north of Racine was built in 1880. It's open for tours and climbs up the tower from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the first Sunday of the month, June through October, and from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. the Saturday before that Sunday, July through September. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids aged between 6 and 11. The park and beach around the lighthouse are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

North Point, Milwaukee

This 74-foot lighthouse alongside a Queen Anne style keeper's quarters is a landmark in the city's Lake Park. After the coast guard decommissioned (停用) it in 1997, it stood vacant (空置的) until a friendly group restored the structure and opened it as a museum in 2007. Tours are now offered from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday year round, plus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the summer. Tours cost $8 for adults, $5 for seniors (65+) and $5 for students and kids (5-11).

Port Washington Breakwater (防波堤)

This Art Deco-style lighthouse replaced an older wooden structure in 1935 as part of a Works Progress Administration project. Tours aren't available of the small structure, but visitors can walk along the 2,500-foot breakwater to get a closer look.

Rawley Point, Two Rivers

This lighthouse is worth a visit not only for its steel tower rising 113 feet above the beach, but also for its location in Point Beach State Forest. Tours are not available of the working lighthouse, but it's viewable and photographable from the beach. In addition to six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the state forest has 17 miles of hiking trails to explore.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business--a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" She grinned, "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here." Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.

"You two? The talent show for the food bank?" My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. "Abig occasion." Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. "Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you'll be a perfect match." Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.

Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

Roujiamo, also called rougamo, is one of the most popular Chinese snacks. Despite its （compare） to a hamburger, it carries far more geographical and historical meaning.

Roujiamo is （close） associated with the north-central city of Xi'an, in Shaanxi province. Since 202 BCE. Xi'an has been both the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and the capital for 13 more-or-less successive Chinese （dynasty）.

Traditionally, Roujiango mainly consists of two parts--the flatbread and the filling. The meat preparation used to make the filling for roujiamo dates back the Warring States period. The introduction into China of Central Asian-style flatbreads, like the kind used in roujiamo, in general, （owe） to Ban Chao, a Chinese general who spent over 30 years battling union of nomadic（游牧的） tribes to regain control of the farthest western reaches of China. The flatbread bun, called baijimo, takes its name from is today known as Beiji township. There exist differences between the flatbreads used to r different districts in Shaanxi. For example, the flatbread used for Tongguan roujiamo is unlike used in the Xi'an style. Tongguan roujiamo, （name） after a town that, in days long past, guarded a strategic pass roughly 120km east of Xi'an.

Despite its tasty flavor, it's risky （eat） on the go. Proper roujiamo is filled to bursting, regardless of the potential consequences for one's clothes and dry-cleaning budget.

Sixteen years ago, I learned an important life lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab.

Radar is an electronic device that detects planes, ships, coastlines, landmarks, and even storm clouds. The name radar comes from the first letters of the words "radio direction and ranging". As the human eye uses light waves to see, radar "sees" with radio waves. Without radar, planes could not land safely in bad weather and ships could not move safely in thick fog.

In the 1800s it was discovered that radio waves could be reflected from objects. But scientists did not make great advances in radar research until the 1930s, when the world was threatened by war.  It has been used widely in almost every conflict（冲突） since then.

Echoes make it possible for radar to work. When a beam of radio waves is sent out, it strikes an object and returns an echo. This echo is picked up by radar and recorded on a screen similar to television screens. On the screen an observer sees a flash and that can show the direction and distance of the object. 

Airport control towers use radar to guide planes in for safe landings. Almost all large ships depend on radar to prevent collisions with icebergs or other ships. Weather forecasters "see" the size, direction, and speed of storms on radar screens. Astronomers can even use radar to measure accurately the distance from the earth to the moon. Thus, the device has helped achieve major advancements.

 It guards us against possible enemy attacks. We have ballistic missile（弹道导弹）warning systems that can warn us against attacks when missiles are more than 1,000 miles away. Other radar systems can also warn us against enemy aircraft and even spying space satellites.

An Indian research team tried to tell a "cold voice" from a healthy voice. Their research makes use of the fact that human speech, like any musical instrument, does not produce single frequencies of sounds. Even the best trained singers cannot hit pure notes like those from tuning forks. The dominant notes in the human voice are instead accompanied by a series of higher pitch（音高） tones.

Together these sets of notes fit into mathematical patterns called harmonics（和声）, with tones having frequencies that are multiples of the original note. For example, the pitch of the second harmonic note is twice the frequency of the main note and so on. The loudness of these harmonics in speech tends-to fa de as they proceed up the frequency scale. The team reasoned that infection with a cold might change how this decline happened.

To find out, the scientists made use of an unusual resource: recordings of the voices of 630people in Germany, 111 of whom were suffering from a cold. Each was asked to count from one to 40 and describe what they did at the weekend. They also read aloud a fable The North Wind and the Sun, which has been a popular text for speech research since 1949．By breaking down each person's speech into its spectrum（声谱） of component wavelengths, the researchers could identify the dominant frequency and the harmonics in each case. They then used machine-learning to analyse the relationships between the loudness of these harmonics and found patterns that could distinguish the cold voices from the healthy voices.

The team's diagnosis of cold voice shows a 70% accuracy. Faced with another dull Monday at the office, would you take the risk?
