I used to be very shy and often felt lonely. Although I did well in all the academic subjects, I was afraid of physical education. My classmates often laughed at me. 

"Look at that girl," they said. "Her feet don't leave the ground when she runs!"

Their words embarrassed me. Moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. As a result, I often ended up looking at others enjoy their games. 

Things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. By mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women's 1500 meters race. By the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.

I was utterly dumbfounded (目瞪口呆的). 1500 meters! Running against the best runners from other classes! And in front of students of the entire school! It would be the worst nightmare I'd ever have!

"You still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet," my classmates all said this to me, including my teacher.

My desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, "Cool! You will run for our class! And we will do training together. " Yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, I said to myself. But still, 1500 meters to me was like Mount Everest to a beginning climber. I had no idea even how to start my preparation.

Fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. Every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. They gave me strengths. While we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us. 

One month certainly couldn't make me a good runner. But when I was standing behind the start line, I no longer felt lonely or afraid. I saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.

The day finally came!

Cultural exchanges and mutual (相互的) learning are key to improving understanding among people from different nations, (especial) at a time when the world is undergoing great changes, said speakers from home and abroad during the 2023 Beijing Culture Forum (论坛) on Friday. 

Qu Yingpu, editor-in-chief of China Daily, stressed the need (build) platforms jointly for exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations, carry forward the Silk Road spirit and promote (share) values for all mankind so as to allow the world to better understand Chinese culture and advance  progress of human civilization. 

Stelios Virvidakis, president of the Steering Committee of the Center of Greek and Chinese Ancient Civilizations, said in a video speech that he hoped mutual learning and cooperation between Greece and China could (strengthen) further and the study of each other's languages, culture and history better promoted. He added Greek universities would have more Chinese language courses and Sinology classes the near future.

Nobel (win) Mo Yan highlighted writers' roles in promoting Chinese culture to the world. For him, quality literary works transcend (超越) time and space, and the ultimate goal of (author) and playwrights is to show human nature and shape vivid human images through stories and other artistic measures. "When a writer has composed a good work, its introduction to foreign readers will be a natural process," he said.

More than 50 project agreements (concern) publishing, film-making, scientific technology, cultural heritage and other cultural undertakings were signed during the two-day forum  began on Thursday. 

Many animals use some kinds of "language". They use signals and the signals have meanings. More than 350 million people suffer from depression around the world. Music can benefit depressive patients, depending on the type of music.  But techno and heavy metal brings people down even more. When you feel low, put on some classical or relaxing music to increase positive moods. 

Softening the lighting and music can lead people to eat fewer calories and enjoy their meals better. If you're looking for ways to reduce your appetite (食欲), try dimming the lights and listening to soft music next time you sit down for a meal.

Music raises IQ and school performance.

Taking music lessons predicts higher school performance and IQ in young children. In one study, children who took singing lessons had learned better than children who took other lessons unrelated to music. If you want to help your children achieve excellence in their studies, you can let them take music lessons.

In many people's eyes, artist Mark Rothko's enormous paintings are nothing more than masses of color. Yet, a painting can be worth nearly $100 million. Besides, Pablo Picasso's twisted faces attract some viewers but terrify others.

Why does the phenomenon happen? The answer may lie in our brain networks. Researchers have now developed an algorithm(算法) that can predict art preference by analyzing how a person's brain breaks down visual information and decides whether a painting is "good". The findings show for the first time how basic features of a painting combine with human judgment to give art value in our minds.

Most people, including researchers, consider art preference to be various, says Anjan Chatterjee, a neurologist(神经学家) at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study. In some cases, personal preference is rooted in biology. For instance, sugary foods help us survive. and people tend to share similar standards of beauty when it comes to human faces and landscapes. However, when it comes to art, we seem to care about and value relatively arbitrary(任意的) things, according to Chatterjee. 

To figure out how the brain forms value judgments about art, neuroscientist Kiyohito ligaya and his colleagues first asked more than 1,300 volunteers on the website Amazon Mechanical Turk to rate a selection of 825 paintings from four Western types including impressionism, cubism, abstract art and color field painting. Volunteers were all over the age of 18, but researchers didn't give exact information about their familiarity with art or their ethnic (种族的) or national origin. 

The researchers revealed that paintings preferred by the same groups of people tended to share certain visual characteristics. These characteristics all fell into two categories: "Low-level" characteristics, like contrast and color, were intrinsic (固有的) to an image; "High-level" characteristics, like the emotion a painting brought about, required human understanding. Once the method was trained, it could analyze these characteristics in new paintings and accurately predict which works a person would like.

You start by running around the school track three times to warm up. This is followed by exercises or long jump for the girls and football or basketball for the boys. That is an average 45 -minute PE class— but do you really enjoy it?

For students at the Second High School Attached to Beijing Normal University, sports classes have experienced a welcome change. Senior 2 students now learn the traditional Chinese martial art of sword-fighting (中国剑术), making PE the most popular lesson on the timetable. "The classes used to be boring as we just did the same things again and again," said Xiao Tong. "But now PE classes are such fun. Sword-fighting is so cool. " His classmate Wei Jie agrees. "As well as being fun, we learn about traditional Chinese culture," she said. The usual morning exercises performed to music on the school playground have been replaced by kicking and punching practice (搏击操) to a pop music by Zheng Xiuwen. "We didn't pay much attention when we heard the old music," Xiao explained, "But when Zheng's music is played, we get excited. " Mao Min, the PE teacher who introduced the changes, is pleased that the students now enjoy sports lessons more. "The classes encourage healthy lifestyles and I am always looking for creative ways to keep the students active," he said. Schools offer activities according to what sports facilities (设备) they have. For example, students at the Experimental High School Attached to Beijing Normal University can choose to learn swimming, taekwondo (跆拳道) or volleyball. "I take my volleyball very seriously so I keep fit by playing it," said Senior 2 student Zhang Zheng. "Students only try hard in sports that interest them. "

The only thing separating my two worlds is the Rio Grande river— it might not be much, but it's enough for me to feel a big difference in customs and values. People who are not from El Paso, Texas, United States or a border city might not understand what it's like to grow up between two places at once.

I grew up in a Mexican household. My dad was born in El Paso but lived nearly his entire life in Ciudad Juárez until I was born, and my mom was born and raised in Mexico. She didn't move to the US until she had me, when she was 28. My first language was Spanish, but my parents did not want me in bilingual classes. So, instead, it was all English for me at school.

English was all I spoke among friends at school, while Spanish was the designated language with family, and I hardly ever mixed them. I also spent a lot of time with my maternal grandparents, who lived in Juárez and you could say helped raise and shape who I am today. It's thanks to them that I perfected my Spanish, learned to read and write in that language — despite never taking classes—and fell in love with my Mexican culture by traveling to Mexico City and around the country. 

Along with being bilingual came a sense of having a double identity. I enjoyed watching Spanish TV series with my grandma as much as American series such as The Amanda Show. And the same went for music. I loved listening to Spanish singers, as much as American pop singers. 

It wasn't until high school that I began to meet other people whose backgrounds I could relate to. I was introduced to friends with whom I identified because they were Mexican American and who had also been raised in El Paso but often visited family in Juárez. It was also during these years that I started going out to party in Juárez.

Growing up on the border is pretty special. Thanks to my bicultural upbringing, I learned to enjoy and appreciate both sides of me without ever questioning who I am, because the truth is that I need both of those relationships and cultural identities to feel complete.
