1、阅读理解
I'm a 34-year-old man, married, live in a nice house, and have a successful career as an educational consultant (顾问). But my life was not always so great. My learning disability made my school days very challenging from an early age. I went to a special school where I got plenty of extra help. Still, I suffered the rest of my school days in public schools.
My life improved greatly when I discovered art. The art world gave me a chance to express myself without words. I went to a workshop and gradually got good at making things with clay (黏土). Here I learned my first important lesson: disabled as I was in language, I could still be smart and well express myself with clay. And my confidence came along.
I got my next lesson from rock climbing. It was a fun thing but I was scared from the start. I soon noticed it wasn't a talent thing; it was practice. So I did it more. After about five years of climbing, I found myself in Yosemite Valley on a big wall. I learned that if you fall in love with something and do it all the time, you will get better at it.
Later I decided to apply my previous experience to leaning how to read and write. Every day I practiced reading and writing which I used to avoid as much as possible. After two hard years, I was literate (有读写能力).
Having gone through the long process with art, rock climbing, and reading and writing, now I've got to a point in my life where I know I am smart enough to dive into an area that is totally unknown, hard, but interesting.

2、 第二节 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I knew the fearful day would come sooner or later. However, it came too fast. I was waiting in the dental clinic, nervous about what was to come.
Seeing my nervousness, my parents told me to sit up, and to take deep breaths to keep calm, which worked. However, the peace was short-lived. Almost immediately, my name was called, signaling my turn had come. I pretended to be deaf but my mother gestured at me to stand up. I forced myself to step forward and tripped over a toy left lying around by some kid. My clumsiness (笨拙) got me the attention of everyone in the room.
I had refused my parents' offer to accompany me. I meant to show them that I was brave enough to face the difficulty on my own. Thankfully, I forgot my anxiety as I looked around the dentist's room. Tools of different sizes were arranged neatly in a tray (托盘) on the tiny table which was connected to a chair with buttons and a light hanging right over it. I didn't look at my dentist in the eye as I took my place on the chair nervously. I almost jumped out of the seat when all of a sudden the chair moved and I was lying down facing the bright yellow light.
The dentist spoke in a relaxing voice behind her mask. Everything was going smoothly and I was quite proud of myself. Then something went wrong. I was picking up the cup of water placed next to the chair for patients to rinse (冲洗) their mouths when I caught sight of the dental drill. Panic related to a bad childhood experience involving the drill kicked into me, and I spat out the rinsing water, right into the surprised dentist's face.

Nearly every nation is coming up short — most of them far short — in their efforts to fight climate change, and the world is unlikely to hold warning to the internationally agreed-upon limit, according to a new scientific report.
Gambia, a tiny country in Africa, is the only nation that is cutting emissions (排放) and taking up its share of actions to keep the world from exceeding the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting warming to 1. 5℃ above preindustrial times, according to the report. Only one industrialized nation — the United Kingdom—is even close to doing what it should to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases and finance clean energy for poorer nations, the Climate Action Tracker(CAT)reported.
Enough nations promised big enough carbon pollution cuts that the CAT said the "emissions gap" — the difference between emissions projections (预测) with the promises and what's required to meet the 1. 5-degree goal — dropped by 11%.
"That momentum (势头) has not been maintained," said Bill Hare, report co-author and CEO of Climate Analytics. "We're running short of countries stepping up with additional emission commitments to close the gap. "
Unlike its previous reports, which just looked at promises to cut carbon pollution and policy changes, the new ratings include money issues. Finance is critical to climate negotiations this fall in Scotland, so the report examined commitments by rich nations to help pay for clean energy for poor nations, according to Hare.
That hurt the United States and European Union rankings. The report called efforts by the United States, the European Union, Germany and Japan "insufficient" and more in line with global warming of 3℃ since the late 19th century. The world has already warmed by 1. 1℃ since that time, so these countries will make the world 1. 9℃ warmer than it is now.
Hare said Brazil and Mexico "went backwards" on their fight to control warming. The report lists Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Thailand at the bottom.
(1)、What does the underlined word "exceeding" in paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Limiting. B、Changing. C、Working towards. D、Going beyond.(2)、What do Hare's words in paragraph 4 mean?A、The global warming will be soon controlled. B、Global nations are struggling to bridge "emissions gap". C、More countries are needed to solve the global climate change. D、Many nations keep the promises of carbon pollution reduction.(3)、According to Hare, what will hold back some countries from reducing carbon pollution?A、Additional emission. B、Climate negotiations. C、Smaller population. D、Insufficient funds.(4)、In which section of a website can we find the text?A、Economy. B、Environment. C、Technology. D、Entertainment. -

Previous studies have found that the number of years spent in school relates to cognition (认知) later in life, but few studies have examined the influence of educational quality.
"Our study establishes a link between high-quality education and better later-life cognition and suggests that increased investment in schools could be a powerful strategy to improve cognitive health among older adults in the United States," said Jennifer Manly, senior author of the study.
The study, led by Manly and Dominika Šeblová, a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia, used data from Project Talent, a 1960 survey of high school students across the United States, and follow-up data collected in the Project Talent Aging Study. The researchers examined the relationships between six indicators (指标) of school quality and several measures of cognitive performance in participants nearly 60 years after they left high school. Since high-quality schools may be especially beneficial for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers also examined whether associations differed by geography, gender, race and ethnicity.
The researchers found that attending a school with a higher number of teachers with graduate training was the most consistent predictor of better later-life cognition, especially in language fluency (for example, coming up with words within a category). Attending a school with a high number of graduate-level teachers was about equal to the difference in cognition between a 70-year-old and someone who is one to three years older. Other indicators of school quality were related to some, but not all, measures of cognitive performance.
According to Manly and Šeblová, there may be many reasons explaining why attending schools with well-trained teachers may affect later-life cognition. "Instruction provided by more experienced and knowledgeable teachers might be more intellectually inspiring and provide additional neural or cognitive benefits," said Šeblová, "and attending higher-quality schools may also influence life track, leading to university education and greater earnings, which are in turn linked to better cognition in later life. "
(1)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To remind the public of seniors' health. B、To look into investment in schools. C、To achieve the fairness of humans. D、To attach importance to education.(2)、How did Manly and Šeblová conduct the research?A、By conducting surveys. B、By making comparisons. C、By explaining examples. D、By interviewing the disabled.(3)、What is the result of the study?A、The physical health determines your future life. B、Good education contributes to good later-life cognition. C、Language fluency is based on postgraduate training. D、Good schools should have many well-trained teachers.(4)、What is Manly and Šeblová's attitude to high-quality school education?A、Favorable. B、Doubtful. C、Uncaring. D、Opposing. -

Gelje Sherpa was leading a Chinese climber up Mount Qomolangma when he spotted a Malaysian climber in need of help, and the two men then abandoned the summit (顶峰) in order to rescue the Malaysian climber. They were in the "death zone", an area near the summit of Mount Qomolangma where temperatures are extremely low and where there isn't enough oxygen to breathe.
The Malaysian climber had "nothing" and was on the brink (边缘) of death. Gelje recalled that no one was helping him, no friends, no oxygen, no Sherpas with him and no guides. Stopping at an altitude where the body was rapidly deteriorating (恶化) and where many deaths occur was quite dangerous for him. However, other climbers and guides just focused on the summit, so that they didn't notice the Malaysian climber's state.
According to Nepali officials, 12 people have died, and five are missing on Qomolangma as the spring climbing season comes to an end. Gelje, the Sherpa, said there were a few likely reasons why this season has been so deadly. The weather has been poor and extremely cold, and some climbers lack experience or sufficient training for such a high altitude.
Gelje was guiding a Chinese climber to the summit when he made the decision that they would abandon their journey to save the Malaysian climber.
It was nearly an impossible task: Gelje had to secure the climber to his back and carry him down 600 meters for about six hours before another guide joined the rescue. They then took turns carrying the climber, wrapped in a sleeping mat, sometimes having to drag him through the snow, before reaching a helicopter that carried them down to base camp.
The rescue, which took place on May 18, 2023, was massively challenging. Gelje has previously carried out more than 55 rescues during his work as a guide, some very long operations, but he said the rescue was the hardest in his life.
(1)、When did Gelje meet the climber in danger?A、After reaching the summit. B、During the rest in the "death zone". C、On the way to the top of the mount. D、During the journey back to base camp.(2)、Why did others ignore the climber in need of help?A、They didn't know the climber. B、They were at a dangerous altitude. C、They lacked experience of helping people. D、They only cared about their arrival at the summit.(3)、What can we infer about Gelje from the text?A、He's an experienced coach. B、He's careful and skilled at climbing. C、He s a rescue worker on Qomolangma. D、He's irresponsible for the climber he led.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、A Hard Rescue for a Climber B、A Difficult Task from a Guide C、A "Death Zone" Blocking Climbers D、A Sad Decision to Give Up Climbing -

After he went into the hospital, he found that he left his cell phone in the taxi, but the taxi had left. The worse thing was that he had forgotten to ask the nurse which ward his father was in. He had to scurry around in the hospital, looking for his father. Seeing a nurse, he asked her anxiously, "My father is in hospital. He.."
The nurse interrupted him, "Oh, my God. It's you. Come with me!" She led the anxious young man to the bed side of an elderly man. "Your son is here," she whispered to the elderly patient. Love for a dog. Easy, right? It wasn't in the case of Wilson.
When we first had Wilson, he hardly wagged (he) tail. He made very little eye contact and didn't like to be petted. In addition, Wilson would be in the other room instead of (be) in the same room with us.
Wilson turned our nature loving backyard into hunting ground. We once enjoyed sitting outside watching the rabbits jump around. Instead, we watched in horror as Wilson(go) into hunting mode. Three rabbits were (quick) killed. This was the third time that he (do) such a thing.
It could have been very easy to ignore him, or worse, give him away again. But we didn't do either. We chose (love) him.
I showered him with non-stop attention. We went for walks and played catch. Every night I petted him and scratched his ears, made him very comfortable. It took over a month of this intense attention. Eventually, He no longer went into another room by himself. He would usually be by me or Robert,(rest) his head or some part of his body on our foot. We all need love and attention.
Wilson's poor behavior, we loved him anyway. Wilson has taught me what love really means.

Sometimes the people least likely to engage with Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or Zoom are the people who can benefit from it the most.
The "silent generation", or those born between 1928 and 1945, aren't usually mentioned alongside the likes of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. A study this year said that 45 percent of people over 65 use social media sites. Yet, for the majority of seniors, it is more about gathering information than sharing things about themselves.
For example, AARP has pointed out that Facebook's largest function for older folks has been helping them keep in touch with their families, especially their grandchildren. But this doesn't really reflect the digital connectivity(连接) many elders are experiencing.
BJ, a friend who just turned 80, does not own a computer, yet he's one of the 4 out of 10 seniors with a smartphone, which never leaves his side. For him social media is purely social— no grandkids, just people from every stage of his eight decades. It has kept him youthful and connected. He has figured out how to make Facebook and Instagram work for him by asking his younger friends for help when he gets stuck.
Jesse Epstein, who has been teaching in a college for 44 years. He moved to Costa Rica with his wife and young child four years ago when he was 70. "I wouldn't be able to live the life I now lead without the assistance of Zoom, Google Classroom, WhatsApp, and Microsoft Teams," Epstein tells me on the phone, speaking from his home in Tamarindo. "My current students are all masters-level schoolteachers. I use Zoom to observe and evaluate how well they incorporate(融入) these technologies into their lessons live in the classroom. I was surprised by how much more attentive students seemed to be online than they typically were in the classroom receiving the same material."
He keeps in touch in a very real way with friends he's known for decades. "Networking technologies have supported all my life choices and helped me and my family achieve a level of freedom and independence which I didn't think was possible for someone in their mid-seventies," he adds.
(1)、Why are the elderly called the "silent generation"?A、They hardly share personal experiences online. B、They are too shy to deliver a speech in public. C、They never keep in touch with others online. D、They are unfortunately speech-impaired.(2)、Why does the author take BJ as an example?A、To express good attitudes towards life. B、To explore possible ways to stay young. C、To reflect the popularity of Facebook. D、To show the real social connection.(3)、Which is not the benefit of networking technologies according to Jesse Epstein?A、Students are more likely to concentrate on the class. B、All his life choices are backed by online technologies. C、He can improve his teaching skills and methods. D、His family members have freedom and independence.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Social Media Gives the Silent Generation a Voice B、Social Apps Are Welcomed by People of All Ages C、Networking Technologies Are a Double-edged Sword D、The Silent Generation Are Eager for Connectivity -

In simpler times, we never had to consider a loved one's privacy when gift-buying. But as technology has continued its high-speed advance and growth at all costs, many companies and the products they create have long been skirting(回避) adequate data and privacy protection, leaving users at risk. For example, the audiobook reader you give to your children to send them to sleep at night now captures (捕捉) data on what they like.
As we continue to integrate (整合) the Internet into more of our devices and cover our homes and lives with cameras, microphones and trackers, the lack of data protection and privacy is becoming dangerous. Very few companies are being honest about how they collect, store and use data, and the only loser is the very individuals who use these products.
But that, right there, is the one chance consumers have to turn the tide.
The change starts with us. Buying a small device isn't simply buying a product anymore; it's a conscious decision about whether you trust the company behind it to work in your best interests and keep you safe. It's your responsibility as a consumer to be aware of this choice and act on it. In an ideal future, it won't require hours of research一whether done by the buyer or by organizations一to buy safe, responsible products. But for now, it's the best option available as these companies continue to get a free pass.
We can demand more. We must demand more. We can demand that privacy and security be taken seriously by the companies who build the products we buy. Yes, technology has vastly improved our lives, but that shouldn't come at the cost of our safety. So if you want o give someone a gift, give them the gift of privacy. It's the only way to make the Internet -and our lives-a little safer in this digital world.

In school we learned about Earth. We learned that rivers flow from higher ground to lower ground. They usually end at a bigger river or go into a lake or ocean.
I can see that every day in Chicago. Our river goes into the lake. It's a giant lake. We used to go fishing on the river every summer. Most days you would find me and my grandfather there, fishing. My father was busy working for the city. I did not know what his job was. He said it was in the Sanitary(卫生的) and Ship Canal.
My grandfather would take me to the river."In the old days,"he said, "this was a clean stream. Now look at it. It is filthy". Sometimes we even saw dead fish floating on it.
When we brought the fish home, my mother would throw them out. "We can't eat this. This is dirty, bad fish." She sounded angry. So my grandfather and I stopped bringing the fish home. Sometimes we would go to fish and throw them back. But mostly we just stayed at home. We were sad about it.
Then one day my father was so busy he was not home. That New Year's Day he worked, too. My mother was worried. It is too cold." But he went anyway.
Then two days later the newspaper said, "It is a miracle!" That was the headline. I read the article. It told how the workers on the Sanitary and Ship Canal had done something impossible. They had reversed the Chicago River. They dug such a great hole that the river rushed away from the lake. It now went to the west. I was excited. So was my grandfather. We both laughed. So did my mother. My father smiled a lot, all day long.
